OVA Metal Sonic was the first metal sonic to talk only saying the words "There is only one sonic" and died sonic heroes on the other hand,he was the best villain because he was able to talk a little while longer

Neo Metal Sonic alone is a badass looking yet underrated transformation. Sucks it never made a return in future games.
It MIGHT be possible with the Phantom Ruby, if Sega wanted to try hard enough to do it.
I think it works best as a one-off transformation, it makes its one appearance all the more special. Given Sonic Team and Sega's track record, the more they use something cool, the more chances they have to screw it up.
At least he came back in the idw comics but it wasn't metal sonic that that became neo metal sonic but it was a new neo metal sonic made by eggman to use during the war and after eggman disappeared he took over and wanted to find eggman.

I have a slight alternate theory, it was seen even in his first appearance in Sonic CD that he had silvers of free will, likely due to eggman making him so advanced, and these were just a side effect the mad doctor didn't think was negative. While he was in that pod, his mobility and such were offline, but his mind was not. Left there for years, his hate of sonic and eggman grew, and he scemed. Then shortly before sonic heroes when eggman woke him up, he instantly turned on him, locking eggman away and then upgrading himself with the copy ability and nanotech to allow him to shapeshift. Other than that my theory is identical to yours
Me: Neo Metal Sonic needs more shine. Since we kinda want him back but not nostalgic but in a more interesting way.
So their would need to be a reason for neo coming back how would we wright him coming back?

They've really dumbed down Metal Sonic over the years. Now he's just in the games as a kart racer or a cash grab like Boom and Forces. They only put him in those games because kids would think it's cool, but in the end it just shows that they don't have a purpose for him anymore and that he's become a shallow, beatable character that doesn't stand a chance against anybody. Heroes made him seem so awesome, and he was supposed to be in Sonic Next (06) as a bonus story, but was cut from the game. At this point I'd rather have sonic team forget about him in the games until they know what they're doing with him

He was just as good as, if not better than Sonic himself, Neo Metal Sonic in theory could be superior than anyone since he can copy Bio-Data, It took 3 Supers to defeat him, just like Solaris, he could've copied Eggman ' s Bio-Data and become a genius, he also has the power to shape shift into ANYTHING, SEGA is no doubt lazy now days, I fear they're running out of ideas.

I have an idea for a game where Metal Sonic returns as the main villain: The game would be called Sonic: Dimensions in which the game opens with a fight between Robotnik and Sonic kind of like the Unleashed cutscene and then Robotnik activates a machine that opens a portal and sonic accidentally runs straight into the portal, in this dimension Neo Metal won in sonic heroes and roboticized all the animals in this universe, and Sonic has to somehow save his friends from their soulless roboticized forms and bring them back and eventually fight Metal overlord and when Sonic turns into Hyper Sonic and defeats Metal Overlord, Metal Sonic reveals that he is an alternate universe sonic that got roboticized on a failed attempt to fight Robotnik
Imagine a Modern Sonic game, maybe a Adventure or Unleashed like game with The Real Metal Sonic as the main villain. His base could be the Final Fortress destroyed and abandoned and his "forces" could be all the versions of himself. Silver Sonic (S2), Mecha Sonic (S3&K), Metal Sonic 3.0 (Rivals 2), Rocket Metal Sonic (STF), even The Unnamed Sonic Robot (SADX).

I'd also like to see the giant hammer robots and gundam robots from Heroes make a return. Those things could turn into jets and fire lasers! And the hammer guys could even push Omega around in close quarters with the hammer swing.
He could even rebuild Beta, Epsilon and Gamma from SA come to think of it! I'm sure Metal would have a soft spot for Beta, they're two of the only 3 of Eggman's creations to rebel

I had thought that Metals statements of Sonic being a copy were referencing the OVA.
The metal sonic from sonic ova was awesome and I just wish he could get more love and Sega to figure out what to do to make him so much better from sonic heroes to well now he’s just a nobody now and I really thing he needs to resurface better than ever.

