The shark hunter Quint is one of the all-time iconic movie characters. People have been parodying and riffing on him for 45 years.
The "Indianapolis monologue" is legendary, changes the whole tone of the movie.
@@thomasgow9475 Love it. So classic. He died 3 years later driving to his hometown in Ireland. The budget of this movie was $9M and it grossed $472 so I'd say it was a success.
Anyone who hears his real English accent and sees him without his Quint make up wouldn't know its the same man.
JAWS was the first giant shark movie. Up until this time sharks in movies and t.v. shows were these dolphin sized fish, so It came as a shock to a lot of people that while the great white shark's length in the movie of 25 feet long was bigger than the record it wasn't much bigger and fishermen and surfers reported seeing them that big.
The biggest Great White ever recorded is "Deep Blue," a female shark that measured 20 feet long and is estimated to be about 4,500 pounds. She was spotted and filmed for the 2014 documentary Jaws Strikes Back on TV's Shark Week.
If you like crocodiles, you need to watch Lake Placid. 👍
Fun Fact:
Several decades after the filming of Jaws (1975), Lee Fierro, who plays Mrs. Kintner (Mother of the boy who go eaten), walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.
That's in very bad taste.

You mentioned you like the music...like an orchestra. The music was composed by the legendary composer John Williams. His other masterpieces include Star Wars, Superman, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and the list goes on. His genius in composing is as great as the the directors of these classic films. They all wanted him to work on their movies.
Funfact: Steven Spielberg was accidently able to film a shooting star with two diffrent cameras in this movie. He loved the look of it on camera so much that he digitally put shooting stars in every movie he made after.
The story Quint told about the USS Indianapolis is a true story, which makes Quint’s telling of it even more eery.
In 2017, My mom's friend let me watched the movie and let me just say that Bruce the Shark looked great for his time in the movie while being threatening towards the people on the beach and it was also brilliant that they used a animatronic shark along with using a real shark, Fantastic reaction Olavity.
In the novel that the movie Jaws is based on the shark is referred to as being seen often but because the much shark used in the movie kept malfunctioning and or not working due to the the movie being shot on the actual open ocean Steven Spielberg had to use various methods to indicate the sharks presence when he couldn’t use the actual mechanical shark to do so. The use of the yellow barrels was an extremely smart way to imply the presence of the mechanical shark when it couldn’t be used due to a malfunction. In short many things, especially a lot of improvising and risky firsts in movie making went into the making Jaws the blockbuster it became.
Spielberg was only 28 when he directed this film, and he only did it after the first director was fired and the studio flexed its legal muscle that bound spielberg to the project. The film production was plagued with issues, including the super-expensive mechanical shark that worked so infrequently, spielberg was not able to use it as often as he wanted. So, he shot many scenes around the shark when it was attacking people. That actually helped make those scenes more frightening, since you would rarely see a shark if attacked by one in real life.
Quints death always freaked me out when I was a kid seeing this, it still puts me on edge when he’s kicking his feet at the shark and then, crunch…😂 I love this movie.

Actually, when the mom asks the kid what kind of ice cream he wanted, coffee used to be a flavor back then. It was delicious! But I don't eat a lot of sweets/ice cream, so I just assumed it still existed.

Jaws is often referred to as the original Summer Blockbuster. The Monologue by Quint is considered to be the one of greatest if not the greatest in cinematic history. Part of what makes it so epic is the true story that Quints Monologue is based on, that being the tragic loss of the real warship USS Indianapolis.
I was a kid when this came out. I believe this was basically the first “summer blockbuster” to start that tradition. Back then a blockbuster like Jaws or Star Wars would continue playing in the theater for a year, imagine that!
Just curious, because I wasn't a firsthand witness. Was The Exorcist considered to be a blockbuster? It's something I've always been curious about. Thanks!
@@nightmaster5593 good question, I was barely old enough to understand the Jaws phenomenon, Exorcist was a couple years too early for me. I see it made good money, better than I realized, about 25% less than Jaws. Came out at Christmas time so wasn’t a “summer” blockbuster for sure. But seems to me in popular culture Jaws is just recognized as a new level of huge and paved the way for the real thing, Star Wars.
@@Big_Tex Right on! Yeah, I definitely recognize Jaws as taking the super hit movie phenomenon to a whole new level beyond anything achieved previously. I didn't realize The Exorcist was a Christmas release. Jaws remains one of my very favorite movies. And Star Wars is my favorite Star Wars movie. The mid to late 70s saw some spectacular movies being released. Close Encounters and Superman included. Thanks for the response!

