Granite Peak: Summiting Montana's Highest Peak in One Day

- Granite peak is the highest point in Montana. It's also considered by some to be the second most difficult state high point to summit after Denali. It definitely was challenging but it didn't take 25 hours like the stranger in the the parking lot told me it might. Still, with around 8,400 ft of elevation gain and 24 miles of trail and scramble this peak is no slouch.
Music: godrocket / god-rocket
dude did almost a marathon while climbing almost a 13k foot mountain and he did it under 10 hours... what a beast
I appreciate those shots you take when you are climbing up those steep boulders towards the camera. Putting in the effort twice for our enjoyment. Sweet video!
Thanks! I love it when people point out that detail. They can be frustrating shots to get especially when I'm trying to go fast.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Way to go for the extra effort to get more different camera angles across your entire hike.
I'd also like to say I 100% appreciate the massive amount of effort that went into getting the shots.
On a side note, can you put some links to the gear you are using eg what shoes, what pack etc for noobs
@@MediocreAmateur Your timings are incredible in spite of the extra time spent filming. Great video!
Lol I would lose my camera very quickly by forgetting that I had set it up for a still
I'm 65 years old. Have been hiking and climbing mountains my entire life. You and your friends bring it to a level I've never seen or experienced before ... unbelievable what you guys can do! Respect!
You are one crazy, intensely in shape son of a gun. Love the trip man, just awesome!
Dude. Insane peak bag.
When I was growing up in Helena MT in the 70s and 80s, a family friend of my parents invited me to three consecutive Granite Peak attempts (1977, 1978, 1979). I was 13 the first year. That family friend was a Ret. Lt. Col. USARMY Special Forces, one of the first five SF Officers sent to Vietnam (before the US was officially involved). We never bagged it (time of day 1x, weather 2x). That trail you did from Mystic Lake is the exact trail we used on two attempts. I remember year one us sleeping on a big table rock as we were headed up, and counting 300+ meteors during a meteor shower. Those trips were my first introductions to glissading, roping up, big boulder hops, and my first official "beer with men as a man" (a can of Coors left in a little pipe under the trail below the dam).
This mountain looms in my past, nagging and teasing me to "come try again". Thanks for the great adventure.
“If the stranger in the parking lot is to be believed...”🤣
I dont think there's such a thing as an "irrational" fear of grizzly bears. Never can be too safe.
Took me 6 days to do it. I am in awe of this accomplishment. I subscribed and I'm binge watching your amazing achievements. I remember, I was glad I had my ski goggles hiking into the west wind on Froze to death plateau for a full day.
"I get the feeling that these mountain goats want to bump me off the mountain."
I just love this channel and Danny's humor and the way he words things.
Also - 9.5 hours?! What a beast! Maybe Kristof will join the next one.
Man I’d love to be like you. I’m from Alaska and used to working outdoors, but in recent years I’ve become a father to two kids, work full time and yadda yadda...
I always say I’ll “get back into shape” and then I lose motivation. Then i see videos like this and that all changes. And the cycle continues. I suppose one day I’ll have to make the choice to watch these types of videos from the couch, or go bite the bullet and see them for myself.
Great video. Thank you.
Fully agreed with your sentiments. What's surprising is he has kids too :)
The older you get the harder it gets.
I feel like I've been binging your videos for weeks. Great work!
Oh hell yeah! What an awesome peak! Thank you for taking the time to share these adventures with us.
Great video! Loved all the shots, quality was on point. Your time up and back is impressive! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome. Incredible. Inspiring. Everything about this; the route, the camera work, the editing and of course your insane fitness level.
Such an inspiration. You are fearless. You provide a stellar adventure every time and leave the rest of us wishing we could be as incredible as Dan the Man. Keep up the good work!
I do a bit of solo meandering up in the Winds and parts of Utah. Love your commentary, the extra time you take to get great video and your whole light and fast approach. Truly epic accomplishments and can’t wait to see more. Thanks for sharing.
This is definitely your best solo video Danny, and one of the best MA vids overall.
I'm really digging your channel. I grew up in SLC, lived in southern Idaho and am now in Portland. The point is I can really relate to your content! Keep it up
Dude! Your videos have given me the inspiration to get back into BC skiing and climbing after many years off. I did more BC skiing in the Truckee area this year than I did in all prior years combined. Now it's time to get some summit hikes in - in between dirt bike rides and fly fishing.
It took me 2 days to submit that peak - you are an animal! Well done! You captured some excellent footage!
Super impressive time for that route. Probably one of the faster ones that have been done. And nice edit-thanks!
Love all of your videos! Keep up the good work!
I’ve watched this video probably 5 or 6 times now. Climbed it from a different route over 3 days but this video gets me so stoked to go back!
You guys are making my "to do list" longer. I am definitely adding this one! Just finished Mount Rainier (Washington state) last weekend and it was amazing.
Hi. Another impressive effort and video.
Glad you made it safely.
As always, great photography and narration.
God Bless
Just reached the top of granite peak on saturday, came from the south-west, what an incredible climb! as always, your video was an inspiration :)
Froze to Death Plateau looks incredible, long sweeping flat/sloping plains high in the mountains. It's unreal. Thank you for capturing it.
