The thing to keep in mind about the Omaha Beach scene at the beginning is that in the movie, it took about 15 minutes for them to get off the beach. In real life, it took six hours. That's how long the carnage went on.

The movie portrays Dog Green. Division logs reported at 0641 that the entire first wave had foundered. Real advances up the heights didn't begin until nearly 1230 -- six hours after H-Hour. After seven hours,
a message relayed from the Navy at 1341 that "Beaches DOG GREEN WHITE RED are entirely clear of opposition" was entered into division logs.

Actually it was longer. The tide change and struggle to overcome the high beach and strongholds defense took almost 8 hours and change. Much of the ammo used to establish the "mission accomplished "OB" Omaha beach was from stripped gear from fallen brothers. My grandfather was a survivor of that assault.

The sniper 'Jackson' is rural country boy because the best snipers in the U.S. and worldwide (Russia, Finland) have been from rural farms or regions in their country. They grow up shooting rifles from a young age and are already excellent shots by the time they're teenagers. You can even look up female snipers in Russia and Finland to learn about farm girls that were incredibly deadly war heroes like their fellow male farm boy soldiers.

You have decades of experience getting to know and training snipers? Enough to make a claim like that? Or are you just spouting ``WAR LORE´´ in a CZcams comment because it serves your beliefs? I served in a Marine Corps unit for many years with a Recon platoon. Many of those Marines I used to party with in the beer garden went through Scout Sniper training, Airborne, SEAL, SERE, BUD/S, etc, and went on to operate as such for us, and they were magnificent at it.
Not a single one was some "farmboy yokel" whose "Grandpappy gave him a rifle to suckle on when he was a bebe." They were selected properly by marksmanship scores, desire to undergo the training, and many other physical and mental factors well-established by the Corps.
So don't come in here with your bullshit NRA-fed lookin'-ass mythology, trying to pass yourself off as someone who even knows what he's talking about. Sounds like you've seen way too many war movies, and unfortunately internalized them. It doesn't match reality.

Tom Hanks is the Captain and he is responsible for the men under his command. He can't show signs of stress or hesitation, he has to be the anchor. But everyone has a tell, like a tic caused by holding in emotions. His hand shaking is his tell, an uncontrollable tremor that is the only crack in his armor.

    • @hectorfernandez5542

The "anchor" is the NCO, the Sergeant... He leads by example and is responsible for the welfare of his soldiers, and offers guidance before, during, and after the operation; from the planing, implementation, to the after action review, as well as modification of orders in order to be able to carry out the mission successfully...

    1. Many WWII vets left the theaters because the first 10 minutes of the movie were too realistic.
    2. They guy they let go is the same guy that killed Captain Miller. That's why Upham killed him.
    3. Barry Pepper/Private Jackson was my favorite character.
    4. The story Ryan/Matt Damon tells he was told to make something up.
    5. There really is/was a USS Sullivans (DD-537) for the 5 brothers that were
killed on their ship by a Japanese submarine torpedo.

I’m glad you got to see this video. The opening sequence is so violent and brutal, many veterans say that scene is the closest thing to witnessing real war fighting.
I think it’s important younger generations like you see these atrocities hoping your generation sees there shouldn’t ever be war.
But like you said, war is occurring right now, and we’re seeing countries helping Ukraine to fight off an invasion. Sadly it seems there are leaders still bent on evil and causing pain to innocent people. That’s the unfortunate reason we still have war. To fight against evil.

The cemetery you saw at the beginning of the movie were people who landed during the invasion of Normandy and the following days who were killed - 12,000+ soldiers. Although the movie is a little loose with the facts, the portrayal was accurate enough to drive soldiers who had been there into PTSD shock in theaters. The movie reminds generations of the horrors of war that regrettably exist to this day.

