Best Budget RTR Rock Crawler: Redcat Gen 8 V2 or Sendero HD?

  • If you're looking for the best RC rock crawler, watch this video! We compare two of the cheapest, big-name RTR models to see which is the best crawler: the Element RC Sendero HD or the Redcat Gen 8 V2!
    Prefer a kit build instead of RTR? Check this out: • Best Pickup or Truggy ...
    Correction on tools: you'll need a 1.5mm, 2mm and 2.5mm hex driver to change the motor. And possibly a soldering iron if the replacement motor doesn't come with bullet cables already attached.
    Rock Test Scores & Notes:
    Sendero HD: 3:09, 6 rev, 1 gate, bonus. -19
    Gen 8 V2: 4:30, 8 rev, 1 gate, bonus. -17
    Scores may be close but the Sendero HD did it much faster!
    Also, I had a technical problem with filming and have had to show a worse run here for the Gen 8 V2 than it's best. This run had 3 gate touches! Did you spot them all? I did a few runs with the Gen 8 V2 and took the best score (-17) for the comparison. The score for the video here would have been -7. It was not an easy course! (But that shows you how good the Sendero HD really is!)

    If you can only have one and one only.. I would think the redcat gen8 would be a far better pick. I have realized having limit choices would work better if you choose the one with the most options. You can turn your redcat into a great great crawler or a fantastic trail basher .. and for that alone I think it should get the only one pick award

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 9 měsíci

      You can say the same about the Sendero HD, and the Gen8 will never crawl as well as the Sendero, if you modify them both or leave them stock. The redcat has durability over the Sendero, I think, and portals, if that matters to you. They're both great choices anyway!

    The visible frustration and audio at the half-tire was hilarious!!!
    For me, it's really a no-brainer, going with the Sendero... as much as I do a lot of trails, but as you say, the Sendero will do trailing, but once you find a rock or anything fun to climb, it'll be ready for action!
    Looking forward to each video on this channel, as usual. It seems the numbers are really starting to come in, which I'm really happy, as it's really deserved!

    Another awesome video. I love my Gen8v2 yes its my first trail/crawler but so far it does what I'm looking for. I live in Virginia, USA. I've got alot of woods around the house that I drive on and I'm working on a crawler pit with rocks I'm getting from a creek that runs through my property. I've upgraded the esc to the HW 1080 added aluminum portal housing and +12mm wheel hex. I'd love to see a wheel and tire upgrade cause they do lack a bit in that department.
    I've also lengthen the wheelbase..it helps alot but you do have the clean up the wheel wells some but with the size of the body it's got the room

    Very nice video 👍 I have the Gen 8 V2, a modified Sendero, Trailwalker and Carisma Brat. The Gen 8 is super fun, I added heavyweight wheels, brass axle ends and covers.
    The Enduros are very capable. My Sendero has a lot of low brass, modular aluminum wheels, Rock Beast tires, 11% overdrive, full metal trans rotated with a carbon fiber motor plate, metal frame braces, different bumpers (low pro rear) topped off with body lights, bumper lights + 6 accessory fog lights linked up to a GT-5.

      If you want to go further than that (and you really don't need to), a stronger and faster steering servo and BEC to match would be next. Also replacing the radio with something more configurable (GT5 at the cheap end, perhaps a DX5 Rugged at the nicer end) - but it's all unnecessary if you do that first video's worth of things!

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před rokem

      It's a very reasonable comparison. Pricing is different to when I bought a year ago and they're now a lot closer in price here. The Gen 8 V2 has an unrelentingly tough drive train, same as the Sport! And that light kit is a great deal, yes!

Eventually I plan on a Sendero as well, when my wallet catches up. As a sidenote, I took the stock Redcat tires added hair donuts and steel beadlocks then put them on my wife's SCX10II and they work really well. Maybe it's the donuts, maybe it's the chassis? • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 2 lety +1

      It's a fine all rounder. However, there are better choices for a general use rig:
      Ecto is faster and similarly capable.
      Gen 8 V2 and RGT Pioneer are tough all rounders that can tow well and have a tougher body than the lightweight Sendero.
      Trx4 Sport and Axial Base Camp are heavier duty crawlers with great trail character too, though you'll pay more than for the Sendero.
      The Sendero is a crawler that can do trail driving too. It's biased toward crawling with its light weight body, slower motor, gearing and overdrive. It's a wonderful machine and I'm sure you'll love it if you get it.

    Gen 8 v2 or axe edition? Or trx4 new bronco? Those are the 3 im considering Hmmm 🤔

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 2 lety +2

      New Bronco for all round capability but the Axe edition isn't far behind. If Gen 8 V2, go the Axe over standard if you have the funds, it's an excellent system. I have 3 Axe systems and so that's an easy decision!
      Personally, I'd go trx4 then axe then standard V2, in that order. The trx4 will be more expensive because it's steering servo sucks and you'll want to replace that. You might also find the hobbywing Fusion 1800kv to be a great upgrade choice for the Bronco and for the Gen 8 V2 std edition, if you go that way. I have the Fusion 1800kv in my trx6 and it is ample, so it'd rip in a 4x4.

    • @anthonytuccillo6274
      @anthonytuccillo6274 Před 2 lety +1

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 2 lety +2

      @@anthonytuccillo6274 aw that's a good question. I've competed with the trx4 as the chassis underneath my class 1 rig and have won numerous local events with it. I like it for performance. However the Gen 8 V2 price is right and if you won't miss the locking diffs and two speed transmission, the Gen 8 axe would be a fine rig.
      My expectation is the trx4 would beat it on the rocks and be more fun with the moving parts it has, but I could be wrong. At the end of the day they'll both be great general use machines, so feel free to let your inner kid decide on what looks better and makes you feel something more than the other.
      If performance really matters first, TRX4 is the likely winner - apart from obviously the axe system being much nicer and more immediately, the rubbish traxxas steering servo, which will want swapping out soon!
      If you're really looking to buy and not upgrade anything, first, lol and good luck, I'll call the Guinness Records people if you're successful, but secondly the only real choice for buy-&-never-upgrade is the Gen 8 V2 Axe edition.
      Good luck, not an easy choice!

      @@RCTNT Thank you so much for the winded response! Much appreciated. You have really helped me in making my decision but also made it more difficult lol. I really love them both but I feel like the axe may be the better bang for the buck out of the gate. Love that bronco body though but that axe has the old school cool crawler look. I think I may just have to do the old fashioned flipping of a coin lol. In the end I will probably just go with the axe, the bronco is a beauty but for the price it should be better and factoring in the necessary upgrades its going to far exceed the price of the axe. Not doing any competition crawling so don't feel the need to upgrade anything other then small things like wheel weights, tires and such. Thanks again and you deserve my sub!
