  • The short answer is yes, this LEXIVON Butane Soldering Iron is very good! I did some ridiculous things with this device and it handled my ask perfectly well. I know my beloved Weller soldering station could not do what this LEXIVON kit did in the video. But it's an apples to oranges comparison, so keep that in mind please....

    It looks like Dremel's model. I have similar from Proxxon, it's perfect; not only as soldering iron with metal tip, but also butane solder for copper. And since it has that small tube-like tip, you can solder copper and brass more precisely. I got to say before I bought it, I thought, "No way, I'm gonna need this," but ended up using it for everything from removing the heat gun glue, folding plastic parts, welding plastic... It's very versatile.

    hi it looks like a nice soldering iron and the price very reasonable. I have just got 2 Portasol pro 125 they didn’t fire up that well yesterday and i am using fresh butane

    • @Finite-Tuning

      So far, I simply cannot complain, I love this thing! I'm supposed to use some kind of super purified butane, but honestly I've never heard of such a thing until I purchased this tool and read over the manual. I'm just using plain old butane and it's still just working so far so good!
      Cheers 🍻.

      There's no such thing really, normal lighter gas leaves some kind of powdery substance behind, try just discharging the aerosol on the floor and you'll get what I mean. I doubt it has any effect as it's literally just a mini blowtorch, and they run on the exact same kind of butane

  • @gadgetfl
    @gadgetfl Před 3 lety +4

    Be very careful using the Ronsen Butane. It is not refined enough. It will work but the impurities will build up and clog the jets over time.

    He says "can you feel that", yeah i can feel the heat from here, hehehe. Very nice butane soldering pen, i love it :-) I have a similar one, but yours is nicer. Mine is mainly a small torch with attachments for soldering. For soldering large wire like you did here i would of used the torch attachment instead of the soldering tip. The little torch is perfect for large wires like that😁
    Nice gold solder holder, i never saw one like that,,is it a solder holder or was it originally used for something else.

    • @Finite-Tuning
      @Finite-Tuning  Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah so far I really like it. The torch tip would have been much easier to solder this heavy stuff, but I was curious to see just what the soldering tip alone could handle. I was going to do a side by side comparison to my Weller, but it quickly became obvious there is no comparison. I know my Weller could not handle freekin battery cable....
      The only gold thing in the video I think is a soldering iron tip cleaner: amzn.to/2XoQTOV
      Then inside of that I have some solder Wick: amzn.to/3aUkIKX
      Is that what you were referring to? Cheers bud 🍻

    Looks like Homedepot has several Butane soldering irons available for a similar price. Dremol, Bernsomatic ST500 both come with different tips. I feel like I messed up going with the Steinal ST500 that comes only with one spare tip for 40 bucks.

    • @Finite-Tuning
      @Finite-Tuning  Před 3 lety +2

      I considered several different brands and ultimately decided on this Lexivon because it has an aluminum gas tank and came with a large assortment of tips. It seemed like the best bang for the buck and I've been very happy with my decision ever since. I've used it on several projects now and I find myself just looking for excuses to pull this iron out of it's box, it has a lot of power!

    Also using the soldering tip for soldering that big of a wire is not going to cut it. You would use the exposed flame for best results. That is too large of a wire for a small soldering tip and all that copper is just sucking the heat away from the joint. And as tips go, clean and flux your tips first for best results when they are new as it helps keep the solder onto the tip. And I like your Weller station, its a good station for basic electronics.

    • @Finite-Tuning
      @Finite-Tuning  Před 3 lety +2

      Lol.... I am aware! Did you not hear me say: "this is about the dumbest thing you would ever do with a soldering iron"?
      I know it can be done more easily, but easy was not the point of my tests. Please re-watch and this time listen to and watch the "entire" video. Nothing about this testing method was about logical or easy, I did this specifically to test and prove, show and tell the worst case scenario that I could realistically think of for using this soldering iron. I could have tried 2 awg, but that's not realistic.
      Cheers 🍻

      Yep, The Lexivon can also be used as a small blowtorch and using that technique would show how easy it is to join 2 larger cables . It was a bit pointless showing how a soldering tip struggles to put enough heat into the joint.

    Are you sure it is 125W equivalent? On their website it says that the LX-771 is 125W equivalent, but I can't see anything that tells me how powerful the LX-770 is? I ask because I would like to buy the most powerful of the two.

    • @Finite-Tuning
      @Finite-Tuning  Před 4 měsíci

      Sure it can handle small stuff, no problem. But a micro USB connector? I really don't know for sure. I'd say that has more to do with the operator than the tool. I'm sure that I couldn't solder a micro USB regardless of the tool. Too small for me to even see without some serious magnification.
