- What does Adam think about practical vs. digital effects? Is there an ILM prop he worked on that never made it into the final film? Did Adam ever get bored while at ILM? In this excerpt from our Dec. 22 live stream, Adam answers questions from Tested Patrons Grayson Duskwalker, Joe Niedbala and TheOnlineAnimator, whom we thank for their support! I am going to gravely miss all of these Q&A, tool tips, one day builds, etc. when things ho back to normal.. Not to speak negatively on the Tested crew in any way, but these videos have brought a new life to Tested. They give such a great insight to how Adam works, thinks about projects, thinks about old work and remember anecdotes that might not even have been mentioned before. The fact that it is barebones with only one phone camera and few angles and not as cinematic as pre-Cov Tested often was is just a bonus IMO. It makes Adam, his workshop and his projects seem more down to earth and relatable or approachable, which in turn is even more motivating to make things myself.
The questions from the Patreons have been so great and fresh compared yo all the typical questions Adam has gotten and answered hundreds, if not thousands of times. It looks like he is thoroughly enjoying them as well.
These videos will probably end as the pandemic ends, and I will miss them. I hope we at least get videos with the same simplistic but excellent vibe when the crew joins him in his shop again. I had almost stopped watching Tested pre-Cov, but now it is a clear tie in my favourite channels.
P.S. I still think a book of all of these Q&As + Qs from his family and friends + anecdotes to give longer and deeper answers would be a great idea and become a top seller.
...I just wish this plead reached him and Tested. I really think it would be a fantastic idea.
100%. Around July or so there were a couple done with the old 'arty' style and the difference was stark. In an entirely negative way. The single cam, self shot setup is infinitely better for demonstrating the process and giving us comfy hours or so.
I completely agree, I watched Tested pre-covid but not as religiously as I do now. I especially love Adams one day builds because it showed me as a 19 y/o maker that not everything goes to plan and the rhythm of creating is continuously solving problems using the tools at your disposal. At the least I’m hoping for the occasional simple Sunday one day builds or something of that nature.
Well how do you feel now? They haven't ended it seems!
Anyone who asks this question should go watch the destruction of Isengard in “The Two Towers “. The dam and the water are practical miniatures and actual water is filmed, but the orcs and the ents are digital. The combination are so much better than either could ever be by itself. It is my favorite special effects sequence in all of film.
You have got to love that Adam's hands are almost always stained, painted, and/or bandaged. Today, at least two out of three.
Two out of three of his hands?
I know what you meant lol.
I love the quote "CG looks real but feels fake; Stop Motion looks fake but feels real"
Seeing how passionate you are about your work always makes me feel better 😀
Hey another Aussie love your CZcams channel
The shine in his eyes everytime he talks about his job really makes me happy
District 9 was honest to goodness the first time that entirely CG creations completely fooled. I was blown away to learn that there wasn't a single alien used on camera! It still boggles my mind. They look so, so good. But I super appreciate the practical stuff too, and feel that 99% of the time, it just feels more real (because it is), even if it can't move as much.
The original short “Alive in Joberg” that was expanded into “District 9” was also very impressive considering it’s budget.
Agreed. And that they haven't done a sequel is a crime.
@@custos3249 personally, i think its for the best. let the legend live where it is, expanding it would most probably just cause it to crash facefirst into unreal expectations.
Adam's smile is so infectious it turns my day around.
He's got a beautiful spirit hey, loves unconditionally without naivety, reflects through his expressions
I'd love to see a Tested tour of ILM to see some of the relics Adam contributed to (eg. the carousel).
I love that you guys got the hint and now Adam is in %90 of the videos. I watch Tested on a much more regular basis now as a result
That hand motion that everyone does at interviews is called “spinning a potter’s wheel” in my language because it looks like the person is turning a small clay pot. Look how large the pot would be for his motion!
Interesting cultural reference thank you
"I can't draw that well"
Adam, selling posters he drew of his toolbox and other sundry items. ;)
And he admonished 'I'm not a maker' statements.
I work in Digital FX and I totally agree, the best way is to combine the two, it's just more convincing. All digital always looks fake.
