I don't know anything about crawling so when I was looking to buy my first crawler the Gen 8 looked like a good deal for $300. I'm glad I decided to buy it. I've done a couple things to it in the past few months that were recommended in a video on this channel. Transmitter upgrade, new servo, softer foams, tuck in the rear bumper. I already had another transmitter and servo so the only money I spent was on the foams. Will probably do a few more upgrades in the future but for right now I am very happy with the truck.

Francis... There's a brand new trick for the SCX10 III, if you're interested.
Changing the Transmission Gears to those for the STRAIGHT Axle Gears (outlined in the Manual) will give nearly the SAME Gearing as the TRX-4 in 1st Gear.
I'm STILL NOT a SCX10 III fanboy.... But I think it deserves a more even fight, with available stock parts. 😉
I would still remove the Roll Cage. It's pointless and you can barely see it anyway.
Like the Element... I don't think it's been given the fairest opportunity.
And I DON'T mean you - I mean the RC press in general.
The SCX10 III has had a LOT of engineering. Like the Element, it's potential hasn't been reached yet. 😉

This can try to make up for a little bit of that. All my rc crawlers each have there own little nitch. Some can do some and some can’t, it definitely amazes me what some can do and my comp trucks can’t. Great vid, but I think there are a few things to keep in mind. First, all the videos are from different date. Maybe TRX4 and Gen8 the same date but def SCX 10 III from different date. There should be a proper shootout once we can get out again. Second there should be compared with the same tire all of them (Hyrax). And as you said, maybe removing the spare tire on the Defender and maybe also remove the rear bumper as the other two barely have a rear bumper and better departure angles. I think that would level the field a little including weight. Love your vids.

Good news is the footage for all there are from the same afternoon.
Agreed on the other points. The Defender though is showing off that it can keep up given any handicap. Here is the stripped down Sport. czcams.com/video/udUfDHc8u3w/video.html

That SCXIII is no shelf queen. Look at those scratches and dirt keep up the great reviews. I have Gen8 Axe and SCXIII both are great crawlers.

I have been debating on the gen 8 vs the trx4 sport, this past week the gen 8 dropped to $270 now is that a more enticing deal? Do you think with the price difference I can put some mods in it to be similar to the trx4 performance or just buy a trx4?

Just added some proline flat irons, and a Club5 servo relocate bracket to my Gen 8. Wow, that's all you need for this to turn an climb with the trx4 Blazer.
They will both be getting a stronger servo, but are a ton of fun.

This was an excellent video, this was exactly what I needed to see. I've been going back and forth on a few different models, and this has finally sold me on the Gen8. I was leaning heavily toward it anyway, because of the looks and the price tag. But knowing it performs this well is icing on the cake.

Glad it was helpful! Yes, with its low price, there is an opportunity to get the dialed Axe edition. Or leave money for upgrades or the college fund.

Hello Francis, I'm thinking of buying my first RC crawler but I can't decide between the TRX 4 defender and the red cat gen 8. I feel I would go for the gen 8 axe edition just because of the upgrades I feel I would do anyway. Which one would be your go to between TRX 4 and gen 8 axe.
    Thank you.

I feel like the gen 8 won. I may be biased tho. But I do think that the trx4 had a busted leg trying to compete while wearing the tall defender body with the rear spare tire.