Honestly Neo Metal Sonic is pretty OP,if he gets the time to completly scan his ennemy,he basically wins,except he still has some flaws to this ability:
-if his ennemy has a stronger damage output than his durability than he will most likely overpower Neo.
-if his ennemy is faster than him,Neo won't have enough time to completly scan his foe,since he scanned 12 people in 3 days (Sonic Heroes),if we do the math here,than Neo needs 6 hours to completly scan someone (someone who can actually keep up or defeat him in base),so the fight needs to be as long or longer than 6 hours.
-if his ennemy has a lot of experience,than the effect of the scan will be a little less OP since the ennemy is more experienced or smarter than Neo,he can predict the moves of Metal more effectively than Metal could.
Overall I find Neo Metal Sonic to be close to Planet or Star level,and I'm not even counting into account his scan ability.
Okay so after some nerd stuff (I know it sounds completly pointless but whatever X) ),I actually really enjoyed the video,keep up the good stuff Danny,ya done gud.
If Metal Sonic is planet or star level how strong is base/super Sonic today since he's got a lot stronger since Heroes?
In base,I think star level,since he was able to beat the egg robo powered by the Phantom Ruby (Sonic Forces) who has been shown to have Star level stats.
Super form,I'd say solar system level,he has been shown to have massively better stats than in base by defeating a planet level Dark Gaia,the Egg King (whatever he's called from sonic mania) powered,again by star level Phantom Ruby,the Lizard in sonic adventure 2 and the Death eegg robot powered by the master emerald (sonic 3 & Knuckles)
Now,I know Solaris and Time Eater are considered Universal,but I think they are kind of a glass canon,they have the power to end the universe,but didn't show they could survive a universe level attack so I think it's not accurate to give them a universal durability,and even then,Sonic destroying Solaris in the present would be Galaxy level,not universal since silver and shadow helped in the future and past

I got the ''glass canon'' part from AnimationRewind,now Infinite is star level in my opinion,he has shown to be faster than sonic.....at the start of the game,that is clearly an outliar since every other time he faces sonic,he isn't faster,the best he did was spawning a star level sun,that's all,and his illusion power is just a distraction honestly,it doesn't have any impact on the real world,it's just the victim that gets those things.
The Mishievous Bowser Jr you said the scan takes 6 hours right but when any of the teams show up at the decoys he scans all of them almost instantly so how did that happen???
Neo metal sonic is cool
I think one of the reasons Metal Sonic in Heroes is so appealing to me is just how cunning he is, he plans everything from the start and his abscence is about as scary as his prescence. He has full control over the characters until the very end, and uses his powers to turn himself into one of the most powerful Sonic villains to date.
Modern Metal Sonic is as dumb as a rock, doesn't do anything new or interesting and is basically the same thing over and over again.
So is it just me or is Neo Metal Sonic quite literally the closest thing to God sonic has ever faced. He's an ever evolving creature with all the data on Sonic and his friends and rivals. He has data on Chaos who was basically a deity as well as the Bio-Lizard and Shadow both of whom are considered ultimate lifeforms. And the cherry on top is he keeps his sanity.
While the game was definitely not perfect that final battle made it all worth it. The intense and serious tone Metal had fighting all the other teams swearing to burn, skewer, and annihilate them. And then upon facing Sonic again he has an sarcastic almost pitiable personality. He talks about how Sonic's very existence tortured him and even is so delusional that he believes Sonic is the fake one. It was honestly deeper then i think the series ever got with him. At least as far as media went.
No the closest thing to god sonic has fought is Solaris, in fact an argument could be made that he was fighting god there. He was omnipresent throughout time and was destroying dimensions just by existing

Having Neo Metal Sonic be a returning character and more developed character would be cool. I also think he is cooler than Infinite. A Rival Villain to E.G.G.M.A.N. that the Doctor would have to deal with. As well as the heroes. I think this would be a good idea. Knowing Sega.. they would not do it.

