For 21-year-old British student Meredith Kercher, spending a year studying in Italy was a dream come true. But within months of arriving in the medieval town of Perugia, that dream quickly turned into a nightmare.
What unravelled next was one of the most polarising murder cases in Italy’s history, with one young American woman at the centre of it all - 22-year-old Amanda Knox.

Very true 100% agree.
Ah. New to true crime and crime stories. The introduction focusing on her told me more about her then Ive ever heard before. (NOT that I've ever cared to follow the media sensationalized BS which is almost akeqys 100% tabloid entertainment since "news" is America is a private for profit business). She sounded like an absolutely wonderful young women.
Having said that: it was MUCH more of a bio, background, and humanizing then most victims in true crime get.

There were many factual errors in this video including:
1) 4:53: Amanda was not "22", she had turned 20 the previous July.
2) 5:33: Meredith did not attend the Univ. for Foreigners; she attended the Univ. of Perugia. Knox attended the Univ. for Foreigners.
3) 10:33: Amanda did not see the blood on the bath mat before taking the shower as claimed here. Amanda reported seeing 3 tiny drops of dried blood on the faucet (not in the sink) and took a shower. She only saw the watery bloody footprint on the bath mat when she stepped out of the shower onto the mat. (See her testimony)
4) 11:27: It wasn't Filomena who "was worried that Meredith might have cut herself and gone out to seek medical care accidentally leaving the front door open behind her", but her friend, Paola Grande, who suggested that to Filomena. (see Filomena's interview with Mignini on Dec 3, 2007 pg. 40)
5) 12:42: "This time Amanda told her someone's been in your room. They smashed your window but it's bizarre it doesn't look like they've taken anything." Amanda never told Filomena that. It was Raffaele who told the police that because Amanda didn't see anything obvious taken, including a valuable camera and laptop in plain sight in Filomena's room.
6)13:07- "at 12:35 p.m. two officers from the
postal police arrived at number seven via Dela pergola"
This is what the postal police claimed, but the court records show that they arrived AFTER the 112 calls had been concluded at 12:55: the second 112 call at 12:54:39 lasted 57 seconds (Sollecito's cellphone log) so the postal police could NOT have arrived before then at 12:35. Why did the narrator not mention this?
Hellmann Report: "There has been much discussion on whether the call to 112 happened before or after the arrival of the Police, with it having been hypothesized by the Public Minister that the call to the Carabinieri at 112 had been made on seeing the arrival of the Police, just to validate the notion [tesi] of their innocence. Except that even the Corte di Assise of first level, on the basis of the testimony given by the on-duty Police personnel and of the times reproduced from the logs, arrived at the conclusion that these calls had been made before the arrival of the Police and unaware of their imminent arrival.
7) 14:16- " but strangely valuable items
such as a laptop, gold jewelry, a digital camera and designer sunglasses sat untouched out in the open"
No gold jewelry was 'out in the open'. Filomena's jewelry was in box in her nightstand:
QUESTION - and then the jewelry was kept where?
ANSWER - In a bedside jewelry case in the nightstand.

The Italian police will never pay enough for the damage they did to Amanda and Raphaele, but specially to Amanda. To this day she has to hear people saying “they have their doubts about her” even though she had jackshit to do with anything

