  • In this excerpt from our Nov. 9 livestream, Adam answers two questions: "MythBusters sparked a new generation to begin making and tinkering. What will the next maker movement thrive most from?" and "Who are some of the unsung heroes/heroines behind the scenes that helped make MythBusters into what it became?" I don't have a question, but since it was mentioned at the tail of this clip, I would love a tool tip/cave tour to learn about the compressed air set up in the cave. (I know it's a bit niche, but I used to work for a compressor company, so I'm curious)

No mention of Jessi Combs? I became a huge fan of hers for the things she did after being on the show. And her loss really hit me hard. For those shaking their heads at so many Aussies on the crew, it was because the show was made by Beyond Productions, a truly incredible company from Australia. Beyond created their flagship show Beyond 2000 in the 80s and revolutionized how everybody covered tech stories. They also produced stunning documentaries like Inside The Space Shuttle, which will never be seen again because who cares about obsolete space ships on a show shot in SD? And then MythBusters. The crew coming from Beyond were and are some of the most talented people in TV anywhere in the world. They invented so many things we now take for granted as part of TV production. You could not have found better people to make MythBusters, paired with the incredible cast.

Mythbusters taught me so much about how to approach a subject one loves to work with, Adam taught me to love your work and show it, Jamie taught me to still be mindful about the dangers of ones work, Tori taught me that it's okay to goof around in good company while working, Grant taught me that it's okay to "geek out" when your work pays of or when you work on the part of your profession that interests you the most, Kari taught me to appreciate the good company of others that love the same stuff that you do and finally Scotty taught me that often times you need to do stuff my way and a personal touch can make something extra special.
And all of this is something I've noticed while finding my own calling, medicine. I'll patch you when you DONT listen to Jamie!

Mythbusters was one of the first shows that showed me it's OK to fail. OK to change views based on results and findings. OK to acknowledge mistakes and differences.
To me, that is the part that made me afraid of making. As I was taught that failure is bad, and didn't know I learned best from failure, I never got around to starting something I was afraid to fail at. Because in higher education in the Netherlands shop classes aren't provided I hardly ever made something.
Wouldn't call myself a maker, but I have had some small art projects and building projects the last years that make me feel good, learn and also appreciate the flaws in my work. When I have the space and the budget to do bigger projects and try more I definately will. If I fail, I learn. Thanks for that lesson

We had a wood shop, a metal shop, a computer aided design lab (also used for architecture), an electronics lab (that expanded to have a simulated house (a few stud walls and a tiny window and door for the alarm system section, the class next door LOVED that one since we seemed to have the cheapest and LOUDEST siren hooked up to that.) There was also a jewelry lab as well, but it was more of an elective, so I just did more CAD lab.

About 3D printing phone cases, for any wanting entrepreneurs out there, Adafruit has some 3D models and information for phone cases they've actually printed, and they look pretty slick. Having just purchased a new phone myself, I'm tempted to get a 3D printer to do just that with my own device!

In all those years of mythbusting and doing very dangerous stuff with explosives and various things that might have caused harm to people, regardless of the amount of precaution taken in preparing and executing those things, did you ever feel like you were about to do something that could've ended badly or wasn't safe?

Failure is the greatest learning tool.....I think I would had been great if I failed more, I didn’t fear failure as much. Growing up, failure means it cost resources....growing up poor, costing resources without a return became a great sin....so, I wish I had the luxury of failing without guilt as a kid.

"Bulk" and "quality" still aren't in the same sentence. Maybe it will happen in my lifetime, but I doubt it -- it's a human failing ("greed") that makes "bulk" equate to "fast and cheap". As advanced as our computing and robotics are today, there are still many things they can't do. Some things still require a level of dexterity and adaptability that machines can't do. (eg. installing the dash assembly in a car, putting the assembled circuitry of a server PSU into the barely large enough case) And it still takes humans to program and oversee all the robots. (how many times have you have a tool snap in the mill/lathe?)
Note: My college senior design project (NCSU Textile Engineering '95) was making a system to test and measure bearing wear. Even with 2 decades of advances, that's still a tough nut to crack. We still do it by basically listening; we can tell when a bearing is bad, but not _when_ it's going to go.

With all these production methods becoming easier and cheaper we're almost at the point where the means of production is no longer in the hands of the few at the top. Normal everyday people can buy lathes, drill presses, 3d printers, a hundred other tools and all the materials that used on them in a matter of months or years where once it might have taken decades and even out of reach for some in a lifetime. I mean sure we're not at the point of Star Trek style replicators in every house and room but we are marching steadily towards it at a reasonable pace.

Thank you for the answer Adam. Let me just say that sloely crediting MythBusters for the maker movement was a perfect example of my mis-speaking. But I digress. Despite the condition of the world at the moment, we should (all of us makers) be thrilled to live in this time of incredible innovation. The fact that so much is now available to the everyday maker is nothing less than awesome opportunity!

I entered the industrial electrical field so I have a guarantee that I'll have a job because all I do is wire up robots in production lines.. I install conduit, pull wire, land and terminate wire and check for rotation to make sure it is working properly.. robots are so fun to work on and service and just because a factory has a robot doesn't mean people won't have a job.. robots aren't the end all be all and they make mistakes too.. that is where people come in and fix them..