When Adam says about becoming an Effects Director, I couldn’t see it myself. Not because he couldn’t do it but because he’s like Capt. Kirk in that he’d want to be out there doing rather than instructing :D
I think they could make an entire Star Wars film with practical effects for free with volunteers from the maker’s community.
Practical effects have something special, they look more real but they also tell the story of the effort behind making them
My dad hated his job to the point that he said to find something I love and don’t worry about the money. Decades later, if I had children, I’d tell them to do something they love and strive to do it so well that someone will pay you good money to do do it.
I love hearing these kind of stories and how energetic Adam tells them.
CGI maybe be cheaper, but when it comes to actors on set having to interact with the world, having a thing in your hand or being able to see the thing over there can be huge in helping create a realistic portrayal. CGI may be the future but I feel there will always be a place for practical effects, realistic sets, and physical props.
There is this myth today that there is some work that is simply a joy all day every day. The truth is all work has some elements of... well... work. You can consider yourself very lucky if you manage to find a job that gives you even 50% things you genuinely enjoy. You can of course work your way in the direction you want to go and you can actively influence where you end up in life, but expecting a job where everything is just perfect will just get you disappointed.
Now that I'm done being a bore, thanks for being an inspiration in all walks of life Adam :)
The genie is out of the box and there’s another arrow in the quiver of film makers. They all have a place.
Hey Adam! I have wanted to know how you decide which parts of a project can be 'half assed' versus which parts of a project need your care and undivided attention and are worth looking for the 'perfect' solution? I find I get fewer things done because I am always looking for the ultimate solution.
That would be really interesting to know how he goes about things and would gladly listen to him talk all day. Seeing as these formats of videos whether long or short have grown on me as well.
Just as an example. I'm no expert and am only getting the hang of things, but for me with Gunpla (I know, some really despise them), the "half-assed" and "perfect" thing really gets to my mind with how I'd ideally want it to be in actuality. Sometimes I get thoughts of: Do I cement this-and-that together and just mask paint them? Or do I just paint them separated? How do I/Should I go about modifying the already existing engineering of the kit's movements?
The amount of content this channel puts out is crazy
Practical effects are awe-inspiring. Like, digital effects can take a lot of work and be amazing and stunning and all... but some of the things that have been created with human hands using physical things are just like... _holy crap_ amazing
Always been an entertaining man to watch!
Mandalorian’s special effects are what makes the show especially stand out. An example of when the special effects were at their peaks were when Boba Fette was smashing the storm troopers faces, and their helmets were completely destroyed and battered.
I absolutely appreciated that subtle touch. Seeing shards of helmet come from each blow was something I really enjoyed seeing. It made it all the more real.
@@lucas010888 I wish the movies had more realistic moments as well. Imagine the actual damage of a lightsaber, and how incredibly thrilling it would make laser battles.
Could Adam do a mini series where he covers each section in his cave where he shows us some of his interesting tools and the uses of the design type
*that would be very cool...especially what project/need prompted the acquisition of the major components of that particular section*
That would be interesting.
I think the Mandalorian speaks to this in that even the actors mentioned that with the use of the video walls, that they had something to interact with and the reflections and lighting were of the surrounding "set" and did not have to be added later.
whoa, Sky Captain got a shout out! I've always loved that movie's aesthetic
Yes! That carousel you sowed in the "Battle of the Sexes Round 2" Episode in MythBusters Season 12 I believe. You and Jamie went to ILM to use their motion capture studio to test Throwing Like a Girl. Spectacular looking thing that carousel... just stunning.
Jajajaja... Great Guillermo del Toro impression!
As a viewer of movies and the special effects they contain, there have been several occasions where I have felt absolutely gutted to find out that a piece of the scenery was actually 100% CGI and not a practical effect.
The most recent example that I can think of, would be the clock in the entrance of MACUSA in Fantastic Beasts. It was just fascinating in its appearance, that I was disappointed to find out that it didn't actually exist somewhere.
Great,great career advice!!! 🍻
Monotony is a large part of all creative process. What you do to get from a to b is is always a difficult path but it is what you must endure to arrive at the work that you believe in and stand behind.
Sad to hear that The Adam Savage Project podcast is ending after 8 years 😞
i LOVE practical effects, i defend them constantly when debating with people. i also am in that age range "48" where i grew up with practical effects. but we are all middle age and older now, whats going to happen in another decade or two. when the people that grew up with digital effects are in charge.