Great coverage of this unbelievable case. The attitude of the Italian police and prosecution team was beyond words, just appalling. And the sloppiness of the investigation at the crime scene was shocking. Hats off the the defence team though, picking their way through the chaos and duplicitous 'evidence' presented to them. It feels like there's still nothing absolutely conclusive but, short of being able to preserve the crime scene and correctly collect the evidence all over again, it seems likely that they got their man in Rudy G. I did wonder about Rudy G's guilt after it was stated that Meredith could have defended herself against one attacker and therefore there must have been more, but then I remembered that she was exhausted at the time so perhaps could have more easily been overpowered by just one individual. One thing is certain though, it appears ridiculously easy to skew how the 'evidence' of a case will be perceived which seems to have been expertly done by the prosecution and Italian police, as I too was initially convinced, on what was being fed to us by the media, of Knox's guilt. What a nightmare for all involved, excepting the guilty party, of course.
Men can easily overpower women, karate training or not. People who have never been in actual fights or sparred in some sort of training really overestimate “karate” and other bogus martial arts, so it’s being brought up like it means something when it really doesn’t. It’s not going to give her any kind of advantage over a crazed criminal with a knife, probably high on drugs.
Karate isn’t practical. It’s for choreographic sparring. I’m an actual fight it isn’t going to help you much beyond having taught you to punch properly.
Women are overpowered by single attackers hundreds of times every single day of the year around the world.
The most common excuse that she couldn't have been is that she "knew karate". No, she didn't. She had a beginner's orange belt which is totally useless in defense.
To those putting karate as a means for defense, I say: correct. But it does make one strong. And fear for your life will also make one strong. And what about the evidence proving that she was held tight by the wrists with two hands while being stabbed (I heard that elsewhere).
Anyway, glad this is not my life, neither of those.
Sad for an obviously very nice young person's life being gone for kicks and fun, as I perceive it.

Be careful relying on what you 'hear' anywhere unless it's a credible source backed up with evidence. In this case, it's not.
The pathologists' reports mention no bruises on her wrists but bruises on face, neck, left elbow, right forearm, right hand, left thigh, right shin, over both iliac crests of the pelvic bone, vaginal area and skull. See Drs. Lalli's and Cingolani's reports.

Your perception is not based on the evidence. Can you explain how 3 people could participate in a violent, hand-on sexual assault and murder and only ONE of them leave multiple pieces of forensic evidence behind? Only Guede left his DNA in several place including Kercher's body, bra, jacket and in Kercher's blood on her purse, his fingerprint in her blood, his shoeprints in her blood.
Another great episode guys. Best true crime pod out there that doesn’t make light of the real cases for entertainment. Always expertly researched! So sad that I recognised Amanda Knox’s name from the press at the time, but not the victim’s name in this case.

Corrections
1. Postal police arrived at 12;57 not 12;35 - proof by garage video
2. Amanda seen bathmat blood after she showered
3. Bra was never cut anywhere, stitching was ripped.
4. Glass was never found on top of "moved" items(crime scene pics), but why would it matter, the burglar is ransacking, bizarre.
5. The rock was the size of a softball 2kilos.
6. No mud was present below the window.
7. Glass was inside below the window can be seen to this day, crime scene pics.
8.Filomena's window was below the road and any headlights.
9. Meredith never complained about Amanda, never happened.
10. RS never changed his story, he was forced to sign a document authored by police.
11. There was no bleach receipt ever found in this case.
12. Police thought RS shoes were a perfect match.
13. All prints found with luminol were unwiped and NEGATIVE for blood.
14. all profiles were omitted except for the five, RG RS AK MK PL
15. It rained on the 30th not Halloween.

Absolutely agree. Started to listen to the podcast with episode 3 and have loved it like no other ever since. Might it be possible the Anonymous Host invented focusing on the victims, giving them a true platform, making their stories known, where - at least at the time - anybody was just fascinated by the perpetrators... the trend in true Crime has since followed him, but is receding already, I feel, and I can't stand it anymore... victims hardly being mentioned by name, certainly not recognisable as individual persons, while killers are being fawned over as o so interesting people.

One of many qualities which I appreciate on this channel is the time that is given to the person murdered by the maniac. I have seen numerous documentaries signing the praises of A.K. Onl her I have learned anything about Meredith Kercher.
I've never heard anyone "singing the praises" of Amanda Knox, except the poor Italian guy who was in love with her. She just isn't guilty, no matter how much you want her to be.

I don't know how old you are but I lived through this case in real time when it occurred and there absolutely WAS a lot of social outcry *across the world* for a looong time, including many expressing praise for A.K bc she was being falsely charged with mrdr - ofc there were tons to people "singing her praise" bc they were trying to show the world she was innocent...
Bc of that, Meredith and her life lost so tragically seemed to have been forgotten, not mentioned, no longer part of her own story bc of how the police handled the case and how they treated A.K.
OP stating what their experience has been with this case being focused on AK all these years, and being appreciative of finally learning about Meredith is a very normal, decent, human thing to do.

