    Neo Metal Sonic’s first fight with Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow is exactly what I wanted from the Neo before he turned into that dragon….

    This is *exactly* why we love Ian Flynn. Much like director Jeff Fowler, he understands and respects the source material. He knows who the characters are, their personalities, how they interact, and clearly love the fanbase.
    I'm excited to see what both he and Jeff will do for the games and movies moving forward!

      Plus it just doesn't feel like he's being forced to appeal to haters, detractors, overly critical critics and even non Sonic fans! That's just what it feels like with the current writers!

      this is exactly the problem with ian flynn, he's too much of a fanboy, his writing never hits the potential and feels stale. he's basically the fanbase in a nutshell writing for sonic and online. i think he gets the characters right when they're fighting. but actually talking it's mainly expedition or long drawn out scenes of them well talking. not interacting with quirks of both characters, just talking. i really don't see anything so special..

    If the first arc brings back an old enemy with power, style and nostalgia, then you’re going to love this comic book series. It’s top notch. Also the art for Neo Metal is legendary.

    I personally really enjoyed this arc. While I do have some gripes with the IDW comics, I love how Metal Sonic is presented both in this arc and throughout this comic series. Even though he’s loyal to Eggman, he still feels like his own individual character with his own goals and motivations rather than how he’s presented in the 2010’s games, which basically stripped him of any actual character beyond being “Eggman’s Sonic doppelgänger” who serves no purpose besides being a boss fight. And the comic keeps him pretty consistent even AFTER he loses his ability to speak. While I definitely agree that Master Overlord was a very underwhelming final fight for this arc, I still enjoyed Neo Metal Sonic as the main villain for this arc.

    always impressing work with analysis man , finally , metal sonic had been given more spotlight despite not really liking the idea of him doing what he is doing to serve eggman , would have been much better if he did to achieve some thing that he could benefit him and robots like that of sonic heroes as that game established that he has free will , but i appreciate the writers doing some thing different than what heroes did , and who knows , maybe eggman did some thing to prevent what happened in sonic heroes ,

    It’s sonic heroes if the writers did something good with metal sonic. Jokes aside I loved this arc for the idw comics, not only giving neo metal a super form but he’s an actual threat that could beat the main cast. I was never a fan of metal overlord or metal madness, especially since they stole the show from neo metal sonic. so seeing neo for a majority of the arc, him go super, and fight the three strongest of the cast really made me happy.

    I wonder.. am I the only one getting increasingly frustrated that the Sonic comics have only been getting so much attention in recent years AFTER Archie's cancellation? I know it's mostly just a timing thing, but the IDW comics are often praised for doing things they weren't the first to accomplish (nor the best at executing). Things like mandates and the continuity of Forces very clearly hold the storytelling and worldbuilding of IDW back (to the point of reusing the same ideas and characters over and over at times), so it's just weird to hear so many treat it like the peak of Sonic stories or characterization.
    Unlike IDW, the Archie comics had significantly more freedom to express their creative vision, and there were TONS of incredible, original characters in the post-reboot Archie comics that were organically tied to the story of past games without recycling elements from them, and the established cast all acted more in-character as a whole (Shadow being a prime example). World building also wasn't nearly as restrictive as it is in IDW, and they could adapt any ideas and characters they wanted from all corners of the Sonic franchise to create a universe that truly felt like the definitive world of Sonic. Yet they don't get any attention from the Sonic fanbase despite having arguably stronger stories to go back and re-read. It just makes me pity those who genuinely don't know that the potential of Sonic's world goes far beyond anything we've seen in IDW.

    • @pixilatedink.7920
      @pixilatedink.7920 Před rokem

      It's not just the mandates, Flynn doesn't want the type of edgy stories like in archie or the 2000s games is because he was thinks it holds the series back

  • @goldenrider2925

    my only issue with this arc is it kind of retroactively rewrites neo metal in a way that hurts metal's character from heroes. the sonic channel materials related to the whole neo metal incident don't portray neo metal as eggman's idea having just glitched out, it's sonic's ego within metal's programming combined with his existential fear of only being a copy causing him to become sentient and rebel, but it was his decision to do so, which means not only was neo metal an upgrade metal decided to perform on himself, but metal overlord wasn't something designed by eggman but rather metal's own frankensteined "final form". he doesn't need anyone's data to assume it. hell it shouldn't even really different to neo metal in terms of power because he already has all of sonic and friends + chaos data before he transforms. metal overlord was a sort of aesthetic choice metal made to differentiate himself further from sonic (in the jp script of heroes for example, sonic says "you thought you could defeat me by becoming a monster" as he does in ENG, but they left out metal's response where he says "A monster? if that's how you see it, then i'm proud of the monster ive become" which is a really significant line to skip out on). but it also shows that even when he gains free will, rebels against eggman and strikes out on his own, he's still bound by his original programming - he made his immediate goal "kill sonic" and even his new, upgraded form stil looked like sonic. it's the tragedy of a character that clearly wants to be more when given the choice (he rebels again in one of the sonic riders games after all, so it isn't a one time thing) but couldn't, and this in turn reflects against sonic. sonic is a bohemian, worldly guy always roaming the world making friends and learning new things, while metal is completely alone and can only self reflect yet never broaden his horizons through meeting others and making friends. to reduce that to "eggman upgraded metal to neo metal, he glitched out and rebelled and eggman fixed it" is just extremely shallow and ruins a huge part of the only development metal has really been allowed to have since the OVA.
    dont get me wrong, i adore ian flynn's writing like 90% of the time and i get nobody is ever going to pay this much attention to the entire character roster (if i was in his shoes i definitely wouldn't either), but im really biased since metal is my favourite character in the series (whch is probably pretty obvious lol)
    anyway nice video!!

    First off, I love the IDW comics more so than the Archie comics (the pre Super Genesis Wave stories,) I think this was a good story and a great way to tell the events after Sonic Forces, while I'm not a fan of Sonic Heroes, I was happy to see Neo Metal Sonic return and is a big threat just like in Sonic CD and Sonic Heroes.
    Ian Flynn knows his sh*t and is pretty much the Sonic Lore Master and I think He's better than Meakawa and way better than Pontaff, granted Ian is not perfect but still, just wait till You read the next arc.
