Epic Table Fan - Restoration

- This is a very nice Vintage Table Fand, made in France in 1950.
The base of this Table Fan is made from bakelite and was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It was developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, in 1907.
I started this restoration by disassemblyof all parts.
After that i cleaned them in the parts washer from Kai IBS Germany with a special cleaner Purgasol.
To remove rust from the bolts and metal parts i used rust remover from MC-51.
To remove the paint from the propeller i used paint stripper gel.
After that i start sanding the metal parts with sanding paper .
To prepare for painting i used a cleaner from IBS BLITZ.
To protect from rust i applied 2 coats of primer.
After one hour in rust remover all bolt and metal parts was free of rust. To protect them from oxidation i applied a spray from IBS name MULTIFIX.
I cleaned the rotor and stator with a tooth brush and Blitz cleaner.
To remove all dents from the badge i used a smal hammer covered in tape to be more softer and after that i applied 2 coats of clear laquer for protection.
After primer was dry i start sanding to remove dust and make more smoother, and i applyed 2 coats of black metalic paint and 2 coats o clear laquer on top.
To make the propeller shiny i used polish compound fine grit and a cloth wheel.
To polish bakelite i utilized a car polish from Meguiars and a new clooth wheel.
To make even more shiny i applied original wax from Simoniz.
After that i made new gaskets from felt and i changed the old power cord.
From here i started the rebuilding!
Thank you for watchin and let me know what do you think about this restoration and my new style of editing

“Hey, you know what this fan is missing... a little bit of asbestos” “let’s put it right in the middle so everybody gets a good whiff”
But seriously... the paint coming off those fan blades was the most satisfying paint removal ever.
There is literally a town called Asbestos. They probably did it to be on trend.
@DARK APPERITION I suppose it prevents the heat from the motor being transfer to the cage

Haha you got me :-) when you "restored" that cable with history inside i screamed out "Nooooooo, that's the worst idea ever". That joke was really great, i had to laugh out so loud when you threw the cable in the garbage. It was perfectly edited and the timing was on point. Not even the cable scene, the whole video was very good :-)
🤣🤣🤣
That scene was nice sarcasm xD
Oh my gosh I thought the exact same thing. I saw him putting the cable in and I thought, “That’s gonna look terrible” I breathed a sigh of relief when I found out it was a joke

You will quickly regret polishing the fan blade. When sunlight hits it, that's when you realize you made a disco ball that spins at several hundred RPM. :D
Maybe that was the plan 🤔😉😆
I'm thinking that it was a joke about your statement, but in case it isnt, you shouldnt be worried... We have fans like that in my country, it isnt a issue.

There's something oddly comedic about that bit to me! XD
My absolute favorite part is when you test them out at the end, I was crushed when it didn’t work the first time 🤣🤣
Great video! Just a little information for everyone:
The 3 holes in the base are for bolts, nuts and hollow rubber feet., for sitting on a table, or leave them off, and use the holes for mounting on a wall or ceiling.
This fan was originally mounted to the ceiling, or high up on a wall somewhere. They are missing, and the center medallion was "upside down" in the first of the video for it to be sitting on the table.
Thats also why the center tag is so clean on the base. It probably spent most of its life against a wall or ceiling.
The neck screw is supposed to be a wing nut so you can adjust the angle. Mine has one. Great video btw 😅
Edit: I just saw how old this video is lol

If something is unsafe, then replacement isn't a big deal. I don't know why people watch videos if they are going to pick apart the content. Your restorations aren't destroying history. Quite the opposite. You are bringing new life to something that would normally end up in a landfill. Love your videos!