@@chriscavy I wish I could but they all have errors, some worse than others. The trouble is that most of them are getting their information from other videos or off the internet and not from the court records. They often have little understanding of how the Italian justice system works when it comes to definitive judgments and judicial facts or what DNA can and can't tell us. Even the books on the case, almost all written before the final 2015 SC annulment or even before 2013, contain errors. Among the absolute worst are those 'online only' books (and I hate to even use that word for them) by Nick Van der Leek and the one by Barbie Nadeau who are both notoriously pro-guilt and error ridden. I'd suggest reading Amanda's and Raffaele's books as they are, at least, written by the two who experienced it. I do know that those who are pro-guilt will just claim the books are self-serving. As far as videos, stay away from "body language" experts who spout nonsense like the Behavior Panel. Scientific studies have shown it's unreliable and no more accurate at detecting deception than chance. But the worst of the worst videos are those by Robert Glass. She's absolutely nuts and she makes the most outrageous false and disproven claims. She's one of the worst pushers of misinformation and downright lies on the internet on this case.

All I can say is- Poor Meredith.....and Meredith's Mum and Dad must have felt totally robbed of justice.
They did feel robbed of justice because they totally accepted what the police and prosecution were telling them which is absolutely normal. Families of victims seldom side with the defense unless the defendant is also a family member/loved one. It's a normal reaction to believe those who are telling you they have identified the one/ones who murdered your loved one. Some families cannot accept a defendant's acquittal even after evidence proves they are innocent.

I think this is the most comprehensive study I've listened to on this case. Completely impartial and fair to everyone involved. I learned a lot of facts I had previously not known. I don't know we'll ever know 100% for sure what happened but I'm pretty sure Amanda Knox is innocent. The media have a thirst for sensationalising tragedy and this is one of the worst cases of all time, it's despicable the way they misrepresented Amanda Knox and also removed the focus from Meredith.
It's very common for the media to concentrate on the murder suspect rather than the victim during the trial, especially after the initial reporting of the murder itself.

Great video. That crime is suspicious in that they, Amanda and bf, may indeed be involved.
Literally zero evidence of that whatsoever.
I have noticed that many have always believed Amanda Knox was guilty, and I have come to the conclusion that all these years later, many STILL believe she was guilty of the horrific crimes, or had some input. And there are so many peeps here in the comments sticking up for Amandas' character, but noone has actually addressed whyyyyyy she initially implicated the bar owner at the beginning of the investigation, and later retracted it. THATTTTT fact alone has made me feel quite uneasy with her her character and testimony.
Really? In all of your readings on this murder you have never seen the words "internalized false confession", or anyone pointing out that when Amanda and Raffaele were "interviewed" that all of the cops forgot to press the record button resulting in no recordings of Amanda or Raffaele's interrogations. In my readings, I have seen extensive discussion on why Amanda would falsely accuse her former boss.
@@dsugar120 no matter the reasons, NO ONE would EVER falsely accuse another innocent person for murder. regardless, she is to this day, due to face court in 2024 for "slandering" the bar owner, which I think is rightly so. If someone accused meeeeee of such murder, i would do everything, like Patrick, the bar owner, to bring this Amanda to face justice for such an atroscious accusation

