In a world of sometimes questionable self taught "professionals" on CZcams, it's really nice listening to someone with real world experience.
Self teaching isn't bad, it's a good place to start. The problem is getting certified which most people can't afford.
Those who weren't able to advance through nepotism probably weren't worth much anyway.
@@arthurballs2754 That's the dumbest thing I've heard. Nepotism is not a guarantee you have the skills and knowledge. Nepotism is usually the result of corruption and laziness. Otherwise kingdom royalty would still be revered and preferred.

I love how deep the questions are getting. The people who really have a passion for what they're getting into and are really thinking about the effects and the meanings and the implications of things are turning up and bringing things into the light that most people don't even consider and I love that. I feel like 2020 has really influenced people to think about the possible repercussions and rewards of the previously mundane, and I'm really hoping that we get the opportunity to continue that into a sort of philosophical renaissance or revolution in the future. I just feel like 2020 has brought a whole new level of awareness of self and togetherness into being and I'm fascinated to see what it develops into.

The Animatrix cannot be praised enough for how great it is. It builds so much on the lore and world-building of the Matrix universe while exploring how feasible the whole machine overlord scenario can be.
Also, the graphic design point he made in the middle of the video was spot on. As a student going through those growing pains at the time, I can say that it mirrored what he mentioned about practical vs. CG model makers. Those with higher understandings of traditional art and graphic design tended to struggle more learning digital programs (myself included). However, that traditional background made for a stronger foundation in the long run. I'm a firm believer of learning the old ways to improve upon the new ones because of this.
As soon as you mentioned about the lag in CGI knowledge, te first thing that popped into my head was The Gallery with the 3D soundstage and the ipad and what they were achieving with CGI with that technology. It was absolutely mindblowing that that’s where ILM is at with CGI now!
Great video! Love how Adam gets so excited answering questions. Really shows how passionate he is about what he does.
I think another great example of the droid/life question is the Twilight Zone episode "The Lonely". Really hits home on those philosophical questions about what we consider life and the feelings of manufactured beings.

That animatrix episode he is talking about is called The Second Renaissance. I agree completely. Thank you so much for shouting it out, Adam. It's extremely underrated.
An amazing exploration (and somewhat prophetic example) of the ethics around sentient androids is the Star Trek The Next Generation episode “measure of a man”, where a hearing is held to determine if Data (an Android) is property or a free being. Fantastic writing, amazing acting, and a great example of where Trek shines. It’s going to be a thorny problem for humanity in the future. I highly recommend tracking down and watching the episode.

The question about droids reminds me of the Eberron setting for D&D playing a warforged allows one to play with that question in interesting ways.

I've grown up like alot of Americans idolizing celebrities and the like, but Adam Savage is the only person who ive grown up watching that I want to meet and just talk with, if I ever got to build something with him or call him a friend, id probably just be the happiest person. Adam's energy and love for his craft inspires me so much, greatest role model out there, and I'm aware I sound kind of cheesy, but its true, I can't wait to meet you, dont know how or when but I know it will happen

I saw the touring Star Wars exhibition when it came to Melbourne. My oldest brother took me to see Star Wars in 1978. I was three! To see the original props was a real blast!
I know that The Mandalorian uses more "practical" special effects. They don't even use blue screen, they have a stage with huge LED screens.
Oh man it feels like forever since I've seen the Animatrix skits but as soon as you described them, it all came flooding back.
My favorites are the kids and the runner.

I've always liked *Adam* on *MythBusters* and in interviews. But I really didn't think watching Q & A's would be all that interesting. But he is not only enthusiastic, but quite engaging, no matter what he's talking about. And he really gets you excited about the topic.

David Gerold's "When HARLIE was One" (second release) is a wonderful read for the exploration of sentience.
just wanted to let you know, i've adopted the check box system from your book. i've modified it some that the box is more gradually filled in instead of just the half check/full check. it's been really helpful for me as a morning engineer. we only have three shifts instead of a full four, so coming in, in the morning being able to look at the white board and getting a general idea of where a job is at without having anyone from the previous shift to talk to is incredibly helpful.
What you are leaving out is that you are astoundingly good at your job.
The minute The Animatrix was mentioned I was quickly reminded why I've always enjoyed "myth busters dialogue". Thank you for always dropping those trivial knowledge bombs that I feel so awkward sharing in my real life lol. Not many people in my circles have seen it.
You are absolutely correct about the Animatrix. The episodes you mention are my favorites. Another good episode is when the kid frees himself. Helps to explain who the kid is in the final two movies.