That is a fire hazard. It's just a cable. Remember the Ship of Theseus.
I have an old 8mm projector that I run like that, as I haven't got a replacement cable. Just separated the wires and insulated them individually to not short out.
@Jamie Cook unless he’s going for a Darwin Award you’re completely right.
oh my god my anxiety went through the roof when you started reusing that cable. thankfully you tore it out and REPLACED it. no fires here.
My inner voice was screaming, “NOOOOOOO!”
Dude here is giving life to history and people are complaining that he destroys history just because he doesnt use something worn out from the original piece. Keep doing what you do Tysy! We love you!
Thank you for this video. I have two fans that had belong to my grandparents, post WWII, I will now restore.
Thank you for making this look factory new. Too many people on CZcams believe restoring antique items means making them look old, with tarnished metal and so on. I think that's doing a disservice to the great men and women who originally designed and made these items, let's see them shine!
Tricked me with that cable, no lie. Glad you went new!
I love these fans of bakelite and metal , they're very decorative and beautiful.
Definitely not destroying history! It’s like turning a black and white film to a color film... Artistic beauty...
As a spaniard I'd never buy a fan who's called HEAT in my language.
GoodbyeStranger1 haha! Or a “Chevy Nova” that GM attempted to sell in Mexico for awhile. 😂😂
In the 90's Mitsubishi released their "Pajero" model in Spain. The car company didn't realize that "pajero" means "a man that masturbates a lot" in Spain.
as a brazillian, i totally agree.
That's what I was thinking the whole time.
IKR!!!
I speak Portuguese, same issue here. Actually I saw signs over a building that was being constructed here in Canada with the companies name plastered all over it "FRACO" lol, dont know if I'd want such a building company
Why would anyone say you want to destroy history. You are restoring historic products and doing the best you can to give them new life. People are really dumb sometimes.
thank you so much for support 😊
Exactly
I know right! That nasty cable was *way* more dangerous to users than the asbestos disk he replaced, but nobody would ever complain about that.
I agree, it's not like he is taking it apart and using the motor for something else and trashing the rest. Takes it apart, cleans it and makes it look nice and better then new to last another 50 to 100 years.
Lol-the same thing happened when I restored *both* my 1920s Westinghouse and Hunter table fans. After several hours spent working on each, rewiring and all, they wouldn’t turn on! One of them even kinda kicked back some sparks at first so I unplugged it, used a few expletives, and went inside for the night. The next morning I realized I’d made an amateur electrical mistake and reverse connected the wiring to the stator. 🤦🏻♂️ Easy fix, and now I have two fans that work better on their lowest setting than any modern bought fan works on its highest. Love your videos Tysy, and your bunny slippers. 😆
I am just so happy he didn’t reuse the cable. Sure many people will yell about the history, but if it wasn’t for the restoration then it would have been in a junk yard as scrap. The fact that he restores it so it is given a new life is worth watching.
That smile in the reflection of the fan blade. :D
You didn't destroy any history..Great work. You always make something better, dam the haters.
Judy G. Restoration doesn’t inherently mean restored to its exact specifications when it was first made. If it goes from rusty and not working to rust free and working are you claiming it isn’t restored just because it changed colour?
@Judy G. Oh, pish, tosh. Absolute nonsense.
Sorry, but there, to preserve its antiquity, goes cable lined gender like that of electric irons. Best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
You have proved again you are the king of restoration video! Well done fan. I was horrified you were going to black tape the old wire. You crown was slipping. Good joke
I watch you every day and can't get enough. Gold standard again.
Excellent job as usual! Don't mind the critics, everybody is an expert on everything on the internet. Keep following your instincts and experience, they got you here!
You got me with the cable thing. I got so mad, I started talking at you through the screen. "So you just restoring stuff now for looks, ok well I can't wait to see you plug that s*** in, this is the dumbest thing I've seen!" Then you threw it in the trash, and actually breathed a sigh of relief!!
🤣
Seriously though!! I legitimately came down to the comments for this exact reason and was happy to see that most people were on the same page.
You got me on that "keeping the history of wire" lol, that wire was so dangerous to use, that cable can set a house or an office in a fire and make them as history as well :D
Like for replacing it :)

