I think you kind of missed the point of "In Twenty Years or So." While your statement about it all being meaningless is true, I think the last verse of the song (and of the album) says a lot:
But I look at you
As our second drinks arrive
The piano player's playing "This Must Be the Place"
And it's a miracle to be alive
One more time
There's nothing to fear
There's nothing to fear
There's nothing to fear
Although the world is a meaningless, barbaric and pathetic comedy there is something that makes it worth it. Friendship and art. Which is to say perhaps all ideology and philosophy falls short of that simple fact. Which I think is great because after the first twelve songs we're meant to feel disgusted, deflated and depressed. FJM is reminding us that even though he hates the fact "each others all we got" it's STILL a worth while reason to be alive.
How I interpreted it as well
Is it just me or has Fantano been saying "a myriad" a lot lately?
Khari Saffo he said it at least three times in the Joey review
Glad I'm not the only one to notice that
Khari Saffo oh sure, a myriad of times
It's a good word

The final track on this record - 'in twenty years or so' is an incredibly emotive and moving piece of music. It has to be heard. It is a perfect summation of Father John Misty's beautiful balance of cynicism and faith in love.
This album was fucking amazing, I'm a big hip-hop head so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The instrumentation was phenomenal and Misty's vocals are godly. Definitely one of the top 3 best albums that has & will drop this year.
I have hip hip sampling videos on my channel. I think you might like them.
I'mma take that L and give you this W. You got some nice shit on your channel. Keep it up.
k thenks.
Bandstand stop self promoting I like your videos but seriously
I know I'm nearly 4 years late to this but I completely agree. I was completely enthralled with this record from the start and I'm such a hip hop head that it caught me off guard lol. Hope you're doing well!
Not the most sonically diverse album, can drag on too long during some songs but the entire album is masterfully crafted... great song writing and mesmerizing instrumentation. Let the album sit with you for a while and give multiple listens before you form your final opinion. Best album I've heard this year
agree, luckily a lot of the production gives variety to the personality of the songs because the instrumental does boil down to piano white noise and choir a lot of the time. However, one could argue that that choice puts the lyrical content at the front of the presentation of the album, which really is the star of the show. I think someone's enjoyment of this album really comes from their enjoyment of the lyrics, almost all of the negative reviews on RYM mention how the lyrics sound stupid or pretentious to them, which is a critique I understand, but personally I find them very interesting and idiosyncratic at times. I really enjoy this record.
Gotta walk around depressed to this
I feel like Anthony reads the lyrics to the songs as he's listening to them
ThePacemaker45 how could u not
I thought we all did that lol
Loved this album. Wasn't even on my radar until I saw it on the best albums list. The song Pure Comedy off the album brought me to tears for some weird reason the first time I heard it. I don't get exposed to a lot of new music (most of my friends just listen to popular rappers and EDM, which I enjoy, but there's not much diversity in what I listen to because of the type of people I associate with), so I'm incredibly grateful for this channel. Kamasi Washington's "The Epic" and this album are two albums that really touched me, which I wouldn't have been exposed to without this channel. So thanks man. Keep doing what you do.

The Green Day review was a strong 2 to a light 3 and that was a real review
Pure Comedy quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time. It was one of the first vinyls I bought and I regret nothing.
I'm glad I'm white and rich enough to relate to Father John Misty's cynicism.
You don't have to be white and "rich" to acknowledge the downsides of humanity
Im white and broke as fuck and i feel the cynicism
Can we stop putting race in literally everything, like omfg i can’t escape it
Yeah, it's real hard being white and unable to escape being called white. Tough life out here for a white person.
I’m beige and middle-class and relate to him. #metoo
Tillman's favourite album from a few years ago was Jeff Bridges' sleep tapes, and you can really hear the influence it's had on this album.
This album is cynical, and unfortunately cynics don’t like to be agreed with, so a general rule is when cynics are confronted with something that by any means they should all agree with, like this album, they instead choose to dismiss this as another aspect of society to disagree with, creating a paradox. In calling this album pretentious and somehow not ‘deep’ enough you’re critiquing yourselves as well, and are therefore falling into the same pretentious trap you criticise the album for falling into.
It is far braver and less pretentious to either agree or disagree with this album, accepting the possibility that you might be wrong, instead of trying to defame and dismiss it to avoid making that critical choice.
Its not a matter of consensus. This album was lazily put together.
He wrote words first then music second & it come out boring.
The track Balad of a dying Man on the Album explained it very well.
@@ElcoMoyer wtf? I know I’m two years late... but this was boring musically? I found the vocal and musical dynamics to keep my attention, and I rarely listen to folk/rock or whatever tf this is. I’m an avid Hip-Hop/R&B listener, and always thought folk was rather repetitive and easily anticipated. But this record proved me wrong when I first heard it. It’s one that I continually revisit, so much that I ended up on this video years later. I appreciate the songwriting as well, but I found this to keep my attention quite well. Leaving LA drags a bit still... but it’s fitting imo in regards to the topic, it’s about his move from LA to New Orleans.

