  • Liberia's government has launched an investigation into an American charity set up to help vulnerable girls, following a report into how the organisation dealt with allegations a staff member had raped pupils in its care.
The first More Than Me Academy was established in 2013 in the Liberian capital Monrovia by American, Katie Meyler. A former staff member, Macintosh Johnson, was accused of raping girls at the school.
Katie Meyler has temporarily resigned as CEO of the charity pending the outcome of the investigation. Finlay Young reports.

    I am loss for words.
This is the main reason I refused to donate to any charity that operates in Africa.

  • @melaniexoxo

This is sickening. The people and children of Liberia deserve so much better. Checks and balances should be in place from several sources. That she obviously didn’t give a thought to this is incredibly irresponsible. The HIV thing is repugnant. How could they not know. Their response is ugly besides that. Katie actually dated the guy and said they “remained close “ yet she didn’t know?

sad. they should have hired teachers locally, given women an opportunity to make make money and provide for their family, why on earth would you bring white non certified instructures on board.

That is ignorant to say . . I'm sure they know this . But just like anyone ,anywhere in the world...when you are so vulnerable and in such a shitty situation , you except anything at any cost to survive because it's better than the opposite , at that time...or you're not given a choice ......
When is the whole world going to see that not everything that glitters is gold should be the question , because then maybe real genuine help can be given.

Whatever mistakes she made at the start, Katie Meyler got off her ass and worked hard to do something out there, she stayed with the kids through the Ebola outbreak and she's still working now that with a vastly improved program.
Seems this charity was conned & used in the same way as every other charity in many, many countries. This program is angled that the people in charge are part of this big conspiracy, who just ignored child abuse. But it wasn't like that at all, that one guy was obviously very good at lying, manipulating and hiding what he did, just like Child Molesters in our own countries that get away with it for years. They got rid of him, and now have multiple other schools that are doing great work. They screwed up originally which let down those girls, but it's petty disgusting to say their Donors are all just interested in having nice pictures & videos as proof of how good they are, EVERY charity works like that! Who donates to Children in Need or The Red Cross and then flys out to other countries to check on who's in charge?? All charities have huge challenges when they have to rely on local people in areas of extreme poverty that don't have the luxury of formal references, qualifications or Police checks that we take for granted..

i dont technically think shes a bad person but she was very ignorant way in over her head and honestly could be perceived as lazy as well because she didn't check what macintosh died of when she could easily do it and didn't test all the possible victims.

She was sadly very corrupt as well, supported a warlord too. On surface level and to the west she looked amazing but she let people suffer, we’re just now actually getting things done. Grassroots organizations in Liberia, BY Liberians, is what’s actually saving people, not the government.
