Jesse’s Tea Journey Episode 2
Black Jasmine
Today on my tea journey, I head to the Beijing Maliandao tea market! I show a bit of one of the giant markets and also my friend Wu Kai’s shop, where we enjoyed a very special black jasmine Liubao tea!
Liubao is a type of “dark tea” - what we in the West call black tea, the chinese call red tea, and what the chinese call red tea is very rarely sold in America. The technical name is “dark tea” but because I use the chinese name red tea I will also use the chinese name “black tea” to refer to the Liubao tea.
This Liubao is warm and smooth and dark and funky but it’s real specialty is the jasmine scenting process which Wu Kai shares in this video.
I cannot wait to get this stuff to you guys, it will be featured in my summer subscription box, so keep an eye out, or subscribe now and pre-reserve your bag!
As always let me know how you like this series. I spend a lot of time on them for a very small amount of views on CZcams but as long as I know people are really enjoying them I will keep making them!

"We're going to the tea market" ✍️🔥🔥🔥
Born and raised in Oakland I didn’t understand why I enjoy seeing this. Maybe after so many years of seeing pain and violence- tea supplies a safe space
Jesse, I found you on Instagram. You've sparked an interest in tea for me. Thank you very much for this awesome content. Please don't stop uploading consistently for us as I now have watched all your stuff. Really look forward to your videos. A good day to you, ciao.
So glad to hear!! Drink more tea and let me know if you ever have any tea questions
Wow, what an amazing place! I love how excited your friend is about sharing Chinese tea culture. You can clearly see his passion in the way he talks about tea. It was interesting what he said about the water, I have soft water here in Melbourne Australia so it has less minerals and I had been thinking about buying mineral water for my tea experiments. Now I'm rethinking that. I can't wait to see the tea pet shop, I want a tea pet of a traditional dog or lion I can't remember the exact name of the mythical creature.
He has made a point where minerals in water would clash with the soluable material in the tea during extraction but I come from the coffee world. In coffee, usually people would go for an interesting balance in minerals in the water, which will improve extract certain flavors out of coffees while masking other certain flavors. Think of it as something like an EQ.
So I‘d be very interested in having an indepth look into that kind of topic and how everyone in the tea world sees it
He has so much knowledge about the tea it really shows the care and pride he takes in his work Id love to visit his shop
How can I contact his shop located in the market 🙏
Love this kind of long-form tea content from China! Especially nice to see you interacting with some fellow tea friends! I'm excited to see more and further my tea journey :)
I had NO IDEA you can make Jasmine tea with teas other than green teas. In fact, in my head I've always labeled Jasmine tea as a green tea and now I feel immensely dumb ahah
No need to feel dumb about that - making jasmine with anything other than green is unusual even here. Very glad to feature this tea - we are restocking it :)
10:31 yeah except in flint, michigan 😂
Another Jesse vid = A good Day 😁
Your assistant is awesome! She has a great way of describing things.
That would be a dream come true to come see the tea fields and to have fresh tea made by people who know it more! Gorgeous looking tea and shop!
Let’s see what it looks like next year I might do a tea vacation trip
Yaaaayyyy!!! Thank you!!
Those tea markets look insane!
I love how she described the taste of the tea and how it moves through the head and into the body.
The lotus tea pet!
His wooden grab-y tongs!
Is that a Lu Yu statue on the shelf? I’ve read they’re common in tea shops.
Thank you for bringing us along and putting so much effort into making the long-form videos. I imagine that like a good pu’erh, their value will increase with time.
Absolutly bonkers there can be an entire mile of road dedicated to almost nothing but tea shops. Very cool.
My parents brought some jasmine tea back from a trip to france, very glad you got me more into tea so I can enjoy this to a fuller extent.
jessie saves tea day

