Erik Kain of Forbes Magazine is back with another sober take on where Disney Star Wars is going and how it's being diminished.
‘The Acolyte’ Continues A Long, Tragic ‘Star Wars’ Tradition: Ruining The Jedi
    www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain...
The more Jedi we’re given onscreen, the less awesome they become. That’s not to say that young Obi-Wan wasn’t cool, or that I didn’t enjoy Darth Maul (the same rule applies to the Sith) but as more movies have come out and more shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka arrive only to fall flat, the Jedi have just gotten less and less compelling.

The Jedi & rebels represented hippies & violent radicals. Disney princesses ruined a few generations of women with unfulfillable fantasies. Pirates are murderous thieves. Worst of all, Indiana Jones was a statutory rapist. Kasdan's & Speilberg's objections kept most of that off the screen. Lucas pushed for it, thought it would be "amusing"
George Lucas: “I was thinking that this old guy could have been his mentor. He could have known this little girl when she was just a kid. Had an affair with her when she was eleven.”

I read a lot of people saying the Jedi were ruined by the Prequels - I disagree, though I do understand the logic. I think George was trying to emphasize how utterly evil and powerful Sidious was, and thereby show how easily any civilization can slip into tyranny via a protection scam. The Jedi were complacent due to their innate benevolence. This can happen to any benevolent being since the nature of positivity is to trust in the innate goodness of others. In other words, the Jedi couldn't see Palpatine's machinations, and that was the lesson of the prequels as stories.

Agree with most of what Erik said. It helps to fill out why the "feel" is missing. They seem to debase every single character.
    Lucasfilm has:
    - Management, rather than leadership
    - No sense of cost control or value proposition
    - Weak selection of senior creatives, and endless bureaucratic entanglements of same
    - Weak connection of budget and financing inputs to product performance and revenue
    - Poor faith reception of feedback
And there's also a downside... they're a division of Disney.

I think he's partially right. But the biggest issue isn't so much that we're getting "too much" Jedi; it's that we're NOT GETTING Jedi at all, but a bad interpretation by Disney who have it all wrong. Even the Prequels had great ideas but poor delivery, which is a fair criticism. But when it's done right, where listening to Yoda explain about the dark-side, about feeling the Force around you, seeing Luke shape himself based on that dogma...it's a religion. It's faith. When Luke is written right in the Expanded Universe, his superpowers aren't just there to be cool--he literally reflects on how and why the Force led him to a certain point, because he's a religious character. Married, not married, conflicted by his views of the Force and the limited information about the Old Order that remains--that makes it compelling. Jedi aren't Marvel characters with cool abilities, but Disney sure treats them that way.

  • @MikeSidious

Disney ruined the Jedi, the Force-they've ruined Star Wars! At the heart of George's trilogys was the "Man vs Machine" myth. A cautiotionary tale. Disney has ignored that completely which is ironic as we're currently at the dawn of the whole AI era.
The people creating Star Wars now aren't very bright. All they do is look at what's happening in the social media sphere and use that as inspiration. They have no vision and can't see beyond that. No wonder Star Wars is going down the sink-hole!

We would like to see the Jedi before the Clone Wars, not tricked into being soldiers by Palpatine, just keepers of the peace, like Qui Gon and Obi Wan were in Phantom Menace. The Acolyte makes the Jedi look less like they were tricked into protecting the Republic against the Separatists, and more like they were power mad dictators. Disney wants us to believe the Sith are not any more evil than the Jedi, which is Palpatine's temptation of Anakin. Disney uses Sith logic, hence being the Satanic inversion of Lucas' original message that even the good can be temped by the devil. Disney is the Devil himself.

Even in the prequels, the Jedi, the Seth everybody they were three dimensional. You could understand them problem with the acolyte and pretty much in my opinion the problem with the Disney sequel trilogy in a lot of the stuff that Disney is put out on Star Wars it’s two dimensional and it just doesn’t make sense and the reason it doesn’t make sense is because they’re trying to push an agenda is contrary to what the Jedi represent see if they had made the sequel trilogy from the Sith point of view, it might have made sense in in a way, but because they chose to try to say a darker tone with and use that as the backdrop on the light side, they missed the mark because that’s not what the Jedi about. Bob didn’t understand Star Wars. He saw a shiny new toy that might print gobs of money for his business and when he got it, he goes I don’t understand this because this has boy brand written on it. And to make it more compatible with his logic, he just tried to change it and alter it . And pardon the pun here transition a boy brand into a girl brand so he could understand it better the problem when you try to do that to something that is well established as a particular brand you ruin it. Look at Star Trek Doctor Who that they’ve tried to do for the.” Modern audience.” Because essentially what they’re saying is the modern audience is female and they’re wanting to take all those masculine tight male rolls transition into women.. when you do something like this two things are going to happen. You’re going to lose your core audience and you’re not going to attract the audience you want to attract which is the female audience. You’re gonna push them away too because Star Wars is not what they’re looking for. They’re not looking for light sabers they’re looking for something else they’re looking for Gothic towers are looking for that night and shining armor and stuff like that but you put a put a modern take on it or not, you start altering something specially, something as well. Establish altering it and trying to fit it into your little niche groups. It’s not gonna work. It’s going to fail. I hate Disney Star Wars!!!! I'm still pissed at George Lucas for selling it!!! He was more than rich enough for him and his family to be set for generations. It saddens me beyond belief that what I loved and grew up on has become this mouse house of absolute shit 😔

I have to disagree with the prequels and ahsoka as well as obiwan they are good. Love the prequels they were Lucas's visions. Obiwan was compressed to much so it suffered a bit. We got to see a struggling soldier in obiwan after all he saw sealing with ptsd and finding himself again.. as for ahsoka again some minor issues mostly with Sabine she was too powerful with the force once she tapped it. But aside from that I loved. We had connections with the clone wars and rebels as well as getting Hayden anakin back. I think if they get certain elements not interfering with the story telling in season 2 it will be great. The acolyte is absolute garbage on every level. It is forced adjenda and disrespectful to the heart of star wars.