While I get that Infinite was added partially if not largely for marketing, Metal/ Neo Metal Sonic would have been an excellent fit for the role Infinite fills in Sonic Forces, and would be well suited to being such in a future instalment, just with the rebellion against Eggman at the end and actually becoming the main threat again.
Seems like that'd also be a good opportunity to reintroduce Tails Doll and Mecha Knuckles
Of all the robot Sonic clones across Sonic media this one is probably the most intimidating and threatening one. He can copy bio data of his opponents, turn into liquid metallic goop which he can use to alter his form even being able to turn into Robotnik, supposedly has the powers of his normal template but up to 11 as shown in his comic appearance, has command over the Eggman Empire, is able to generate high voltage electricity, control various metallic constructs. Then you have his enhanced form which can shoot out his claws which create forcefields to trap his targets, use a fire based attack, fire spikes from his back that cause spikes to erupt from the floor upon contact, and is able to use his tail as a weapon. In his final form he gains the ability of flight, shoots out ice blasts, fires homing trap missiles, and can even pick up large objects namely pieces of the Egg Fleet and throw them at you. This guy is a beast. I might even say he's a better leader of the Robotnik Empire then even Robotnik. He is a machine. He leads machines. He masterminded everything in Heroes to the finest degree and could have taken complete control over the empire and became the primary antagonist of the series had he not been overthrown by the combined efforts of the hero teams. His goal was also pretty dark. Being an A.I. Neo Metal saw organic life forms as "oppressive" he wanted to create a world for robots by robots. He would turn the planet into a world populated by badniks and e-series machines and other assorted robots that formerly served Robotnik. He saw himself as the savior. He in a way saw himself as his own "Sonic". A hero to robot kind who wanted to usher in a paradise for all machines but at the cost of all life on the planet. He basically suffers from a clone identity crisis. He is clearly the clone of Sonic but he doesn't see himself that way. He sees himself as the real Sonic and the real living one as an impostor. An inferior life form that is a liability to his vision. In his twisted mind he is the hero. To everyone else he's the villain. A very interesting character to say the least.
for me, Neo Metal Sonic it's pure aesthetic, is a way for Metal to represent his independence and new mindset, a form to acomplish another role, that's why in the IDW comics he was using that form, he was alone, and he was the one in charge now
I think that the real motivator for his actions could be summed up as "purpose". Metal Sonic as an artificial being exists for one purpose and one alone: To defeat Sonic. This drive to fulfill his reason for existence is the reason why he was willing to throw his maker under the bus. Eggman became an obstacle that needed to be removed. His overall mannerisms clue into the idea that World Dominance is more of a bonus, or possibly be a manifestation of his creator's wishes: "To create a Robotic Empire". So in a sense Metal Sonic did not "Rebel", in the traditional sense, He is doing EXACTLY what he was created to do. He is simply taking a different road to that ends then Eggman could have imagined.
I have a theory that metal sonic hasn't actually return the real/true metal sonic is still out there maybe sonic riders for the Kinect (I forgot the games name)could have been the true metal sonic last appearance
Sad that he doesn’t have a purpose anymore... We can bring him back... but it won’t be the same. Only with a smart way can metal be good again.
I think fans should give suggestions. And the most popular ten should be voted upon for the next game. Then we get a creative team that actually cares for Sonic and they listen to us through that idea and make the game. But we don't make the story for the whole game, just main idea and suggestions so we can still be surprised.
This would become ideal Sonic games
Don't forget tho metal sonic rebelled again in sonic free riders and at the end he ran off and hasn't been seen since (sonic forces doesn't count coz infinite created illusions of metal sonic most likely because the original betrayed eggman again) so he is still out there somewhere

