Hearing Soren explain how much thought he puts into the way he helps guide Ronan through life was fascinating.
Then when you could hear the catch in his throat where he started to get emotional about it it was amazing.
    You're a great dad Soren.

You're both discussing the Peter Principle. Just heard about this in the Freakonomics podcast. It's basically that, because people crave status more than money (typically), companies tend to promote hardworking people right up until they're just incompetent enough at their current position that they can't justify a promotion anymore. This results in a large percentage of incompetent managers. This has been a statistically proven problem.
The solution is to not cap compensation so the great mechanic you have at the shop doesn't have to be promoted to be a crappy shop manager to be recognized for how good of a mechanic he is.
Schmidt was smart enough to not fall for it.

Sounds like the Cracked job evaluation rankings were maybe just not clearly defined for people having to fill them out. Where I work and where we use a similar scale, 3/5 is "Meets Expectations," 4/5 is "Above Expectations," and 5/5 is "Exceeds Expectations." Most of the time when I'm doing my own self-evaluation, it's 3s and 4s. They are of the opinion that 5s should really JUST be for people who are doing some surprisingly exceptional work, who are usually going far above and beyond. Someone who is just doing a great job would be maybe a 4.

Thanks for another really fun episode. It was fascinating to hear what management positions were like for the both of you at Cracked, and it really made me think about what I would do if I was ever offered a promotion like that. ♥

Advice for pleasing managers is giving them less work to do? Wow. What a scholarly, sage piece of wisdom.

I love how the manager of every corporate job I've had basically admit that nobody ever gets 5 out of 5 on anything for the employee review. We all know the system is bullshit. I wish I was ballsy enough to challenge them and say, "then what's the point of striving to be a great worker if nobody ever gets 5 out of 5?"
Also, I gotta push back on not asking a manager a question and trying to figure it out yourself. If you figure it out yourself, they do _not_ notice that. But I suppose it may depend on the job.

Yes comrade. You are an adult and as an adult your work does not need management. It does not need the rating of a person who doesn't even really care if you live or die. Well not past the inconvenience of training a new employee. The guy who exists to make sure you do as much work as possible despite you getting paid about $30 for every $200 you earn for the company.
Socialism is the key. Existing projects already feed or fed 100% outside of famines. Employee 100%. Yes even those evil Soviets. btw they also won the space race despite being the clear underdog devopment-wise... Socialists innovate more then capitalists... and no child goes hungry. No person is homeless. Your dog doesn't get put down because you can't afford to have its leg reset. How about... you get your cut of the work you did. The more hours the more pay. The worse the job the more pay. Guaranteed. You also get to vote as to what changes might be best... if any... it is assumed that you are an adult who has the capacity to decide. To stress... these are things current and past socialist projects have already achieved.
Vietnam can house everyone but America can't? China can feed everyone but America can't? Cuba can treat every persons medical needs... but America can't? These are not rich countries my friend. Ok so China is... but even when it wasn't people ate better then they did in Taiwan at the same time.

It is my experience that lazy, bad leaders will promote other people to lead for them so they do not have to. Even if that other person is not ready to be a leader. It is a skill set. I can imagine it would be hard to go from writer to manager with no formal training.