Wow. Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow. Haven't heard that name in awhile. Yeah I loved that film, especially how the actors viewed it as just the green screen version of theater.
Coming from a VFX guy who also has done prop making (that's how I fell into TV, making bespoke electronic mentalism effects for Live TV), I can honestly say that not everything will become digital as it isn't (pun intended) practical in certain cases. Environment, and set extensions will be the norm. But even then we want a piece of the real thing because it gives us VFX people the perfect example what the textures need to be, how to setup the lighting. Interaction with props, is tedious (lot's of tracking and rotoscoping) so where there can be practical we want that.
In fact I was working on an indie where the script called for a kid to come out of the sea and be covered in leeched (reference to Stand By Me, there's lots of horror references in there -- like 24 trucks...also all real). And the director himself a skilled SFX make up artist called for CG.
I was like, don't do this in CG, it will be too expensive. The kid is wet, so there's glinting all over, throwing of tracking. A 15 year old has not too many irregularities on his body to track so we need to put dozens of tracking markers, that we also need to paint out. This shot gonna be horrendously expensive. Why not do this practical? Now the director, has never worked with silicone so he wasn't aware of very soft rubbers (beyond condoms, I am sure). He was afraid that practical would look very inanimate and dead. I said that Sunny, is a muscular kid, if we make leeches from a shore 10 rubber and we stik the strategically on different adjacent muscle groups he walks and breaths and flexes his muscles, the leeches will seem to move.
And for this medium shot, they will look real, for that close up hero shot we use CG.
So he and the producer asked if I could make a few and send them to the US to test. I got right on it, and we used them on that medium and wide shot to perfect effect. And a few of them I out magnets in the head or tail and stuck the opposite side to the talent. and a magnet was put under a piece of silicone skin, and those magnets were point at the same pole, so as soon as the got close they would repel, making it look like the head or tails was moving.

I believe nothing looks better then practical effects, because it's actually there. However, digital effects look great when used to enhanced the practical, or to modify the scene or things that aren't possible with practical effects.
You can DRAW dude.
I'm considering buying one of your prints for my new shop.
Interested to see photos of the unused AI carousel!
One, I love your channel. It's entertaining and educational at the same time. Also, another benefit to physical props is that you can interact with physical objects more easily because they're actually there. Finally, I remember that carousel from one of the "Mythbusters" episode! (I think it was the gender myths episode with the CGI to test throw like a girl)
Nice career searching advice.
Digital makes impractical practical practical.
The software exists to shoot in-front of a huge screen with I believe it's Unity 3D. You could reach out to the youtube channel @node or @corridor digital and they will be able to run you through it in high detail.
Practical effects tend to age a lot better than cgi.
awesome
Practical effects have a certain tangibility on screen that CGI will never have.
As long as there are filmmakers who want practical effects, there will be practical effects.
Hello, Nice helmets..I like effect rfom The Thing (1982), terrible horror for me at that time, in that age =D btw
If you want a job where you do something different every day, get into building maintenance. You would be amazed at how many creative ways people destroy things that don't belong to them.
Can you or have you talked about the mandeloran helmet in the background?
I have a theory that it’s gonna be a prop build video. Hopefully
Just watched honey I shrunk the kids for the first time in 20 years. I forgot how it used to be so practical and how awesome that movie is.
ADAM, as a fan of legos and seeing you build the UCS Millenium Falcon, are you guys all gonna get this year's rumored "UCS LEGO DEATH STAR" and all of you try to build that?? It's gonna be THE NEWEST & BIGGEST amount of legos in a set, more than the M. Falcon!
Adam....if everything else magically goes away. Become a Guillermo del Toro impersonator please!
Look at raiders of the lost ark green screen does not capture the atmosphere of the sets in that.
What's your thoughts on modern horror stories, are they better than the ones from yesteryear or worse
Adam could you show that Carousel you made on your next answering questions video.
If it is still on display i bet he could ....
@@peterkelley6344
I thought Adam took a picture of it when was there.