Review Kdots face in the DAMN. album cover
Already four 9/10 albums. And here comes Kdot and Fleet Foxes.
Can someone tell me why people suddenly hate FJM so heavily? I seem to remember 'I love you honeybear' as being quite well received but now, looking at his latest singles and live performances on CZcams, there's always an army of angry dudes writing these offended "Fuck this pretentious douche, I hate him so much blablabla Fuck you mom"-comments.
And this comment section is real bad. People telling Fantano to kill himself and that his credibility is dead after this review? I'm guessing it has somehow become trendy to hate FJM now?
And no, this obviously isn't directed to all the reasonable comments being critical of the album or disagreeing with Anthony's score.
Father John Misty is hands down my all time favorite artist. I had been waiting for this review long before the album dropped. I like how you noticed his blows on these issues we becoming more sharp and to the point. This album is wonderful. The only thing I was upset about was how his two previous albums were so instrumentally powerful. The majority of the songs on his first two albums made me feel something deep down in the bottom of my chest at the beginning. Approaching the end of the song was an emotional orgasm. Making me feel powerful. Not too many of his songs on this album made me feel that way. But I love Josh Tillman and no matter what he creates I will always enjoy it.
The bit at the end of the memo reminded me of Radiohead quite a bit
why haven't you reviewed Kendrick's new album melon man?

Top 10 Statements Made Seconds Before Disaster
Excellent review! I agree 100% . Glad we aligned in the dissection of the album! Have been listening to it for weeks! Many favorites.
So interesting how he constructs his albums. The bite of his lyricism combined with that alt-rock epic feel in his composition and his overall musical storytelling. The album has a clear arc both in storytelling and in the musical score itself. Its almost like a modern day alt pink floyd. Many songs on the album are real tear jerkers if they were to catch you off guard, but even when im fully prepared, its hard to not well up a bit, and then laugh through it every time I hear the title song or Ballad of the Dying Man. UUUGGHHHH!
So is this Infinite Jest: the album?
dayofthegarbage no, its not as funny, entertaining nor as clever. honeybear felt way more inspired than this on all fronts
I'd say it's more like a really good late-era George Carlin special.
yes, but not as good
Nuno Martins infinite jest doesn't exactly reek of entertaining either
Or like a shitty and uninspired (but far more unsure, pretentious, haughty, and cynical) episode of Black Mirror
I listened to this a couple months ago surprised on how much I absolutely loved it great review

THANK YOU for reviewing all the underrated albums! I LOVE Tillman. And your channel
I'm about half way through my first listen, and I'm also loving it. In a way, this feels bizarrely like a companion piece, antithesis, or something, to Sun Kil Moon's newest album, which I could not get into. Just started thinking about that - not sure if that's actually a valid comparison, but I'm hearing some similar themes. However, the approaches to discussing and dissecting those themes are wildly different.

This is to deep for me im listening to sicko mode
I feel like this is one of the few times where people are butthurt over Anthony giving an album a GOOD score (Lil Boat being another)
Personally I really enjoyed it. It was a bit monotonous in terms of sound and themes, but there were enough great moments to make up for it.
Was this actually that controversial of a 9?
Anthony thinks this is a 10 now
really?
always has been
I listened to this album about 5 times, without taking time to listening to anything else, because I wanted to like it so badly. In the end, I compromised with myself and made an edited version of the album with only 6 tracks, minus all the long tracks. My problem with the album is that even though Tillman's sense of humor is enjoyable, there is a moment where it gets repetitive. His sentiment doesn't have variety, it simply has detail, and that could only go a long way. The reason why 'I Love You, Honeybear' was so good was because he was going at everything. Here, his target is singular, if not more vast.
Musically, it's clearly more ambitious, and it's the only thing that's convincing me to give it another try. One thing's for sure, it doesn't have the immediate gut punch of the previous album.
Although I will say, on the first listen, I probably would have given it a 9 too.
I think you can get away with a single concept when it is: the complete chaos and absurdity of society and human beings. Just my opinion.
This album ranges from mildly pleasant to overwhelmingly beautiful, a really great listen overall. Leaving LA and So I'm Growing Old on Magic Mountain somehow survive their imposing lengths to be two of the best songs on the entire record. 8/10
Great record. Spot on review.

After listening, I feel like he should have made this album before Honeybear.
I've listened endlessly to Honeybear and I became pretty desensitized/fatigued with his approach this time around, especially in terms of the instrumentation.
Then again, maybe it's good for people who get to hear FJM for the first time and appreciate the whole shtick of self-awareness wrapped in cynicism and the specifically grandiose musicality.
ILYH’s instrumentation is a big reason why I got into him... it made me want to cry. I was also starving for the instrumentation in PC.
ricerice A seriously thoughtful and worthwhile comment. That’s rare on YT in general, yet alone Anthony’s videos.
Agreed entirely
How many times have you listened to it?
Good review of a very interesting album.
I was honestly indifferent about this album. I've been sooo balls deep into Father John Misty, but I did feel like this album dragged along. I love the messages and different favors in it, and while I know that not all music is designed to be easily listened to, I find this hard to go back and listen to. It leaves me feeling impatient and draggy, though it does have its incredible and beautiful points!
Listening to the albums on this track now it’s like listening to a time traveller or Nostradamus 😅😂
He is way too energetic on this review, it's awesome.
2017, we generally positive reviews now!
I really enjoyed the first half and end of this album. From like 70% to 85% in I got bored but he drew me back in.
I will forever refer to father John misty as fava bean Pepsi.
I adore this album, glad to see someone saying something positive about it for once! I think the last track is absolutely gorgeous, the way Josh is able to capture those small, life affirming moments in a world full of cruelty, its honestly sublime
Totally agree with this review, Antonisty. The lyrics alone are superb.
Can't believe you ranked this above I Love You Honeybear, it felt far less concise to me than what has come before it.
