He is this unforgettable terrifying motion picture experience.
Most scary part for me is that it takes place four blocks from where I grew up. I was only 2 when they made the movie but everyone talked about it. When I was about 14 I finally watched it. I could not go down those stairs for a very long time, despite it being the fastest way to M street. I was a full adult before I could go up or down the stairs at night. Ironically now those stairs are part of my exercise routine.
I grew up near Georgetown too. My father was a Professor of Economics there. My sister got married in the church at Georgetown and I love that campus. When my older brothers and sisters went to see the film, when it came out (I was only 9), they came home freaked out! The house was a buzz from that film, for a few days afterwards, I remember that. I didn't see it until I was 16. Such a great movie! Exorcist III is also excellent!
Ellen Burstyn was brilliant as Regan’s mom and should have won an Oscar.
@@derekharrison1582 Best acting performance I have ever seen.

Yeah, let's see if those currently "Hot" new Flavor-of -the-frigging-month movies that this reviewers mom prefers attain any classic status, like THIS flick, in another fifty years. Wana bet they wont? Movies of the SEVENTIES, in general, are pretty hard-edged because THAT was the first decade that had the R and X rating. Now those from the decades PREVIOUS to that one (60's, 50's, 40's, 30's) tend to be more censored and "tame".
I was the same age as Linda Blair when I first saw this movie at the theater when it was released. Love at first sight for me. I met her decades later at a Horror convention and it was one of my greatest thrills in my life.
You were allowed to see that film at 13 years of age? wtf lol
haha, yea my dad took me to the drive-in to see quite a few movies. Then he would fall asleep in the back seat. @@paulinegallagher7821
Likewise. My parents snuck me into a drive-in theater showing. They couldn't find a babysitter. I had nightmares for months but was in love with Linda Blair.
Very similar to my story. I met Linda at a celebrity convention in about 1999. I still have a video of it.

Being a '70's kid there were what I'd call the Trinity of "Possession" flicks from the '70's: this, "The Omen", & "The Amityville Horror." Scared the hell put of us. They were preceeded by late '60's "Rosemary's Baby", which played a role in true crime Manson Family murders.
....Oh yeah,, there's also a song called "Captain Howdy" by '80's Metal band Twisted Sister you might like?🤘😅

What an excellent day for an exorcism. Fun fact, they hired real hospital staff for some scenes and one of the radiologists actually ended up going to prison for murder. Friedkin went and visited him.
Friedkin's conversations with him became the basis for his movie "Cruising".
@@garybassin1651 nice. I’ll have to check it out.
The pendant that Father Dyas gave to Regan's mother at the end belonged to Father Karras. Bazuzu (the demon) only entered Damien when Regan tore it off, so it may have been protecting him. Hopefully, it will now protect Regan.
the Demon was named "Pazuzu"
Not sure if you had a typo o but it is Pazuzu - an ancient Mesopotamian demon. He was the King of the demons of wind. (Gust of wind when Ft. Marrin pulls the statue's head out of the small hole). Pazuzu would offer you protection from other demons - hence the Evil against Evil comment. The lore surrounding Pazuzu is fascinating.
@@edp5886 only offered protection if paid off like the mafia
Regarding the pills the exorcist took in the Iraq scene, nitro glycerin pills were once, and may still be, a temporary remedy for a weak heart.
The story is really about Father Karras. He's a guilt ridden priest who is questioning his faith.
But then he is presented with something he can't explain with logic and in the end he commits
the ultimate act of love by sacrificing his life to save someone he never met. Remember,
he never met Reagan, he only met the demon.
This movie still stands up and it’s still so fkn creepy. A masterpiece! 👊👊👊

I love when people react to this version of the film instead of the theatrical cut, this one is far superior 👏
Almost 50 years after being released, "The Exorcist" to this day still remains the measuring stick to which all other horror films are compared.
That is legendary.

The demon, Pazuzu, was the Mesopotamian demon of the west wind. According to legend, he was so evil that even others demons were afraid of him.
Blatty's novel was inspired by a true story of possession that happened to a young boy in the 1940s. The exorcism took weeks. The hospital where it happened has since been torn down and the boy grew up to become a scientist who worked for NASA although no one there knew of his story. He passed away several years ago.
This movie came out the year I was born, and when I was 5 years old, my older sister was going to watch it at our house, so our mom told me to stay upstairs until the movie was over because it was too scary for me to watch. Of course, I eventually snuck downstairs to watch it, and I saw the part where Regen’s head spun around the first time. It scared me so much that I couldn’t run away, but I noticed that my younger brother was beside me, and just as terrified as I was. Our mom got mad at us, and told us to go to bed, but we were so scared that we’d be possessed that we wouldn’t go until her and our dad put every cross we had completely around our bedroom. I refused to watch the movie for around 10 years, and I finally rented the VHS tape, but my mom wouldn’t let me watch it because she was afraid that it would release some kind of evil. I couldn’t even have the book in the house, either.
When the movie came out in theaters, there were so many stories of people passing out, vomiting, and running out of the theater, that ambulances were sitting outside many theaters, and there were also rumors that the number of people that thought they were possessed increased, as well.
50 years of greatness and controversy and this movie ranked at #3 in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo

