  • In this video we do a quick run through of the Delta Monitor shower valve cartridge replacement. We discuss the steps of replacing while sharing tips, tricks and share the links below for the seats and springs as well as the cartridge replacements. The aftermarket cartridge is less than half price so I tried it simply to test and see how it works. I have used mine over a dozen times now and it works very well. I also share a link for the OEM Delta cartridge if you rather use the name brand replacement. Hope you find the information helpful and thanks for watching!

A plumber wanted to charge me 500.00 and replace the whole valve because he said the cartridge was too old and would break off in there and it would be too hard to just replace the cartridge. I told him I’d get a second opinion…it took me 15 minutes and 80.00 bucks at the Home depot to fix it after watching this video! And no more leaks!!! Thanks and may God bless you!❤️

I have replaced 10 of these in my home over 20 plus years and on number 11 it would not slide in like the previous times. I had cleaned, lubed and still a no go. Using the brass bonnet to inch it in was the key. Thank you for this video and saving the headache.

Just want to say EXCELLENT video. From the 2 different types of replacement and pictures. I brought the cartridge to Home Depot and they couldn’t even really help. My cartridge broke from the handle and it came apart in 2 pieces but with vice grip I got it out but just came off in pieces. Amazing video overall. $100 in just parts and about 2-3 hours with going to the store and just taking my time as it was my first time.
I just rather go with delta parts as if they lasted this long I hope it would last as long as before. Also believe it broke off with also kids playing with it too.

There are many videos about how to replace the cartridge, but this is the only one that answered all of my questions as a 78-year old widow with no plumbing experience. The most important thing was putting in the cartridge and not trying to force the little triangular tabs into place, but rather hand tightening the bonnet to do the job. Shower no longer drips! Great video, pretty easy fix. The first step you need to do is call Delta and talk to customer service. Delta has a lifetime warranty on all faucets. They will send you the replacement cartridge for free, a$60-$75 value. Just talked with them today while dealing with a leaky shower that was installed 24 years ago. Was on the phone for 5 minutes and they are shipping me a new cartridge today!

This is for anyone that runs into the kind of problems I did. Cartridge WOULD NOT come out. Finally the flange around the the ports that hold the seals & springs broke away and the stem assembly came out. Clamped onto the ports with needle nose vise grips. After much effort the port assembly came out far enough I could grab it with channel locks from the side. Never did see what was holding it. Luckily there was no significant damage to the valve body and none to the connecting plumbing, so a new cartridge solved the problem. Hopefully, I'm the only one that experiences this. Thanks to Thrifty Tool Shed for showing me what I was dealing with.

Well the best way is to isolate the hot water from the water heater. If not possible then by cutting off the main water as I showed in the video. After isolating the whole house and then of course draining as mentioned. I did in the tub under my shower and left that valve open to double check to line pressure. The one thing to always make sure is that the water heater does not drain and try to heat up. It can destroy a water heater to leave it operating and not have water inside. I made sure not to drain the tank, but stop the water going into it so no water can push out. Hope it helps!

You know , I really like just a simple hot water line cutoff.
If I had a house built , I would have hot & cold cutoff on the shower. So much easier for sure.

Will all of the newer trim kits for the Monitor 14 series fit these older style 14 cartridges (19804)? I've got a home built in '99 and I'd like to change the trim pieces out but keep everything the same behind the wall. The way the handle attaches seems similar, just wondering if the slightly longer vs shorter cartridge will give me issues.

  • @stevenelliott216

At 1:06 you ask "Am I the only one that thinks these cartridges resemble a droid?" I can see that, but I think it looks like an inverse Smurf - blue pants, white shirt. I may not remember "Delta RP19804" next time it needs to be replaced, but I can remember "inverse Smurf" forever.
This video was valuable to me in that I see that I may be missing some parts, like the threaded retaining nut that holds in in place. Did the previous owner drop it into the wall? Additional investigation is called for. As it is I'm worried the cartridge may shoot out like a bullet with the water pressure.
And that screw cover with the arrow, I don't have that. The previous home owner must have lost that as well.

      @cd7071 Před rokem

@@klutzgolfn7009 he actually already answered your question. Older models use different valves than the newer ones. The Delta Monitor changed valves around 2006, so if you buy a valve that works with an older model made before that, it will not work with a newer one. However if your existing Monitor was made 2007 or later and you replace it with a brand new Monitor, then yes, it will use the same cartridge.

"It's easy" they say. "Watch a CZcams video" they say. Brass nut won't come off. Had a pipe wrench on it , and trying to hold the rest with Channel lock pliers. A lot of force, it but won't move. I'm calling a plumber before I break something.

Well, very smart of you to know when to stop and get help. I have personally never seen one that is that difficult to come off, but I made sure to warn not to use extreme force or damage threads. Since apparently some this tight and stuck does happen, thanks for sharing your experience even though it did not go as planned for you. Best of luck to ya!

After the handle was unscrewed and taken off, mine has a small disc that pops off. The one in this video does not. Does anyone know what that small disc might be for?

If it's a grey plastic disc some of them do have that disc to adjust the temperature as this one has, but it was a slightly different adjust knob.

@@ThriftyToolShed I apprecaite you getting back to me. Thanks for that. The model you linked is the exact one I ordered. There is also a notched, rotatable temperature adjuster (?) that is behind the screw that uses an allen wrench. The front disc also has to do with temperature ?

I'm trying to get my water to run hotter but I can't tell what he's doing because his hand is in the way. What do I do to what?
Excellent video otherwise but camera work wasn't great at all during the part about adjusting the water temperature.

That is because there are different types of adjustment knobs depending on which one you buy. Mine was the type you "put your hand up in front of it" and grab the small white disc, pull outward on it and rotate it CW or CCW to adjust. It is spring loaded. Some models and manufacturers do vary the adjustment knob design, but it's usually intuitive. It's typically a knob to pull out and turn to adjust.
