RWBY is Doing Something Interesting With Qrow

- Qrow Branwen, agent, Hunter, mentor and uncle, he is all these things and one would assume on that summary that he was also doomed to the dreaded mentor death trope.
RWBY however is a smart show that likes to its theme's and characters and avoid leaning on tropes when they don;t serve the story to instead tell a richer narrative.
I am hoping this video can be used to kick off a short series discussing some cool things I've noticed in RWBY, with thanks to all the analysts I have read and Unicorn of War specifically for all the meta I have been able to absorb that helped me articulate this video.
Qrow is easily one of the best characters and might be best character. His constant changes makes so much sense.
And he’s the best girl
Precisely why I still watch the show- Qrow, Weiss, Oscar, and Robyn are the only characters that are important to me personally.
I know this video is 6 months old, but it feels very nice to watch a positive video about the show and its characters. Great analysis!
i know, right?? i get so upset seeing all the videos saying the show is trash, like seriously, if you were to just take a moment to actually appriciate it and for gods sake get over the animation,(which can actually be good, in fact, is good, people don't realize how much work it is to animate something.)
@@kitti3thesnake581 Exactly!
It’s ok but every since the creator died. They have done some rather boring and roll your eyes and sigh
Stuff. Also most of the fans are annoying ***** that just want to see everyone that even has a single interaction to be in the others pants..mainly of the gay variety. the Bumblebee ship is cringe stupid gross and needs to stop unfortunately it looks like they already made them gay for each other because of course they did. Also Blakes new haircut 🤮🤮🤮🤮
@@doomslayer1210 Y'know... no one asked for your opinion.
@poggers I don’t give a damn
I still love the showing of genuine shock from Qrow, when ever one of team RWBY, including Yang, who had known him since she was a kid, thought that he would ever have any sort of intention to ever even threaten Ruby's safety.
Like, genuinely, she is probably the person that he cares about most in the world. I mean, even disregarding the fact that she is his niece, the fact that she is the daughter of his late friend, or even the fact that he has become estranged to both his friend and sister. He practically helped raise Ruby. he watched her grow up, and taught her pretty much everything she knows. His greatest happiness, at this point especially, would just be to see her grow up and be happy.
And yet, his staunch following and support of Ozpin had led to the fact that even Yang didn't trust him at that point. She genuinely believed that he would forgo all of that just to stay loyal to Oz, and do what he says.
Its such a good little moment that says so much yet does so, so quietly, excellent insights and breakdown!
@@xelwriter5485 Thank you. I was binging through these videos, and felt the need to point that out when I saw that scene in it.
There's a theory going around that I've heard of that qrow's semblance isn't bad luck at all, but actially to influence luck based on his mood/mindset which is probably usually sour. They use the scene with the nuke almost falling out of the plane as their base since it had stopped.
I really enjoy that theory and I think it makes sense, Both Clover and Qrow have very different lives, by all accounts Clover seems to have lived very easily, comfortably and always succeeded, while Qrow was, at best, born to an abusive gang of bandits or forcefully adopted at a young age and named for the problems he caused his abusers. The difference in mentality from such divergent upbringings would inevitably lead one to look at these things differently.
I am of the opinion that Qrow is a mentor character on par with the likes of Iroh. The big difference is that we get to see his character development onscreen, while for Iroh it already happened.
That's an excellent insight!
That was A great Way To word That Nice
Qrow is the best character and no one can ever change my mind. i hate how many videos say the show is bad, i love seeing a good video about the show. it's so upsetting seeing all the videos saying the show is trash, like seriously, if you were to just take a moment to actually appreciate it and for gods sake get over the animation,(which can actually be good, in fact, is good, people don't realize how much work it is to animate something.) like-- cmon, the developers probably put a lot of work into the show, so give them a break--
I get you but most people don’t think it’s really about the animation, it’s about the characters that we both loved being turned into lesser versions of themselves to fit in à not-so-good plot, fight choreographies decreasing in quality, and overall the huge waste of potential that RWBY is. Take the time to check one of those videos, the ones that are actually thought through and not just hating on the show, they make great points
@@yorickkaz8006 exactly
I mean at least RWBY isnt Ex-Arm.
You need to learn more about criticism.
