I was the pacer running with Goggins on that section. What Michele is saying isn't 100% accurate. Everything up to the point when Goggins tells him to run his own race is accurate but not the words Goggins actually used. Prior to the part where we caught back up to Michele I mentioned to David how great of a runner Michele is and some of his accomplishments. So we both knew how strong he was. When we started running together we were doing the run/walk thing at the same time. When David finally said something to him about running his own race, he wasn't yelling at him. He was loud but that's because he's a purposeful and intense person. Some of the specific things he said were 'don't let us hold you back' 'common man you're faster than this' 'you're a great f*cking runner' 'you should run your own race'. Unfortunately Michele took it the wrong way because David doesn't care who's out there running. I've known David for a long time and all he tries to do is get the best out of people and that is what he was doing with Michele.
I can see that for sure. thanks for the clarity!
Thanks Joe. They cleared the air directly which I was happy to hear. Great job getting your boy home.
True I've been telling everyone bout that, that Goggins is there to challenge himself and others, but you know Michele took it the wrong way
Goggins wants The Best for everyhody. The Man is 100% heart and 0%ego. I'm sure he Just wanted Michele to unleash his full power. Nothing more.
Thanks for letting us know the truth, Joe.
That was pretty funny when he said he just took off after Goggins said that.

Well done Michele! Fantastic performance and thank you Billy for giving us this interview!
Congratulations on your accomplishment, Michele! Excellent interview, Billy.
Such an inspiring performance, thanks for this extra insights and this interview Billy!
Such a humble guy, but a mind of granite.
Michele is one of the most beautiful surprises of extreme ultrarunning. Mitico!
These videos are the best! I could watch them all day long
Excellent interview Billy. What a gentleman Michele is.... incredible insight into those dark moments, dealing with injury & hallucinating. Great work gents
Much respect with the attitude and approach to this race, Michele. Glad to get to hear how this played out with Billy's interview. It was fun being out there seeing this stuff IRL. Great job to both Michele and David Goggins for separating themselves from the rest of the field.
Congratulations on the win Michele. You are an ambassador of the sport through your passion and politeness. I’m inspired by your story. Great interview Billy.
soooo inspiring....... and what a quiet, powerful spirit........ THANK YOU for this interview!
Thanks for this great interview! 🙌💯❤️👏
"I don't need that energy, so I just took off and never saw him again". Rule to live by! Thumbs up to Billy for not dwelling on the controversy too long and going back to discuss Michele's race.
Amazing MG!! Class act all the way!! Congratulations on your win!! Great interview Billy!! Thank you!!
Great interview Billy! Thanks.

Congratulazioni Michele!! Davvero un grande successo!! Tieni alto il nome dell'Italia! Bravo! 🏃🇮🇹

Amazing accomplishment...you demonstrated to be a true winner🙌❤️🙏🏼

Massively Inspirational, I am a mid to back pack runner and have completed a 145 mile race, ran 200 miles from Big Ben in the UK to the Eiffel Tower in France and can totally relate to the Intense hallucinations, really tripping reminding me of my younger days haha, I will attempt a 250 mile race on June 23rd 2021 here in the UK, I toe the line on the day of my 50th birthday! Great work Michele, thanks for sharing Billy , you always produce such great content!
Such a shame that here in Italy broadcast agencies gave little to no space to what this man accomplished...
Btw DAJEEEE Michele
You are soo right! i Hate it!
We don't really hear about it in the states either.
Great interview Billy and Michele!!!! Michele, thanks for being so open with your answers and congratulations on a brilliant race and accomplishment! I thought your answers were thoughtful, insightful and honest reflections post race. Billy, thanks for asking what you did and giving Michele space to address those questions. And personally, I'm going to chalk up the misunderstanding/misinterpretation to just that. As the expression goes "no harm, no foul" ;-)
Can’t wait to do it someday
Grateful thanks!
Congratulations to all who ran. Big respect to you all.
"hobbled the last thirty miles" haha these guys are incredible
congrats Michele! Wow what an amazing and inspiring accomplishment! In most of the ultras i have run there is some kind of drama. emotions come out sometimes when we do these things. mine is usually self doubt and self directed and that can be a problem too. glad to hear Mr Goggins finished too!
