  • Who thinks of owning a Scion xA? I certainly didn't think I would, but this really is a perfect car if you need a beater or live in the city.

    I owned a 2006 manual XA from 2010 to 2019 when I handed it off to my son. He taught himself to drive stick and in late 2022 still drives it approaching 180,000 miles. Under the body, every Scion is a Toyota. The XA is a Yaris, which is an upgraded Tercel. The boxy Scion XB is a 4-cylinder Camry - and the 2006 Camry is one of the greatest cars ever built!

      I have the chance to buy a 2004 Xa with 349,000 mi on it and I have to be honest, I am seriously worried. But at only $1,000 and the fact they're the original owners with tons of maintenance records after reading your comment, I feel a little less worried. It's the manual transmission and I JUST bought a 2001 Volkswagen bug, had it 4 weeks and the manual transmission completely died, so again, that lended to my worry.
      Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions about what I should be looking for before I actually purchase this car with such high mileage?

      @@angelas449 These Scion's are SUPER reliable and can go MANY miles. I know of several that have over 400,000 miles on them and are still going. But at 350k it is approaching the end of it's life cycle. You will be rolling the dice but possibly could get another 100k or so, but who knows. Good luck.

      @@JosephMBoyer I got mine from a friend of the family that had it and only paid $2500.00. But mine was in a very light front end wreck that totaled it out but was just very light wreck. The family member driving it hit a tow hitch on a truck in front of them. It needed a hood a grill radiator and condenser. I would say three grand is about right for one with 150,000 you will probably put a clutch in it but the motor should last for 300,000 as long as it’s in good shape now.I put about 25,000 miles on mine now No issues. It’s very simple with no features but with new stereo wireless CarPlay remote start it keeps it just simple enough to be perfect and reliable.

    I bought mine for $1,500 in 2016 from the original owner. 8 years later still driving it as my daily commute and it’s running Iike a champ. I would buy it all over again.
    I have had a lot of issues with the AC, which cost me about $1,500 to fix. And the clutch did need replacing but the car has never broken down on me even when I drove it without oil for a week! 😮 now I know it burns oil (they couldn’t find any leaks) so I check the oil weekly and top it off (it needs a quart about every 2-3 months)

  • @jamessouthworth1699
    @jamessouthworth1699 Před 2 lety +9

    You mentioned you wouldn't take it on long trips but the fuel economy is exactly why I love using mine for long trips with the automatic actually getting slightly better mileage than the manual version of this car. I find the seats comfortable enough and the visibility is great since the seats are up off the floor. With the back seats fliped down I've gone on several multi-state trips with a passenger and we still had plenty of room for all our luggage.

  • @packard5682
    @packard5682 Před 2 lety +5

    Everyone tries to say the automatic is not the transmission to have but my 2006 xA is an automatic and it runs just fine (59,500 miles). I drove many different manuals over the years and sometimes an auto is better than a manual. I am pretty much over the constant shifting all day long in traffic. Everyone has a preference and should respect other people's transmission preferences without putting one or the other down because of personal bias.

  • @Geotpf
    @Geotpf Před 3 lety +10

    I have had one of these since I bought it new in August 2005 (very early 2006 model). It has about a third as many miles, same color, an automatic, the rare side airbags (only about 5% of them have these) and several dealer/port installed accessories your car lacks, namely a rear spoiler and a center armrest for the front. (Any Toyota dealer should be able to order and install an armrest if you wish to add it; helps a lot on long drives.)
    My car is very reliable, fun to drive (needs a few more horsepower but is fun to chuck around corners; handling at the limits is very predictable), and surprisingly roomy (can carry four adults and a small amount of cargo or two adults and a lot of cargo with the rear seats folded down). As you mentioned, probably the best visibility out of any car ever made; no blind spots.
    I have absolutely no plans of getting rid of the car any time soon.

    Drive one currently - as someone in a beach city, this car is beautiful. Small, allows me to drive on tight roads with little to no concern, and despite the amount of wear it takes from the salt and the mediocre roads, the thing still runs well.