The videos I've seen barely criticize the animation, but rather the mediocre writing and wasted potential of the characters and the show as a whole.
its almost like they are trying to treat all the characters like they are fallible humans. Prone to failure, success, and learning threw life
Weird right? XD
I love RWBY you can’t change my mind
Pleasantly surprised by the positivity of this analysis! Qrow is one of my favourite characters in media atm, for reasons stated in the video. However, one thing I’m slightly annoyed with Rooster Teeth about is how they handled Clover - it’s a neat idea for Qrow to meet someone who he can finally be around without having to worry about hurting them in some way, and even the death would be fine since it gives Qrow a new motivation, but I really feel like there should’ve been more screentime for the friendship. In my experience, it felt as though we’d only just got to know Clover, let alone fully see the friendship between him and Qrow unfold, before he was killed. I feel like there could’ve been so much more done to increase the bond between the viewer and Clover, as well as appreciation for the friendship, so viewers could share Qrow’s despair when Clover died. I guess it’s a pretty minor criticism though, and in no way outweighs my love for RWBY as a whole - but I haven’t seen many others talk about it ^^’
That's fair, one struggle RWBY always has it there is so much story and so little time. Though in regards to Clover & Qrow, I also think with some more hindsight, there were extra aspects of unhealthiness to Qrow's dependence on Clover. Tied to both his loss of a guiding force in Ozpin and his self loathing, plus his fears of his Semblance, so the relationship was a friendship, but also cos of where Qrow was mentally, there was more under the surface too.
I didn't think of the whole 'Only person who he could be around without worrying about his semblance' thing even though it feels so obvious now.
Any chance you could make more videos in the future? I've been begging reality to give more channels that actually analyze the show and it's themes as opposed to non stop criticism. And yours was great
Apologies for the belated reply and I am glad you liked that point :)
I have at least four other scripts planned which I hope to get to over the coming weeks, I hope they prove engaging and yeah I sympathize with you on that desire .

Nice to know you can sympathize
I hope you can become more popular in the future!
@@brianbrush5107 I hope they prove fun!
Indeed.
Thank you :D
I mean, his Sembance has only been shown to be a mild annoyance at worse, not really the terrible curse he made it to be.
@@MrRemicas Not True.
"Say something nice about a rwby character?"
I too love to be non-toxic and a decent human being.
it Is Nice To See More Positive reinforcement for this show that i love i have been with this show since the end of volume 2 and have loved it ever since Good to know other people besides me appreciate this show
I'm happy to be of service :) I often go to Tumblr for good RWBY takes, there's some RWDE people there, but overall its very positive.
Yes!! I love Qrow!!! He’s the best
You my fav now😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Thank you for your kind words! :)
I sort of wish volume 8 did something different with him
Fair enough, I wish we'd gotten more time with him, but I am glad he basically got a friend to actually help him work through his grief and issues over going on a self destructive rampage.
@@xelwriter5485 true
It's pronounced hype- a- thon. I think.
Yeah, "marathon of hype" was the idea, back when I was a teen and thought 'hype' was 100% a good thing (it's not). But it's cool. I just find it funny that even my online name gets mispronounced.
My bad XD
Best character ever
Qrow is quite interesting.......glad he stopped drinking for now but with team ruby and jaine missing.....don't know hid mind set let's hope Robyn will try to keep him straight.....plus he is the only most popular adult compared to the other rosters
Fortunately there's no way he can backslide on the airship, following that who knows.
Your account says you have no videos...while I'm watching a video
Because the video is unlisted
I forgot to take it off unlisted, my bad XD Thanks for noting it!
@@xelwriter5485 No worries! Your welcome!
@@xelwriter5485 In your description, what did you mean not leaning on tropes? There are plenty of tropes in RWBY.
@@toastgear2532 There are but RWBY doesn't lean on them in lieu of storytelling it makes use of them, plays with and subverts them. Qrow being a mentor figure with a character arc and being the one who needs to be inspired and guided to action by the main cast VS a source of exposition, a mission and then dying s just an easy example.
I just love Qrow I don’t care 😭💖
Honestly I shipped him and clover. There was definitely some intimate tension between them
Qrow did become an idiot on another in that episode
Fr, people will hate me but...i didnt feel for crow at all in clover's death
He literally helped tiryan to kill him, why was he surprised? And then blame ironwood when Robin was the once who left tiryan free and Made the plane crash? Like come on, youre being stupid for the sake of the plot now...
