  • Taking my ICE Full Fat Trike (I call my 'Orange Monster Trike') off road for the first time. It was a lot of fun.
    My movements may seem a little strange. That's because I have Cerebral Palsy - a neuro-muscular condition that affects movement. But it certainly hasn't affected my sense of adventure. That's why this trike is so great - it lets me get out into these places I wouldn't otherwise get into.

    Thanks for sharing! My son has CP as well and I'm having a hard time finding an all terrain trike for him. He's only 6 but loves to ride his road trike. Wish a company would produce off road trikes for youth. Enjoy your trike and keep riding!!

    I’d ask if they make a power assist electric motor.... but I’m not sure if the battery or the engine would be able to stand the harsh bumpy off road Terrain that trikes fat tires are aloud to cover, much less if they decide to make a velomobile shell for it as well, as they would need to make it high above the ground for that to be possible, like the Velayo Velomobile?

    • @cyclingjase
      @cyclingjase  Před 5 lety

      Hi Thomas. Since this video I’ve had a Bafang BBS002 fitted to the trike. I’ve done just over 1,000km with the motor, and I’m very impressed with the setup. Rough tracks aren’t a problem, and after some teething problems its been 100% reliable. The fat tyres and suspension provide ample protection on most tracks.

    On 02.12 minutes. There is a trick to get you moving again: push with your hands on the front wheel forward. Of course you still need to pedal.

  • @TheRosa63
    @TheRosa63 Před 6 lety

    does this trike have pedal assist or is he doing it all on own? where does get a trike like this?

    • @cyclingjase
      @cyclingjase  Před 6 lety

      At the time of the video, the trike did not have peddle assist. However, I am having an electric motor fitted to it which has turned into quite a task. The trike is a FullFat which is available from www.icetrikes.co in the UK.

  • @TheRosa63
    @TheRosa63 Před 7 lety

    wow I would never call you disabled, so cool you can get out and do this and have fun and a sense of independence. Iwonder if it is possible to get one of these with pedal assist to getup those steep grades and allow youto go farther forlonger. you have some good friends there too.

    • @cyclingjase
      @cyclingjase  Před 7 lety

      I'm just on the verge of ordering a Bafaang 750w system with a 48v20ah battery to go on the Monster.

    • @TheRosa63
      @TheRosa63 Před 7 lety

      cool, why did you pick that particular motor? just curious, I have very little knowledge of these things.

    • @cyclingjase
      @cyclingjase  Před 7 lety +2

      Hi. Sorry for the delay in reply! Distractions.
      First choice was to go for a mid-drive or a hub motor. The mid-drive would fair better as it's attached to the frame, so it gets the benefit of suspension. Initially I wanted the BBS-HD (1000w), but the concern has been to gear the trike down. The smallest chainring Bafang is a 42t. My biggest chainring is 40t, and I can comfortably peddle past 50km/h. 42t would not be small enough for off-road use. A 3rd party chainring adapter is available for the BBS-002 which can take a 32t chainring. This is much more appropriate for off-road. I should still be able to have my 40t chainring.
      I also like the idea of having the motor work though the gears. You can get the extra torque you need by changing to a lower gear, and not ramp up power. The negative is you may wear out your drivetrain quicker! But I like the idea of the motor working in tandem with you.
      You can also map the controller the way you want. Just make sure your know what you're doing, and don't tell the retailer!
      Why 750w? Because 250w was only $100 cheaper. When spending this kind of money, why wouldn't you buy the more powerful motor? There's really no penalty for having a more powerful motor. Just keep it at a low setting, and it'll go all day. If for whatever unforeseen reason you need the full beans, its there!
      28v20ah? Because I want to go all day.
      I hope this helps you.

      Wrong choice of tire. I've since put a Snow Shoe XL tire on the rear. Traction is an inherent problem with tadpole recumbents. Very difficult to overcome.

    don't those fat tires slow you down ?

    • @cyclingjase
      @cyclingjase  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes and no. It's very slow to accelerate, and you really do need to work the gears to get any sort of performance out of it. But once it's up and rolling, it keeps rolling! You just need to keep up the cadence then.
      What's interesting is I have another recumbent with 20x1.5" tires, and at 22kg, it's 5kg lighter than the Monster, but times over a distance are pretty much identical. No, I do not have an explanation for this...

    • @mardiffv.8775
      @mardiffv.8775 Před 6 lety

      It depends on the tyre pressure: 0.3 to 0.5 bar off road, 0.6 tot 1.0 bar on the road. With high pressure, they tyre ride just like ordinairy ATB tyres. That's why I carry an air pump.
