January 7th, 2011. "El Maestro" Mauricio Herrera battled the unbeaten "Siberian Rocky" Ruslan Provodnikov in a bid for the inaugural IBF North American Light Welterweight Championship.
At this juncture of Herrera’s career, his only loss was a disputed SD12 to former WBO Super Featherweight Champion Mike Anchondo back in December 2009.
Prefight records; Herrera 15(7)-1, Provodnikov 17(11)-0.
It was a highly competitive encounter where Herrera often landed with punches in bunches while Provodnikov frequently found his mark with power connects.
In rounds 1 & 2, Herrera was effective in sticking and moving by using a sharp jolting jab against Provodnikov who occasionally landed head shots.
In round 3, Herrera’s left eye was grotesquely bruised after making the mistake of slugging it out with the hard hitting Provodnikov a number of times.
In rounds 4 & 5, Provodnikov connected with the cleaner punches as Herrera elected to trade with him again.
In round 6, the pace slowed down considerably as both men threw and landed economically.
In rounds 7 & 8, Herrera reverted to his earlier strategy to good effect which puffed up both of Provodnikov’s eyes and stifled his punch output in the process.
In round 9, Herrera efficiently worked the body at close range which gave him the openings to shoe-shined Provodnikov with quick barrages of blows to the face in rapid successions.
In round 10, both fighters had their moments as Provodnikov often connected with hard right hands while Herrera landed volleys of lefts and rights upstairs and downstairs.
At this point, Provonikov’s right eye was swelling shut while the welt on Herrera’s left eye had gotten worse.
In the penultimate and final rounds, both fighters rallied hard and once again had successes at near equal measure.
After 36 minutes of Light Welterweight action, Herrera was awarded a UD12 with scores of 115-113 & 116-112 (2x) to become the first IBF North American Light Welterweight Champion.
This was the 1st significant victory for the 30 year old Californian who was largely an overlooked underdog against the undefeated 26 year old Russian prospect. He was ultimately rewarded for his slickness, skills (notably his jabs) & most of all his grit in overcoming adversity to triumph over a strong contender.
As for Ruslan Provodnikov, he displayed great fighting heart and deserved the utmost respect for his gutsy performance despite suffering the 1st defeat of his pro career.
However, some have debated the outcome as they thought the Beryozovo-born brawler did enough to earn the nod.
Personally, I thought it could have gone either way due to many close rounds in a bout of tremendous ebb and flow.
What do you guys think of the verdict? Let me know in the comments.

Maidana in an absolute war 100%. Prov would get stopped on cuts or something, and he'd probably still be on his feet and angry about the stoppage lol.

Maidana. While I dont think he'd stop Provo since he was tough as nails and even Matthysse who hits harder than Maidana couldn't stop him. Maidana is relentless and is even more dangerous and savage when he's hurt or gets dropped which I figure at some point Provo would hurt him. Example Ortiz vs Maidana.

Herrera got robbed quite a few times in his career, especially his career defining unofficial win over Danny Garcia in Puerto Rico. Even the crowd booed Danny.

    • @OGFrylock
      @OGFrylock Před rokem

Herrera should've won but to be fair, the crowd booing doesn't mean much. The crowd booed Mayweather when he beat Pacquiao and that fight wasn't close.

He also got horribly robbed against Jose Benavidez. Footage of that fight has been 100% scrubbed from the internet, it's wild. Can't find any video of it anywhere.

@@donjohnson3888 Oh yeah that was even worse than the Garcia fight. Straight up outboxed and outfought Benavidez. That's usually a forgotten fight since the Garcia fight was more significant. But yeah I remember that one.

@@duckyh9712 They booed because they paid to see Mayweather lose, and he didn't. If that fight killed boxing, why are boxers so highly paid? Face the facts ungoy, Pacquiao was never better 😂