"But he's Vin Diesel, how's he dead?"
Didn't you recognize the first Private Ryan? Nathan Fillion, star of Firefly, Serenity, Castle, and The Rookie, and villain on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The soldier who was stabbed to death, the same actor was Chandler's psycho roommate on Friends, and is the team's computer expert on The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah.
The guy playing the medic was Phoebe's brother on Friends, one of the villains in Avatar, and one of the stars of The Offer (the acclaimed miniseries about the making of The Godfather).
The first Private Ryan's commanding officer was Ted Danson, star of Cheers, Becker, The Good Place, and Mr. Mayor.
The American sniper who always prayed before shooting? That actor was a guard in The Green Mile.

The pennant in the window of Ryan's home had 4 blue stars on it. This signified there were four members of the family living there who were currently serving in the armed forces. If the star was gold, it signifies a member of that family has been killed in action while serving in the armed forces.

Saving Private Ryan is considered to be the most realistic war movie about WW2 ever made. Before it was relased, they showed it to a few veterans who had participated ot the D-Day. Some left the theater : the movie was so realistic it made them felt like they were going throught that nightmare once again.
The bloodbath that is the first "war scene is very realistic : Among the 5 beaches (Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Uta Beach, Gold Beach, Pointe du Hoc and Sword Beach) that were picked or the D-Day, Omaha Beach had the most people killed. The night before, bombers were supposed to bomb the bunkers along the beaches. Unfortunately the weather on Omaha Beach was terrible and the bombers totally missed their targets so when the soldiers arrived, they were facing fully operational bunkers filled with nazi soldiers using canons and machine guns.

Saving Private Ryan is not based on the Sullivan brothers. Fritz Niland became the basis for Private Ryan. He was dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day and spent five days in the French countryside, eventually earning a Bronze star in combat for taking a French. Robert Rodat first came up with the plot in 1994 when he saw a monument in a cemetery in Tonawanda, New York. The monument was to the Niland Brothers - 4 young American men who fought in the Second World War. When three of the Nilands were reported killed, the surviving brother - Fritz - was sent home. This inspired Rodat to write his movie. The average age of a U. S. troops armed forces personnel during WW II was 26 years old. Selective Service draft age range was 18 years of age to 45 years. The average age in Vietnam War was 22, not 19 as any think.
In real life with the Nilands, it actually turned out later that another of the brothers was alive - he’d been held captive in a Burmese POW camp.
Attempts to point out the "discrepancies" between the stories of Fritz Niland and James Ryan are often misguided, as Ryan is only based on Niland, and is not meant to be (or claimed to be) a completely accurate representation of him. The differences in the two stories seem to stem in part from the fact that the true story of Sergeant Niland and his brothers is often reported inaccurately. The character of Private James Ryan is a mixture of fact and fiction, with some of the fictional elements coming from the erroneous stories about the Niland brothers.
The German credited as "Steamboat Willie" who was released by Capt. Miller is not the German who engaged and killed Pvt Stanley "Fish Mellish during hand-to-hand combat. "Steamboat Willie" was in the Heer (Army) of the Wehrmacht and the other was in the Waffen SS which was a paramilitary organization and not part of the Wehrmacht. Originally, the SS uniform differed from the Wehrmacht uniform-whereas the regular army wore field grey, the SS wore black, head to toe (although later the SS did adopt field grey and often wore camouflage pattern uniform. American troops were brown and they didn't wear jackboots. The lightning bolt SS insignia can be seen on the right collar lapel of the German as he passes Upham and reaches the bottom of the staircase.
During the Battle at Ramelle, Upham became shell shocked and was unable to save a .30 cal team from a German soldier because he was too frozen with fear to do anything about it. He carried all the .30 caliber ammo at the battle of Ramelle, but was unable to do his job because he was always either pinned down or too afraid to move.
He signified the loss of innocence in war and thought that soldiers could be civil, but he later succumbed to the evils of war and made up for his cowardice when he shot Steamboat Willie for killing Miller even after the latter had shown Willie mercy earlier.
Not only did Upham represent the loss of innocence of war but he also symbolized the "Every-man". His illusion of neutrality faded when he finally had to pick and side and kill Steamboat Willie, his character revelation being how he finally understood the horrors of war. It became clear that Upham had turned into a hardened and true soldier because of the whole experience. Upham's rank was Tech 5 Corporal (E-5), that meant he was technician in a specialty area. His was maps and translator, he was not a combat infantryman and was never trained for front-line duty. Gunnery Sergent Hartman explained it this way in the movie Full Metal Jacket:
"It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill."