Don't forget the shocking twist where he makes us think he is using the original cable and then rips it out and throws it in the bin and replaces it with a brand new one. I was glued to my seat (otherwise I would have got up to get a drink).
I love a fan restore . I have a fan from 1948!!!!! Works just fine after i fixed it up! The paint of them blades was 100% done later , blades on fans form that time where 99.9% of the time just polished metal.
Oh by the way , the cloth type washers should have oil on them. You cannot run an old fan dry , not like the modern crappy china bearings that last 2 months.
cool 👍
Yes I should think the upside down Logo is evidence some goof painted the blades and reinstalled it upside down.
A very awkward removal of impeller and (non-functional, show-piece) guard.
Samuel Fellows, why do you call the guard non-fuctional? I am not disagreeing with you, just curious. Are the gaps in it too big?
I had a mini heart attack when I saw the thumbnail because I thought he decided to paint the fan blades with polka dots!
I really love the minor details/sense of humour. Definitely watching this!
WOW! I never knew Bakelite could polish up like that! So cool! ❤
my neither
Why not?? treated well, nearly everything can shine up well.....Preservation of shine is the only issue u have...sometimes clear coat is ok, sometimes natural degradation works good
And in this case, the high gloss shine provides a function. Dust is less likely to settle and stick to a highly polished surface than a flat or matte one. Nice going.
Hahahahaha brilliant mate I really liked the funny bits you put in definitely worth while watching. Thanks for sharing

Awesome! Its totally fascinating! My dad, god rest his soul, could fix anything. We use to call him MaCGyver. When he was 10yrs old which would have been 1936, his mothers electric ringer washer broke down. She had called a repairman to come fix it. While she was gone shopping my dad tore it down and fixed it by the time she got home. I was daddys little girl and spent hrs out in the garage watching and learning from everything he did. He always had something on the work bench he was repairing or making old into new again. He would quiz me and say...baby girl what is this part and what does it do? Lol He taught me so much except how to live without him. 😢

thank you so much 😊
He trolled the trools :-)
TysyTube Restoration great work! Subbed! I just wanted to add two things.
If you punch things like felt, cork, rubber or other malleable materials it will happen on the first strike with your punch if you use a surface with give for the punch to cut through all the way. Layered cardboard, softwoods, anything that will allow it to punch through cleanly. That anvil will also dull and eventually mushroom the cutting rim.
The fan guard (yeah looks real safe haha) was powder coated or ceramic coated originally just like the base. You can easily do this especially with small objects and for cheap too. The powder coating guns and setup can be gotten at harbor freight and the powders are cheap online or locally at a large coating facility that often toss out barrels of the stuff when they change to a new product run and don’t have storage space.
For the heating element you can use a toaster oven or a kitchen oven from Craigslist. If you’re really feeling ambitious you can do what I did years ago and get an old freezer off the side of the road and gut it. Then place the heating elements from an old oven on the top and bottom. The oven controls are easy enough to wire outside on the side or door. The only thing I’d probably do differently is remove the stock insulation and put something high temp instead because the stock stuff smoked and stuff lol. It stopped eventually and the outer steel skin never got too hot to cause an issue but it would be nice to feel more comfortable with what the insulation is lol.
Cause he is his boss lol. Its his channel. That kind of made no sense what you said lol.
Yeh great stuff again. Thanks

See how the logo on the front is upside-down and the holes around the base? That fan was designed to be mounted to the ceiling.
Superb work, as usual!
maybe 🤣
I did wonder, saw it upside down and thought I was going mad 😂
I suspect the holes in the base were for rubber feet.
The keyhole in the base was for hanging on a nail or screw in the wall. The upside down logo was from a clownish previous refurberation.
great job 😀. I really liked the contrast of the silver blades with the dark body and the dark protection grid. that contradictory that a fan has the mark "HEAT" 😂.
I think that the paint on the blades was added somewhere during the life of the blade. Notice how it accumulated a lot of grime - seems to me it was some incorrectly-chose "what they had at hand" paint, probably it was used in a sunny-side room and the blades caught a lot of sun reflections, so the owner just went and painted it in the color of the bakelite. The way it was so easy to peel off - looks like it was like a wall paint. What do you think? I wonder if the author could shed some light, but I never saw painted blades before that. Either plastic or bare metal.
Congratulations and thank you for watching your videos, you made my day more beautiful!