@@greg9403 Yeah that's what I suppose you meant by the comment. Honestly I love the straight filming of just Adam talking about all this, but a few pictures/visuals as to what he is ranting about wouldn't hurt. Considering that these vids are what seem to be cut-up chunks of a bigger live-stream, iirc
@@redactedz6146
You are probably right. Adam is a funny guy with a lots of skills.
Digitally practical or practically digital?
2:40 Maybe Valve could tweak the VR software to match the TV image to a Vive/Index puck mounted to the camera? [EDIT] Maybe the Unreal engine already has the option?
The unreal engine filming setup used in the mandalorian uses vr tech to track the camera properly so that the screens update the image with correct perspective, they also are able to edit the scenery using vr headsets and other stuff, the unreal CZcams channel has videos about this!
Hi anyone have a link to pic of Adams merry go round prop please.
I have always advised people to figure out what you love to do, and then find someone to pay you to do it. It worked for me.
"The Volume" will change how films are made forever. (Well until they are made fully in VR) It's just so much better than green screens for various reasons.
laika is another film company that is all props. Saw the show in Portland one year...
The environment might be ok as CGI but I want the creatures to be practical, please.
My 12yo Daughter and I really miss seeing you on both MYTHBUSTERS and MYTHBUSTERS JR!
She want to know if you "MAY" have a Re-Boot for our Younger Generation "In-Works"...
Twelve monkeys is my favorite movie for real sets so dirty an cool..
Here’s the thing. Would baby Yoda be the phenomenon that he is if he was 100% CG. I don’t think so. The best special effects are the ones that you don’t think about. In my opinion the best directors, like Stephen Spielberg, have mastered blending practical effects and CG. Using the strengths of each and using them to balance out the weaknesses of the other.
That Hispanic accent was amazing by the way.
9:70 ........ Whilst I'm looking at other job openings......
Pictures but why cant we see them!!!!! I want to see the carousel !!!
I think we may see 100% animated films at some point reasonably soon (I know we already have animated and cartoon, but I mean animated but looking "real")
the Pacific Rim punch (at least the one I think he means) and how they did it.
czcams.com/video/yHarrJ_1i8E/video.html
also, I'm fairly sure I remember seeing the carousel at the letterman complex in 2007 when I used to deliver there as a bike messenger (I could be wrong, I remember a lot of cool things there and that was a while ago)
...and Christopher Nolan! He is Mister in-camera and practical effects god!
Hollywood has pushed for all digital. And it's awful. There's a time and place for both.
Additionally, they aren't exactly mutually exclusive. They can help each other to reach even better effects.
I thinkit will settle with an mix, actors just do not really move right if they pretend to open an imaginary door, or act in an cockpit that is not there.
With computers getting better at placing special effects the real expensive things can happen in computer, but i doubt building props will go away, they become just more seperated into "user face" and "cgi face"
I like the Mandalorian quite a lot. However, I just started season 2 and can't shake off being a little bored with the "Mando goes somewhere, needs something, has to do something in return" rinse and repeat. I also think these side missions, while nice, lack a bit in story depth. Anyone who can shake this feeling off of me? :)
This is in no way a dig; but I honestly think this is the first time Adam forgot the name of someone. His Rolodex Encyclopedic memory of people and their names always impresses me.
CGI looks like an obvious cartoon to me. Still amazed by the raves it gets. Give me even a cheesy Ray Harryhausen effect any day.
Film studios want to make films for cheaper, yet production cost have balloon with the heavy use of CGI effects.
It's frustrating as a cg artist, good cg doesn't get praised, but good practical effects do. Then there's also the expectation vs the reality how something looks. Explosions and fire look fake in real life too when you film them as a subject, the problem is that when you do it as a practical effect you overexpose the firesource so you don't see the detail. Detail that is possible to see with CG. I suggest watching the Slowmo guys fire tornade video to see how real fire looks bad cg... I'll never be a fan of full CG movies, because it impacts the ability of the actors, but CG needs a fair shot by film purists.
Sony just showed off their version of the volume... so it’s basically the future of filming... but still not the Holodeck from the Enterprise.
There was way to much green screen in the hobbit films. The costumed actors made films like the lord of the rings great.