These videos are so entertaining, informative and inspiring. I'm going to up my mileage in your honor! I'm running Santa Fe ski hill next week, a paltry 13M with 1M elevation, nothing compared to what you do back to back.
My goodness! Blows my mind hiking, in the dark, solo, in grizz country, Plus, considering you heard of 25 hrs to complete, your placement of camera ahead and behind and having to backtrack and pick it up must add time but so glad you did for a fantastic journey shared!
That's like an average speed of 2.5 miles an hour did you breathe at all ?
I hiked that trail in 1981, it was tough on a 16 year old.
I made it to the top in 14 hours camped out came out the next day.
I thought I was fast, Good Gawd your cardio must be insane !!
Helps a ton if you pack light. Even medium sized pack will weigh you down more than you're aware
Amazing trip as always.
You have the ultimate poker face. Even in the face of fear (or bloody puking in a bag - another vid), you are even-keeled and positive. Amazing, bro.
Wow man I really love this particular video..what incredible scenery. Take care and watch out for bears!
Loved your video- hope to replicate your climb in a couple weeks. Thank you for making this great video of your run/climb!
Great video and epic climb. I live and play around the beartooths. It is a magical place. New subscriber.
Absolutely nuts…awesome job 👍🏼
How amazingly beautiful! And I chuckled at you discovering your shirt was inside out. I hiked for 6 hours in Colorado last week before I realized my shirt was inside out 😁!
9:25 "don't need to worry about bears, because there are tons of people here"
People slower than me, you forgot yo say. 😂😂
You do a great job with your videos! Keep up the great climbs:)
Another super hike! But by yourself😱 wow. 🙋🏼♀️👍🏻
The algorithm 😉, recently introduced me to your Chanel . This video was insane! Amazing place and great filming with the back and forth. Thanks
Danny, lots of great effort on a solo trip. Be safe out there.
Great commentary and film work!
Again ,excellent filming and editing .
Another great one thanks!!!!!
Amazing view, well done
It does look very Scottish, and we would know :) Love your videos pal, they are bringing me all kinds of joy during these weird and difficult times, thank you!
Great job on self filming all of that! Very Impressive!
Epic Solo Trip! Nice Work 👊🏼
You, sir, are a very brave man.
I cannot even imagine the superb physical condition you and your friends are in. God Bless!
I just discovered you and this channel and will certainly binge watch. I am curious if you can share some of the key equipment you use or take with you on climbs like this. I did King’s Peak in Utah in a day last year and it was fun but brutal. Hoping I can refine my gear and energy plans for future climbs.
Been there done that is my second state High Point behind Texas Witch is nothing glad you enjoyed yourself in Montana it is the best state I live there now last 12 years after living in New Mexico amazing place to be
Subscribed, what a short, amazing video. Greetings from Japan
Awesome mountain! You are super cool!
This looks great 👍 thank you!
Nice. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing! You are so strong and in such great shape. Wish I was that strong. You had to even go back to get your camera so many times so you could film yourself. Only thing is, I would have loved to enjoy the wonderful scenery more by taking longer, but that’s just me. Your caution about grizzlies is wise. Thanks for sharing.
Props to that time! We ran up Mt. St. Helens in under three hours when they told us to budget six hours for the hike. And I was completely ill prepared for the mountains whilw wearing a t-shirt and jeans with hiking boots. That is what got me into mountain climbing. And that was a couple weeks before she blew again in July of 2004 and they closed the trail until 2007. Those Cascade Mountain peaks have a special place but completely different type of climbing than here in Idaho. Now I need to climb all the peaks in the Lemhi and Lost River Ranges.
I love the yo gabba gabba music and awesome scrambling 👍
Awesome thanks for sharing
Great vid shots. I know you had to climb back up or down to get the camera! You rocked it. BRAVO!!
Im from Billings,.. NOBODY does it that fast..Bravo Bravo..AWESOME vid!!!!!
That is a very impressive time you did it in. I've made one attempt on the route you took and DID run into a grizzly right where you are at at the 3:40 mark haha. It was standing and it was pitch black out (4am). I luckily looked up in time when I came around a corner to beam it from about 20 yards away and it was right on the trail! Everything was silent, the wind in my face luckily... it didn't move and I backed off. Gave it another go about an hour later when another climber reached me on the trail and it had left by that point. This happened in Sept 2019.
Did mystic, havnt done peak YET. Love the footage.
Danny, you are nuts!
Amazing that you made it up and back in that short a time!!!.. I don`t think there is a griz that can catch you. Your level of fitness is waaaay up there!.
May have to take a trip across the border when things open back up and nail this one, awesome place.
I've been binging your videos.... and really enjoying them. I have questions, so many questions! what is your resting heart rate (because you are a beast!) have you done the DEVILS PATH in the Catskills and if so how long did it take so I can feel really bad about doing it in three days lol.... great videos.....
Solo dark hiking in grizzly country is my nightmare. Glad it worked out for you!
