Vintage Fan Restoration Time Lapse

- Purchased this small fan from a local antique shop. The cord was completely gone and unsafe to test. Visibly the fan had a broken mounting bolt from the top of the cage. Paint was in poor shape and the fan didn't turn well by hand. After disassembly, I found that the wiring on the inside of the fan was also broken and needed to be repaired. Once all of the parts were cleaned and painted the faulty wiring was cut off the coil. A new set of wires going to the brushes were soldered in as well as the new power cord. The Grommets were replaced as the one in the base was rotted away and the one for the fan housing was simply missing. Once rewired The fan was reassembled. At first I found that the fan was running backwards (not shown in video) Turns out I reversed the two brush wires, after taking the fan back apart and fixing the fan now turns the correct way. It definitely needs new bushings and the fan blade balanced. I currently have no way of making the bushing but will likely return to do this once i have a small shop lathe. Overall, I am very happy with how the fan turned out. I Attempted to clean up the badge on the front of the fan and ended up making it worse (Only disappointment of this restoration)
One interesting thing to note. The brushes are housed in a brass sleeve that has a brass screw exposed on either side of the back fan housing. This is a shock hazard, If anyone were to touch both sides of the fan or instinctively pick it up from the back of the housing where it actually feels very comfortably to do so, they would get shocked.

Those old fans can really push the air. When I was growing up in Alabama every office had several going during the summers.
I agree. I have three of these old fans. They still work great. I wouldn't trade them for a hundred new fans with their flimsy plastic blades.
Nice job. Maybe you can get a decal for the badge. I've never had luck cleaning them so I don't. Straighten the blades and put some oil on the shaft and it will be a lot quieter and put out a nice breeze. I have several fans from the early and mid 60's. They look their age but run like new

Another beauty. I actually have three of these old fans: 16" Emerson, 12" Emerson Junior, 10" Kenmore. The large one was made in 1937 if I remember correctly. The other two are newer. I'd say '50s or '60s. They still work great. And man, do they move the air! I love 'em.

This is a very cool little fan and certainly worthy of restoration. I noticed that you invested in some nice painting equipment after this video was made. Gone are the days of shaking up cans of spray paint!
Very nice restoration for everything you did, however, you did become a little lax with the part of the cord that goes into the motor. You should have cut those feild coil wires shorter, and attached the new cord nearer to the coils, so the new cord went completely into the casing. Instead of having the heat shrinked wires visible. Would have just looked a little more finished.

I used to be a fan club in 2007 but I moved out of state. I still had some old GE Brass blade fan and still wounder if you can restore these old fan for me. I am currently does not have skills and tools.

Hey chip channel restorations, would I be able to ask a few questions regarding a polar cub fan that I am trying to restore? From looking at the motor, it’s basically the same. It’s a now 100 year old Polar cub Type G made in 1921. I’ve restored the fan cosmetically to its original glory of silver cast iron and brass blades, but the rewiring I’m a little confused on.
Everything on the outside looks good but old.
You can refurb the badge by etching and repainting.
It looks a little black inside. Maybe it burn up some inside. That way it was when I got it. Like to have it working again

That looks like a “Polar Cub” fan.
Two questions so I can make sure I do the right thing with my fan: What did you prime the blade with before spray painting it gold? And why did you not prime the whole body before painting it black? I love the work you did. Working on a similar project right now; I'm in the cleaning phase.
Thank you! The spray paint that I used on the body had paint + primer. Thus I skipped the primer step. The Paint that I used on the fan blade was only paint. With it being a flat smooth surface I wanted to make sure that it had great adhesion and so I used a primer first. Thank you for watching! I'd love to see your video if you are going to post it!

Old fan use brush type motor maybe that’s why it so noisy 😅
What color are the fan blades Gold or Brass?

Nice restoration. I wonder how many kid’s lost a finger with that fan back in the old days? Also, no ground and an all metal body is a recipe for electrocution if there should ever be a short inside the housing. The only thing insulating that body from you is the paint. But, looks nice. I would only use it as a decoration, though.