The significance of the date "June 6, 1944" when it appears on the screen is that was D-Day, the invasion of France during WW II. On 06 June 1944, Operation Overlord the invasion of Hitler’s “Fortress Europe” began. Thousands would die that day and thousands would be wounded. It was the largest amphibious assault ever undertaken and it changed the course of history forever. This began the Western Front of the war. Until that time the Soviet Union had borne the major weight of the war on the Eastern Front. In April and May 1944, the Allied air forces lost nearly 12,000 men and over 2,000 aircraft in operations which paved the way for D-Day.
The breakdown of US casualties was 1465 dead, 3184 wounded, 1928 missing and 26 captured. Of the total US figure, 2499 casualties were from the US airborne troops (238 of them being deaths). The casualties at Utah Beach were relatively light: 197, including 60 missing. However, the US 1st and 29th Divisions together suffered around 2000 casualties at Omaha Beach.
The total German casualties on D-Day are not known, but are estimated as being between 4000 and 9000 men.
Naval losses for June 1944 included 24 warships and 35 merchantmen or auxiliaries sunk, and a further 120 vessels damaged.
Over 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Normandy. This figure includes over 209,000 Allied casualties, with nearly 37,000 dead amongst the ground forces and a further 16,714 deaths amongst the Allied air forces. Of the Allied casualties, 83,045 were from 21st Army Group (British, Canadian and Polish ground forces), 125,847 from the US ground forces. The losses of the German forces during the Battle of Normandy can only be estimated. Roughly 200,000 German troops were killed or wounded. The Allies also captured 200,000 prisoners of war (not included in the 425,000 total, above). During the fighting around the Falaise Pocket (August 1944) alone, the Germans suffered losses of around 90,000, including prisoners.
Today, twenty-seven war cemeteries hold the remains of over 110,000 dead from both sides: 77,866 German, 9386 American, 17,769 British, 5002 Canadian and 650 Poles.
Between 15,000 and 20,000 French civilians were killed, mainly as a result of Allied bombing. Thousands more fled their homes to escape the fighting.

Depending on where you live WWII had been going on for sometime at this point. In Poland it started Sept 1939. Earlier than that in China and Ethiopia.

That's 145 tankers who drowned. Had even half of the tanks made it ashore, it could have lessened the casualties significantly.

Please watch Multiplicity. It's my favorite comedy. Starring Micheal Keaton and it's the same director as groundhog day and Ghostbusters. Highly underrated. Love your channel

This must movie is one if not the most historically accurate film evicting the June 6 1945 invasion and liberation of Nazi occupied France called D-Day in the U.S. It depicts the largest amphibious invasion in human history to defeat Nazi occupied Europe. The majority of the invasion force were the Americans and British along with free French, Poles Australians, New Zealand and some other nations forces.
They don’t teach this much anymore but the memory of those who sacrificed their lives to liberate the oppressed peoples in western Europe must be remembered by those who have experienced the longest peace in Europe since until Russia attacked Ukraine.
    Never Forget.

this movie is not just great becuase its cinematography or its crude and rela depiction of war, but because it marked a very define before and after in how we make war movies today. The way war movies, specially historic war movies and series is because this film. the world was not ready for it, it completely and utterly destroyed the romanticised look we had in war, and its gave a mere glympse of what it really was

Hey have you thought about reacting to the movie "GLORY " it's a civil war movie . I think it came out in 1989. It's really powerful and I think everyone should see it. Its deep controversial I think they should play it on tv sometimes. I think it will make people think about unity instead of division

From my perspective, Ryan chose to stay cuz he couldn’t live with himself knowing those men died for him & his brothers fought for a cause. So… they died for you to just walk away given their efforts they made? He & his brothers knew that they signed up for. It meant something to them in fighting this war. How is it meaningful? Because they’re part of the most pivotal moment in the history of the Constitutional Republic. If we fail, then our children & their children could be forced to live under an evil I can’t well imagine.
