I met Mike Teevee and Veruca Salt in real life a few years ago; the actors who played them did a tour around the US, visiting the theaters in the Alamo Drafthouse chain. After showing the movie, they interviewed them, and then they let folks meet them in the lobby and take photos with them, etc. It was pretty fun. 🙂
That's cool. There was an anniversary television show about the movie that had all of the child actors (now all grown) in it.
@@bfdidc6604 I saw some interviews with them on a bit that came with the Blu-Ray, I think, but didn't see this TV show; I'll look out for it. 🙂
Amazing experiences ❤
Hollywood never knows when to quit, and after Gene Wilders performance here, they should have stopped making movie using this IP. Not that it was a perfect adaptation of the book, as I've heard the author didn't care for it, but because Gene owned this role. One of the few kids movies that may have been even better for adults, as this movie pulled no punches and was all the better for it.
Yep. Bankrupt of ideas
Agreed. Johnny Depp was too distant in his version.
But the remake was more true to the author's original vision.
You still have this version.
Jonny deep was better
I only last year realized that if Charlie hadn't gone back to get a candybar for his Grandpa, because he's a pure kind boy, he'd have never gotten the ticket.
Right
It was Gene Wilder's idea for Willy Wonka to make his appearance with a gimpy leg and then do a summersault and end up walking normally. The reason was, because from that point on, nobody would be able to tell whether Wonka was telling the truth or lying.
This was the only movie Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket) ever made. After this movie, he left show business to become a veterinarian.
After the success of this film, Ostrum was offered a three picture deal, but he turned it down. Turned out to be a good decision for him.
@@bluebear1985 I agree.
This is one of the movies that was on television annually during the 1970s. Growing up with this movie bonded a generation of children and endeared Gene Wilder to us as a beloved, if eccentric, uncle. Another great family movie we enjoyed annually, which you might enjoy for a reaction is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), based upon the 1964 novel by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond 007. (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also a musical, starring Dick Van Dyke.)
As someone born in 1966, a big Yes to all of this! Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka to me. When he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he kept it quiet because he didn’t want to sadden or worry any of his young fans who also came to know him as Willy Wonka.
And the screenplay for *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,* which is very different from the Ian Fleming novel upon which it is based, by the way, is by none other than Roald Dahl.
Yep, I was born in 1964, and I remember seeing this for the first time in the 70s on HBO 😅 This movie and Gene Wilder will always have my ❤
👍
As a kid I hated watching kids films like this 😂 . I preferred watching fun war films with my dad. Kelly's Heroes, Where Eagles Dare etc.
R.I.P To A Great Actor Gene Wilder, Still Miss You Always 😢
One of the greatest endings of all movies ever made, PERIOD!
One of my favorite movies when I was a kid, and as an adult, it still is. There's a lot going on here, and quite a theological subtext. And it was filmed in Munich, Germany, which is the second reason I want to go there someday. The first having to do with WW2's the White Rose Society.
same
I noticed this was filmed part in Munchen, after my first visit in 1985, you can see the towers of a prominent church, in a few scenes on the horizon.
Fun fact. Gene Wilder loved kids and was really good at entertaining them, but he also had trouble saying no to them. All the kid actors loved him and followed him around everywhere, so much that he couldn't get anything done and he didn't have the heart to tell them they were in the way. So the producers would periodically distract the children so he could sneak off and get some work done.
I saw this in the theater when I was 3. I had dreams about the boat ride for YEARS.
The Tunnel Sequence was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
@shainewhite2781 Hey it's you again🤣, "Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments" can be found in its entirety on my "Horror Playlist"
Fun fact. Roald Dahl, who wrote the book, wasn't happy with this movie adaption. The family wouldn't allow other productions until the Tim Burton one because it was more faithful to the book.
I remember the very first time I saw this, I assumed when Charlie found the last real golden ticket that the adults actually were trying to steal it from him so one of them would presumably give it to either a son, daughter, nephew, or niece of theirs.
Emma must be a mom given how she's so concerned about the fictional children's blood sugar🤣
I have been concerned for Augustus since I learned about diabetes from Wilford Brimley 😅
@@LordVolkov With him I'd more worried about "The Thing"😨👽
The roll gene does before opening the gate was improvised and so was the tunnel scene
The whole thing with him limping and somersaulting was actually his condition for signing up to do the movie, because after that nobody could take Wonka seriously.