I think the metal sonic in heroes should make a return however instead of immediately rebelling against eggman I think he should use eggman to reach his full potential and then turn against him but he should not be as easy to defeat as the heroes one. Instead I think it could be like in sonic unleashed where sonic must run across the gaia colossus and attack dark gaia but instead it is metal sonic and in the path there are waves of enemies and there is no time limit or at least a long time limit and when you get to the end of the huge ship, whatever the ship may be, you perform and barrage of homing attacks all over metal sonic to destroy certain parts of his body. Then it does like a heroes kind of thing where he goes metal overlord and you go super sonic but you have a health bar like in unleashed and there are glowing parts on his body that you must destroy to be able to perform one massive final attack on him to finish him off

I still stand by the fact that this Metal Sonic was and still is the coolest version of Metal Sonic. I mean he's the perfect villain in heroes, he wasn't expected, and he style in the game looks SO much cooler than any of the others!! If you ask me who my favorite character from sonic is, I'd have to say Neo Metal Sonic.
So basically, Neo Metal Sonic wanted to discard his former self for power and rule with world with an infinite amount of power. Edgy and ambitious like infinite was in forces. I love it

I have an idea for a story of a Sonic game where Metal Sonic is the protagonist: After Sonic defeats Metal Sonic (again), Eggman decides Metal Sonic has outlived his usefulness and leaves him to rust in a junkyard. Eggman then creates a new robot clone of Sonic called Metal Sonic Ultra (Metal Sonic Ultra will look like the final boss in Knuckles' Chaotix except he will be the same size as Sonic) and sends him off to eliminate Sonic. Metal Sonic Ultra actually succeeds in defeating Sonic and even seemingly succeeds in killing Sonic. Unfortunately, Metal Sonic Ultra isn't satisfied with eliminating Sonic. He rebels against Eggman and sets off to kill Sonic's friends and all organic life. Meanwhile, Tails Doll, who is portrayed as having the skills and personality of Tails while also being a little bit like Omochao, obtains information from Orbot and Cubot about what happened to Metal Sonic. Being best friends with Metal Sonic, Tails Doll retrieves him from the junkyard and repairs him. Upon learning what happened, Metal Sonic, who is going to be based off of the version from the Sonic OVA, is unhappy about being replaced and sets off to destroy Metal Sonic Ultra. Along the way, he rescues Sonic's friends from dying and even rescues Sonic himself. In the cutscene leading up to the final boss battle, Metal Sonic Ultra absorbs energy from the Master Emerald and transforms into a giant monster similar to that of Metal Overlord from Sonic Heroes. He then captures Sonic and his friends along with Tails Doll, Orbot, Cubot, and Eggman and prepares to destroy them. With countless lives and the entire world at stake, Metal Sonic knows it's up to him to defeat Metal Sonic Ultra and save everyone. So Metal Sonic absorbs energy from the Master Emerald to transform into a giant version of himself and the final battle between Metal Sonic and Metal Sonic Ultra begins. Metal Sonic emerges victorious and saves everyone and Eggman promises he will never replace him ever again.
Edit: I just want to say this might have gotten some inspiration from Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, but I'm not exactly sure.
I always assumed the liquid puddle transformation came from the chaos data he stole. He could already shapeshift but couldnt turn into a liquid mass like that. Considering he had chacola and froggy during the entire game.

Well Neo's first appearance in the Archie Comics was cameo, but later after the Genesis Wave incident(s) he was seen interacting with Breezy and helped her build Casino Park from Heroes which has a TV Studio that hosted the Sonic Championship/Sonic The Fighters arcade game.
Watch The Sega Scourge. There is actually 2 metals. The first one that got left on little planet, that is why he is rebellious. Then Eggman made metal sonic 2.0. And when that got destroyed, Eggman then he Retrieved metal 1. Meaning the games aren’t in order.