25:12 Merin saw the signs that were shown to him while he was in Iraq, the devil statue, the mini devil head made of stone and knew he had to come back to the states to fight the demon he already exorcised from some one in Africa years before. so he didn't "just happen" to be in the neighbourhood, he came here on purpose, waiting to see who was possessed. a great reaction to the Horror of all horrors! 👍
Fr Merin did not arrive there for that reason, he was called upon by the bishops Karras went to when he requested if he could perform the Exorcism himself. They wrote to him, there is a scene where one of the young novice priests in the seminary delivers the letter to him.
I was 8 when I snuck into the theater with my friend and his older brother to see this. I had trouble sleeping for a long time after this. This film is pretty intense for an 8 year old even though I loved horror as a kid. I got to meet Linda Blair in 2018 and talk to her for quite a while. She's really sweet and of course I got an autographed photo of her as the Demon.
The spider walk down the stairs is always cause for an outstanding reaction 😆 👍 🎥
Hard to believe they edited out the spider walk scene from the theatrical release. However, the extended ending is something I can do without.
Friedkin didn't like the final result of the original spider walk scene because the wires were visible. When the director's cut / extended cut was released, they were able to use digital techniques to remove the wires, so he put it back in.
The music is similar to the ones in the "Halloween" series movies but the Exorcist was before the Halloween series was first shown on theaters.
Great reaction. Your mom is so wrong Some of the best horror movies of all time are from the 70s and 80s. Thanks so much.

Thank you so much, #Olavity, for uploading this awesome horror movie reaction. I love your content so much because it's absolutely amazing, and I really enjoy watching your reactions to different kinds of movies.
It was a demon, not the devil.
You can watch actual reactions of people watching The Exorcist for the first time in the 1970s. Some loved it. Others thought it was horrible. Some people left. A few fainted. You can find it by doing a youtube search. It was a much worse exorcism than shown in the film since in the book Regan kept urinating and voiding her bowels in that stifling room making the priests ill. Showing the art was an example the Regan was also the one who did the sacrilege in the cathedral.
that statue is based off of an ancient Mesopotamian demon known as pazuzu.
What everyone misses about the movie is asked by Father Karras while he and Father Merrin sit outside her room between the exorcism sessions. The whole movie is asked and explained there and earlier.
Father Karras asks, “…why this girl?” The demon had already answered this to Father Karras earlier. The demon wants to bring Father Karras to him. He also knows that Father Merrin will be coming.
The demon wants both priests. He sets the whole stage for the exorcism AND gets to kill both priests. He just used Regan for his own means.
The demon won!
Yes, both priests are dead at the end, but for Blatty, the author or the novel and screenplay, that isn’t the case that the demon won. I, too, for many years, thought the demon won. What other conclusion could be made?
But here’s the thing. Father Karras’ faith WAS restored. He saved Regan, a girl he actually never met (in her possessed form, obviously). He sacrifices himself for this girl and while his friend Father Dyer reads him his last rights just before he dies, it’s clear his faith is restored. That is the indication that the demon didn’t win. You can research this if you don’t believe me.
The demon mocks Karras and calls him a faithless swine. His faith is restored at the end and he will go to heaven and be at peace, something he didn't feel in life as he was tortured by his lack of faith and guilt over his mother dying alone. Fr. Merrin was old and had a heart condition. He most likely knew the strain of this exorcism would seriously harm his health but he did it anyway. I dont think the demon cared about getting Karras, he was incidental and he only used his human frailty to attack him, like Merrin said he would. The demon knew that an exorcism would reunite him with Fr. Merrin, the only priest qualified to do it, and thats why he calls his name before he even gets to the house.
Well, after watching the sequels I wouldn't really say that the demon won. He's desperate to get Merrin and that's his goal but he didn't make it at the end.
Not true father karras sacrifice himself so he wouldn't kill regan.
@@thesolitarymage5995 the demon in the novel was enraged Merrin died. It wanted to possess Merrin so the demon lost
Incredible film. It won Oscars for Best Writing & Best Sound Mixing, and 4 Golden Globes for Best Screenplay, Director, Supporting Actress and Best Motion Picture! You should see the direct sequel, which is Exorcist 3, which came out in 1990. It is excellent! There was another sequel but it did not turn out well, called Exorcist II. That sequel wasn't good. But really great reaction, dear! The Exorcist is also based on a true story.
Sorry I was bored from exorcist 3. Any way this October will be the drect sequel to the first film. But many years later. The other sequels that came out never happen now!
This movie traumatized audiences all over the world when it was first released.
In one showing, a pregnant woman in her first trimester saw this with her husband. (Either during the film or immediately after) the woman began having severe cramps. She was rushed to the E.R.
She lost the baby.
It was diagnosed as a "sympathetic miscarriage" due to intense stress.
I stood in lines around the block for hours to buy my ticket, sat in a sold-out, cold, & dark movie theatre, and the entire audience squirmed, squealed, & screamed throughout the movie. I heard NO LAUGHTER. This was 1973 (more religious people back then vs. than today) & movie fans NEVER saw ANYTHING like this before. It was a once in a lifetime experience for ALL movie fans. The tension was extremely INTENSE, unlike watching The Exorcist in the comfort of your well-lit, safe home. The devil was unable to enter Father Kerras until the devil tore it from his neck. So, it is best Regan has this necklace & her mother should make certain she always wears it, to protect her from the devil coming back. I enjoyed your reaction & watching this iconic movie with you. Thank you.
I saw this movie in a dark theater with a babysitter I didn't know. I was 9 years old. It was 1973. There was nobody sitting behind us. Just darkness. I was literally petrified and couldn't move or take my eyes off of the screen. I was traumatized for years after this. Finally, in about 1988, I saw the movie for a second time. Then a third and a fourth and so on. It became my favorite movie.
There's a short doc on CZcams called The Cultural Impact of The Exorcist. It has footage of people leaving the film, upset, queasy, a few even faint.
When I visited Georgetown the first place I visited was the Exorcist Stairs. :)
They used to broadcast this movie on CBS every Halloween. The satanic panic was nuts.
You're one of the few people who recognized the atmosphere, and the lack of soundtrack. That's what made it extremely intense, as you feel like you're actually there with them at times. The Entity, and The Changeling from the late 70's/early 80's are excellent viewing for horror fans. The Entity was based on a real person. Enjoy both if you get chance to watch them.
The Devil's greatest trick is convincing you he doesn't exist.
Nefarious?
And humans greatest trick is convincing others that God and the devil do exist, and one of the ones who doesn't exist wants you to believe in him, and to believe the other one who doesn't exist actually does but doesn't want you to believe he does.

