Father John Misty: Finding Your Voice
With his third studio album, “Pure Comedy”, landing on countless best-of lists in 2017, it can be seemingly hard to ignore the presence of one of indie rock’s most polarizing figures, Father John Misty. To understand Father John Misty, it’s best to look back to where he came from. In 1981, Joshua Michael Tillman was born into a religious household in Rockville, Maryland, in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
In his 20’s, Josh Tillman began to stray away from his family, and religious upbringing. He released 8 records under the name “J. Tillman”, and spent years touring with Fleet Foxes as their drummer. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Josh said, “I wanted to prove to myself prematurely that I was a serious artist and distance myself from how I grew up. I was catering to an archetype, to some sort of cowboy myth of what I wanted to be in my head."
In 2010, he experienced a loss of self-identity while on an intense psychedelic trip. He immediately left Fleet Foxes and moved to LA to write a novel. While working on the novel, he discovered a new voice. A voice that more accurately reflected his true character. This transformation was personified when he undertook the moniker, Father John Misty.
Under the new alias, he released his debut album, “Fear Fun”, which featured a song inspired by the novel he wrote in LA entitled, “I’m Writing A Novel”. The album has a much different sound from any of his previous work. Replacing slow and somber tunes with something more exciting and engaging.
By the time his second project, “I Love You, Honeybear”, was released in 2015, Father John Misty had made waves in the indie rock community for being an outspoken lyricist and performer. His new record was personal, humorous, sweet, and cynical.
In 2017, Father John Misty released his most controversial effort to date, Pure Comedy. From front to back, Pure Comedy is an uncensored critique of the entertainment industry and consumer culture at large. It forces us to look at the ugliest parts of humanity from a perspective outside of our own. On the title track, ‘Pure Comedy’, Tillman points out that, unlike other species, humanity relies on culture to dictate our thoughts and behavior. The album was met with universal acclaim, and a man who was struggling to find his voice only a few years prior is now a commercial success.
His latest album, God’s Favorite Customer, appears to be a much more self-reflective project. With singles like Mr. Tillman and Just Dumb Enough to Try, we get a glimpse into Tillman’s head and find out what he thinks of himself.
Father John Misty isn’t afraid to make people feel uncomfortable. He writes from a perspective beyond his own, allowing the listener to think about the bigger picture. He does this in a way that he never could as J. Tillman. In order to find his true voice, he had to become somebody new.

Id say Pure Comedy is his Opus, but in my opinion, Gods Favorite Customer is the best album, just because of how deelly he digs into his inner soul to bring some of the songs, like Please Dont Die, and The Palace. During a period of time, he was havin suicidal thoughts, and left his wife to live in a hotel room. Please Dont Die is written from the point of view of his wife, and is expressing how she doesnt know where he is, and she hopes hes alive "So, please dont die/Wherever you are tonight." The Palace is a reflection of that same time, except from his own perspective, his wife sees him as living in a hotel room, whereas he sees it as hes living in a palace, where he can escape the worlds problems. That is why this album is my favorite by FJM.

It really surprised me but I came to this same conclusion. Every album has been solid front to back, but this one has an extra dimension os pure gold solidity. It could have only been improved by possibly replacing Date Night. I really like that song, especially with the abrasive synth notes, but it seems to be less good the more I hear it.
Glad to see that someone else holds the album so highly.

Pure Comedy and Fear Fun are tied as my favorite Misty albums. The title track of Pure Comedy kind of reminds me of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" in terms of its worldview and its masterful poetry, and I love the way the tension and anger seems to build in the melody the whole time. There's also something ironically uplifting and liberating about his description of the human race as viewed by aliens. "Total Entertainment Forever" has a really exciting tune and a sexy saxophone flourish, and the last line always makes me cry. I think that song was the one that really turned me into an obsessive fan. Misty has a way of integrating music with existentialist philosophy and poetry that feels very natural and also kind of like a multi-sensory experience. I love what he does in "Nancy from now on;" the lyrics are these brutal images of alcoholism and self-destruction and the tune is just so completely joyous that you feel like you're in heaven. I especially love the part where he says "Hook me up to the tank and roll me to the door."

Got all the right moves. 81 i dunno man 1971. No kid knows life in the manner of say a 45-50 year old. Ehhh he comes across as an Old Soul, but still at 35 and seeing it for all its worth. Not very common. Maybe i was to sheltered. Regardless timeless songs & some of which youcan can apparently girate and convulse to. Which both of those things are fun to do. Id like more Pop Song #1 & #2 etc.... Totally encapsulated the late 80s and early 90s before any of us found 120 minutes. If u skated you knew Sub Pop but if not all you had was those Color Me Bad gems lol, anyways fucking rock on and give them the byrd if they dont like it

I think he’s a genius and one of the best artists in the world; I just wish he would focus more on his singing when he performs live, instead of doing the whole “frontman thing”. It takes away from singing abilities.
If you compare his more recent performances to his older ones, the older ones where he is just focusing on singing, are much better and much more powerful.
