    I was the pacer running with Goggins on that section. What Michele is saying isn't 100% accurate. Everything up to the point when Goggins tells him to run his own race is accurate but not the words Goggins actually used. Prior to the part where we caught back up to Michele I mentioned to David how great of a runner Michele is and some of his accomplishments. So we both knew how strong he was. When we started running together we were doing the run/walk thing at the same time. When David finally said something to him about running his own race, he wasn't yelling at him. He was loud but that's because he's a purposeful and intense person. Some of the specific things he said were 'don't let us hold you back' 'common man you're faster than this' 'you're a great f*cking runner' 'you should run your own race'. Unfortunately Michele took it the wrong way because David doesn't care who's out there running. I've known David for a long time and all he tries to do is get the best out of people and that is what he was doing with Michele.

    I understand where both men are coming from - they just come from different worlds.
    David comes from a world of competition and "grunt n grind" work. He also grew up very differently.
    Michele sounds like he is more of a laid back chill person when it comes to these events and when it comes to sport. Not that he's not out to win or do well, just that he finds more importance in the camaraderie than the win. He also grew up very differently and comes from a different socio-cultural background (Italian I believe).
    To be honest, I greatly appreciate both perspectives on the sport and believe they can both provide opportunities to motivate different types of people.

    It is unfortunate that @mickeygraglia only tells part of the conversation with @davidgoggins. Don’t run my race, go out there and win this motherfucker and get that record.”

    and i believe it is one of the reasons he won. when you come from the heart, from JOY you have more energy!!
    i do not resonate with Goggins swearing and working hard, effort,effort, focus on effort. The true winners in my opinion are those who have JOY in heart and training is joyful, being with others, enjoy others around you. I always feel warmth, kind heart from these people. I think Michele misunderstood the meaning behind what David said. I think he wanted Michele to run his own his race so he could realize his own potential. He didn’t want to hold Michele back because he knew that he was capable of more. And we all know David talks loud in general and curses. It’s not always personal with anyone else. That’s just who he is.
    Now even if I’m wrong and David was actually being a jerk, the guy was over 70 miles into a race. To anyone who has completed ultramarathons, have you always been in the best mood for every second of every race? Not everyone is happy every second of every race like Courtney Dauwalter. Ultras suck and sometimes when running 50, 100, 200+ mile races you’re going to get a little irritable. Heck, people are out here literally hallucinating. So if someone has a moment of weakness where they get angry during a race don’t hold it against them. Honestly I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often. The kind of strain these guys are putting their bodies and minds through is so unfathomable to run 240 miles over several days. So I don’t expect them to always be sunshine and rainbows.

Goggins did say "you know your worth" - Goggins is so competitive that he could not have seen Michele staying with him as anything other than an insult eventually - its just how he's wired. He probably didn't snap, though. Goggins vocabulary is made out of swearwords, which others aren't used to, so Michele probably mistook David for snapping, also David's usual voice is loud as well. Another thing, David probably wanted Michele to do his best and improve his score (aka doing your best from the beginning till the end) instead of running at David's pace, which is slower than Michele's. Improving your previous self is David's priority from the start, while Michele's isn't, hence the difference in mindsets. IMO
      Please correct me if I am wrong, I could've missunderstood something, since English isn't my first language.

  • @davidrodriguezcastano5075

    This guy (Michele) is just an elite athlete with extraordinary genetics for running. Goggins is one of the toughest men on earth that runs as part of his routine, which includes many other things. In terms of mental strength, this guy is just above average (for him is easy to win due to his talent), whereas goggings is a giant (one in a billion). Talent in endurance sports does not neccessarily correlate with mental strength, not at all.

    • @davidrodriguezcastano5075
      @davidrodriguezcastano5075 Před 3 lety +4

      the "talent factor" only applicable to 5k runners? Really?. It seems that facts do not confirm this assertion. There are countless counterexamples. Let's consider trail running for example. Killian Jornet, the best trail runner of Europe, is by far the best trail runner in Spain, and do you think that it is because of mental strengh??. Well, that is preposterous to say the least. No doubt Killian is a tough, hard working guy who trains like a savage, but it turns out that his VO2 MAX is one of the highest ever recorded, namely 92.0 (www.topendsports.com/testing/records/vo2max.htm), which establishes him as a freak of nature, because such a result can not be obtained unless you have a genetic predisposition (natural talent). No matter how tough his spanish competitors are, they will never have such a high maximum rate of oxygen consumption by their bodies during exercise, which means that a well trained killian is mathematically unbeatable regardless of mental strength. Even himself admits, that winning important, hard races is most of the times very easy.

    • @alphaangelo9837
      @alphaangelo9837 Před 3 lety +3

      Goggins doesn't have the body(genes) for ultra races he's too muscular. And his best tool is far away his mental toughness. He really don't want absolutely winning competition he want to challenge himself in a hard way. It's a mind thing and u have to be alone that's where all your demons show off. And he wants people to do the same. He's not about winning. What do u expect for someone who doesn't celebrate his victories? He faced how hard life is about. try to understand that. And the cute and soft Michele can't understand that like many of us. But when life put you so down that u can only count on yourself, u understand him. I understand him. Leave him alone. Do your thing and shut up.