@@drigerdranzer7514 yep
Actually the peom was lifted straight from the book verbatim but Wilder's creepy delivery was all him
@@whovianhistorybuff oh OK I didn't read the book but cool
This movie ranked at #74 in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo, cool reaction as always Emma, you take care and have a nice day sweetie 🥰❤️
This is like a Christmas classic from a child because it always came on around Christmas. I still watch it every year as an adult.. Pure Grace
Yea, this is bssically a Christmas movie
I think his office is very cleaver! the creator made everything half because he didn't want the end of the movie to finish in a boring standard office. he didn't think a man as creative as Wonka should have a normal standard office, so he made everything half! XD
i was terrified of the oompa loompas when i was a kid
🤣🥹🤪🥰
“Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker.” 😂
Uncle Joe spent 20 years bed bound with 3 other people then Charlie got a golden ticket he goes right into a song and dance number
All 5 of these kids remained friends to this day. Great feel good movie 😅
All the location work for this film was done in Germany. Munich, Bavaria and the Bavarian studios. Watching this, an adult can see that the architecture is very european. Of course, I didn't really think about that as a kid when I watched this the first time. I wasn't born yet when this premiered, so my first experience of it was on video later. This is a Gene Wilder classic! I love his performance here.
Charlie Bucket grows up to be "The Jig Saw Killer"... If you know you know.
The second part of the movie is called Snowpiercer
Walter Scharf composed the Wonka music. He also wrote music for the violent crime drama Walking Tall(1973).
What's crazy about the kids signing the contract is that the signature of a minor isn't legally binding. 😅
🤣😉
Grandpa Joe is a conman. Dude has been in bed for 20yrs while his family struggles. The second something good happens to Charlie, he's fine and ready to leech off him too. Then he tries to convince Charlie to do the wrong thing on multiple occasions.
Love this magical flick, Wilder in Young Frankenstein is top too
Wonka candy does exisit in America. Nerds and Everlasting Gobstoppers are the most popular.
If you like singing them, if you haven’t already reacted to it, you would like Little Shop of Horrors. The first musical I liked as a kid was the first movie I’d seen where the songs actually helped propel the story; Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. Great songs, comedy, and the manliest dance routines I’d ever seen.
You didn't notice that every time a child does something wrong they disappear and are never seen again
One of my favorite movies
You should watch " Chitty Chitty Bang Bang "
The actress that played Veruca this was her first job and they told her to sing and gave her bullet points and she did that song, she’s brilliant
The scene at 9:00 ...
Keep in mind the level of inflation between then and now. That £1 raise is more like £5 today.
That's a motivator
They put Violet into two halves of styrofoam. They hit her head on the door frame when they rolled her out.
This is the only movie Peter Ostrum made. He later became a veterinarian in upstate New York.
Thus proving that he really was the sweet kid he played in the movie.
35:07 Julie Dawn Cole, who played Veruca Salt, performed the song "I Want It Now" on her 13th birthday.
I just watched a lesser-known but still entertaining Gene Wilder (Willy Wonka) movie called "The Frisco Kid", which he made with Harrison (Han Solo) Ford.
The $3 million budget for the film came from "Quakers Oats". Hollywood changed in the 1970's. The "special Wonka chocolate bars" melted in the supermarket!!!
Omg Emma iconic movie. This was filmed in Munich Germany
21:20 - The whole limping walk and the somersault move was supposedly Gene Wilder's idea.
Richard pryor was a writer on blazzing saddles, him and gene wilder made a few movies in the late 60s early 80s, comedy fold all of em, my personal favorite is hear no evil, see no evil, gene wilder plays a deaf man and Richard Pryor plays a blind man and shenanigans happen
One of their best collaborations. I also think they are great in Silver Streak.
great reaction emma must watch this one once in a lifetime
My favourite film as a child. I remember when I was in year 4 at school we would get gobstoppers for 20 cents from the lolly shop. In America they’re called jawbreakers.
Thank you Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.
The photo of the Argentinian counterfeiter is actually Martin Bormann.
Always loved this film.
Emma
When Charlie gave back Everlasting Gob-Stobber to Willy proves that he was honest person in Willy's eyes. Main reason for Golden Tickets is to find honest kid that Willy show honest kid of his secrets. Depp's version was ok. I think that Tim Chalamet's Wonka would be awesome homage to Wilder's Wonka.
Johnny Depp's version gave off child molester vibes... 🤨
Now watch Snowpiercer (the movie) with the fun fan theory that its a spiritual successor to this movie.
I could see Tom Hiddleson playing this role aka Loki they sort of look alike
A 1 pound/$1 bonus in 1977 is worth 5 pound/$5 in 2023
One if my favorite episodes
It's become a bit of a joke now that Grandpa Joe sprung up when maybe he could have been working all this time. I think we're meant to feel that something magical has happened for Joe
Exactly. His recovery is a miracle made possible by his happiness about Charlie's good fortune.
I mean: a machine that was specifically designed to tell where the tickets were suddenly reprogramed itself with a sense of fairness upon activation. Of course it's magic.
My fave part of Grandpa's dance is when he clicks his heels😄
@@suebeawho6537 mine is "watch my speeeed"
Everything in Wonka's office is in half because he never finishes anything, Emma. He always leaves everything HALF-done!! 😉❤
I always ciphered that his Ex-wife got Half of everything!😏
@@nolimit7959 Great idea!!! 💡 That never crossed my mind!!! 👏👏👏👏
Childhood favorite 🎉
I also love musicals, hope you enjoy it!
this movie is based on a children's book
willy wonka greatest movie i saw on vhs i was 7 in 1991 huge fan of this movie
They are making a reboot of this movie next month.
more like a prequel
The reboot was in 2005, with Johnny Depp. It was awful. What's coming out soon, is a prequel, showing how Wonka got started.
