April 17th, 2010. Kelly Pavlik aka âThe Ghostâ takes on Sergio âMaravillaâ Martinez in the 4th defenses of his WBC, WBO & The Ring Magazine Middleweight Titles which he won via TKO7 over Jermain Taylor nearly 3 years ago.
Prefight records; Martinez 44(24)-2-2, Pavlik 36(32)-1.
Back in October 2008, Martinez defeated Alex Bunema via RTD8 to become the interim WBC Light Middleweight Champion. He retained his interim status after fighting Kermit Cintron to a D12 in February 2009 in his 1st defense and earned a shot against the legitimate WBC Light Middleweight Champion âThe Viperâ Vernon Forrest.
Unfortunately, Forrest was stripped of the title as he suffered a rib injury which rendered him out of action for an indefinite period of time. Thus, Martinezâs interim title was upgraded to full WBC title status instead.
Although a Sergio Martinez vs Vernon Forrest was still mandated by the sanctioning body but the fight did not happen as Forrest was tragically murdered in a gas station on July 25th 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia.
In December 2009, Martinez took on âThe Punisherâ Paul Williams in his 160 pound debut and lost a highly competitive MD12. For his next fight at Middleweight, he challenged reigning WBC & WBO Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik.
Thus, this was Martinezâs 1st ever world title fight in 13 years as a pro.
Back in September 2007, Pavlik defeated Jermain Taylor via TKO7 to garner the WBC, WBO & The Ring Magazine Middleweight Titles. It was named Fight of the Year by the BWAA.
Between June 2008 to December 2009, he went 4(3)-1 and made 3 successful defenses of his titles. For his 4th defense, he was up against Martinez who had not tasted defeat since February 2000.
Going into the fight, Pavlik had notable wins over Bronco McKart, Edison Miranda, Marco Antonio Rubio & Jermain Taylor (2x). On ther other hand, Martinez had commendable victories over Adrian Stone & Alex Bunema.
Martinez got off to a good start using lateral movements and pinpoint shots to win the early rounds. Pavlik was cut above his left eye with a right hand.
The Ghost came back to haunt Sergio towards the midpoint as he found his distance and managed to land a number of clean punches on the elusive Argentinian challenger who went down in the 7th from a short right hook.
However, Martinez regained his momentum and began to land accurately again in the 9th and opened up a horrid gash above Pavlikâs left eye which resulted in heavy bleeding. In the 10th, he also reopened the cut above Pavlikâs right eye (from the opening round).
The cuts troubled the defending champion for the remainder of the fight.
Maravilla fought with renewed vigor at the sight of blood and won the last 4 rounds decisively as he was able to land almost at will against the courageous Pavlik.
After 36 minutes of action, Sergio Martinez was crowned the new WBC, WBO & The Ring Magazine Middleweight Champion via UD12 with scores of 111-116, 115-112 & 115-111.
This was Sergio Martinezâs career defining moment as after 13 years as a pro he finally won world titles in the ring, and became the 1st Argentinian fighter in 40 years since the legendary Carlos Monzon to become World Middleweight Champion.
Back in November 1970, Monzon won the WBA & WBC World Middleweight Titles via TKO12 over Nino Benvenuti in a victory named Fight of the Year by Ring Magazine.
Monzon went on to become 1 of the longest reigning World Middleweight Champions; retaining the WBA & WBC Crowns for 6 years, 9 months, 9 days where he made a combined 14 successful defenses of both titles. He defeated notable oppositions in Gratien Tonna, Denny Moyer, Fraser Scott, Jose Napoles, Tom Bogs, Tony Mundine, Tony Licata, Bennie Briscoe, Jean Claude Bouttier (2x), Emile Griffith (2x), Nino Benvenuti (2x) & Rodrigo Valdes (2x).