Fantastic insight frm many knowledgable people in chinese tea. I will be investing in my first tea set soon!
Thanks for the perfect video to drink my tea to
These are so good. I want to join you and drink awesome tea all over China, so cool. You’re the man.
The flowers puff their flavor into the tea when they bloom at night. Bonkers technique. So cool.
I want to go to China and drink tea!!
Just received this tea. Very good. Thank that man for me please.
This is awesome!!
Very, very interesting and pleasing video.
Love this content!
lmao clever gadget at the end on the video! Love your more long content
I would absolutely love to travel to China and take in the culture, tea and non-tea related, but I feel like it's one of the countries where not knowing the language would be the most impactful on the experience.
I love these videos so so so much. 10 minutes feel like half a second. Kinda feels like I'm there at the table drinking tea with you guys and learning new stuff lol
That’s what I’m going for :) that’s why I go here and I don’t want to ruin that vibe with too much editing
This is AMAZING CONTENT!
I would love to go to China one day. It is on my bucket list.
I’m going to try and put together a tea tour next year
You have many friends with u ❤
This is literally my dream, I would spend literal days going to all the shops
Hey man you look like a young dean ween, keep it up
tea mall 🤯
I would like to know what he means by pure water, is that spring water, or distilled? I prefer to use spring water for brewing beer, and coffee for sure so I get his point.
Will this tea come back on your website for sale?
Do u ever get hassled there at customs etc. I would never go
i’ve really been enjoying your content, first on instagram and now here, and just bought a Gaiwan and tea set. how can i tell when a tea should be washed or not, how to brew different teas etc? should i just ask my purveyor?
I give steeping instructions and info cards with all my teas :) help make this easy for people!
Can you share the name and location of this tea house ? which floor in the market ?
Wait hold on let me learn some mandarin so we can go on tea adventures
How can I contact his shop located in the market 🙏
I got a passport recently and I always figured I’d never go to china, now I’ve gotta reason. Lol just wondering does customs let you bring tea back to the states?
Yeah I have never had issues - it’s not an issue from a wildlife standpoint or whatever it’s all dead leaves
Even if the bag or container is open? I'm in Japan and bought loads of gorgeous tea which I can't wait to break in to but I'd be super sad if my open bags were confiscated.
This format for video was phenomenal you produce quality content and a very apritiated service making such wonderful teas so easily acsses able around the US as well even all the way up in Alaska😂
So glad to hear the tea is reaching alaska! ill tell wu Kai I am sure he will be happy 😂
I did like and subscribed. But it is too late for me for a cup of tea.
Hey does wu kai have a website for his shop ? I would love to support his business as well as yours 👍
Supporting my business is supporting his! I have his teas on the shop - I buy them from him and import them. The Gongmei white tea ball, Qimen red tea, and the fuding white chocolate bar are all his. The black jasmine dropping this summer is also going to be his of course.
The jasmine tea I have is in the form of little balls, could anyone let me know why/how they do this. Sorry if my grammar is bad I’m sloshed off the crown royal as I type this
As it turns out my grammar was fine
Omg. U talked about the using the tap in usa was good. But no way. Would I use tap to make tea. I would use deer park spring water. Please don’t tell me after doing all the little tea thing u do. U use tap water.
Depends on where you live. The water in my hometown tastes really hard, like calcium. Where I now live, only 400 km away, the water tastes like volvic, completly neutral and nice for tea. Im not american but im assuming that this isnt different in the US. I bet that Backcountry Oregon Tap Water must be pretty nice for tea, NYC water not so much.
😅not all of us are American😮 just say friends!
Very true
@@jessesteahouse I am drinking a Blueberry leaf tisane that would blow your mind!😵 let me know if you want a sample sent to you.👍🏾 You inspired me to start collecting and drinking rare tea. Just picked up some old tree white moonlight, heirloom Ginggu white moonlight coins, old tree silver needles (Vietnam) and ORGANIC HUNAN (FUZHUAN). Off to a great start!🎉

When he says 'pure' water, does he mean demineralized water? I though it could be harmful to drink that.
