March 12th, 2011. Billed as “The Threat Is Real”, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez took on undefeated Sergiy Dzinziruk aka “Dzyna Razor” in the second defense of his Ring Magazine World Middleweight Championship.
The vacant WBC Diamond Middleweight Title was also on the line for both veteran southpaws.
Prefight records; Martinez 46(25)-2-2, Dzinziruk 37(24)-0.
In April 2010, Martinez garnered the WBC, WBO & Ring Magazine World Middleweight Titles via UD12 over Kelly Pavlik and successfully retained his newly won Ring Magazine Crown via a sensational KO2 victory over Paul Williams in November 2010.
For his second defense, he was up against unbeaten WBO Light Middleweight Champion Sergiy Dzinziruk making his 160 pound debut.
Note: Martinez was unfortunately stripped of his WBC & WBO World Middleweight Titles by the respective sanctioning bodies shortly after he lifted those titles from Pavlik thus he was left with only the Ring Magazine belt to defend.
Entering the bout, the challenger had meaningful wins over the likes of Sebastian Lujan, Lukas Konecny & Daniel Santos while the champion had defeated top oppositions such as Adrian Stone, Alex Bunema, Kelly Pavlik & Paul Williams.
In the opening round, Sergio started fast by establishing his right jab early and in round 2 he began to connect with straight lefts and right hooks to the head at a high regularity while mostly outjabbing Sergiy who was known to be a strong southpaw jabber.
Dzinziruk was able to land a number of clean head shots in round 3 when Martinez momentarily abandoned his jab in search of counter punching opportunities but he managed to reestablish his jab later in the round.
In round 4, Sergiy was knocked down for the first time in 12 years with a fusillade of punches followed by a left-right combo. After beating the count, he came back with a few good right hands upstairs although he also absorbed a fair amount of punishment in return.
Both fighters landed their share of clean shots in round 5 but with about 10 seconds left to the bell, Sergio scored the second knockdown with a right-left combo twice but the challenger came back well and connected at near equal terms as Martinez in the following round.
In round 7, Dzinziruk did his best work as he evidently outlanded the champion for the first time in the fight.
Moments after the first minute of round 8, Sergio delivered a pulverizing left hand to the chin that badly hurt Sergiy who hit the canvas hard but somehow managed to rise to his feet in a great display of determination.
However, the end was inevitable as Maravilla’s killer instinct kicked in; he followed up with nonstop barrages of pinpoint shots to blunt the unwavering will of "Dzyna Razor" with 2 more knockdowns which prompted referee Arthur Mercante Jr to step in and call off the assault.
With this victory, Sergio Martinez retained his Ring Magazine World Middleweight Title in one of his most stunning performances as it was largely considered impossible to look impressive against a strong technical southpaw who was also a very good defensive fighter.
As for the 35 year old Sergiy Dzinziruk, he was handed his first career loss in 38 fights and the 5 knockdowns suffered in this bout were the first 5 times he was ever decked in his pro career that began back in January 1999.
Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of a big win by MARAVILLA MARTINEZ and remember to SUBSCRIBE for continuous boxing goodness!
    Stay safe and keep punching.

Martinez had a weird career. The most notable part of his run was during his degradation as a fighter. He was better and faster than even this at 154.

Maravilla fue un buen boxeador con una cualidad de velocidad y potencia solo que cuando estuvo en su apogeo no hubo muchos grandes nombres en el peso medio de esa época y también hubo quienes lo evitaron