Piecing together relevant facts & timelines.
What i felt all through this was that amanda was a narcissist & quite manipulative & controlling
I quite believe she didnt like Meredith & felt competitive towards her.
She was a spolied girl & the number of times she retracted &
Re-issued her statement, each time different from the last was a telling act.
Meredith really does come in as a bit part player in this crime!
Amanda has made the whole thing about herself!
Narcissists are always the victim & never ever the guilty party
( i know very well as my 40yr old daughter is a high narcissist & life with them takes stainless steel temprament & nerves of a
Ninja fighter!)
Instead of counting herself lucky to have been given her freedom & life to live, & keeping a private life & getting on with everyday reality she had gone out on the public stage advocating this & that all about
AMANDA!
Its tough her family had legal bills! It happens! At least she had her life back
But narcissists dont think that way, they feed off attention & victimhood!
Making money from 2 books plus speaker fees, tv show fees..
Its irrelevant in a way (& im in no way disrespecting Merediths family or her memory) if amanda is guilty or not.
She would always make this about herself.
Her ex boyfriend was mightily lucky he got A Phonecall from her on their aquittal!
My own gut feeling is the 3 of them were responsible for Merediths murder & they all got carried away in the attack frenzy & excitement & add the possible substance intoxicants which hightened the scene.

That is far from an accurate description of the police investigation. In fact, it was so bad that the 2015 Supreme Court described it this way:
"An objectively wavering process, the oscillations of which are the result of glaring failures or investigative “amnesias” and of culpable omissions in [24] investigating activities, which, had they been carried out, would have, probably, allowed from the start the outline a framework, if not of certainty, at least of reassuring reliability, in direction of either the guilt or the non-involvement of the current appellants. Such scenario, intrinsically contradictory, constitutes a first, eloquent, representation of an evidential set of anything but “beyond reasonable doubt”.
The police investigation began with such immediate and false assumptions as "Only a woman would cover the victim" and that it was an "inside job". Immediately and falsely assumed was that the break-in was faked because "no one could enter the room through the window" (disproved by video of someone easily climbing to and sitting on the windowsill).
Immediately and falsely assumed was that there "was only glass ABOVE items" which was contradicted by testimony of F. Romanelli that glass was BOTH ABOVE AND BELOW and unsupported by police photos.
On day one of the investigation, Mignini refused to let Dr. Lalli, the pathologist, enter the bedroom to take the temperature of Kercher's body which would have given a more accurate Time of Death window which was hugely important to the defense.
The police failed to gather important and obvious evidence from Kercher's room for 6 weeks: MK's bloody jacket, her blood-smeared purse, her bra clasp. They failed to secure the cottage during those six weeks and photos show it was turned upside down with items from the bedroom being removed and moved around with no record.
Police video shows egregious and multiple violations of anti-contamination protocols by police on day one of the investigation.
The police misidentified the bloody shoeprints as belonging to Sollecito's Nikes, when they actually belonged to Guede's Nikes. It took Sollecito's father and uncle to prove they belonged to Guede's shoes.
Their claim the 112 calls were made after the arrival of the postal police was based on the parking garage video with a proven incorrect clock timestamp and Battistelli's claim he checked his watch upon arrival at the cottage when both the video and phone records prove that his claimed arrival time was impossibly early.
All these disprove the claim that the police did a "very thorough" or "excellent job" or "piecing together relevant facts & timelines".

What you "felt" and "believe" is called "confirmation bias". There is no evidence she didn't like or felt competitive toward Kercher. Even Giacomo Silenzi, Kercher's love interest who lived downstairs, testified the two girls had a "normal friendship". Not a single person testified that they ever heard a cross word between them or a negative comment or complaint made by Knox regarding Kercher. Patrick Lumumba is the source of the "Knox was jealous" of and "competing" with Kercher. But under sworn testimony when asked what he knew of the girls' relationship, he answered "Only that they were friends and nothing more."

Again, this is not based on evidence. A "spoiled girl" doesn't work 3 jobs in order to pay her way to study in Perugia. Nor does a "spoiled girl" work at a job she disliked during that time in order to pay her way.

At the time of this happening i was nursing my very ill mother who was suffering a terrible cancer & didn't have much time to hear about how all of this case was progressing.
I was worn out & exhausted & had my young children to care for

I don't Know wether Amanda Knox is guilty or not. But I know that when this heinous crime happened in the house where she was living the first thing she did when speaking to the police was blaming a black person she knew in Perugia that had absolutely nothing to do with the crime and now she is even an 'activist for the wrongly accused'.

