robin wright, the woman that played Buttercup, says that one day when they had a break from filming, the cast went horseback riding in the countryside. They got caught in freezing rain on the way back and weren't dressed for it. She says that Andre The Giant saw her shivering and he casually rested his enormous hand on her head like a hat. She said that not only did it warm her up and keep her dry surprisingly well, the action made her feel safe and protected. She says he was always sweet like that.

The Princess Bride is an actual book and I heard that in the novel that it explains that Inigo was able to survive the knife in the stomach and continue fighting because he kissed the miracle pill before giving it to Wesley. You do see him kiss it in the movie.

I saw this movie in the theater, when it first came out, in a group of ten friends from my restaurant job. Nine thought it was the most stupid thing they had ever seen. One thought it was the most brilliant. I was the one. I couldn't understand how my friends could be so dense.
It remains one of my favorite movies to this day. Absolutely beautifully crafted and performed along with being absolutely absurd. Thanks for reacting to this Emma.

@Emma Reacts - Mandy Patinkin [Inigo Montoya] is a superb stage/musical singer in addition to being a wonderful actor…he co-starred in the original production/recording of “Evita”. Andre the Giant, was an extremely famous wrestler…and so lovable in this film. The entire cast is loaded with famous actors…
Directed Rob Reiner…and music by Mark Knopfler [from Dire Straits]

Such a wonderful movie! The kid's initial reaction to an actual BOOK is fantastic! This is what happens every time you try to introduce an American to literature or U.S. history! The American age of illiteracy is here, as the success of films like Dune Part 2 and Godzilla x Kong demonstrates, ad infinitum. What an age in which to live -- the "Feelies" (right out of Brave New World) have arrived!

This movie accomplished a rare feat; it was TOTALLY 'Hollywoodized,' (completely altered from the original book to such an extent that they are almost two separate entities), and became a cult classic in its own right. There are tee-shirts, book bags, journals, etc. out with Fezzik, Wesley, Inigo, Buttercup, and a whole slew of people who will still conjure up Vizzini's 'inconceivable!' as a response to something in a conversation. The original book is absolutely amazing as well, in that it is, at its core, a fairy tale, without subtle comedy, and the campy, comedic overtones of the movie. Usually, 99.999% of the time I will say the book is ALWAYS better than the movie, (as I am an avid reader), but in this one, rare instance, I call it a tie. Both are equally amazing in their divergent treatment of the elements surrounding the same plot.

