I had a difficult time getting that cartridge in the valve. I thought maybe I got a defective one. For hours I pulled my hair out trying to find anything that would help me. Your video was the only one that addressed that issue. You are the master and commander of this valve sir. I tip my hat to you. You are welcome at my house anytime, you don't even have to knock. Keep up the excellent work my friend. And thank you so much.
Our Delta never dripped...went from working fine to full blown running dribble. Ran around to 3 different box stores trying to get a clue. Finally with the help of Google and this video I got it figured out. I got the new cartridge in pretty much along the same lines as the video....ran out to the meter to turn the water back on to check for leaks. My wife meets me halfway back to the house yelling, "WATER IS GOING EVERYWHERE"!! Sure enough water was coming out all around the cartridge....ran back to the meter and then back to the bathroom. First thing I see is the locking ring sitting there on the toilet seat lid....Awwwww Godfrey Daniels!! Locking ring back on....water back on...all is good. Thanks for an informative video.
Actually all was not good…the new cartridge from HD had a slow drip..drip..about one per second. This time I did the e-mail exchange with Delta, including 8X10 color glossies of all the evidence of the drip😉. Around two weeks later I got the “free” replacement valve and it worked perfectly. So, the moral of the story is; don’t declare victory until you’ve actually won the war. 😄
Thanks for the video. I just replaced the same Delta shower faucet cartridge as you. Quite a bit different design then the MOEN Shower cartridges that I had grown used to. Calcium/corrosion build up made it a challenge; the set screw used to hold the handle to the cartridge was seized, so ended up breaking the old cartridge and handle to get it off. Lots of force rocking the handle back and forth and pulling simultaneously to get it off. Then had to tackle the metal collar that holds the cartridge in. Persistence paid off (along with some CLR and penetrant oil/spray and muscle) and got it free. I used Channel Lock pliers on it...being careful not to apply all the pressure on just one spot as I read you can ruin the collar that way and forced to get a new one. During the replacement, I made sure to use plumbers grease on the set screw, retaining collar (and threads on valve) as well as the O-rings on the cartridge. I hope this will make it much easier if I have to do this again down the road. The Delta design isn't the best IMO.
Dude, you da man!!! This video showed me how to buy the right part, disassemble (which was even harder for me to pull out than it was for him in the video!), put everything back in, and adjust the handle for the right amount of hot water. Thank you SO MUCH for going through the effort to put this on CZcams for all of us😀
Boom! I’m here cause my cartridge leaked. I bought a universal seal but the vid I watched had the seals inside the brass housing. After watching this and seeing I have a type P cartridge I took it apart and was able to see the seal was torn. The universal seal fit perfect! 👍 good as new. Didn’t know you could even take it apart. Thank you!
Thanks for the making the video. I was wanting to review live before doing the replacement myself. The video was very helpful, gave me more confidence to complete the replacement. Will use the valve grease for the O-Rings to slide into place, not installed dry to take a chance to cut the O-ring. Had the leaking problem started after the freeze February 2021, probably due to the city water lines were stopped too, when restarting, probably had a lot of contaminants in the piping loosened. Normally would turn on hot water, then shut off, hoping sealing the O-rings via heat expansion. I could not fit a 1/8" allen wrench fit, used a #10 torx screwdriver. After replacing, will take advice to order from Delta Manufacturer. Thank You again.
Very good video for the skilled homeowner. At 17:40 when you side the sleeve onto the new valve, STOP. Turn your water back on. Using pliers, open the valve to test your water temperature. If it is too cold or too hot, adjust the white plastic ring accordingly. Once its good, finish the handle attachment and set screw.
Thanks for this video. I called delta and they gave me the new seals and springs for free. I took it apart and thought that cartridge was one complete unit. Didn't realize it opened to get to the seals. Changed seals works great.
Just fixed mine yesterday...after buying several incorrect cartridges...be sure the two legs that go into the housing are long enough...the incorrect ones were just too short ...if you can't turn the water off, they are too short and you have the incorrect cartridge...I used the danco model 10664 to fix ours.
The video and instructions are great. I followed them and was able to replace the cartridge. There is one point that might be in error: The Delta RP46074 package says it works for 13 & 14 series valves, and the dialog in the video suggests that 13 & 14 series are not the same as 1300 and 1400 series. I used the RP46074 for a 1400 series valve and it worked perfectly. The valves were identical for the end that is inserted into the plumbing. The only difference was a new or different hot water limiter.
Thank you for the great video and you’re a hulk doing any of this one handed! I had the same cartridge as you did. During removal of the cartridge it split in half leaving the back side lodged inside the brass faucet housing. I used a product called Penetrol90 and let it sit. Had to do the same on the set screw. The plumber’s grease was essential getting the new cartridge in place. It took me roughly two hours of jiggle, waggle, push, pull, swear, pray and then to the hardware store to buy the grease you used. Oh, and there was hard water buildup around the receptacles back inside the brass faucet housing. I delicately cleaned it off with LimeAway and a small flat headed screw driver. I think the buildup was causing extra work removing the old cartridge and getting the new cartridge to slide in the hot and cold water inlets inside the housing. I got the cartridge from Delta customer care. All I had to do was send a few pictures and they knew exactly what model number I needed. So, I’m still in a dilemma, the shower head is still dripping so after all this work, it seems I didn’t exactly resolve the problem. So, now what do I need to do? If you have recommendations, please email at Brad.rickards@gmail.com Thanks again for getting me through this first time plumbing repair!
You could try turning the handle on and off many times. It sounds like there is some debris causing the cartridge to leak. If that doesn't work, I would pull it apart and take a close look at the mating surfaces.
I add a bit of antiseize to the cartridge retaining ring and handle set screw since we've got hard water. Makes disassembly years from now a lot easier.
The rubber seats as you pointed out is what goes bad on these. It’s a $3 part at Lowe’s and Home Depot. You also want to turn the cartridge as you wiggle it and it will pop right out. Thanks for your video, I was able to fix a shower that was leaking for years.
At 10:37, the part he's touching is the spring and seat. Believing I had a different model faucet, I bought the RP4993 kit for my fix. Replaced them in the valve, put the valve back together and reinstalled it for an easy fix. No more drips. Thanks for the video, it helped me figure out the easy fix.
Thanks for this video! I had a little trouble getting the old cartridge out, but after I got it out it was smooth sailing. Only cost incurred was for the new cartridge. Thanks again.
You are correct about the seats and springs getting hard. It happens with all faucets. Much cheaper to replace the seats and springs than replace the entire cartridge.
Good video. The hot and cold don't have equal pressures - the machined cylinder oscillates back and forth to keep the water temperature constant during any pressure variation (e.g. toilet flush ). Also, when first turned back on, any debris will get up to the shower head - so you may need to open the head and clean it out for maximum flow.
You can repair the valve body you already have in 5 minutes with part # RP - 86968 for about $ 5.oo . The reason that they don't change the orientation of. "H&C" tabs IS that in rare instances the "Ho t & Cold" plumbing gets reverse and does N0T meet the Hot on the Left & Cold on the Right standard. IF ... you experience this all you need to do to correct is rotate the valve body 180° .
I am glad you had trouble putting in the new cartridge because mine would not seat either. I had to jiggle it up and down a lot and push really hard. I thought I had the wrong valve because I was changing from dual function to single function. However, it worked with force...the force?
My Delta 1400 cartridge was 20 years old when leak started. Cause: calcium build up in supply that required Dremel with stone to polish. New "O" rings on cartridge would not have sealed due to calcium build up.
You are enormously lucky. I fixed my daughter's shower with the exact same cartridge. There is so much sediment in their water that the white portion of the cartridge was cemented in placed. The gray part broke away from the white part. I had to remove the white portion by taking it apart piece by piece using a drill to weaken it and then use needle nose vice grips to break off one piece at a time. Took me almost an hour to get it out and not damage the bore of the faucet. After all the work of getting out the old cartridge and installing the new, there is no hot water coming out of the shower and I made certain the "hot" side was placed properly. No idea what I did wrong. Very poor design in my opinion. Thanks for the video.
I had the very same problem, everything was stuck inside my pipe hard... took me about 4 hours to finally take everything out, and after I noticed I didn’t get any hot water I took everything back out and replace the little Orings back where the pipe meets the end of the delta cartridge the hot water came out good... maybe try that method? Hope everything worked out great!

