    The Explorer II off-road handcycle , is a hand powered trike for people with disabilities, however it can bring a lot of fun also for able bodied. We created this handcycle so that break the boundary of mountain biking and allow the disabled persons to reach what until now was impossible. Now we at SPORT-ON believe that we have succeeded!

    All I have to say is this is awesome. A company that really gives access to off road cycling to disabled has all my respect. I cant beleive some of the comments below about this though, they dont get the point nor can understand that their way of thinking is what makes life for those without full function of their limbs (or missing limbs) so difficult. Hats off to you guys for taking the time to build this and make it something thats serious and well thought out.

    I'd like a model like this for able bodied people in which you can drive with both your arms and legs. I am a many year experienced road bicyclist and when u travel 100 miles or more uphills have big gains from using a hand to push down on a knee for added drive. The added power of an arm can save you much energy letting you ride further distances than your legs could. I would love a bicycle that has the aerodynamics that this bike offers with the arm and leg drive.

    As an Occupational Therapist who has spent a fair bit of time working with folks with a disability or compromised function, I reckon these things rock. Before you throw in a trolling comment as an able bodied rider, spare a thought for what your options might be if you go OTB and become paralysed or lose a leg or two. Main concern that I can see is working out how to minimise the risk of a flail chest injury (see trauma.org/archive/thoracic/CHESTflail.html) on a decent G-out. Looks well engineered though!

      This is "real" mountain biking. This offers a totally different workout for those of use that have use of all our limbs, and I'm sure bombing down a mountain face first and low to the ground would be a pretty awesome feeling. Think about what it is like to drive a Ferrari compared to a lifted pick up truck. Ferrari feels faster at the same speed because you are so close to the ground.

    • @wadopotato33
      @wadopotato33 Před 9 lety +1

      Jacob Selman Not a great analogy because a Ferrari doesn't just feel faster because it is low to the ground. It feels faster because it is much, much faster. Besides, this would be a downgrade in performance. Adding wheels adds friction and therefore resistance, not to mention weight. That added resistance would have to be overcome by an increase in the amount of work done. It serves no practical advantage and has the added disadvantage of being too wide for much of the singletrack that we have out here in the West.

  • @DownundaThunda
    @DownundaThunda Před 10 lety +3

    Well, I just have a couple questions about this handcycle design.
    First of all, when pedaling, do you lean to either side to steer?
    Also on the topic of pedaling, is hand pedaling harder or more exhaustive than the normal kind?
    I also noticed that the cycle can become unstable at higher speeds, this could become a safety concern for the riders. If they're already handicapped, then the cycle falling on you (Even if it's light) Can make things worse, if you aren't already handicapped, then having a cycle crash like that could make you handicapped.
    I don't think that tri-wheel handcycles are all that practical. They sound good on paper, and they would be fantastic for anyone handicapped, but not for speed, defenately not for racing, and I don't think that they're really a good idea to be taken off-road from what I saw in this video. I think that they'd be great for cruising, and getting a handicapped person to be on a cycle, but I think that off road, racing and off road racing should be left to the 2-wheeled traditional mountain bikes.

Riding down a hill for now other reason than for shits and giggles is by your definition impractical. Practicality has no basis in sports, no one cares about practicality, people care about having a good time, and having fun. Very inspiring potential of adventure no matter who is into it. That bike looks fun , even for a full electric/gas cruise, like a wider back wheel.

      Designed for disabled people who do not have the use of their legs.
      This has to go down as one of the best and highly beneficial inventions for people with limited mobility.
      Two thumbs up from me to the inventors!!!!

    I feel like I would have an urge to get off of it and attempt to carry it. Overlooking the fact that this would be a great facilitator for the handicapped to be more mobile, two wheels with foot pedals just makes more sense.
