    After 14 years I'm still beyond grateful for and amazed by what I've learned from content creators. "Simple" things like this are not simple until people like yourself help us make it simple. The time I spent watching this probably saved an hour, and possibly kept me from making a mess of my new body. Cheers

    A few things about protection: paint can be bad for skin, so wear gloves when painting. Also, paint above surfaces you don't want to ruin or protect them.
    And I hate to see poked bodies, so I prefer to use magnets instead.

      These guys don’t know what they’re talking about. You paint the outside for most paint jobs but people will “back” their chosen color with a different coat on the inside. It makes the coat on the outside “pop” and adds a lot of depth to the color. It has nothing to do with protecting the paint job!

    Here's a trick that has worked for me for years. Rather than purchase a bunch of expensive dinky spray cans of Tamiya or Pactra polycarbonate paint that doesn't coat properly. Simply purchase one can of clear coat and give the inside of the body a coating of that. That will create a perfectly good base for other paints to adhere too. I myself recommend either Krylon 2X or Krylon Fussion paints... I have never had a problem with the Krylon paint chipping or peeling using this method.. Once again you need to coat it with polycarbonate clear coat first as a base

    • @Spindrift-id1ez
      @Spindrift-id1ez Před 4 lety

      @@ado3769 If your talking about using actual automotive paint like on a real car? I couldn't say for sure but I wouldn't use it. That stuff is pretty thick for RC bodies. But the real person who would know about it's flexibility should be the guy painting your daily driver. And if he does fine detail air brush work for designs or pinstriping, That paint is usually thinner and might be ok if done in light coats.. But once again he would know more about the properties of that paint than I would... All that said, I have a thing that works for me, But I'll never claim to be an expert

    • @Spindrift-id1ez
      @Spindrift-id1ez Před 4 lety

      @sleepy jaguar All I can say is I've never had a problem with it, But then I only apply it in no more than two thin coats.. And that's only after applying the clear polycarbonate as a base for the Krylon to adhere to.. And I drive a 2wd Slash basher if ya get the idea, And not once in several years of doing this have I had any chipping like one might get if they used for example regular model paint which is definitely way to thick

      I do the same. You can get 3 light coats done in about 15 minutes. When drying with a hair dryer you can actually see the paint shine go flat letting you know it's dry. Allow 2-3 minutes for the body to cool before applying the next coat.

A couple of Qs though - if you don't get window mask stickers with your shell, any tips on masking from scratch? Do I just need to cut masking tape to fit? Also did you paint the black window surrounds with a brush at the end? Cheers.

    • @HobbiesDirect
      @HobbiesDirect  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Adam, thanks for your positive feedback and comment. Yes, If your clear body doesn't come with factory window masks, you can use masking tape and trim the edges to fit the window lines. Just be careful not to layer up to many strips of masking tape as the tape can lift/raise leading to paint to bleed. Nah, I didn't brush on the window surrounds, this particular HPI body came with window stickers. If your body doesn't come with window stickers like this one, you can brush them on or use a black permanent marker.

      Depends on the tape, some masking tapes can leave some of the adhesive on the body which I clean off with Tamiya body cleaner #87118

    you would’ve saved so much time masking the hood and painting it black after the orange if you wanted a black backing for the last layers, thanks for the help!