Prequel tells the story of Wonka on how he became well known Candy Maker leads to Wilder's version.
One of my fav kid videos
The "South American recluse" who claimed to have found a ticket and it turned out to be a counterfeit -- they used a photo of Martin Bormann.
I love both versions of the book charlie and the chocolate factory.
Fun fact. The actress who played Vercua, Julie Dawn Cole, become a psychotherapist.
43:10 Actually Emma, for that time that was normal television, also this film is from 1971, there are bigger projects than Willy Wonka way before towards the early '60s, the usual champion was who else than Disney itself, just to mention a few… _The Absent-Minded Professor_ (1961) , _Babes In Toyland_ (1961) , _Mary Poppins_ (1964) , _Herbie_ (franchise 1968-80) , _Bedknobs And Broomsticks_ (same year Willy Wonka) . Not from Disney… _The Incredible Mr. Limpet_ (1964).
Wow!!! Now I know!!! Thanks!!! 😉
For some of the best of Gene Wilder, react to "Young Frankenstein" next
All the candidates for American president should have to do the same kind of morality test given by Willy Wonka. I’m guessing all the ones we had in the last 100+ years would fail
apparently the kids reactions were real, they hadnt seen the set
It's funny but back in the 70s when I saw this as a kid, I never questioned Grandpa Joe's sudden complete recovery from 20 years of bed rest. I guess it's just a fantasy story - - suspension of disbelief.
Yes. In the 1970s, this movie, and this factory, were just - - awe-inspiring.
The girl that played Violet worked on the PBS TV show The Electric Company.
And also on ABC-TV's daytime gothic soap
opera, *Dark Shadows.* Her name is Denise Nickerson, by the way.
She also did an episode on The Brady Bunch as Mike's boss's niece.
Emma
One of "Wonka Kids", Charlie Bucket played by Peter Ostrum stated that he will make a cameo in new prequel, Wonka. Interesting note is that Peter gave up movie career after this classic. Studio offered him 5 movies deal. He declined the offer. Because Peter wanted normal childhood. But Peter has an interesting career in medical field. Peter is licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and has a practice in state of New York. Peter and other "kids" do comic conventions especially last year's 50th anniversary of Willy Wonka. All except Denise Nickerson (Violet) attended these conventions. Nickerson died in 2019 at the age of 62. I am curious if other "kids" would make cameos in the prequel.
This movie makes me very emotional because it reminds of my childhood. I was 7 years old when it came off in 1971
IRL Charlie became a veterinarian for livestock
3:26 lolol
this was filmed in Europe. Germany I believe
I think you have to watch the 2005 version now! 2 completely different takes on the same story, and most people pick one they like but I think they’re both brilliant!
Fun one, Emma. This is such a wonderful movie. 😊 Thanks for sharing it!
Gene Wilder is one of my favorites...he's great in The Producers (1967). If you have not seen that film, it's a must see.
If you like Gene Wilder I would highly recommend The Little Prince (1974).
Ok!!! Thanks!!! 🙏
I'm amazed that people watch you watching things....ka ray zee :)
Hi Emma ❤Enjoy and have a Nice day.
My sister remember this when she is born in 1969 she was 2 years old when this come out she met one of the cast members
I want chocolate and I want it now! 🍫😅
Would you also make a reaction video about the 2005 versions of this movie?
Emma
One other "Wonka Kid", Veruca Salt played by Julie Dawn Cole. Cole is total opposite of Conceited Veruca.
Thanks, Emma! 🍫 This one still has moments that I think are brilliant and always make me laugh... and get emotional. ෴ Kudos to director Mel Stuart.
All the adult actors are dead,as is the child actress playing Violet Beauregarde 😢🎩
Hey Emma shout out from the US Marine Corps! I watched this movie so many times as a kid! Remember the tunnel scene in Thor Ragnarok. It obviously got that scene from this movie! I remember your reaction to Ragnarok it was awesome! Love watching you keep up the great reactions!

U gotta react to the 2005 version now
Of course, I Have to let out I was a personal friend of Diana Sowle, "Mrs. BUCKET" - she was very active in my church and the Washingtin DC theater world. She was so wonderful.
My wife and I love this movie gene did a great job as wonka despite the authors opinion
Wonderful reaction, Emma! Have a great weekend. You need to do more musical reactions.
speaking of musicals she should watch 1966's "a funny thing happened on the way to the forum" directed by richard lester who directed the beatles first two films. and 1979's "all that jazz" a semi-autobiographical film directed by bob fosse. or 1952's "singing in the rain." they're ALL GREAT FILMS!!