After 50 years, The Exorcist is still the most shocking horror film ever made. They set the bar for movies about demon possession and no movie since has come close.
27:10 Even though the actor playing the older priest knew the foul dialogue Regan was about to say, when the young actress delivered that line, he stood there frozen in place,, silently for a few seconds and then said "umm...cut." He apologized to the director, he simply found it so jarring and shocking to hear that young actress using such horrible language. He forgot his lines.
In the book, it was regan who put the crucifix underneath her bed during a period when the demon was not in control. She did it in a desperate attempt to protect herself. The demon deliberately planned to lure father merrin in a "rematch," after it was defeated by merrin when it was exorcized from a boy in africa ( which nearly killed merrin). So, it possessed a girl of a famous actress, which led to the initial contact with father karras, who served as the means to bring merrin to nrw york for a final battle. But by now, merrin was older with heart issues and died due to the stress of the ritual. The demon at first, was perplexed when merrin collapsed, but realized later it had "won" and began to laugh. Its final "victory" was when karras challenged the demon to possess him. Symbolicly, once the demon ripped the Saint Christopher medallion from karras (his faith in God was relinquished, and his protection was gone), the demon entered karras and exited his body right before karras committed suicide. BTW, the green muck regan was spewing was human bile (it was actually a mix of green peat soup and oatmeal). This is the only movie that freaked me out as a kid because it seemed that evil was more powerful than good and won in the end.
The St. Paul medal is seen in the movie the Exorcist.." it represents "St. Joseph Pray for Us." A St Christopher medal is not used in the Exorcist. It represents Faith & Safe Travels.
I’m sorry but I’m not sure where you got the notion that Regan was the one who put the crucifix under her pillow. That’s simply not true nor is it in the novel. It remains a mystery how it got there, but according to Friedkin, it was probably Karl. But nobody knows. Furthermore Father Merrin was lured to Georgetown, Washington, DC for the final battle, not New York.
@@johnboy32064 i read a report that blatty said it was likely karl, but no quote was given. I also read blatty, reportedly during a different interview (again, no quote) , said the book could be viewed by readers as inferring regan placed it there believing it would protect her but was simply another act of blasphamy by the demon to lure the priests into the fray. And ok, dc. not ny.

This film is based on a true story! This film came out way before the Emily Rose film. The necklace in the end is for protection. It protected father Karras before he became possessed.
FYI; This film is inspired by an actual Exorcism: of a boy, in the 1950s, in St. Louis, Missouri.

