  • The rear coil spring suspension on the 2009 and up Ram 1500 rides great, but the added difficulty in accessing the upper rear shock bolt is the trade off. It's not so bad with the right tool though....

    I watched this video and was ready to cut a crescent wrench down to grab the back bolt. I have a 2016 Ram 1500 and once I removed the fender liners i noticed an L type bracket on the back side of the top bolt. It seems Fiat/Chrysler/Ram realised their error and added this fix to the design. I put a 21mm socket on my impact gun and the bracket on the back nut held itself on the frame and the bolt came right out. It took longer to put the fender liners back in than it did to replace both shocks.

      Very cool! Might have to see if the dealership has that new nut available to order or purchase the next time I replace the shocks. Thanks for sharing your discovery!

      So did you just use the impact gun and give it a go till it got loose? No wrench holding the back bolt?

      Wow, I'm praying my 2017 has that L type bracket on the back side of the top bolt. Looks like a PITA to remove otherwise.

      @@mjnatty968 I haven't got around to it yet. Let me know if yours has that new nut adapter and how much of a pita it is to remove that nut. I recently put Timbrens's on the rear axle to help with sag with my travel trailer. Next project will be the shocks. Like I said, let me know how yours goes.

    Dude I just replaced mine, and after a lot of cursing in the middle that wrench trick worked, still hard to do it but def was the best idea

  • @franksgarageandcustoms8321

    I used a crowfoot and it came off without too much fighting.
    I then welded a 1/2”x1-1/2” tab on the nut. It wont be a problem next time.

    Use a crows foot and an extention with ratchet or breaker bar from the tire side then you can just rip the impact. No cutting tools or anything super easy

    I'm in the middle of this. I did the passenger side fine with a ratchet and a deep 21mm although it was a bear and started to round one corner of the nut off. The driver side, with the fuel tank...well, there's just no room. I'm off to cut an adjustable wrench, which is better than cutting a wrench I actually use. Thanks for the idea.

    easiest way if you don't have a 13/16" stubby wrench, is to buy a spare 13/16" wrench and cut the box end to be 4" long. Fits in there just fine.

    socket wrenh with folding head and 22 mm deep socket will work also before putting it back on if you have access to a welder.weld a tab onto the bolt .it will hit the side of the valley it sits in allowing you to lossen it with out a wreñch next time

    OMG, I friggin knew it! The moment I finished doing the rear passenger side strut (which took me all feckin day to loosen that back nut) I went to do the drivers side and totally lost it! This is my nightmare as well!
    I'm probably going to go out of my mind doing this. Ugh. Feckin azzhole engineers don't give a rats ass about DIY FOLKS LIKE US! I SWEAR I THINK THEY DO IT ON PURPOSE. THERE'S NO REASON to build a truck like this, none. They could've just as easily built it so that we could access the top nut and bolt. But Nooooooooo.
    Thank you for posting this video! Now I'm going to watch it and see just what a cluster feck future I have ahead of me with this SHYTE!
    Oh BTW, THERE'S NO WAY I'M DOING MY FRONT SUSPENSION! HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED JUST TO REPLACE THE FRONTS? OMG!
    I bought all 4 front and back, but I don't give a shit! My front ones are not getting done by me! I'll take them somewhere and have them put on! I just don't have the time or patience

    • @TheBudgetMindedMotorist
      @TheBudgetMindedMotorist  Před 6 lety

      Troy Hayden that nut was torqued pretty tight. It's definitely going to take at least an adjustable wrench to hold the nut while turning the bolt.

    you need not take the fender liner out just take hole saw cut opening directly across from bolt head use impact on the bolt and hold the inner nut with a socket not hard to do I do it all the time and dose not take long can do both in 40 minutes .

      @bmeach4940 Před 5 lety +3

      Why would you cut a hole in the fender liner when it isnt necessary? Just remove it, then put it back. It may addb10 minutes to the job, but your fender well won't have a big hole in it.

      @@gangrel1055 When i put bilstiens on my 2014 sport I removed the inner fender no problem. But now i have a 2018 Laramie and it has fender flares from factory and they seem to be glued on. Im thinkin about goin for the the holesaw route , and then putting back a rubber firewall grommet plug to hide the hole. Seems a hell of alot simpler than having to break the glue or tape or what ever is holding my factory flares in place.
