  • Hi there, I made this video to show people how I hydro dip the inside of my RC car bodies. I'm using Tamiya PS paint and a tub full of water. It's a really fun processes and the results are awesome. I experimented with candy paints in the video but all Tamiya PS paints work. I hope this video gives you what you need to try it yourself! Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe for more videos!

    I did this using Marble dip on a Mardave body 22years ago lol...balanced the shell upside down and had a small hole in the roof with a bit of tape over it, filled it with water then add the paint/dip .Pull the tape off and release the water. It left the paint on the inside of shell, then I added a little glitter before the dip dried last thing to do is spay over the dip(I used white) to make it really stand out.

    I mix in 1/2 cup of denatured alcohol for every 3 gallons of water. it makes the paint thinner and takes longer to set so you don't have to rush it. Turned out sick though!

    You should try to spray some hydrodiping activator on the water first? Might help stop the paint curing to fast.

    Thanks for the instruction! You said you cut out the protective layer and sprayed black, then used a marker for the black trim pieces? So this black trim was actually applied from the top of the car, while all the other colors are underneath? I think the last shot of your video should be with it mounted to the car frame so we can see the whole look. Again, thanks for sharing the technique.

    • @Drift66
      @Drift66  Před rokem +7

      If I like how it looks, is it a waste? Plus, I don't use a full can per paint job. So i can do multiple bodies per can. Hydro film is even harder to apply on the inside. In my opinion, it looks terrible anywhere that's not a flat surface. To each their own.

  • @FranBushardt
    @FranBushardt Před rokem +2

    The Warmer or Semi hot the Water, THE BETTER as the Paint will not set as Fast and be more workable!! I have done this with Model Cars!!

  • @vicecity7474
    @vicecity7474 Před rokem +2

    It comes out better if you spay back and forth across the water and DO NOT STIR IT. The point is this is so all the paint sits on top of the water not mixed up in chunks throughout it

  • @frydady420
    @frydady420 Před rokem +1

    That turned out really good. I didn't realize how easy this is to do. Now I'm curious if you could try a stencil design/logo in the middle somewhere while dipping. I guess it would just be better to stencil a logo straight onto the body before dipping. Either way I think it could be the next test in your experimenting skills.

    • @Drift66
      @Drift66  Před rokem

      I don't have any problems with paint flaking off because I use polycarbonate paint for rc car bodies. Having run both my hydro-dipped bodies for a while now, neither has chipped or flaked off.

  • @hrd4603
    @hrd4603 Před rokem +1

    I've never painted an RC body before and I want to do something more than just a solid colour or a gradient fade. It's for a drift car. I think I might try this on some lexan offcuts first before moving to the actual car. I think blue and purple look great, but i'm tempted by red, yellow and orange, backed with lame flake first as I want the rainbow effect, then a bright silver.

    • @Drift66

  • @tonysmith7989

    The way I hydro dipped mine was filling the tub up with water adding ice and putting ice packs in until the ice melts and the water is still ice cold. It allows the paint to float on the water without clumping. And with holes in the body, you wont have to rotate just slowly at an angle lower it in and the air comes through the holes allowing the paint to stick inside. Then wiping the access away before pulling ot out. Still have to do it a couple times unless you spray a translucent color about 2 coats then use black and pearl or your choice of 2 colors and use those to hydro dip. Then back it. Or hydro dip with 2 colors then spray a 3rd to fill in the clear spaces before backing. Nice color choice. My first one was racing blue, black and gunmetal. Second was yellow and silver streak.

    • @Drift66
      @Drift66  Před rokem +1

      With drift bodies you don't want any holes otherwise I'll try the ice out.

    It works better if you first off spray a light base coat on the inside of the body, like how you’d spray a solid color on any kind of clear lexeon body. This could’ve filled in the majority of the clear areas he still had after finishing his first layer of the dip. And spraying your color choices in a smaller paper cup including the same amount of clear in with other color choices. And If you think about this example as in a wax candle. Heat will melt it but when you put that still hot liquid wax into a cup of cold water, it instantly hardens back up and takes its forum. This procedure is kind of the same As in the cold water turns it into more of a film like layer. And that there is how you want the paint to forum into

    • @Drift66
      @Drift66  Před rokem

      The problem with spraying a "base coat" is your car is now primarily that color. The first layer is the first one you see. So if you don't mind all your colors tinted whatever color you used, then yes, this would work.

    Looks very marble like. Multiple dips is used only because the paint cures too fast right?

    • @Drift66
      @Drift66  Před rokem +1

      I do multiple dips because the paint won't cover the whole body in one go. When you dip the inside it pulls the paint up into the body instead of spreading it like when you dip normally. So if you cover the whole surface of the water it would only cover the sides of the body due to pulling the paint in different ways.

    Hello. I'm a first timer. Where do I find the protective covering for the outside? Also, I've heard of guys sanding the surface to help the paint adhere to the body. What kind of sandpaper do I use and how hard do I sand it?

    • @Drift66
      @Drift66  Před 3 měsíci

      The protective film is already on the outside of new bodies. I don't scuff my bodies, I don't think it's necessary. If you want to do it, just use a scotch bright pad and lightly scuff the inside. Just make sure not to touch the windows. You can't fix scuff marks in places you don't want them.