I'd recommend Exorcist III as a follow-up. It's good complementary story to this one. (Skip Exorcist II, it's BAD).
He *is* a psychiatrist, but if he hadn't also been a priest, he'd be a famous & rich psychiatrist. His religious order put him thru med school.
That wasn't hypertension medicine, it was nitroglycerin tablets for chest pains due to his heart condition.
The demon wasn't the devil. It lied. And that wasn't Damien's punishment, it was his sacrifice: he gave his life to save Regan's.
Why would keeping a saint's medal to protect her from evil be a mistake?
People in the audience screamed, vomited, fainted, and ran from the theater. Ambulances were called.
Still freaks me out even today. I always watch The Exorcist and The Shining on Halloween. They don’t make movies as good as in the 70’s… like Jaws, The Poseidon Adventure, Deliverance, Network, etc. etc.

Still the best horror movie of all time, even up for a best picture Oscar! The mom was actually permanently hurt from her fall in the bedroom. The girl actress has to have security for almost a year after it came out because people were convinced she was possessed! It's basically a rematch between marron and the demon he exorcized previously that almost killed him, but Marron won. The demon is an old school Persian demon, that ruled over much of the old northern Persia/Iraq area, a demon of mischief and possession. I don't remember it's name but before that name , it was called Ishtallah, then before that Marduke, before that, Baol!! lol, yep. From what I remember, the popular "Campbell" pea soup didn't have the right "thickness" and "consistency."🤮
@@joshuah9109 We used to one of the Anderson's restaurant, factory locations near San Diego in Carlsbad that's a bunch of different restaurants now with the windmill still there. There's still a couple in Central and Northern CA. I remember there being something there about how Anderson's was used in The Exorcist. Way to advertise your soup.

That's kinda hilarious.
"Anderson's Pea Soup, proud sponsor of the vomit used in THE EXORCIST. Father Karras may have hated it, but we guarantee you'll love it!"
-or-
"Anderson's Pea Soup, your mother sucks our soup in heaven!"
😋 We always ate Anderson's over Campbell's and our mom usually added extra ham.
20:08 when she was flung backwards she did hurt her back and that was the take they used. She wasn't acting with that reaction.
Gorgeous reaction. You remind me of Salma Hayek. I'm sure you get that often.
Never, but I usually get (you look like young Wynona Ryder) a lot.
I think you would like Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands ( 1990 ) with johnny Depp and a red haired Wynona Ryder who looks just like you when your hair was red
You have to see on the big screen !!
Olavity is already giving us a hint into the next reaction video. The mysterious switch game laying on the bed.
What is important was the child was saved no matter how powerful the adversary . Both Priest sacrificed their lives was to save the child. And to offer once life to save others (to follow Christ's example,) is a sacred act which even the demon cannot win.
It is also a story of the Priest whose faith was weakened bec of the tragic death of his mother. But later his faith was restored when he realized that he doesn't want the mother to experience his tragedy.
The medalion (St Joseph's icon) is a Catholic thing. The image is a reminder to the faithful to think of Christ /God. In the opening scene on Iraq it implies that the demon has existed during primordial times. The presence of the medalion in Iraq implies that in the past Christian faithful has used the medalion as a protection against Evil. It should be noted that the possessed child/Megan has to ripped it off from the priest before the evil dpirit could possess him.
Also the presence of the medalion in Iraq suggests that the battle between Good and Evil was the present even in the past.
33:14 We were a simple people. 🙄
eyy almost 10k !
Great Reaction to one of the best horror movies

When Karras asks Reagen what his mother's maiden name was, she pukes all over his face. Names. Do you know why we have first names, middle, last, etc? It's not just to distinguish people from one another. It's to fool evil spirits to get you. The more names you have the better.
Might wanna rethink the demonic being all in the head
Yep. There's no shortage of people who have had problems with demons because they played around with witchcraft or new age spiritualism.
It's all in the head...she's a bright girl...
I bet you didnt see that coming
Green like Bile (Google bile)
This movie went out of its way to shock and disgust. It was one of only a couple of movies I walked out on. Why green? Maybe she had pea soup for lunch?
It scares the farts out of me
I have something very important to tell you. Possession is real. Humans can get possessed by demonic spirits. This is true and so is the movie . It's based on a real case. Like the case of Emily rose. 😊
I like your accent
People lost it in 1973.
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Hi there
It’s not “one of the scariest moves ever” it is the scariest move ever according to the tracker. People were throwing up and passing out in the theaters they had to have ambulances on standby when it was released the day after Christmas…
If you want to be scared, watch a regular horror movie. If you want to be scarred for life, watch "Terrifier" 1 & 2. 😯😲😳
The Terrifier series is, for this generation, what the Evil Dead was for an earlier generation.
