  • Caution! Be aware that there are 2 different Delta replacement shower cartridges that look the same. One cartridge will only work if is your home was built BEFORE 2005. The other replacement cartridge is for homes built AFTER 2005. So make sure you have that information available when making your purchase. At the end of the video I show you the back of the one I purchased in this video to complete the job 🙂

    Hi Sam,
Thank you for this video, I am only adding to help as you did a fine job. The first thing is to spray the big brass nut with Liquid Wrench many times. Then very lightly tap the nut around, Very lightly. Then the way to get that thin large brass cartridge nut off is a pair of Channellock Round Jaw #442 pliers in most DIY and hardware stores, it's cheaper than aspirin and these pliers won't bind the soft brass nut, instead breaking it loose by setting them to the second to largest opening and applying as little pressure as possible. A regular pipe wrench on soft brass tends to bind it rather than assist. Just sharing my long experience. I have ruined a many!
You have it right Sam, but from the older cartridges, 1993 to 2001, this is my experience.
    First of all if you have and older 1300/1400 series cartridge with the lower balancing portion being Opaque and top end being white, this is the old rp19804 which must be replaced with the new blue bottom 19804 that Sam is showing. Folks, don't be deceived by Delta's identity website because there are two different replacement cartridges "1300-1400, and T13/14 series" that use the term "this is the current Multichoice Universal" which has their patent on it. The T 13/14 "Multichoice Universal" insinuates that it is one of the replacements, but it doesn't fit. I have one of these in my truck for a while which I tried "RP46074" to replace the old Opaque cartridge with and it didn't work. The spacing between the bottom two round hot and cold inlets of the balancing valve have about a 1/8" difference in their spread. This is very confusing. Check out Delta's indentifying website at;
    www.deltafaucet.com/shower-cartridges
for pictures of the cartridges. But use your discretion by what I mentioned above. An rp46074 "Multichoice Universal", and and RP74236" Multichoice Universal" will not replace and "old" rp19804 Opaque bottom cartridge. The "Multichoice Universal" as well as the "P type" stamped on the top gray part side is deceiving. Use a new rp19804 blue bottom like Sams video.
Sorry this is long, but I just got screwed by the unexplained information on Delta's website between pre 2002 1300/1400 series and the T13/14 series Multichoice above.
I have been plumbing for 47 years and specialize in service and repair, but am on a smaller island in Hawaii and don't work on these very often. I usually am able to replace the washers and springs. If replacing washers and springs doesn't fix it, it is a split in the center glue joint on the bottom balancing valve.
Delta is my all time favorite brand for quality and ease of repair, no other beats them for their category. But I am very disappointed that they don't even have the cartridge number on the cartridge despite all of the very small stamped writing on it.
I will be sending a copy of this as well as calling them to help clarify their website.
Thanks again Sam, and Aloha, Paul, Mauna Kea Plumbing Co., Hilo, Hawaii

  • @FliesGoodbyes

Most new have shut off screws right inside there (1 on hot and 1 on cold).
I learned today, those don't always work though. Turned both off and started to remove the cartridge and water started gushing out. Had to run out to the street to shut main off.
    Always learning new things!
I was just removing to take pics to get new cartridge.
This shower had all of a sudden become only a trickle of water. Thats why I was there.
When I removed it, only half of it came out. Had to really carefully pry the blue part out.
Once I cleaned everything and put it all back together it worked like new. Go figure🤷‍♂️

Great short vid bro....If you have trouble removing the brass cartridge ring....take a decent size hammer and place the face (or the side) of the hammer on one side of the ring....then tap on the opposite side with another hammer....moving the hammers all the way around the ring....TAKE YOUR TIME....I probably make close to 100 taps...IT'S WORTH IT. It will separate the threads so that if you grip it (semi-gently) with some newer (sharp teeth) channel locks it will turn. Use some plumbers grease on everything to re-install the new one.....the next guy will thank you.
Best to take the cartridge with you to store....but if you can't.... buy both size cartridges....blue one and white one....compare CLOSELY WHICH ONE MATCHES THE ONE REMOVED....SLIGHT DIFFERENCE IN LENGHT...take back the one that doesn't quite fit. (expensive)

To all who couldnt get the inner part of the cartridge out of the outer housing - the answer is simple. Make sure the two parts of the cartridge stay locked together when pulling it out and they will come out together. Do not twist or turn the outer part as doing that unlocks the two parts and leaves the inner one behind. Pull straight to remove.