    @FeaturingRob Před 2 měsíci +1

As you wish, Emma! You are in for one of the most wonderful gems of cinema! A film that defies qualification or definition, but is so wonderful and warm. Enjoy your first time with this one!
    - The film was based on a novel by William Goldman, who also wrote the screenplay. Goldman had won two Oscars for screenwriting by the time the film was made. The inspiration for the story was very simple. Goldman had two daughters and when they were at an age when they wanted bedtime stories, he asked them what kind of bedtime story did they want. One of his girls wanted a story about a princess, the other wanted a story about a bride. Thus The Princess Bride was born...He published the novel between winning his Oscars, after winning for 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' (starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford) and before winning for 'All the President's Men' (starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman).
    - The grandson was the same actor who played The Mole in 'Austin Powers in Goldmember', Fred Savage. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he actually reprised his role in 'The Princess Bride - Home Movie Edition', a series of TikTok style clips put together starring huge stars acting out scenes from the movie in the most amateurish, home movie way for charity. It is hysterically funny and still really moving...especially the ending which had the director of The Princess Bride, Rob Reiner as the grandson and Carl Reiner, Rob's dad and an American comedy legend since the 1950s, playing the grandfather. Carl passed away a few weeks after that scene was shot. The home movie is here, when you need a laugh: czcams.com/video/29s1yU3nGkQ/video.html
    - If you recognize Westley, it was Cary Elwes. Cary was in Glory as Major Cabot Forbes. He was also in 'Liar, Liar', played Robin Hood in 'Robin Hood, Men In Tights', Jonas in 'Twister', and 'Ella Enchanted'. He wrote a book about the making of The Princess Bride called As You Wish, which I highly recommend if you want some fun behind the scenes stories.
    - Buttercup was played by Robin Wright in her first film, but she will also forever be known a Jenny in 'Forrest Gump'.
    - Inigo Montoya was played by Mandy Patinkin, an INCREDIBLE singer as well as an actor. He is considered one of the greatest interpreters of the songs of the late Stephen Sondheim, with whom he worked many times and became close friends with. Most notably Mandy originated the role of George in Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize winning musical 'Sunday In the Park With George'. He also won a Tony for playing Che Guevara in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Evita in the original Broadway production. Mandy has done a lot of TV (Homeland), a few films (Alien Nation, Yentl, Dick Tracy), and major theater productions like the original cast of the musical of The Secret Garden (as Archibald Craven). I believe that he still tours as a singer, singing lots of standards and Sondheim songs. When Inigo stabs Count Rugen for the last time, Mandy was very in the moment. Before filming, Mandy's father had died of cancer...so in killing Count Rugen, Mandy felt like he killed the cancer that took his father.
    - Andre the Giant was a gentle giant that the cast and crew of the film all adored. Every cast member has a story about him. Because Andre was a wrestler, Rob Reiner made an audio tape of all of Fezzik's dialogue to help Andre learn his lines, but also how to act the lines. Andre appreciated it, and considered The Princess Bride his proudest achievement. He died in 1993. To this day, whenever a cast member of this film is asked about Andre...they get very wistful and you can tell they miss him. He was 7 feet, 4 inches tall (2.235 meters) and 520 lbs (235.868 kg). He was also considerably weaker than you might think. There are a lot of scenes where they fudged Andre's strength with wires, platforms, or doubles.
    - The music for the film was by Mark Knopfler, lead singer and lead guitarist of Dire Straits.
    - One of the hardest scenes to film was Miracle Max, as Billy Crystal kept making everyone crack up. The character was mainly Billy just doing his impression of his grandfather, which he had done for years as a stand-up comedian. But Billy would sometimes improvise, and Mandy Patinkin would crack up laughing constantly.
    - Count Rugen, the six-fingered man is played by a very interesting man named Christopher Guest. Guest has worked many times with Rob Reiner as both a writer and and actor. They co-wrote Reiner's first film This Is Spinal Tap, and Guest played guitarist Nigel Tuftnell. It was the first in a genre called mockumentaries, comedy films that are like documentaries with highly developed characters and situations, but largely improvised dialogue. Guest is a master at the genre with his films Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, and A Mighty Wind to his credit as actor-writer-director. He is married to Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All At Once), and has been since the 1980s. He is also a member of the British peerage. He is Christopher Haden-Guest, 5th Baron of Haden-Guest, a hereditary title (which means in England he can be called Lord, and Jamie is Lady Jamie...but they do not do so).

Emma just so you know that is Andre The Giant's real voice. If you listen to any interviews with him or any of his pro wrestling promos you'll see for yourself.
The man was the most famous wrestler in the world during the 1970's and early 80's until Hulk Hogan became the big star.
Andre was born with a condition called Acromegaly. Which is a rare condition where the body produces too much growth hormone, causing body tissues and bones to grow more quickly which is why Andre grew so big. Unfortunately he wasn't diagnosed until his mid 20's. It also meant that Andre was not going to have a long life.
Andre turned his size to his advantage by becoming a wrestler and quickly became the biggest wrestling star in his native France. He would then go on to become a huge wrestling star across North America and Japan.
At the time this movie was made Andre's condition was starting to catch up with him and he was in a lot of pain constantly.
However other wrestlers have told how proud Andre was of doing this movie and that he always kept a VHS tape of this movie with him when he was on the road doing wrestling tours. He would often invite other wrestlers who he was friends with into his hotel room to watch this movie with him.

Actor Wallace Shawn was terrified of heights (even a few inches) he was having trouble filming the scenes. Andre gave him a hug ans said "i will never let anything happen to you". And he hasn't been scared of heights since.

The actual author of the book is William Goldman the screenwriter of many movies. He wrote this after he asked his two young daughters what they would like him to write a story for them about. One daughter wanted a story about a Princess, the other daughter wanted a story about a Bride, so he wrote "The Princess Bride" for them. BTW, a great William Goldman screenplay you would love is "Bitch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Kathryn Ross...

A true classic! Glad you enjoyed it. But wow, was that disjointed. The copyright filter algorithms must have been particularly problematic this time.

I love that big guy too, he was a pro wrestler, André the Giant. He was more than 2 meters high, weighted like 200 kilograms. I watched on TV once, fighting against 5, they won but had great trouble and had to hold him all at once 😅

In the book Wesley was described wearing blue jeans, and that blue jeans were around a lot longer than most people think. Hilarious! Butttercup thought Wesley was really dumb at first, and would picturing him saying duh when he was going to speak.

If you want some outstanding behind the scenes information you need to read Cary Elwes book :
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride. It is a short, hysterically funny read.

The actor is 47. He continues to act and is also a prolific director, largely for television.