Great interview. And the comment section is just as great. After that many miles, I am not sure if I can hear English straight. And the guy is from a different culture. They talked it out and handled like men after the race. Both have my respect!
Congratulations!!!
I understand where both men are coming from - they just come from different worlds.
David comes from a world of competition and "grunt n grind" work. He also grew up very differently.
Michele sounds like he is more of a laid back chill person when it comes to these events and when it comes to sport. Not that he's not out to win or do well, just that he finds more importance in the camaraderie than the win. He also grew up very differently and comes from a different socio-cultural background (Italian I believe).
To be honest, I greatly appreciate both perspectives on the sport and believe they can both provide opportunities to motivate different types of people.
Congrats man.
Safe to say Michele took David Goggin’s soul that night.
He’s almost ten years younger.. had they been the same age. Goggins would’ve obliterated him.
Goggins was older way heavier and he got lost a lot of miles at apoint of the race, any way a win is a win Michele performance was great.
You are exactly right! He did take Goggins's soul
@Dominic jonez Age is much less a factor in ultras and especially in multi-day events. There are harder men and women than David (e.g., Courtney) except they don’t advertise it.
Courtney Dauwalter still Number One, that SuperHero for the new Generation... Although the runners get closer to her under 58 hours record...
Woah no way a women hold the moab record ?
Had Michele on my podcast- 15 Minutes of Mental Toughness- which will be released soon. He is such a great person. His focus of his ultra journey is about uniting the mind/body/spiritual journey is what his message is all about. He is not ego based whatsoever. He is a complete human being, and one worth following to be your best.
What a genuine guy! I like this kind of runner...I LOVE Goggins, but really the in your face "motivation" gets old. Michele is so relaxed and chill. Much respect.
Grandissimo Michele....Daje Sempre !!!!!!!
michele comes from the opposite background compared to Goggins, still same spirit lives within both. We are all the same, amazing!
Our champion!!! 🔝💪❤️👏🇮🇹Grande Michele!!!
Special man and special athlete! Grande Michele, complimenti!!!
Congrats
Great interview. I'm gonna start using "buddy man" too
One soul, not taken.
Billy - “a minor problem” ... An Achilles injury is no joke!! It can keep athletes out for a full year if it’s ruptured and some people never come back the same! Amazing he finished the last 30 miles with that sort of injury. Good interview though! Imagine beating Goggins in an ultra. The feeling...
Respect
It is unfortunate that @mickeygraglia only tells part of the conversation with @davidgoggins. He fails to mention a critical part of the conversation that changes the tone of the entire dialogue and that is when Goggins told him “you are a phenomenal runner, much better than me. Don’t run my race, go out there and win this motherfucker and get that record.”
Unfortunately leaving out that part of the story changes everything. Anyone and everyone that follows or knows of David Goggins understands that he was telling @mickeygraglia to run his own race using the colorful language that he always uses. No time to be sensitive!
Big fan of Goggins but how do you know this is what he said? Or are you simply interpreting this yourself??
I can see goggins getting pissed off with a guy matching his running / walking pattern so I can easily imagine goggins saying what this guy has said he said. All I know these distances are of the charts to even finish never mind win.
I was the pacer for this section. I just did a separate post on how the exchange actually happened.
@@pinpointmarketing4183 that’s his wife. Thankfully both David and Michele cleared the air directly.
Hi Jennifer, there were absolutely no hard feelings towards David. In both this interview and my IG post I simply stated that his reaction, coming out of the blue, threw me off and that was pretty much it. I think people comments and reactions added drama to the plot although I was very happy to get the chance to talk with David this morning and clear the air between us. We saw each other at the finish and only have respect for your husband! Congrats again on your Team effort and hopefully we'll cross paths someday soon! Ciao
@JenniferKish I think anyone who has watched a video or an interview with David Goggins understands that he is a very intense and driven individual. Clearly he just wants to get the best out of himself and everyone around him. I'm sure that the vast majority of people know that his message to Michele during the race was intended in a positive way. Ultrarunning fans have huge amounts of respect for David Goggins and the way he approaches challenges. About their interaction, I think Michele was just pointing out that the two of them have different mindsets during a race.