This is such a poor design. Its way too easy to break stuff trying a corroded retainer ring off, or pulling the cartridge out. They needed to put flat spots on both the retaining ring and the valve body to provide counter--torque as not to damage the unit. Or provide a tool use a ratchet to get it off like you can get for oil filters.
I've got two showers with this Delta cartridge and when my upstairs shower leaked I had a spring and little rubber spring seat that needed replaced. They state that if your water lines are reversed (cold is normally on right side) then you can still install it in reversed position and have it work correctly. Thats why they didn't do it one insert direction only.
I installed the correct cartridge but no matter what I do, even greasing, I cannot get that seated back in flush past that o ring . I gave up and put the collar and other part on anyway. It is not leaking but will it hurt to not have the cartridge not seated flush?

I replaced my old cartridge because I was getting no flow but the new cartridge didn't correct the problem ... I turned the water on without the cartridge and water flowed .. what should I do now
Im not getting any water out the spout....but when I take the cartridge out I get water out the area where the cartridge was just nothing out the spout when it's in ... the old cartridge or the new one
@@stuntcardriver that cap that you move to adjust how much hot water comes out, pops out when I turn my water off. Causing it to turn back on. Any ideas on how to keep that from popping out?

How did you get the dang cartridge in?! 😂
If you have the 13/14 model, the springs & seats part # RP4993 is what worked for me. Delta wouldnt send the whole cartidge.
Don't you need to put caulk around the handle plate?
The white and gray cartridge is for the faucets made after. Around 2010 and the blue and white cartridge is the early faucets want interchange

I replaced my old cartridge because I was getting no flow but the new cartridge didn't correct the problem ... I turned the water on without the cartridge and water flowed .. what should I do now
Is the shower head blocked? I would put the cartridge back in and take the shower head off and check for flow.
Im not getting any water out the spout....but when I take the cartridge out I get water out the area where the cartridge was just nothing out the spout when it's in ... the old cartridge or the new one
Dude, you against using channel locks or you got superman hands?

Does this model fit the shower control with the glade knob that only turns to the left?
It may. I believe this model had a choice of handle. I would call delta, they are helpful.
@@stuntcardriver I called delta and they are sending me a free replacement since mine was an old model from 1990s
Do I have to adjust the temperature of water in cartridge or is it ok for not doing anything, the factory was adjusted already? Thank you.
It should be factory adjusted, but it depends on how hot your water heater is set. Most water heaters are factory set at 120-125 degrees.
@@stuntcardriver that cap that you move to adjust how much hot water comes out, pops out when I turn my water off. Causing it to turn back on. Any ideas on how to keep that from popping out?
@@818southside I would call Delta. Their customer service is very good.

Yes, you have to shut the water off.
