  • The Philippine military is looking to create a new base at Subic Bay to boost the country’s capabilities against increasing Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. In this episode of “Taiwan Talks,” we discuss the history of Subic Bay, its significance to the Philippines’ defense, and international involvement in regional security. Furthermore, we examine links between Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines, as well as how the use of technology such as drones can affect their collective security.

      according to China's constitution amended after Chinese revolution in 1930s, Taiwan is a province of mainland China, were there is no context on Taiwan's constitution that China is apart of Taiwan, Taiwan is not recognized as country, Since People's Republic of China's establishment in 1949, the PRC has also claimed Taiwan as a province

    • @totzinfo

      Non-Communist nations referred to the CCP-controlled mainland as "Red China" during this time. In 1971, the UN General Assembly voted to move the "China" United Nations seat from the ROC to the PRC. In 1971, the UN expelled the ROC and transferred China's seat to the People's Republic of China (PRC). In addition to the ad tempus recognition of the ROC by a majority of countries before UN Resolution 2758, the ROC lost its membership in all intergovernmental organisations related to the UN. therefore Taiwan is not a country but a province of mainland China

    Short of a direct military pushback against China, maybe the think tanks and military planners in the Philippines, the U.S., and like-minded allies have already explored the following options already, who knows: My apologies if the following options are rather lengthy. Thank you for your patience and understanding:
    .
    RISK LEVEL 1: (1) File diplomatic note verbales (useless); (2) Summon Chinese ambassador to protest (useless); (3) PH Coast Guard hold press conferences (useless); (4) AFP holds press conferences (useless); (5) Senate holds press conferences and investigations (useless); (6) Congress holds press conferences and probes (useless); (7) Threaten to declare Chinese ambassador as persona non grata (useless); (8) Provide transparency media coverage of Chinese & PH actions (useless); (9) Invite foreign media onboard PH vessels sailing in the West PH Sea (useless); (10) Portray China as the aggressor in the West Philippine Sea (useless); (11) Have all ASEAN countries unite in declaring China’s actions as aggressive (useless); (12) Cancel all pending infrastructure projects in the PH with Chinese companies (useless); (13) Air drop supplies to BRP Sierra Madre (mixed results); (14) Send civilian ships to supply outposts (mixed results); (15) Use PH Coast Guard & BFAR assets to escort supply ships (mixed results); (16) Use helicopters to send supplies to BRP Sierra Madre (results pending).
    .
    RISK LEVEL 2: (1) Increase number of EDCA sites even more; (2) Increase number of BrahMos cruise missile sites; (3) Increase radar sites to monitor CCG, PLAAF & PLAN, militia movements; (4) Set cap on visitor arrivals from China; (5) PH grants visa-free status for Taiwan nationals; (6) PH grants priority & waivers to Taiwanese companies to do business in the PH; (7). Increase PH cross-cultural interaction with Taiwan (education, tourism, agriculture, etc.); (8) Employ U.S. Coast Guard assets to escort PH supply ships; (9) Invite foreign shipbuilding companies to construct shipyards in the Philippines to speed up warship construction (i.e., Hyundai, Daewoo, Navantia, Austal, Mitsubishi, etc.) (10) Invest and expand PH shipyards like PropMech (note that the PH is the 4th largest shipbuilding country in the world & Lung Teh Shibuilding Corp. of Taiwan was the principal designer/builder of the Philippine Navy's Multi-Purpose Assault Craft (MPAC) when the program first began; (11) Increase frequency of PH Coast Guard holding more civil & maritime exercises with the Taiwan Coast Guard (we already do that as per AFP Chief of Staff, General Romeo Brawner); (12) Vigorously pursue a 2nd claim at the World Arbitration Court in the Hague;
    .
    RISK LEVEL 3: (1) Increase the Philippine’s defense budget. NOTE: The Philippine defense budget is expected to be around 1.19% of the country’s GDP in 2024; it should be increased drastically (*the PH is facing an existential threat as China gobbles up more PH territory, thereby threatening PH sovereignty … now, they are doing the same with our Sabina Shoal; note that Vietnam’s defense budget is expected to be around 2.97% of the country’s GDP in 2024); (2) Acquire F-16 /JAS-39 multirole fighter bombers & munitions; (3) Acquire submarines & more guided-missile frigates, corvettes, and missile boats; (4) Increase the number of larger steel-hulled Coast Guard cutters (larger than MRRV’s); (5) Acquire more assets for long range fires (GMLRS, 155mm artillery, etc.); (6) Acquire more assets for naval engagements (Harpoon, C-Star, NLOS missiles, etc.); (7) Acquire more items for asymmetric warfare (Javelin, Stinger, drones, mines, standoff weapons, etc.); (8) Increase number of US military and allied advisers in the PH; (9) Set up on PH territory U.S. warfighting logistics to be activated if Article 3 of the MDT is invoked;
    .
    RISK LEVEL 4: (1) Establish BrahMos cruise missile site in the Batanes Island group & Palawan; (2) Base fighter and reconnaissance units in the Batanes Island group & Palawan; (3) Increase PH marine contingents in the Batanes Island group & Palawan; (4) Set up barriers around PH-held islands or shoals; (5) Use PH Navy assets (gray hulled warships) to escort PH supply ships;
    .
    RISK LEVEL 5: (1) Assign armed soldiers/marines to ride with PH fishermen; (2) Train and arm PH fishermen with light weapons and bulletproof vests (CAGFU?); (3) Artificially expand and more actively guard PH-held islands or shoals; (4) Use US Navy assets (gray hulled warships) to escort PH supply ships; (5) Replace BRP Sierra Madre with a newer and larger vessel (or vessels); (6) Reactivate Clark AB, Subic NB, Wallace NAS, Cubi Point NAS, Crow Valley, and other facilities; (7) Increase rotation & exercises of U.S. & Allied troops to the PH;
    .
    RISK LEVEL 6: (1) Permanently station a USAF tactical fighter / bomber wing in the PH; (2) Permanently station a USN carrier battle group in the PH; (3) Permanently station USN nuclear attack / ballistic submarines in the PH; (4) Permanently station a USN amphibious ready group with an MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) in the PH; (5) Permanently station US Army / US Marine battalions in the PH; (6) Invite Taiwanese troops as observers for Balikatan, Salaknib, and other exercises; (7) Similar to NATO, establish an IndoPac Defense Initiative comprising all like-minded countries;
    .
    RISK LEVEL 7: (1) Invite Taiwanese troops as full-participants for Balikatan, Salaknib, and other exercises; (2) Similar to NATO, establish an IndoPac Defense Initiative comprising all like-minded countries (including Taiwan); (3) Reestablish diplomatic relations with Taiwan; and (4) End diplomatic relations with the PRC.