Not seeing the actual shark for most of the movie made it much more scarier, as it left a lot to the imagination. Suspense at it's finest...

The mayor's the real villain here, shark was just a hungry animal 😉 And if there's anything the last two years have shown, its that people in power like the mayor are sadly very common everywhere 🤪

The mayor was just the spokesman. The newspaper editor, doctor and others were complicit in the cover up, and the town business folk were complaining about the beaches being closed. It wasn't really just the mayor.

This is a horror film. It builds the terror slowly but then maintains it until, "Smile you...."

Don't get mad at me, But I think John Williams Superman 1978 theme and John Ottman's Superman Returns 2006 theme are better than the Star Wars theme because Superman's theme is more hopeful, strong, and colorful instead of being dramatic.
@@fernandodelgado4329 i made no critique of the music just simply used Star Wars because I knew she was familiar with it. I am not sure she watched SUperman and if not the reference would be next to useless. She would have no frame of refrence.
27:19 "This guy might die." In the book, Hooper _did_ die. BTW, scuba tanks don't blow up when you shoot them, so that's some nonsense that wasn't in the novel either.
In the novel, Hooper did indeed die in the shark cage, and it would have been that character's fate in the movie as well. But a real shark ended up saving Hooper's life in the movie. For the shark cage scene, Spielberg hired a married couple in Australia to film a real shark swimming past a smaller mockup of the cage with a small, four-foot-tall man inside to make the shark look comparatively much larger. However, a real shark got tangled up in the cables before the little man could get inside the cage. The footage of the shark's thrashing about was so impressive that Spielberg kept it, and Hooper survived until the end of the movie.
@@galandirofrivendell4740 Yes, that happened, but that footage is obviously not of a shark the size of "Jaws." I've always wondered why Spielberg included it. Author Peter Benchley was on location while filming was going on. He pointed out that scuba tanks don't blow up when you shoot them, and that it wasn't the way his book ended. Spielberg responded "If I can hook the audience in the first 5 minutes of the film, I can do whatever I want in the last 5." He was right. Audiences stood and cheered in theaters when Jaws blew up, just like Spielberg knew they would.
Great reactions to this well made shark action film, Ola!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Most of this film was shot here locally on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. I saw this in the theater when I was 11 years old. This is the first modern day movie blockbuster. There were no multiplex theaters yet in 1975. Most theaters had one or two screens, and the most were six. John Williams did the music for this film as well as "Indiana Jones", "Star Wars", and many, many others. He is a legend!
Sharks may not scare you, shark movies may not scare you, but JAWS will. Glad you got to be scared. Much more fun that way.
A little trivia for you: The reporter on the beach is a cameo by the author of the book Jawa which this movie is based on. Also the kid wanting coffee is not smart. Coffee is an Evil smelling drink which is addictive as drugs.
'I wanted to see what happened when they reach land again, and the Chief reunites with his wife.' Back in the day films would end when the story did. It's only in recent times that films have adopted this idea of including extended epilogues, I suppose so that we can have an idea of what happened to the characters after the story ended.
I think that all started with Lord of the Rings, but could be wrong about that. Personally I turn most modern films off when the story is over, when the conflict is resolved, and I sure as hell don't watch to the end of the credits to find out if there's an after-credits scene (missed every MCU after-credits scene).
When the story is over, it's over. The characters only serve a function in the story, as fond as we may be of them, so it follows they don't continue the narrative once the conflict has been resolved. Being as young as you are you've likely become conditioned to modern films that break this fundamental rule all the time.
sitting here grinning at your opening, you kept saying shark movies don't scare you. They built the suspense perfectly in this, not showing the shark until so far into the movie. Part of that was all the problems they had with the mechanical shark they made (remember, its all practical effects not digital). Their fake shark kept sinking so they put it in as few shots as they could.
Your one of the best reactors. I saw this in the theater. I was scared to death, but I was 7 years old.

Jaws is honestly flawless..
The actress at the beginning wasn't acting. The Scuba divers that were pulling her down, pulled to hard and she got an injury and was in pain and almost drowned while filming that scene.