Michele always has such a positive energy about him. I think a better match up for a running partner for him would have been Courtney Dauwalter 😂. I don’t think Goggins is a bad person, but most people understand that he is a bit of a loner. He’s not your typical ultra runner who is out there enjoying the scenery and loving life. I have lots of respect for Michele who was able to persevere despite the negative energy he encountered. 🙌
Blah Blah Blah why would anyone try/want to match pace with David Goggins? Michele created his own controversy which he proves by speeding up after Goggins "said that."
this man loves running and is built to win ultras. Goggins hates running and teaches us to do something we hate daily.
As far as Goggins having a burst of competitive anger, that is perfectly fine too, being PC is boring af.
Exactly. This guy doesn’t understand. Michele is a great ultra runner. Goggins is a grinder. Goggins isn’t an ultra runner. And hopefully if someone informs him of this he won’t respond.
goggins has been running ultras since 2005. Thats 15 years. He's most definitely an ultra runner, and one of the most experienced of all the runners on that day. In fact he has more races under his belt than Michele...
Whether goggins claims to like it or not doesn't change this fact. Or the fact that Michele is better
#takingSouls
@@benjaminsemugga3842 Well you also have to factor in Goggins build. Hes never been a skelaton like a lot of these guys so im sure he would be able to hang if he dropped his muscle.
@@zacw812 completely agree with that thinking! Goggins definitely does not have a long distance build. Its incredible that he runs these distances with such a muscular physique. Absolutely incredible.
@@benjaminsemugga3842 Goggins also does over 4,000 pullups in a 24 hour period. Ultra-running and pullups and all the other crazy shit he does are tools to get to other destinations. The only aspirations for an ultra-runner is to run an ultra-marathon and place as high as they can. Goggins is beyond that level of aspiration.
What an amazing race. What incredible strength. Superhuman. Splendid in every possible way. Great competition with David Goggins. Both men of steel, epic runners, and examples for us all.
thanks for the interview! i am learning from each experiences. seeing some videos of Goggins, i anticipated the reaction before Michele said it. i find inspiration in Michele saying so peaceful, from heart " well i respect the other mentality." no judgement. which is so true... we are different and should not try to change others.
and i believe it is one of the reasons he won. when you come from the heart, from JOY you have more energy!!
i do not resonate with Goggins swearing and working hard, effort, effort, focus on effort. The true winners in my opinion are those who have JOY in heart and training is joyful, being with others, enjoy others around you. I always feel warmth, kind heart from these people. That is why i love Courtney and Scott Jurek . They have such positive energy. I will always remember what Scott said when he ran in Mexico with Tarahumara: "I did not come to run against them, but WITH the Tarahumara. "
which imho is a profund wisdom of a joyful heart.
@L B well put in words: indifference to others is his “charm”. the only reason i believe he has fans is because many people resonate with the ideea of push hard lots of effort in life and also similar trauma. but well everyone is at his pace and checkpoint in life. Life is an ultra-marathon :) same race track but lots of difference experiences of that same place.
bloke is such a g
Billy when is Goggins going to be on your podcast?
Why aren't more people watching and talking about this
At least Goggins is consistent with his philosophy. I can see how he would not like to see another runner holding back. I've seen a lot of criticism of him on social media, but have those people even watched his videos? He's not pretending to be anything he's not!
Bro that's just how he talks, he dont talk soft words, he is just like that, he also said I am the most misunderstood human being, and he is, and he was honest about it. He is just a different person doesn't mean he was talking shit he was there to challenge you and him
I would love to hear a neuroscientist talk about these running hallucinations, very curious...
Day dreams merging with reality I suppose
just read up on extreme bodily fatigue mixed with major major sleep deprivation
Focusing on your deep breath for 10 hours at a go while running will definitely get you into a hallucinatory trance... There's ancient tribes in South America and Africa that do this as initiation
Try smoking meth for 2 weeks😎😎😎👍
@@roberthoule4504 yupppppp
Billy is this channel your full time job?
I think Michele misunderstood the meaning behind what David said. I think he wanted Michele to run his own his race so he could realize his own potential. He didn’t want to hold Michele back because he knew that he was capable of more. And we all know David talks loud in general and curses. It’s not always personal with anyone else. That’s just who he is.