Very cool video but just some things to consider:
1. You mentioned that lightning is an ability unique to Neo Metal; in his base form he has an attack that creates an electric aura around him to charge at Sonic with that then overloads his circuits and makes him vulnerable.
2. While Metal’s view of Eggman gradually got more negative and he did imprison Eggman as to not foil his plan, I don’t think he sees Eggman as a failure. He’s clearly intelligent enough to see him in a father or creator role (which is actually shown a bit in that one Sonic Mania cartoon when Amy returns him to Eggman) and wouldn’t see him as a failure, just a little incompetent to see the proper way to execute what Eggman wants-like if you were trying to explain to your Grandparents how a computer works over the phone.
3. While I think that Metal’s intelligence has been reduced since Heroes, I don’t think it was a permanent change since recently in Mania and other media he’s redeveloping his personality a bit with silent communication like the finger wave that he originally did in CD and did again in Mania. Perhaps rather than butcher Metal’s intelligence he installed a dampener, like Wheatley in the Portal series, in order to keep Metal more intelligent than his Badniks so he could better serve Eggman. Said dampener could be weakening and leading to a return of his intelligence. Who knows maybe one day it will wear off and Metal will actually grow into a more important character again.
I know some of my points are built a bit on Sonic Mania which is questionably canon as Sega and Sonic Team might try and sweep it under the rug to try and gloss over the screwup that was Forces; but I think that Sega will keep this adventure at least somewhat canon seeing as they’ve allowed Mephiles to keep appearing in a couple of no consequence games despite 06 being kinda hot garbage and Forces didn’t fail half as bad as that. Plus Mania and any potential sequels or spin-offs of it allow Sega to keep raking in nostalgia cash and produce games at a cheaper cost as 2D passion projects made in part by indie studios are gonna be less expensive than 3D games made by only them.
Overall this is a great vid and it’s cool to see Sonic content that’s good now as the movie was pretty good and the sequel was surprisingly even better. Hopefully Sega realizes the potential gold mine Metal Sonic could have in a game or film as an actual character and not a funny nostalgia boss you beat the same almost every time. (seriously Sega, you have to use metal props to 3D animate over for the films and Eggman has constantly been using unconventional power sources for his machines-it would have been so easy to use Metal in a Sonic Movie other than the OVA)

When I first played through the Sonic Heroes (I was like 10 I think?), I didn't get all the emeralds by the time I finished the stories, so I was like "huh, who imprisoned Eggman?". And when it was revealed that it was Metal Sonic, and the epic battle that followed - it blew my mind :D And after replaying the game recently - it is definitely the best 3D era game, and maybe just the best in general. It's so good :D And it's not nostalgia speaking - I've replayed SA1 and 2 as well as some other titles, and they were not nearly as good as I remembered them as a kid (although SA1 is still quite charming imo). But Heroes has A) fun gameplay (yes, sometimes buggy, but engaging and fresh nontheless) B) fucking fire soundtrack C) good story (and even the voice acting is not that cringe). Just bravo

Honestly, I just thought it was that Eggman was treating his Robots unfairly, and Metal didn't like that. Also, the lighting attack is probably the Ring Spark Field.
Another edit: In the wiki, it says through enough copied data or the power of a Chaos Emerald allows him to transform to his Neo form.
As a kid born after 2004 I played heroes and I enjoyed it being the no.2 sonic game

It's really strange and, in my personal opinion, unforgivable how SEGA treats that character. Not only does he not appear in that form in any new games, but there are also a lot of other ways for him to appear as Neo Metal Sonic, and those ways keep getting neglected as well. I didn't even know that neo metal sonic was in sonic heroes, I had to know of his existence from the Archie comics and learned about his plot idea from that one time he shape-shifting and lasted only 3 panels... WOOOOOO CONTEXT!

I'm not sure myself. In quite a few games, Shadow has had a somewhat neutral relationship with Eggman, so maybe he gave him back to Eggman so that he could do something with Metal (because Eggman would have also not been happy with the rebellion).