Goes to show, it really is who you know, not what you know. Despite how much we love Adam and how great he is now.
In this case Adam knew those people that went to bat for him from previous work, not some son of a producer. Big Huge Glaring difference. Adam got to ILM on merit, not because he married someone working on Star Wars.
From what I gathered, it seemed to be the case that the person he thought Adam was was someone who he *had* interviewed, i.e., someone who interviewed poorly. I didn't gather that he was throwing away the resume just because he didn't know who Adam was. I could be wrong! :^] But that's what I got from what was said.
Did he have such long explanations, back in the old ILM days, cause that might make me chuck out his resume.

Adam! you hit the nail on the head... I have a *VERY* difficult time as a parent with a child with a learning disability to watch the movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence (that I know you worked on - amazing movie), because of the man's inhumanity to other sentient beings, ostensibly the little boy David, and the other robots.
I rewatched it a few weeks ago after you were speaking about the office sets that you'd made in the film, and I was once again haunted for days by the themes presented in the movie...
I seem to remember reading in the Cinefex issue on "Attack of the Clones" that ILM experimented with filming the production models on digital video and that this required different painting and detailing techniques. It would be great to learn about that and whether it was carried over to "Revenge of the Sith" or that show's miniatures were done on film.
I had that same issue way back when! They were talking about how traditional weathering techniques that relied a lot more on pigment than texture started looking flat, and they had to do a lot more "real" distressing that involved doing more actual damage to the models.

Love death and robots is nothing like animatrix and animatrix is nothing like love death and robots. Only remotely and noticeable similarity is that both are a bunch of short stories

I read a few blogs, back in the day, about 3D animation for film and tv. One guy said essentially CG artists had no idea how to "Dirty up" their work. Everything was always pristine, perfect angles, perfect circles, perfectly consistent textures. If there was some dirt is was a completely separate and distinct layer that was the ideal perfect dirt. And even with things like fog, they were consistent and uniform with identical lighting, unlike real fog which would have different densities when stirred. A physical model can have imperfections found in real material, can have dust sprinkled on to land naturally in imperfect layers. Couple this with lighting and no real way to make true mat colours and everything has some kind of gloss or shine that certain real material on a physical model would never have.
In short, early CG always looked clean, perfect, and shiny and anything that wasn't supposed to be clean, perfect and shiny stood out.
As someone who is fascinated by the technical details, I enjoyed Jon Favreau talking about the history and development of The Volume on The Mandalorian specials on Disney+.
The recollection of fonts in the 90s reminds me of teaching presentations and video editing when I worked in an apple store. "Here are all the cool transitions and effects that you can use and if you want to look like a pro you need to use none of them"

That bank commercial had to be the First Union campaign ILMCP did directed by Steve Beck. I remember that underwater spot with the sharks. Memorable commercial campaign and great work.
For those of you who want to see some of the work he did on it, the shark spot is out on the You Tubes.
This is how you make it in the creative world. You problem solve. I read the article in Wired about ILM. I've been up there for a shoot. So COOL!
That's why I think 3d printing is probably going to make a revolution in movie making. Because it brings together the CGI and the physical modelers... After all, you need to sand the models, paint them and so on.

@George Harry Incorrect. If you listen to the Still Untitled podcast, he seems to like all 3 films quite a lot. Not just in a "I don't want to offend my friends" way, but seems really genuine and has insightful comments about each film.
I went to school for commercial graphics when things were done with pen,pencil,airbrush and paper. My last semester, they told us that 75% of what we just learned was obsolete, and we would have to add a little more than a year for computer graphics.... On an IBM PC-AT2....Our cellphones have tons of computing power than those old PCs.
Kickback while cutting Styrofoam with a table saw is amazing, and scary as hell. Stuff just explodes and sounds like a shotgun going off.

Adam, you meant the episode Beyond from the Animatrix, one of my favourites as well. The music in it is incredible! They sorta "ripped off" this idea at the beginning of Thor: the Dark World with that rift on earth

Can't believe you didn't mention Bicentennial Man re the droids issue. You worked on the film! Asimov explores that issue throughout his stories, and how the form isn't important its the mind that counts. (i also cryed my eyes out at the end of that movie)