Now even if I’m wrong and David was actually being a jerk, the guy was over 70 miles into a race. To anyone who has completed ultramarathons, have you always been in the best mood for every second of every race? Not everyone is happy every second of every race like Courtney Dauwalter. Ultras suck and sometimes when running 50, 100, 200+ mile races you’re going to get a little irritable. Heck, people are out here literally hallucinating. So if someone has a moment of weakness where they get angry during a race don’t hold it against them. Honestly I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often. The kind of strain these guys are putting their bodies and minds through is so unfathomable to run 240 miles over several days. So I don’t expect them to always be sunshine and rainbows.
I'm so confused to the marker tampering? People physically moved or messed with signage on purpose to mess up the athletes?
Your video good Congrats!, I ran until now for the year 2020 only, many ultra marathons races register in duv ultra marathons statistics many thousands! miles!! 😊😊and I have to run one more race 100km on December 2020..
He's the Marco Pantani of running. The Pirate 2.0
Nice to interview Billy! What a great guy a fantastic roll model for ultra running👏👏some other people should just stick to cross fit and anger management 😂😂
I am a Goggins fan. Was unfortunate he had to snap at Michele, but imagine you are already as primitive as Goggins is, AND you have the stress of having gone 70 miles already. Goggins did say "you know your worth" - Goggins is so competitive that he could not have seen Michele staying with him as anything other than an insult eventually - its just how he's wired. Imagine you are Goggins and you think someone is coddling you, taking it easy on you. I really hope those two get a chance to chat about it, I think is 100% that Goggins would have a laugh with him about that exchange now.
He probably didn't snap, though. Goggins vocabulary is made out of swearwords, which others aren't used to, so Michele probably mistook David for snapping, also David's usual voice is loud as well. Another thing, David probably wanted Michele to do his best and improve his score (aka doing your best from the beginning till the end) instead of running at David's pace, which is slower than Michele's. Improving your previous self is David's priority from the start, while Michele's isn't, hence the difference in mindsets. IMO
Please correct me if I am wrong, I could've missunderstood something, since English isn't my first language.
@Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this dude needs to harden up in that area... Goggins was just giving him encouragement. Not sugar coated.
@Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this I believe I said he needed to harden up in the being sensitive area. Not trying to take away from his amazing accomplishments at all...

We spoke. No need to continue the back and forth. Misinterpretation.
@Billy Yang Films --- no, not about the "controversy", you've been watching too much politics! : ) Competitors should be able to give each other some crap, who cares? I mean just about the race, his experience of it, what it meant to him, etc. Its the news cycle that tries to create drama where there is none!
But thank you so much for responding.
This guy (Michele) is just an elite athlete with extraordinary genetics for running. Goggins is one of the toughest men on earth that runs as part of his routine, which includes many other things. In terms of mental strength, this guy is just above average (for him is easy to win due to his talent), whereas goggings is a giant (one in a billion). Talent in endurance sports does not neccessarily correlate with mental strength, not at all.
the "talent factor" only applicable to 5k runners? Really?. It seems that facts do not confirm this assertion. There are countless counterexamples. Let's consider trail running for example. Killian Jornet, the best trail runner of Europe, is by far the best trail runner in Spain, and do you think that it is because of mental strengh??. Well, that is preposterous to say the least. No doubt Killian is a tough, hard working guy who trains like a savage, but it turns out that his VO2 MAX is one of the highest ever recorded, namely 92.0 (www.topendsports.com/testing/records/vo2max.htm), which establishes him as a freak of nature, because such a result can not be obtained unless you have a genetic predisposition (natural talent). No matter how tough his spanish competitors are, they will never have such a high maximum rate of oxygen consumption by their bodies during exercise, which means that a well trained killian is mathematically unbeatable regardless of mental strength. Even himself admits, that winning important, hard races is most of the times very easy.
Goggins doesn't have the body(genes) for ultra races he's too muscular. And his best tool is far away his mental toughness. He really don't want absolutely winning competition he want to challenge himself in a hard way. It's a mind thing and u have to be alone that's where all your demons show off. And he wants people to do the same. He's not about winning. What do u expect for someone who doesn't celebrate his victories? He faced how hard life is about. try to understand that. And the cute and soft Michele can't understand that like many of us. But when life put you so down that u can only count on yourself, u understand him. I understand him. Leave him alone. Do your thing and shut up.
@Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this .....................................................LOL! *&%¿*!!!