I thought it was someone else with the same name when I searched and saw the word activist next to it. What a joke. And that person that supposedly killed Meredith couldn't have entered the house without a key , or let by someone with a key in. They said from the beginning that there was no forced entry and that the window that was broken was smashed after the killing took place. The other tenants had solid alibies, and I doubt Meredith would have left the dude in like he supposedly said. By how Amanda reacted in the beginning, it's obvious she knew more than she let out.

The hypothesis of the defense that Raffaele's DNA was transferred to the bra clasp by contamination because he was the one that smashed down Meredith door and due to the movement of people in the room in the following days is far less likely than the prosecutors hypothesis that DNA was here because Raffaele actually touched the clasp to stretch it behind the back of Meredith before cutting it with the knife, that also explains why the DNA was inside the bra on the clasp and not outside. The bra wasn't normally undressed, it was cut with a knife that was put between Meredith's back and the bra and then pulled strongly cutting the bra.

There is overwhelming evidence that shows that all three people, Guede, Knox, and Sollecito were there when the crime happened. Forensic evidence in regard to DNA, via blood and other materials mixed with Meredith's. A big clean up was done, lies upon lies, etc. In the end a lot of money and a big PR campaign that involved politicians from the US got Knox out. Sollecito had more than enough connections. Guede was definitely there, but may not have killed her.

Knox was rightly acquitted of murder. But regrettable she has profited from the case and enjoyed successes on the back of it given that she falsely accused Patrick Lumumba.
She was coerced into accusing PL by the police who wrongly believed her text message to him was confirming a meeting later that night. They had already decided they knew what had happened from that text and were hellbent on getting her to sign statements to that effect. Within hours she told the police in writing that she had been scared, exhausted, and confused and that she didn't think that the statements she'd signed was what actually happened. The next day she was even more sure that it did not happen and again told them so in writing. They ignored both and kept PL in jail until forensic evidence and a witness forced them to release him.

Rita Ficarra, Knox's main interrogator testified in court..which I doubt you've read...that she was scrolling through Knox's phone and found her text to PL: " 'Certo ci vediamo più tardi buona serata!'" (Ok. See you later, have a good night!). Ficarra testified she saw that as Knox meeting up with PL later that night. She testified she asked AK who 'Patrik'(sic) was as his name appeared as the recipient. Knox made NO mention of him before then to Ficarra. Within hours of her arrest, the Chief of Police Arturo de Felice announced to the press:
"Initially the American gave a version of events we knew was not correct. She buckled and made an admission of facts we knew were correct and from that we were able to bring them in. They all participated but had different roles."
The version of events Knox gave: She was at home with Raffaele all night.
So how did the police "know" that was "not correct" as NO forensics test results had yet been reported to them and no witnesses said otherwise.
Notice the use of the word "buckle" which means to bend or break UNDER PRESSURE after which she "made an admission" to what De Felice says the police "knew were correct" but they didn't as that NEVER HAPPENED. THEY were the ones insisting to Knox that she took PL there.

Illogical. She IMPLICATES herself in a murder instead of sticking to her story that she never went there because she was trying to DISTRACT from herself? The police didn't charge her with being merely being in the kitchen; they charged her with actually helping to hold Meredith down while she was sexually assaulted and then being the one to kill her by sitting on top of her and cutting her throat. But there is not a single piece of evidence that she was even in that room: no DNA, no fingerprints, no bloody shoeprints. CAN YOU EXPLAIN how that could be possible? Guede certainly couldn't avoid leaving all that forensic evidence of his presence in that room.

Not really. It's a pretty open and shut case: all the forensic evidence in the bedroom points to only one person: Rudy Guede. If the police had done a competent investigation before jumping to erroneous conclusions and then becoming tunnel-visioned and fixated on Knox and Sollecito, the only person going to trial would have been Guede. Instead, they doubled down and refused to admit they'd got it wrong when they arrested Knox, Sollecito and Lumumba because they were more interested in their Bella Figura (saving face).

Rudy Guede threw it from the parking parapet which was a few feet directly across from the window. It reflected a break-in at a law office earlier (second story rock thrown through window). Guede was caught by the police red-handed with a cell phone and laptop stolen from that office in his backpack just a few days before the murder.