Qrow is the only reason I started watching Rwby, and if someone made a supercut of exclusively Qrow related scenes, I'd just watch that instead :'D
Qrow is cool but my problem with the scene at the end was it wasn't his semblance that killed the Ace ops leader. It was all Qrow's fault that he died. Sure I can see why Qrow had to fight him but Qrow teamed up with Tyrion. Qrow and the ace ops leader could have easily taken Tyrion down and settle their differences afterward. Qrows semblance had nothing to do with it. It was Qrows decision alone. Trion murdered the ace ops leader but Qrow got him killed
... I am pretty sure I covered this but Qrow tried to take on Tyrian with Clover. Clover was the one who chose to attack Qrow when he was distracted. As to his Semblance, Qrow is used to blaming every bad thing that happens around him on that.
@@xelwriter5485 yesssss finally someone understands!!
I know I'm late to the party but the volume 7 finale still bugs the hell out of me. It's like Robyn, Clover and Qrow all became complete idiots to move the plot forward. It still doesn't make a lick of sense to me why you would make those choices in that situation. The only excuse I could think up was that Tyrian had some sort of "stupidity semblance."
I honestly feel bad for what they did to iron wood. Even as a huge fan of the show I can see it’s short comings. Like, his semblance causes him to think incredibly straightforward. To the point where he is tunnel-visioned. And is something that he cannot control. Which sounds like a mental disorder, like Aspergers. And he’s still presented as a monster. You know who else has a passive semblance that can unknowingly cause harm to other? Qrow. Imagine if Qrow was presented as a villain for his semblance hurting Ruby. Again, I’m in love with the show, but it’s still can disappoint me.
In my opinion they ruined Qrow in volume 7 with the Clovers death but that's just me.
I don't really see how, but that's me.
@@xelwriter5485 For me the levels of idiocy displayed from him and Robin ru8ned their compentency as characters. This man went from let's not fight to teamming up with Tyrian when he could've just flew away if he didn't want to fight.
@@aarondx3764 I'll break down my response:
1: Robyn was in a ship with Ironwood's chief lapdog, has just found to her city is being left to die and that she's heading straight to the tyrant who ordered it, while her only nominal ally is being arrested for being associated with whistleblowers. Not fighting would be stupid.
2: Qrow tried to fight Trian, but Clover kept intervening and if that kept up all of them would die. Adding to that Tyrian is very good at feigning mania and played on the idea he actually gives a shit about Qrow as a rival. Thus Qrow thought they'd knock Clover out of the fight and then deal with each other. Tyrian's a lot smarter than that though and so played him entirely.
@@xelwriter5485 You know vexed viewer? He Made a whole vídeo about this and he's right.
Hate me but crow has been on the show for waaay too long, i'm a fan of him but damn, kill him off or make him go away.
@@iatemycat5320 Vexed Viewer is an idiot.
Do instead of murdering Jim they just made it so he's irredeemably stupid instead?
Ironwood was never portrayed as that smart, this is the guy who thought loudly and openly marching all his troops in the vague direction of a secret base he thought might exist was a good plan.
Robyn wasn't really smart either instead of stealing supplies at night and wear mask to hide her identity
She went stealing at clear day light where people easily could have notice her she doesn't even bother to hide her identity.
'Was' doing something, unfortunately
Ruining. That's the word you're looking for. They're ruining him.
I don't think you know what that word means.
Just because one aspect of something is decent, doesn't mean that the whole is decent.
This statement is entirely meaningless when not couched in context because it can be said about literally anything. The Godfather? The above is true. Citizen Kane? The above is true. Mario Party? The above is true.
@@xelwriter5485 this is in context? Just because they’re trying to do something with Qrow which is arguably not even a good thing in the first place, doesn’t mean the whole show is good now and everything that is terrible about it should be swept under the rug
@@finleymorris04 Given you haven't mamaged to argue any of the shows alleged negative qualities, or explain your issues with Qrow, this amounts to little more than baseless complaining in the comments section.
@@xelwriter5485 I dont want to list all of the bad things since that would take a while and be a complete waste of time, and utterly pointless as there are already many video essays out there that go into detail about how the show significantly declined in quality after S3, go ahead and watch those.