The other problem is Jedi are just too weak now that is one of the issues with the prequels like that one master that jango shot with easy every Jedi should be almost a 1 man army go look at the Old Republic trailers they should be fast strong and throwing around 10 ton rocks flinging trees and using more obscure abilities like fire or invisibility. These Jedi are just lame.

It's not only the saturation of EXCESSIVE, TALENTLESS and unremarkable Jedi, but there's no effort earned through the process.
Meaning just about anyone can become one, and their duels are mire like street fighting, with little finesse.
Now, once displayed and carried with pride... lightsabers are an ineffective weapon whose novelty is unfortunately a lackluster cliche.
Pathetic cast poorly fight with them and their duals are so ridiculous, as lightsabers serve little purpose, since they no longer kill those wounded
because if stabbed with a lightsaber it no longer serves the purpose of destroying the enemy or putting to death the person who is pierced. They've taken something unique like the force and the beauty of Star Wars and cheapened it horribly.

Mae switching sides is plainly stated as she will turn herself in because she can tell the jedi who she knows aka the stranger. With that knowledge she hopes to see her sister again , and also states that there is no way even the stranger could find them in the jungle in time to stop her . When she sees the stranger mowing down the other Jedi she tries to run away and gets dropped kicked by a jedi (Jecki) who then arrests her and accuses her of murdering her family at which point she goes into a rage fights and tries to kill her. I don't know about you but if I was dropped kicked by someone accused of murdering my family by the same group of people who may or may not have murdered my family. I'd be distrustful too , call it copiuim call it call it shilling I don't care cause in the end I enjoy the show.

Disney own Star Wars, they can do what they like with it. Star Wars ended in 1983, the fall started with the Special Editions and continued into the prequel trilogy that was poorly acted and directed (the writing in Episode 2 where Anakin told the audience what we already knew about sand). The expanded universe books missed what the OT got right which was a great story told in a visually stunning format. A lot of the characters appeal came from the great actors from Harrison Ford to Mayhew, Daniels and Baker.

    • @sjdrifter72

You nailed it. The release of the so-called 'Special Editions' in 1997 was when the rot set in for the Star Wars franchise. It has been a complete downward spiral into insignificance and apathy by longtime fans from that point.

You forgot that the Prequels were good. Better than the expanded universe, so obviously. The EU had clone palpatine, alien invasion, bad luke, evil luke grandkids, and chewie getting killed by a falling moon. EU is just all over the place. Blue Tarkin was not a worthy villain.

  • @Erny_Module
    @Erny_Module Před 26 dny

It's the writing and the writers that's bad. Current writers are incredibly shallow and all seem to have their own agenda which is their prime motivation for their writing. It's not confined to Star Wars. Rings of Power, as is rightly pointed out, suffers from the same thing, and further afield, "Foundation" on Apple TV, and others. What Tolkien, Asimov and Lucas had going for them is that they are/were master story tellers, above all else. They spent time crafting the story and characters, and the worlds they inhabit, so the whole thing becomes a cohesive, credible whole that you become invested in, want to return to, and care about. They had good, original ideas. Go back to Edgar Rice Burroughs and his Mars novels - he single handedly invented most of the concepts in modern Sci Fi - read the original books - he tells really great stories, filled with new ideas that were unlike anything that had come before. I've read them all, and I can tell you, it's a crying shame what happened to "John Carter of Mars" and that we'll never get to see any more from that series. Star Trek: TOS even employed actual Science Fiction writers for the stories, and it shows - that's why it's held in such high regard - it's the stories.
But we are where we are - hack, agenda-driven writers, who have no care for the source material, employing the same tired and flimsy tropes over and over again, because that's either all they have, or what's required of them. It's no surprise that we've got the insipid drivel that is "The Acolyte" - it's depressingly predictable in fact.
Finally, a couple of paraphrased quotes:
"This show is both good and original - but the original parts aren't good, and the good parts aren't original"
    And Dorothy Parker:
"This is a show that should not be put aside lightly. It should be thrown aside, with great force".

It is incredibly obvious why Mae “seems to change her mind”.
Clearly previous episodes have showed us why characters are shifting priorities… BUT there is also information we don’t know which seperates each twins version of events the day of the fire… But show don’t tell right?? 😉😂🤡🤡

The Jedi deserve better Lucas whole point of the prequels to show fall of the Jedi they follow the will of the republic instead of the force they wasn’t vigilant when evil shows up sure they were flaw but they had good intentions in the end. We could have what Jedi meant to be in a sequel trilogy with Luke jedi order but Disney ruined them by killing them off screen.