I've no idea if comments get checked a month out or whatever but I'm commenting anyways.
I appreciated your words regarding the Sequels as you touched on the real Core of the problem. The problem that has so many fans divided and making a beloved franchise into such a Sensitive topic.
Knowledge and Education Helps when learning of the Behind the scenes information...but to a degree these points are symptomatic really.
Fans get lost amongst those symptoms like getting lost in a maze without a map.
Your opening statement about Readily Available Lore being engrained for episodes 4,5 and 6, even 1, 2 and 3, but Nowhere Near so for the sequels.
They didn't Stick in the mind. Not because of Age, Not because of Bias for the originals and Not because of being Gatekeepers for the past.
The stories Don't Stick for Me Either bub and for me it was because of Storytelling Quality.
When even Basic storytelling rules for a Trilogy aren't Followed, then Chaos ensues.
When the method is throw everything at the wall to see what sticks is the rule of the day, then theres no....Construction going on.
No actual character building.
I regard Daisy's performance as you do...as in she did the Best she Could with the material she was given. She did that for all three films. She Did her Part and gave it her all.
It's not her fault that the material was sub par.
Institutional Knowledge...that's been missing in many big productions over the last several years as well. Stories being hyped up SPFX shows, awesome trailers then the movie comes out and it's so Shallow that we realize we've Seen all there is to see Story wise from the trailers.
Institutional Knowledge and SKILLS and especially TALENT in regards to Planning and Storytelling were Absent from this entire project. With no overall guiding vision, boundaries in which each director would have the Freedom to Move Around in...were Not Set Up or followed.
The end result is that it takes Real EFFORT to recall things from those 3 films specifically Because the Quality of STORY Didn't INVEST us in the Story and Failed to develop or properly capitalize upon the Potential of All the Components they Had at their disposal.
These were SPFX shows at best. And all of That Work for Me IS Star Wars. Even if the rest of the story was utter destructive garbage..the ARTISTRY was indeed Star Wars.
Out of All of the films in the series it was TECHNICALLY Superb.
The visual blending of practical and CGI was Beautiful to me. There the lessons learned from the failures and developing technologies used in the last had Finally Matured for me. The Technical artists have seemed, to me at least, Finally Found the balance of all their Uses. Nothing was over used while some designs were somewhat subdued in their variety of alien races..everything kinda looked the same and not the wider variety of shapes and wild designs from before.
There were financial reasons For this, like any Lucas Era Aliens came with a Royalties fee for George, so Few Ackbars, No Hammerheads, No Snaggletooths...its also why we Barely see Threepio or R2. When we do see Threepio hes got a red arm...enough of an Alteration to Avoid that pesky royalty fee.
Disney execs set up enough BS rules that would lead to further Hamstringing themselves with the fans.
It became really not just about what Was there as opposed to What Wasn't there. And what Wasn't there were the Basic ingredients Necessary to make what they had Successful.
The Mandalorian under proper Creative Guidance with Favreau and Filoni will do it's part to Repair some of the damage done. But the Mandalorian absolutely Cannot Do It ALONE.
Disney and Lucasfilm dont Have to Scramble now to find their way back, they have to Dedicate themselves to Letting Natural Creativity and Story Development to EARN Its Way with the Fans.
The Sequels were revealed as a blatant and Arrogant Cash Grab that depended solely upon the Visuals and Nostalgia to just Assumedly Rake in the bucks....when Story was integral to that goal, they failed.
It's sad.
The Virus only making things worse and revealing the weakness of Corporate Culture and its negative effects on everything it touches.
Theres philosophical reasons that go further as to the massive failure here....but that in a Broken walnut all over your desk type of way is the problem in a nutshell.
Its Doesn't Stick because theres No Sticky Goodness.
Visually a Treat..but devoid of Substance. Our imaginations weren't given the Food for Thought like Everything else Star Wars Pre Disney has...save for finishing the Clone Wars finally And Rebels and the Mandalorian.
Anyways bub. I hope you get a chance to read this. If not that ok. Perhaps someone who doesn't understand what what will and might go explore for themselves from there.

Theres a lot of coverage especially on CZcams about the rift between fans and the whys etc. Theres a Lot of bullshit out there to. A lot of people Without any sense of..Institutional Knowledge for Journalism let alone moviemaking who are defending Bad Ideas over arguing for Better Mechanics of Creation and the Herat and Soul of a Thing to be Guarded and Protected while still Exploring story potentials Within That Setting and its Themes.
All Kinds of New Stories can be told In the Setting of Star Wars....but the Title Denotes the Theme to Follow.
Its about the Stories of People Caught up in Galactic Scale Conflicts.
Thise details Lead the Entire Show and Theme s therein. When a setting and story base themes are Hijacked and Mouted for Agendas, then Nothing Works past that...Nothing STICKS...and therefore merch doesn't Sell and Profits Dwindle.
My biggest complaint about the Titanic level failure of the sequels was Every Lost Opportunity, like the OG team Inside the Millennium Falcon together...One Last time.
That was Literally the One Shot EVERY fan New and Old had in their mind that Wouldve alived up to the LEGEND of the franchise.
And now a bunch are Dead in Story and in real Life and That Chance has been Lost Forever...like Tears..in the Rain.
But my Biggest Gripe about this...is I'm NOT just talking Star Wars man!! I'm NOT exploring Story or Future Potential off of those movies...instead as a Fan I'm Dissecting the Corpse trying to understand What Went so Very Very Wrong.
Now I understand it because I went looking. I had to sidt through a lot of bullshit and distracting arguments to find the MECHANICS of what happened.
When you can Get Past all the "-isms" and name calling and Agenda based Ideologies which are BS garbage....you get Too the Mechanisms Behind the choices made for the final product.
And you find that those responsible for the decisions and their reasons Why...you See where Quality is Sacrificed for Quantity instead.
That a $4 Billion dollar purchase had No Thought other than rolling drunkenly naked in future dreamed Profits, put towards its future development Creative wose. How to Earn the Fans because one of their Most beloved franchises Ever in History...was under New Management.
I Hated this but had to find out for myself wtf happened.
I dont blame the Actors at all. They did their best with what they got to work with...the rest has far too many people to share the blame.
But anyways. ..I've gone on long enough.
What CGI misses over model making is the random human element. The way something together via your hands introduces to things you would never think of using a mouse and keyboard. The way things fit together, the weight of it even the texture.

