  • I needed some storage space so I built me a 8x16 foot shed most of the wood I used was the lumber I milled with my sawmill let me know what you think and if you have any questions in the comment section.

    I think you did a very good job. It's a nice size. And you've inspired me to build one like it myself instead of procrastinating and thinking I can't do it. Thank you.

    That's a nice shed! If you can get a firewood splitter in a shed without be cramped the size great as well. Have to say it's refreshing to see a hammer and nails being used. Nice job!

    For those of you watching, much easier to put your shingles up on/near the roof than continually climbing up and down. Reduces the amount of risk using the ladder too 🙂

    Nice looking shed. How did you cover the area under the eaves so that birds and other animals don't get in. I'm not sure if I saw you do that. Also, why didn't you alternate the floor boards so that the ends wouldn't line up. It would add strength to the flooring. I think. 🙂 I would add storage and access to the roof section by putting down some plywood and maybe some steps. Thanks for the video and reading my two cents.

    • @jlistdiy
      @jlistdiy  Před rokem +1

    Did you use precut, 92 5/8" studs. Just my guess based on you 8' siding overlap over part of bottom plate and ~1/2 of lower top plate. I'm getting ready to start my 12x16 w gambrel roof but wanted to use full 8' studs for a bit more headroom between main and loft level. But it occurred to me that if I use full 8' studs and 8' exterior sheet goods, then hold down the T-111? covering face of bottom plate, I'm going to have ~3" of the wall including plated not covered by the sheet goods. I have to think on this more for impact as I go up. Nice Job!

    • @jlistdiy

    It was great to see one man building a shed but really no help without the measurements of the rafters and overhang. Lacking information to build it

    • @renski8976
      @renski8976 Před rokem

      It's just a video man.
      I mean, it's not rocket science. 8ft span, half of that is 4ft. Most common roof is 7/12 pitch, so use a framing square and mark your 2x4s and measure. You can make it even easier by Googling a rafter calculator and punching in the given numbers, ridge beam width, what length overhang you want, the span of the roof, and it spits out measurements for your rafters.
      For example, the rafters here are 5ft 1 5/8 in. Use the 7/12 pitch on your framing square to cut your bird's mouths and voila. Then, assuming your shed is 12ft long, cut about 4 more rafters using your template, use a 2x6 as your ridge beam, cut it to 13ft, and mark each end in 6 in, then notch about 2in up from the bottom. (essentially making a 2x4 overhanging past the wall) you can either make a kingpost to hold up the ridge or have someone help you hold it up while you screw in the rafters (make sure to mark 16" oc for the rafters and use a speed square to make a straight line much easier to do it before the ridge is up. Once those 4 are holding it up, you should be able to see if it works well. It should if the calculations are correct. Once you figured out that it's all good, make about 15 more and use the template after you're done cutting, should have about 20 in total for 16 in oc. Then mark the top plates of the walls 16" oc for your rafters. After installing the rafters, your roof is getting heavy. Make sure your walls are level and throw like four 5 ft collar ties on your rafters 3ft oc (just make them even across) this will strengthen your roof)
      You should know the rest from there. Use your plywood to make sure your roof is square. Etc.
      Good luck, hope this helps.