Prime Sergio vs mid to late 30âs Hopkins would have been one of the greatest middleweight fights of all time.
You are on drugs....
@@outdoorrn2980 Nah heâs fine
Martinez vs Canelo wouldâve been dope too
Wow you think Martinez is on Hopkin's level REALLY
@@wilfredjones4042 I feel like Iâm their prime, Martinez wouldâve beaten B-Hop đŻ
Martinez will go down as one of the most underrated of all time great middleweights
He was terrible.
@@outdoorrn2980
You're an idiot. He didn't lose between the Margarito fight when he was lacking experience, up to the Williams loss which he then avenged with the amazing KO. He was a two weight champion and the number one middleweight in the world. The injuries he sustained are what finished him, he was completely shot when he lost to Cotto.
@@outdoorrn2980 Man, you're fucking blind, did you know?
He was good; not great. He had that little streak from 2010-2012 but he built his record off of a TON of bum bashing and struggled when fighting anyone with a pulse. Williams II, Pavlik and Chavez Jr are his signature wins and Chavez Jr damn near got him at the end. He got real lucky to be gifted a draw against Cintron because he was getting handled in that fight. I think Martinezâs fans think more highly of him than his resume reflects and there is nothing wrong with that as win or lose, he gave us memorable fights. I myself ranked him as an A level fighter. Not quite âelite,â but certainly more than B level. Not underrated though, his resume is just nothing special. I think his own following overhyped him a bit, as did HBO. I can name a handful of middleweights who are accused of âbum bashing,â that fought much better competition than Sergio Martinez.
@@outdoorrn2980 Give the man his credit pussy
Thanks man. Fights get forgotten despite all the highlights, but we all need fresh eyes on old fights.
Ofcoz
Always wanted to see Canelo vs Martinez or Martinez vs ggg
Boxers dont come back from major knee problems. He out boxes GGG if he is healthy.
His old now.. maybe he lose or knock out
@@aimelunio4337 martinez retired tho so idk now
@@Carlos-od7jr Actually he isn't retired.
I was surprised at this myself. He had won 2 fights in 2020 by TKO.
@@IWanderedAsACloud are you serious I'm sure they weren't televised on TV
Martinez might have been as good as GGG. very underrated fighter
No, he literally wasnât. And Iâm no GGG fan by any means but Martinez was not as good as GGG and heâs damn sure not underrated. His resume is just a little short. He had 3 1/2 year hot streak where he was a dominant force, compare that to the streaks of Mayweather, Pacquiao, GGG, Canelo; Martinez was not fighting on the level of these guys or any pugilist considered âlegendaryâ by status.
@@supakid3128 he got very old to the elite level of boxing. The guy had a difficult and very interesting story to get where he got.
If he could not get past Cotto, he would not have got passed GGG.
@@mickypoole9226 he was too old dumbass
I don't think he was THAT good but his two fights against Paul Williams were legendary.
Check out Martinez vs Margarito when they were young itâs a good fight!
Cotto would have been knocked out if he fought this version of Martinez

Your insane. Cotto has defense and great skills
Miguel was smart to choose to fight an injured Sergio Martinez and Sergio was smart to donât turn down the $$
@@omarreyesortiz5641 This is boxing fan make believe. Cotto has the better resume and the head-to-head win. Deal with it.
Este martinez hubiese lavado el piso con miguel cotto
Cant believe how flat footed pavlik was
Yeeeeessss!! Can you do canelo vs ggg 2
Sergio's stamina was otherwordly. Barely sweating in the 12th round.
Wasn't that way against everyone though, which is why I think he didn't get the decision in the first Williams fight. Personally I had him winning 7-5, but Williams' pace absolutely knackered him down the stretch. He looked like he could go down for good at any moment in those late rounds and the judges punished him for it, even though he was still doing good work.
@@donjohnson3888 wasn't Sergio a late replacement with a couple of weeks notice? He probably didn't have a full camp for the fight.
martinez was just masterful in this fight. He turned Kelly's face into a bloody mask. He beat him to the punch so often it was ridiculous.
Martinez had that crazy down the stretch fitness, Kelly didn't
Look at pavlik waiting for decision đ€Ł so cute
In every Martinez fight he made the HBO commentators eat crow, they were always bias against him.
That was 100% not a knock down, that was a trip. Really bad decision from the ref. SM was great in this fight. I heard that KP was drinking too much during times of his life, which is a great shame. Imagine what KP would have been without the booze.
I was shocked that they had Pavlik as the favorite. I made some good $$$ betting on Martinez.
Kelly pavlik wasnt bad. He was alright
best middleweight of all times is martinez
Lmao Hagler would floor this dude in 5
Is Carlos MonzĂłn
Martinez beating the hell out of Kelly pavlik was so satisfying
A prime Martinez is one hell of a fighter..
Maravilla
Kelly Pavlik was a favorite of mine
Mine too. Humble guy. He lacked some footwork and flurry but he had some serious power and never backed down
Ya en esa pelea se veian fallar sus rodillas, que lastima.
After all, Sergio wins,in this fight he looks great,he prepared well, argentino brave.
when it was REAL. BOXING đ„. GOING TO MISS U. H B O. đ
I'm scratching my head because I don't remember this fight happening. Where was I at?
I went to this fight and Martinez cut Pavlik like in the first round. In the middle rounds Pavlik was showing why he was a champion but Martinez kept working the eye that was cut and kept circling him. Pavlik kept trying to keep the blood out of his eye but couldn't.
cool
Dont like Martinez style at all but what a good fighter with balls of steel
Pavlik is a true champion, straightforward, and technically outstanding, no wonder that the others (world champions) did not want to compete against him
They did. They all just beat him. Hence why the best name on his resume is Jermaine Taylor đ
@@lobsterblacc9478 Yes Taylor, technically strong, psychologically weak
@@lobsterblacc9478 âthey all beat himâ homie had 2 losses
Two losses never knocked great fighter
Keren top
Kelly Pavlik can not hit moving target
Pavilion tired out man Martinez is nice as hell tho not taking that away
Wasnt even a knock down..Martinez tripped over pavlik foot..pavliks right didnt land
I always wondered about Martinez being on the juice
Sergio always looked like he was on the juice to me đđ©žđ
everyone can punch .not everyone can defend...not to say martinez is a defensive wizard but he just wasnt there to be hit
martinez vs alvarez
where was ggg during martinez time?

Pavlik couldn't see plus fighting a lefty is difficult.

Hey what's kind of fighting is that pavlik is the winner

Kelly won bet he wont fight him again