It would seem the Italian justice system, at least in this jurisdiction, revolved around drama, sensationalism, wild imagination and creating a scenario to support a far fetched theory rather than following any factual evidence to lead them to the killer and what actually happened. The crime itself was only the first of many nightmares. I can't imagine a legitimate police force carrying on the way they did basing conclusions on speculation and their twisted perceptions of how this crime happened and who was involved. Police in the UK and the United States conduct very different investigations than the one depicted in this case. The Italian police botched this investigation from day one and continued down that path with blinders firmly secured to the families' and even their own detriment. It reminds me of "justice" in a third world country or dictatorship. Certainly not a modern democracy.

If you have a job one summer and another job the next summer and a weekend job during the school year you don't say you worked three jobs or earn that money; another kid who changed employers twice each summer and worked alternate weekends for two stores could truthfully say she worked six jobs. From the narration it sounded as if she went on one of those trips during high school and had already been to Europe with her family before that, being given her own menu by a waiter. I maintain the family had serious excess money and paid for her high school trip to Italy and wasn't she a lucky girl!

I never said she was still in high school when she worked. She wasn't. Knox graduated from Seattle Preparatory High School in June, 2005. She turned 19 in July. She went to Italy in the summer of 2007, age 20, after attending one year at UW.
She worked the 3 jobs the winter of 2006-2007 and saved $7800. From her book, pg 10:
“I’ve done all the math. I can pay for my own food and the extra expenses,” I said. “Remember I worked three jobs this past winter? I put almost all of it in the bank. I’ve got seventy-eight hundred dollars saved up.”

I remember this tragic case because Meredith was from the UK ....really sad story ....Amanda was and is innocent ...Italy is an amazing country - BUT the COPS are corrupt and useless - I got pulled over in Rome by a couple of cops who initially spoke Italian with me ...as SOON as they found out I was from the UK ...They took my license and disappeared for 20 mins before returning with a 60 Euro fine ... It went down hill from there ...I eventually got away from these vile corrupt people .. luckily it was not an on the spot fine :) - Needless to say I did NOT pay :) ... They got my home address from the car hire company ..and kept sending fines ...but by then I had cancelled my credit card :) - So they can whistle for the fine :) - If you ever drive in Italy ...be VERY CAREFUL .. They have hidden camera's specifically located to - ENTRAP unsuspecting drivers ...especially - TOURIST

She offered up information of her own accord, and was given a pen and paper. Of course the lies then continued, and haven't stopped since. I am suprised because Casefile is a decent podcast.

In fact, the police typed up the two statements in Italian and had her sign them. There is no record of the interrogation either written or recorded other than those two signed statements. There were so many factual errors in under 8 minutes of this recording that I stopped listening to it.
1) 4:53: Amanda was not "22", she had turned 20 the previous July.
2) 5:33: Meredith did not attend the Univ. for Foreigners; she attended the Univ. of Perugia. Knox attended the Univ. for Foreigners.
3) 10:33: Amanda did not see the blood on the bath mat before taking the shower as claimed here. Amanda reported seeing 3 tiny drops of dried blood on the faucet (not in the sink) and took a shower. She only saw the watery bloody footprint on the bath mat when she stepped out of the shower onto the mat. (See her testimony)
4) 11:27: It wasn't Filomena who "was worried that Meredith might have cut herself and gone out to seek medical care accidentally leaving the front door open behind her", but her friend, Paola Grande, who suggested that to Filomena. (see Filomena's interview with Mignini on Dec 3, 2007 pg. 40)
5) 12:42: "This time Amanda told her someone's been in your room. They smashed your window but it's bizarre it doesn't look like they've taken anything." Amanda never told Filomena that. It was Raffaele who told the police that because Amanda didn't see anything obvious taken, including a valuable camera and laptop in plain sight in Filomena's room.

Not that anything horrible happened to her, but the fear she felt as a young American in a strange country (not italy), with only limited knowledge of the language and culture. She couldn't wait to get home but still has a love of the language to this day.