    Taiwan was also a cousin of the Philippines. Formerly Formosa or Isla de Hermosa, was an enclave of the Spanish Crown in the 17th century before the Dutch won in the Eighty Years War. Thru scientific genetics and genealogy, our race originated from or thru the Taiwan islands.
    We share common beliefs of democracy. The Philippines will aid Taiwan should China executes her ambitions of regaining her "renegade" province. That is why the EDCA was expanded up to our northernmost tip of Basco Islands to develop it as a forward operating base (FOB) with the joint US-Philippines forces.

    I wonder if the idea of re establishing US bases in Philippine soil as a way of bolstering its security not just to the western territorial waters, but to the entire country has been considered by any government following the Cory government. I am not an expert on defense security, but the reason why Japan, Korea, and Taiwan have been able to keep their peace with regard to China's growing geopolitical, and military power is the fact that the U.S. maintain bases in these countries. Let us remember that any US facility is an extension of its territory. I believe the Philippines made a blunder in closing down its doors to US bases back in late the late 80's. Imagine if this idea would come to fruition, it will once again maintain a balance of power in Asia extending from the western part of the Pacific all the way to the Eastern Part.

Luckily, 1928 long before Indonesia was formed as a "new " country in 1945 those many parts of Indonesia decided to become as one nation, one language and ONE "island". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Pledge.
      In 1965 in Indonesia during political unrest, many Chinese immigrants (newly due to civil wars between national & comunist china), were slaughtered in Indonesia.. as a result due to competition/rivalry of both political system they called democratic (U.S.A) & communists (mainland china). Taiwanese don't know how Indonesian chinese immigrants suffering in 1965 because of their stubborness adding fuel to the rivalry between China & U.S unlike Japanese that solemnly accept defeat to U.S after atomic bomb (probably Taiwanese want the same ending ?) So I suggests to taiwanese.. don't be so selfish , no war is better then winning the war. Let's see if you really are in worse conditions in the future under mainland's rule..then from there you can rise up. I did respect U.S. and western countries, not anymore now. Too simplistic. China’s strategy is to divide and conquer the alliance in the region to gain a naval advantage in the pacific against the west. It’s in everyone interests to prevent China from fulfilling their goals which is why a Asian NATO is needed to counter the CCP expansion and conquest. It would be impossible for countries in the region like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Philippines to avoid the conflict so the best option is to be ready and prepared for such event.
