Fun Fact: Gene Wilder said he would only do the movie if they added the scene where he walks out with a limp and a cane and then tips over like he’s about to fall and does a perfect somersault. The Director asked why and wilder said “because from that moment on nobody will know for sure if I’m lying or I’m telling the truth”.

@@Dacre1000 If they wanted to make a different film, then they could have... idk... made it like a sequel instead of having the same characters (for the most part). Like, i think it would have been better if they made either a prequel showing Wonka's beginning as a major candy manufacturer (which is touched on in the remake) or as a sequel where Charlie is looking for a successor as Wonka did before... That way they are both clearly different films and different life lessons... not a rehashing under a new name.

Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory with johnny Depp is stupid imo and it makes no sense whatsoever.
I tried watching it and got bored of it and that wasn't even half way through. You can't beat the old classic " Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory" with Gene Wilder, that's the original classic and by far the best one.
I grew up watching Gene Wilder play Willy Wonka and brings back great childhood memories. The homies girls are only a couple of years or so younger than me.
I know my favourite homie girl that imo is real Marriage material (that I would happily date aswell as definitely marry) , I'm talking about Ellie is now 30 and I'm 34 , so I know that the homie girls are not far off being born when " Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory" was released here in England, UK. In one of the "making of" videos they talk about the end of the movie. After Wonka says he will get factory and his family can now move in grandpa yells "yippie!". It wasn't working so they took a break and called the writer who was now on vacation. He was at a remote lake with only a community phone which he happened to be near when it rang. They said a new line was needed for the ending and on the spot he said the line,"do you know what happened to the boy.. " they loved it and immediately shot that ending.

Ladies, loved your reactions. This has been one of my favorites for years. I'm nearly 60 and it still gets to me. Not that I don't enjoy Tim Burton's version as well, but the original has a lot more heart. As a kid I wondered why Charlie won even though he also broke a "rule". Then I realized it was his grandfather's idea, and he was just following his lead.

Charlie won because he kept his promise to never tell another living soul about the gobstopper by giving it back and eliminating the temptation to do it in the future, thus remaining an honest loving child.

    • @tranya327
      @tranya327 Před 9 měsíci +3

Yes, Charlie and his Grandpa Joe did break a "rule." Obviously, that wasn't what Wonka's test was about. All five of the kids broke a rule or disobeyed Wonka's instructions. The test was more about: 'How do you respond when you come up short - when you're faced with the consequences of having broken a rule? How do you attempt to fix your mistakes?
Another angle: Wonka set up the whole situation as a rigged game from the beginning: Having them sign a contract that he knew no one would read... then surround the visitors with so much temptation that probably all of them would do something. Then, yell at Charlie and pretend to be a dick. Will you take the high ground, as Charlie did, or would you default towards, "getting even" as Grandpa Joe did? If Charlie and Grandpa Joe had never 'stolen' the fizzy lifting drinks, Willy Wonka would have yelled at Charlie on the pretext that they had violated some other rule. Would Charlie do the right thing, even if he (Charlie) reasonably felt that he (Charlie) had been treated unfairly?

What’s so funny about that scene is that the child actor who play Augustus actually was hungry he hadn’t eaten anything for a long time. So in that scene when he said that line “Let Me In I’m Starving” that was how he was truly feeling. It’s amazing what directors and producers do to get child stars to say their lines and have it come across as real.

Knowing that you appreciate musicals, may I recommend (if any of the Homies haven't already seen it) the 1968 film "Oliver!", a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist", which has some fantastic acting and great musical numbers in it. Gene Wilder (Willy Wonka) was such a sweet man. There's some interviews with him about this movie floating about. In one he talks about the little boy who plays Charlie and how sweet he was. He said he wanted to sit down and talk to him about having to yell at him before they filmed that scene so he wouldn't be afraid. Of course he couldn't because that would have potentially ruined the child's acting in that scene, but it broke his heart to have too yell at the sweet little boy.

But this version and Gene will forever be the most beloved Wonka of generations, he has so much heart and joy along with that slightly warped view of the world that brings his candies their life... My family watches this every year during the holidays at the end of the year, it's kind of a tradition and everyone including the children all love it... It always cracks me up when he berates the kids for their behavior with that detached meh emotion .."no, stop, don't do that".. just reciting the words with no feeling to them.. . hehehehehe

But there’s something about this film that felt more unique and honestly I feel if it wasn’t for gene wilder cast as Willy Wonka I feel like this film would not have been as good as it is without him because he delivered such a fine performance as Willy Wonka. 1. I first saw it when I was 10.
    2. Ronald Dahl the book author was a well-known LSD user. (you can see why)
    3. The Umpa Lumpas told the reverent portion of the story. Anything beyond that would have been unnecessary and overkill
    4. I suspect Wonka knew which children would win the tickets (lessons for our behalf) because Slugworth was at the scene almost immediately.
    5. Many people (especially women) seem to get a creepy feeling from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka.
    6. This is the only roll Peter Ostrum/Charlie. He's now a veterinarian.
    7. After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp, then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied.
that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know what's real and what's not.a" Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth."
    8. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎
    9. You can get away with anything in a musical.

When this story was written, people in England did have multiple generations still living in one household and chocolate was still a treat, unlike today were there is just too much of it.

This is a real classic, one of my favorites of all time! Thanks for bringing this back to me.
You mentioned that you really enjoy Gene Wilder. He's brilliant. You might also consider seeing "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein". Both are so much fun! He was also in "Silver Streak" with Richard Pryor; not my cup of tea, but it gets a lot of recommendations. I scanned back through 3 years or so of uploads and did not see reactions to these, so hopefully these recommendations are new to you.
During my scan, I noticed that "The Imitation Game" had a reaction. If you enjoyed that, you might also like "Hidden Figures."
Gene was married to Gilda Radner, one of the inaugural cast of Saturday Night Live. Can you imagine how much fun that household must have been?