You have to understand in a town like that makes their living in the summer. I'd the beach is closed for long they could go completely out of business. For them it is a life and death matter.
I happen to live on that island of Martha’s Vineyard where Jaws was filmed, the kid who played Alex Kitner who was eaten in that movie runs a local restaurant called The Wharf pub

I have friends who live on the Vinyard and as you know almost everyone living there were used as background extras. My only complaint is no matter who's home you visit they put this movie on to show you every scene they were in. I have over the years seen this movie so many times it is no longer scary to me.

Smoking wasn't a trend in the movies it's how people actually were. There was a time over half the US population smoked.
It was a "trend" in the sense that movies were portraying real life. Just like almost no smoking in movies Now is a "trend" reflecting the move away from heavy smoking.

I have not read the book, but I have heard that it made clear that the Mayor was in deep to the Mob, and THEY didn't want the beaches closed.
You're absolutely right about smoking not being as big a "trend" in movies anymore. Nowadays, it's mostly common in MA 15+ and R 18+ movies. I guess that's because of how bad it is for you. They wouldn't wanna show it in movies that younger kids can watch. Just in case it gives them "ideas" But, I think there might be some lower rated movies with smoking in them these days. I don't know for sure though
Well it wasn't just a "trend" that's how real life was. In the 60s and 70s around half the US population smoked.(and it was still around 40% in the 80s)

Those weren't hippies. They were just young people hanging out on the beach in the 70's. If they had been hippies, neither of them would have made it into the water, as they would have been far too distracted by all the psychedelic drugs.

Coastal communities depend on one of 2 sources of income: periodic influx of money due to a fishing industry; or a seasonal huge influx of money for the summer months! Amnity Island is a tourist island on a tourist coast. Coastal tourism depends on beach, swimming, boating, fishing, windsurfing...

The uss indianopolis story was true, although I don’t think quint was there since he isn’t an actual person.
He was drunk so that’s probably why he was joking around with hooper. And he also stated to hooper “Well it proves one thing. Mr. Hooper, Proves that you wealthy college boys don't have the education enough to admit when you're wrong.”
I am 32 I saw this movie when I was 5 🤣🤣 ran right in the ocean after.

I've no clue why people in my local coast town (Seaside, Oregon) still surf and swim so far out...They've had quite a few attacks since Jaws came out, most of them were Great Whites (They favor our colder water )

I notice that most young reactors to the movie 'Jaws' get angry over the mayor and the town's people wanting to keep the beaches open calling them greedy. Obviously the mayor was meant to be controversial and to frustrate the audience but neither he nor the town's people are being greedy. In a resort community with no other industry your only source of income is tourism and in the northeastern United States where I live you're lucky to get 6 weeks of beach weather before it starts to feel like fall. The mayor was put in a bad situation because if he just closed beaches people would have basically lost an entire years income. I'm not saying it's you but a young person who doesn't have any bill's to pay has no understanding of how hard life is or how easy it is to lose everything that you've worked for your entire life. Don't think that I'm saying that it was okay to send people to their deaths letting them swim in shark infested waters but understand the difference between greed and the need to earn a living to survive and provide for your family.

My recommendation is that you go to six cups of coffee a day. Six cups is better than four cups.
Not scared. Excellent you may be a candidate to watch the J horror film Audition from 1999, I believe.
This movie is so creep, 99% of all people that try to watch it, walked out of the theater or turn it off if watching on TV, about 20 minutes before the movie ends.

The mayor made a mistake by not warning the public about the shark problem,but he was 100 percent right to keep the beaches open. Closing the beaches is not only a violation of the constitution,it would have destroyed the town. They should have tried to capitalize on the shark instead. Use it as an attraction.
No, they shoulda hired a Killer Whale to eat the shark.
Boil the jaws to get the flesh off. Then you can clean it up better and use the jaw for decoration.
Another shark movie that you should watch is Creature (1998).
As an extra scary detail of this movie, shortly after they finished filming, one of the extras, a woman who got off the ferry at 16:43 with a blue bandana in her hair in the lower left corner of the screen, was found dead on a beach nearby, beaten to death. Unfortunately they didn't keep the names of the extras they used, so she's never been identified, nor has her killer. She's called "the Lady of the Dunes" just because her body was found on the beach, a couple weeks after she was killed. They've dug her up three times to try to identify her.