One reason Jurassic Park looks so good is because the some of the best people at ILM, a lot of whom worked on the OT, switched over to the computer and (like Adam said) brought that knowledge and genius to the digital realm.

Adam, with you 100% on the Animatrix. The short you mention with the kids finding the glitch in the Matrix ("Beyond") is one of the most melancholy things I've ever seen. In stark contrast, the two-parter ("The Second Rennaisance") is one of the most terrifying. If anyone reading this has not seen this anthology, you're missing out. P.S. youtube versions don't do it justice. Find the original.

the whole sentient android thing is why I cant watch A.I. I watched it once and it hit me so hard I can't watch it again. the thoughts it provokes shakes me.
carbonitedreamer West world was difficult for me watch for the same reason. Humans treat other human pretty poorly, so we are hardly responsible enough to responsibly treat AI properly, or the planet, other life forms on that planet, maybe if were around in ten million years or so, maybe then?

Yes, they might get treates with respect, but i bet some are not. On top of that you dedicate your life to that specific family, up to the point of having no life on your own.
It needs a special breed of human to do and love that job.
@@antraxxslingshots This is true to some extent, but the big difference is that they can, if they choose to, just walk away. Another interesting example is the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica. In the original series they were just silver robots that wanted to wipe out humanity for no adequately-explained reason. In the remake they were given a backstory - created to be cannon fodder in various wars and effectively slave labour - which I think gives them every right to rise up, take their freedom, and ensure that humans will never be able to oppress them again.
@@Michael75579 Yes, the "walk away" part is obviously true. Yet you know in todays society how hard it is to "throw" a job away...let alone such a special one where you need good reputations to finy a new family.
Remember in the earlier days of website design, when we had to say to each other, just because a nifty trick or effect exists, does not mean you actually have to USE it on your site, especially when combined with a couple dozen other nifty tricks and effects.... Remember some of those "make your eyeballs bleed" websites from back in the day?

A kinda sneaky fictional take on the sentient issue is Sir Terry Pratchett's Feet of Clay which unfortunately hasn't been done in film/tv but the book is wonderful the audiobook doubly so.
@10:45 At least in the old EU it was explained that droids didn't have personalities or sentience out of the box. It was a trait that developed over time if their memories weren't wiped on a regular basis. A droid with personality was often thought of as a defect or glitch. Hence why the deck crew asked Luke if he wanted a replacement for R2D2. Also why R2 and C3po often didn't get along with other droids. Those droids weren't sentient.
Adam look at the TV shows of the mid-60's when color was new. The vivid explosions od color were overwhelming until they calmed down.
Is that why Star Trek had all the gaudy colors? like the orange doors, etc? They wanted to add color, but needed to cater for the b&w viewers.

One problem I noticed with early CGI was the over-acting. Every time a CGI character was added to a scene the animator felt the need to make their character stand out by having it grunt and shuffle (dewbacks) or slapstick comedy (robots at mos eisley), which took focus away from the scene and movie as a whole.
Adam, with that second-to-last question, talking about humans and androids... if you've not played the wonderful emotion-coaster game Detroit: Become Human, I'd strongly recommend doing so. It's about you, as a human, taking control of several fully-fleshed-out (no pun intended) android characters as they get put through very real situations humans create which cause conflicts of interest for the androids, and how they (but really you AS them) choose to deal with those situations. The game is designed so that there are many different pathways through each scene, and ultimately through the entire game, all based on your decisions. It is an emotional masterpiece and will almost certainly make you cry at least once, because it puts you through some extremely stressful decisions and your human nature vs for example, the laws set out for androids in this fictional (though very realistic and believable) future, will conflict and make you have to think very seriously about what to do (though sometimes there are decisions you have to make very quickly, making you feel the pressure the androids are faced with).

I do know that they are using VR in set design to be able to look through sets after being drawn up and then digitally built, whether it be a set they are going to build or one they are going to make CGI.
Coincidentally a clip of animatrix was on my ig feed from cartoonfanboy 2 hours before watching this, i think the universe is telling me that i need to watch it
