Adam Savage's Very First Lightsaber Prop Replica!

  • In his journey recreating his favorite film props, Adam has made many lightsabers. But this machined replica of Luke's lightsaber was Adam's first foray into prop replication using reference photos he took of the original. He made this in Jamie's shop over 25 years ago after seeing the prop in a touring Star Wars exhibition. And even though it is far from a perfect replica, it holds up as capturing the essence of the prop and the gratifying experience of making the prop his own.

I have the resin cast they made for the tested episode on making silicone molds. Adam was even kind enough to sign it, along with Michael Stevens From Vsauce, when the wife & I went to their live show & did the meet & greet.
I had tweeted Adam, & the live show pictures asking if he would sign it, turns out they were trying to track me down. ( long story short they did not want people trying to get things signed , it was a big group & we got a signed photo & picture so no big. As we are getting towards our turn i make my wife take the lightsaber out of her purse ( to her objections ;) ) because i just wanted to show Adam that the Tested Fan-base was strong on the East coast as well. )
Adam chatted with us for a second , & told us to hang out until they were done. Once everyone had finished we got to spend about 15 mins with Adam & Michael. Both of them were as wonderful & honest of people as you could have hoped. You can meet your heroes. I put the picture up on my twitter a few minutes ago.

Adam, your discorse around props makes me think of playing guitar and learning songs that you like. You hear a song, you fall in love with it so you try to learn it. In doing so you learn more about the creator and how they think. Time goes buy, the internet became a thing and communities learn more about the details of how things were made. You revisit songs, learn the details and become reengaged with the creation. I'm 31 and have played since I was 15 and I am now having moments just like you discuss in this video. I am so happy you are making and putting out content through this tough time. Melbourne, Australia is in lockdown and I am a teacher working from home with a 3 and 1 year old. Such a cool story, Adam! It's awesome that Mark Hamill actually held and signed a lightsaber hilt that you created with your own hands!
Luke's ROTJ lightsaber is definitely my favorite out of all the movie props, and I have two replicas of it (a Saberforge Prodigal Son that's a bit too big/long dimensions-wise, and a much more accurately sized VadersVault Hero Gen2). I even have a Lego brickbuilt model of the saber hilt.

Adam, I would love to see a video of you making an Obi Wan lightsaber. That's always been my favorite. If anyone could do it right it would definitely be you, sir. And also I would like to add that you've provided such positivity entertainment and goodwill in these hard times I thank you so much.

The original Obiwan hilt from A New Hope was not machined. It was assembled. There is a man named Roman Gomez who spent years hunting down every single parts that made up the original Obiwan hilt from 1977. It's mostly antique military parts. A sink knob for the pommel. A plane machine gun booster, a Graflex camera clamp. A british grenade that's designed to be shot from a rifle and a plane engine valve for the emitter. After he found every part he decided that he could have exact replicas made of every part. He has a website called Roman Props and I got one of his Obiwan Hilt. They are the closest thing you can get to what Alec Guiness had attached to his belt.

One of my favorite parts of making things or creating a replicate with incomplete or imperfect references is it takes on a personality of itself and imbued with the makers own. The eccentricities end up being the character of the piece and whatever other dings or patinas it picks up. Its no longer a replica of Luke's saber. Its your saber. But that energy and enthusiasm of the goal comes through no matter the abnormalities. I remember my first big cosplay was a mostly redyed Ledger Joker made from thrifted clothes. In actuality it looked nothing like his unless through squinted eyes under muddy water. But everyone said how perfect it was. It was my Joker but everyone could feel exactly what it was intended to be, inaccurate or not. Sometimes the imperfections are what make it fun and meaningful.
Geez I really need to build a lightsaber

    Very cool, Adam!
I’m kind of a lightsaber nut. I have a collection of ten “Store Bought” sabers, but I’ve always wanted to build one from scratch. A friend and I had talked about making a couple on his metal lathe, but we never quite got around to it and he passed away unexpectedly a little over a year ago. That’s a memory that I’d really have liked to have shared with him, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be (Sorry about the sad stuff there). The closest I’ve ever gotten was as a 10 year old, back in ‘79. I attempted to make a Graflex replica from an old Burgess signal wand (which was actually a knockoff saber). It was all from memory, so it wasn’t/isn’t very accurate (yours looks AWESOME), but I still have it to this day, 41 years later, just for the sentimental value attached to it. Anyways, keep up the great work, Adam! You’ve basically gotten to live out my childhood Dreams (employment wise) and I love your videos, especially the Star Wars related ones. I’ve followed you on Facebook for awhile, but I’ve just subscribed here, so I’ll be looking forward to your future videos.
May The Force be with you.