You should check out the Cabinet Wilderness in Northwest Montana. There is a trail that goes from one end to the other. I think it is over 50 miles but you would be looking down on at least 50 different lakes along the way. Also you look like you are part Mountain Goat. I am highly impressed with your level of fitness.
wow, that's an impressive time, especially with all the camera work
I can't believe you did all that and still set up all those shots. I wanna do this peak but I'll spend a few nights haha
great video
Whoa, whoa, whoa...that was ridiculous. Bravo. Here's a trip for you: Day trip Darton Peak from Circle Park trailhead in Wyoming's Cloud Peak wilderness. No grizzlies, no climbing gear, but MUCH bigger boulders....for miles. I'd pay to see that video!
what a beast!
Absolute Beast!
Your fear of bears is not unfounded. They are no joke, I hiked to mystic today. Very cool spot
I's say Mt Rainier is the second most difficult state high point due to the technicalities and huge elevation change considering most people spend time at sea level right before driving up to the starting point. People die on it nearly every year. Thanks for the photo shots! Going there in a few days.
Gannett Peak in WY is actually the 2nd hardest high point behind Denali. Mostly due to the need for snow travel and the berg you have to traverse. I haven't seen all of your videos, so you've probably already done it by now and know what I'm talking about. This is a great video though. Planning to do Granite Peak next year.
Yeah Gannett is gnarly. Super isolated and takes alot to get into.
Cheers from Costa Rica. Tuanis
Thank you cigar chompin man. Beautiful lake.
I like to try this its wild climb .bear spray.😁beauiful scenery.take it easey enjoy your self.
3:50 has to be one of the top most beautiful clips you have taken!
Thanks!
Wonderful.
Major respect
I can not imagine the amount of extra mileage added for all the camera shots, I know that has to be tiring. Well done!
🤙 Enjoyed the shit out of this video as always! Thanks Danny!
Nice video
Dude! Youre a friggin animal. Most people do this in 2-3 days lol... Damn that's impressive! Also, having climbed both, I'd argue that Gannett Peak (HP of Wyoming) is harder than this thing, but this is no slouch either way!
you Sir are a badass!
Is the climbing class 4? Beta is all over the place. Heading up in a couple weeks and wondering if it's worth hauling the rope? Cool video. Thanks again for posting.
Great vid! Im climbing Granite this august w/o ropes and was wondering how sketchy it is descending w/o ropes. Im experienced but some photos of the summit block are nerve-racking. Any info/beta on the route would be helpful. Thanks!
Hey I saw no one followed up. How was it? I’m hoping to summit in the next week or so without rope. Sketchy?
Great video! Have you ever thought about doing Gannett Peak, Wyoming's high point? Approach is about 20-25 miles, it has some glacier crossings to get up to the peak. It takes most people several days, I'd be curious to see how fast you could blitz it out.
Ditto. Gannett is on my short list and would love to see it on here. Btw. That 2nd hardest state hp is what I've heard about Gannett.
We are thinking about doing it soon. It's intimidating for sure and I agree with Alex it seems like Gannet would be more difficult with the approach being so much longer and strenuous. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough.
There is a much shorter route that I've done from the Green River Lakes side. No trail. Not too many people even know about it.
Granite Peak is an amazing climb but as any experienced climber will tell you. Never underestimate the mountain. There was a tragic death a short while back. Where a 65 year old man fell just 200 feet from the summit.
The Father and Son team were attempting to climb the highest peaks in all 50 states. Both were experienced climbers but took some bad guide advice. Anyways the standard route involves a 10-12 mile hike to base summit.
Where things then can get kinda iffy depending on your route assent. Which in places could reach class 4-5. I wasn't prepared for it the first time and decided not to risk it.
Fortunately I was able to reach the summit about a year ago. But I'm glad I took the extra preparation. Better than the alternative as one can never be too safe. Bring along your fishing pole as well.
Monsters are reported to reside in some of these waters. But I haven't been lucky enough to catch one yet lol. Also remember phone service won't work up here and you're miles away from any emergency help so be prepared. :)
Happy the rappel from the summit isn't the only way off
I lived out near glacier back in 17/18. if you make it up there climb mt oberlin and reynolds. the views are dopeness
When in bear country good to have bells and pepper spray, also good to see what bears there are based on the scat.. brn/blk bear scat has twigs and berries in it, grizzly bear scat? Well it has bells in it and smells like pepper spray!!
Bells are actually useless in bear country. Bears have a very good sense of smell but not so good hearing/seeing, so if your close enough for the bear to hear the bells chances are youre already staring the bear in the face. Also, pepper spray is useless, they have bear spray for a reason. Educate yourself before educating others......
@@alexmather9349 bear spray is pepper spray! 😆
@@alexmather9349 Straight from Alaska Department of Fish and Game..."BEAR SPRAY IS A DETERRENT made of red pepper oil
(oleoresin of capsaicin). It inflames the eyes and upper

@@FELiPES101 Yes I know what bear spray is... Just saying bear spray and pepper spray are two different things. Didn't need the internet to tell me that, I've lived in grizzly country I think I'd know.
I like the (lack) of exposure on this peak much better than that ridiculous knife's edge on Capital.
Looks smokey unfortunately. Love the video!!