That and the goofy 48fps
I'm confused, if the prop is already built then they've already paid for it, so how does not putting it in the movie save money? Was it a panning shot that they shortened?
i think it had to do with the seaweeds being messy to add in to the carousel which is why it got cut
lots of stuff gets cut out of films for the sake of bettering it and maybr the found that the carousel didnt fit in well with the whole scenery
Short answer: Rendering seaweed onto the objects costs a lot of money so they had to cut down how many objects there were to weed-ify.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow...thanks a lot for reminding me. I bought an actual ticket for that piece of crap...
I thought I was the only one to know that film! That piece of 'crap' was not half bad! 'Bout time for me to watch it again. It's my bedroom somewhere; probably under 'S' for "Sky" ....
Adam, VFX are often more expensive!
For Moon, the CG trucks and base would have cost 500k and the Scottish model shop did it all for 50K and so much faster too!
It is during production, where practical becomes a bit more expensive, as shit never works when it is supposed to or doesn't exactly move as the director wants. And we reduced productions from 6-9 months to 2-5 months (stupidly short!), so there's no time to get it right in camera anymore. Producers want to see at least 12 shots during a daily now.
But the post production has gone up immensely, but those costs are less visible. A VFX shot has a small team of 5-10 people working on it but often from 3 or 4 different studios but producers don't seem to see that cumulative price very well. Whereas a practical set where he has to sign the paychecks of a 100-130 people playing with their dicks most of the time, when the SFX team is setting up and prepping, he sees.
And it's simple management, look at the cost that have skyrocketed in film making. There's no films in Hollywood being made anymore under 30 million dollars. That is considered small budget! Most films are around 75-100 million now, and post is the biggest contributor of this cost.
There's areas where VFX is cheaper and that's mainly where we had large scale miniatures in the past and environments. But makeup FX digitally, first look terrible quickly and take a long time to do. Face tracking, proxy geometry alignment, camera tracking, rotoscoping (in most cases). That really adds up quickly. I've done this very quick shot for a course on object tracking Blender in 2 hours (object being my hand) this has a mere slap composite and a very simple real time 3D render of a nail and not even an HDRi it's just matched digital lighting done quickly.
That quick demo took already 2 hours! And I've done lots of object tracking so I am skilled at it and it's time consuming to get everything sticking properly. To just have a nail in the hand. I would do that with VFX makeup in 20 minutes.

@@greggh.748 What ARE you talking about? It's a group dedicated to policing equity, not a specific person, so I'm very confused by your comment.
It sometimes feels to me that the stories are now secondary to the digital effects which is why there are so many billion dollar movies that are actually really bad movies. The wow and mystique and the 'how on on earth did they do that' factors that movies like the original Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Alien movies etc... had no longer exists, which is such a shame!

Sorry but if technology advances enough to a point where you can wear contacts and Everything is augmented reality in a empty field which looks realistic everything will be cg
I hate cgi, in Star Wars Epidose 4 (1977) I could believe in real walking talking robots, The Transformer movies... I don't even believe in cars.
🤣This comment is **chef's kiss**
Real explosions and car chases will always look better than digital.
All green screen? Machete Kills Again in space.
How is it cheaper to cut out a prop that is already made? The hard part is already done!
The waving sea weed has to be added with CGI. CGI rendering takes massive computing capacity. In the budget of a movie you have to decide how spend the resources. The more complex the scene, the more it takes up available computer capacity.
Often it comes down to time crunch. At some point a release date is set. With only months to go hard decisions must be made: which scenes can be rendered in time, and which ones will have to be cut. Example of a movie where the CGI was not given enough resources: the movie cats. Many things looked off. Presumably the director was clueless as to what CGI can and cannot do.
What Cleon was getting at but didn't specify is that it was rendering the seaweed onto the objects (like the carousel) would be too expensive so they had to have less objects to weed-ify.

I don't understand why you always talk about these beautiful works you've done and even say "I've took some pictures of it lately" and then you don't show us anything... :( Is it because of copyright or something? Can't you show photos of your own work on youtube?
if you do like camp or something i would seriously want to go to become a novice you
problem with CGI is that it ages so bad
Pactical effects will disappear at the same time that actors get completely replaced by totally CG characters.
I watched Mysteries of the Abandoned - Greatest Icons. It showed Luke Skywalker's Home Planet in Tunisia.
