  • The Samsung QN90D 4K Neo QLED TV faces some stiff competition this year, but we have a feeling Samsung knew that when designing it. While the QN90D carries over much of the picture quality performance from its predecessor, the Samsung QN90C, there is a long list of new features to consider. In this first-look video, we talk about what Samsung brought to this model, consider some key measurements, and get some first impressions on picture quality. Still, as we dig in, we discover new questions to answer in our forthcoming review.
    Oh, and as a bonus: Samsung is tossing in a free 65-inch TV to anyone who pre-orders the QN90D within the first three weeks of its coming out, links below.

    I'm getting sick of Samsung refusing to just give up and stop punishing their customers with their refusal to support Dolby Vision, across every range of display and monitor they make. From phones to TVs to high-end monitors. My S24 Ultra, my Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 and my QN95A all don't support DV.

      They won't ever do that because doing so would be admitting their error/mistake - and admitting defeat. They would "lose face" in the eyes of the world (in their minds) and that is entirely unacceptable to them. Keep in mind here that to add DV to their TVs would have only cost them less than $3 per unit. That's what this is all about. Less than a $3 licensing fee per TV sold.

    I own the first edition flagship Qled, the 2018 Q9F. Wow I am blown away by that Nit number and colour accuracy. Previously I have been somewhat un moved by peak nit numbers in newly released qleds and nqleds compared to the around 1500-1600 of the Q9F. This has my mind wandering into ‘is it time for an upgrade’ mode 😬😁

      2018? So that's the Q9FN? such a legendary TV.
      QLED. No wide angle layer. *SUPER* deep blacks that created a 3D effect in some scenes. As soon as that wide angle layer came in, they lost that ability.

      @@cronoesify Yes that’s the one. Hooked up to even the mid/high range Panasonic UDB820 4k Blu ray player it still looks real nice. It’s only downside is to get 10bit 444 chroma u have to mess about a bit with the settings (typically put on 24p frame rate) due to the 18gbps bandwidth limit, or make do with 420 if the disc doesn’t support the lower 24 fps.

    The QN90C used to be pretty high on my TV buying watchlist but with Dolby Vision steadily becoming the premium HDR format of choice for most streaming services as well as making its way more and more to 4K blu rays, I decided to scratch it off the list. I know that to a lot of people think the exclusion of Dolby Vision is not a big deal, but if you're paying a lot of money for a premium TV then you'd expect all the premium features. I doubt that Samsung will ever bow to pressure and finally start to support Dolby Vision but I kind of feel like they'll start to get left behind if they don't.

    • @michaelbeckerman7532
      @michaelbeckerman7532 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Agreed. All of Hollywood is moving in the direction of Dolby Vision now. Very few films are being released in HDR10+ today. It's really just a matter of time before Samsung will have to finally cave in and support Dolby Vision. Now, Dolby Vision isn't perfect and it still has its flaws and shortcoming, of course, but it is what the film industry has settled on for their default HDR format now it appears. Samsung can only try and buck that trend for so long.

    • @bpowick
      @bpowick Před 2 měsíci

      @@michaelbeckerman7532 it’s kind of similar to the old blu ray vs HD DVD battle. Technically HD DVD was slightly better but blu ray had more backing from movie studios so it won out in the end. HD DVD went the way of the Dodo. I guess it’s the same with any competing technologies within the movie industry, eventually one will win out. Dolby Vision is winning the premium HDR format race and if Samsung continue to refuse to support it they could end up getting left behind.

I think Samsung has a feature on one of its TVs that lets you change the size of the TV image on their 80 something inch TV from 80 something all the way down to 40 something. I think this is a great way to not have to look at giant faces when watching talking heads, just change to 40 or 50 something marches, then for movies or cinematic TV shows, which to FULL SCREEN SIZE. I dont know what size was measured here in the charts, I assume 65", correct me if i missed it somewhere but I got a 50" qn90d from Amazon last weekend and its already back in the box. Just way too dim for me with using it as a PC monitor. It was maxed at 50 brightness/contrast in game mode out of the box and it still looked no where close to 700-800 nits full screen so maybe the one I got is defective or they use different panels on smaller sizes. My Hisense 55" u8k just blows it away with brightness and contrast.

    • @michaelbeckerman7532

      They don't tell you because they don't want you to be able to make your purchase decision based on a criteria that they don't think you should be making it on. Just knowing the number of dimming zones doesn't tell you which TV has better/more advanced local dimming capabilities. If the processor can't control those zones effectively, then you could have one million zones and it wouldn't do you a damn bit of good. This is why TVs with lower zone counts but better processors (like the Sony LED's) consistently outperform TVs with higher zone counts and weaker processors.