He rebelled because Eggman's scheme from Pinball Party was so darn stupid that it broke him.
In all seriousness, my theory is Gizoid tech.
Eggman found out about the Gizoid through Gerald's diary, which means he had access to that information as early as SA2, and he must've found it and began his experiments with it before he built Omega, because the Phi drones, which are inferior copies of a Gizoid, are numbered E-121.
The Gizoids, as a group, have one defining ability: Scanning and copying the powers of others, which is itself an ability that Metal only possessed from 2003-4 onwards, around the time that those experiments would've been happening. So with that in mind, it's probable that Eggman used the tech on Metal Sonic, as he wanted Emerl's power in a machine that was his own. Eggman's biggest weakness is his ego, and he'd almost certainly rather have his power-copying minion be a robot of his own design rather than someone else's.
Unfortunately for Eggman, controlling a Gizoid is difficult: They only obey the powerful, and as Eggman has no power of his own, the Gizoid-tech Metal Sonic wouldn't obey him, prompting it to go rogue and become Neo Metal, with a form that resembles Super Sonic and additional armour to confer his new authority and might.
This led to several knock-on effects. Firstly that Eggman tried activating the original Gizoid instead, which didn't work out for him. He then limited the copy power of the Phi drones so that they could only copy the abilities of one character, and couldn't gain more, keeping them under control. He also nerfed Metal to just copying one person at a time, hence why Metal always mirrors his opponent in Rivals, but that was still too much free will, hence why Metal hasn't displayed this ability since.
Eggman, being Eggman, forgot these lessons when he made Gemerl, but I think in that case he was more worried about hurting Sonic than protecting himself from further betrayal.

Ehm... I honestly think, the „puddle“ Form of his, is him using the already copied ability of chaos. And with that ability, he is able to shapeshift.
I think Eggman just gave metal sonic the data of chaos, or metal sonic found it himself. It is possible that Eggman didn‘t touch him at all, but metal sonic himself started upgrading himself and plotting the whole thing to be able to defeat sonic.
Metal sonic since the first sonic movie, seemed to have some sort of a complex against sonic. Probably wanted to prove that he isn‘t just a copy, but something better than the original.
So him being able to plot all this is nothing „surprising“ imo. Metal is smarter then people probably think.

I feel really bad for metal. all he wanted to do was become what he wasn't; the real sonic so he decided that if everyone was made of metal he would be the real sonic. Even he knows he's lying to himself and forces did him absolutely no justice. IDW should be made as a game on the cannon timeline because he actually appeared as a character with depth like sonic heroes. Metal overlord is just metal trying to normalize himself but alienated and isolated himself instead because a huge terrifying metal dragon isn't exactly you're every-day mobian. The truth is that metal hated what he is and that has been painfully obvious through his depression through other media eg sonic mania adventures and the spin off stories in the IDW comics along with the main timeline for them. To be honest it's just sad now.

And even if in Sonic Heroes they decided that Metal could talk always and not only as Neo, nowdays that is probably retconed due to the games later, Metal is mute, and to not break Heroes story, they made so Neo Metal can talk and regular Metal not

It's time that they stop creating new villains and give some old ones more focus. I've always wanted Metal to be his own character and break away from Eggman. It would be sweet if they made a game with a plot similar to the Brotherhood of Metallix arc, with Metal Sonic being the main antagonist with his own voice (both in his normal and neo forms) and motivations. I'll anything to avoid making him the usual "Robotnik's silent killing machine" again, there comes a point where even your most loyal creation grows tired of your goals.

Well in the IDW neo metal sonic come back, searching for Eggman, because after sonic forces no one know were he is, and the why did metal not apparear is beacause he was being upgraded to become Neo again but without the rebeld programation, because metal is a exact copy of Sonic so he is rebeld too, but when he was finished Eggman already lost; in the search of Eggman he decides to take Angel Island with the Master Esmerald and become this time Maste Overlord to try and beat Sonic.
