  • Hello again!
Lie Ren, super chill, the perfect student and loyal comrade, but is that all there is to him?
Well not in my eyes, and in this episode of RWBY is X, I will be discussing Lie Ren, his character, his arc and the way CRWBY communicates his development and hidden layers by showing rather than telling.
Sorry for the delay on this one, I am trying not to stress myself out by rushing through these videos, but I got into the zone yesterday and here we are!
I included music this time and managed to get some mov files this time, wooh, what's this, production values, in my neck of the woods? XD

I remember there being a couple of discussions on the Reddit trying to piece together why Ren was acting the way he did and I think you've explained it perfectly.

YES! Lie Ren is such an overlooked character in the cast and it's frustrating that people think he doesn't have anything going on as a character since he killed the Nuckaleave. Great insightful video as always!

Thank you and completely agreed! I actually have a video planned that will cover how RWBY seems to handle it characters/arcs that will hopefully but stuff like Ren's handling into a clearer context, but until that hopeful point, happy to be of service!

look, nobodys as frustrated as the fans man. Its not that we overlook his character, so we think theres nothing going on. We're hoping there IS something going on, we just have been progressively losing faith in the writers ability to give him an arc.
We thought yang was getting an arc with her PSTD
We were hoping rwby got one when penny came back (or something leadership related)
Weiss should have gotten one with her family, but they just made her give whitly a hug and said "we good bruh"
and blake seems to have nothing going on as of late
And these are the MAIN characters. They did pretty good with ironwood in the previous volume so maybe there is hope for ren?

I've always loved Ren for this, and I'm glad that someone put this out there

One thing I want to add is where Jaune & his overall role might be in all of this.
I always find the criticism that Jaune is given too much focus interesting since he is at the end of the day, the leader of the 'B' team of this story. Brian McDonald in one of the episodes of the You Are a Storyteller Podcast talked about how having a story be first and foremost about a single character as a means of focusing your story (link below) and while we could talk about how many think RWBY in some ways lacks focus in that regard (ways that I don't fully agree with the consensus about), I'm not really interested in debating that.
    czcams.com/video/M2lhgYk9nMo/video.html
What I care to dive-into is Jaune's place in relation to Ren's story as a team leader and how for the first 6 volumes, there is a fair amount of trial & error how he approached that position. In fact, a big part of the error was due to his insecurities with him falling behind his peers and struggling to making sense of Pyrrha's death and owing her. When he finally understood why Pyrrha did what she did before she died, what her thought process was, Jaune going forward has been steadily and properly following Pyrrha's example.
There's a lot that I think is worth unpack about how Jaune's story is molded, right down to how he designs have changed. But for now, I think where this will go for him is that he's developing more of a conviction as a team leader as we're already seeing him do in little ways between being more watchful and encouraging around his teammates and applying crowd control in a crisis. His story is essentially transitioning from a dynamic character arc to a static character arc, which just so happens to conveniently be when we see what may be a dynamic character arc for Ren. The setup is especially convenient since unlike volume 4, where Nora could more easily connect and get through to Ren due to them sharing the same enemy and fear in their past, she is struggling to connect with Ren in volume 7, where it feels like there's a clear rift between them. Jaune could potentially serve as the necessary glue to hold Ren & Nora together and volume 8 seems to be following that trajectory given the snippets that have been teased to us as of late.
Now, I have to stress, this is all treading into theory crafting and I've learned to not be too attached to my own speculations in favor of better observing and understanding the direction the story will actually take. So to anyone reading this, if you found yourself at all nodding over what I said above, _pleeeaaase_ don't get too attached it. lol

This was a really excellent read, thanks so much for sharing it, I really loved your comparison between Jaune & Ren with how both are swapping places from dynamic character arcs to a static character arcs and visa versa, its a very good observation and meshes well with RWBY's long for story telling nature.

Xel Writer Side note: as much as I love Jaune as a character I have to admit he hasn’t always had the best advice for his friends (so much for Joan of Arc always knowing the right thing to say)
While *some* of V3 can be attributed to the miscommunication, and not having all of the information by the point of V4 it’s clear that despite his best efforts to help Ruby (well in V3 it was Pyrhha) he is also projecting his issues with his inadequacy on to her unintentionally. As such while giving her the advice “you didn’t force us to come” was good advice. He unintentionally went to far. When he added “you give us hope to keep going”
He may have not intended it. But it’s he unintentionally pushed the idea onto her that she HAS to keep going

    • @animalia5554
      @animalia5554 Před 3 lety

I can take this further and try to speculate on where it might go from here... but I don’t think this setup was unintentional on the writer’s part.

@@animalia5554 Thanks so much for these comments and amazing insight on the accidental pressure, you've got a keen eye there, I love it! I'll definitely consider doing a video on Jaune, though given my own grappling with the characters early stuff I worry it'd end up too long or convoluted >

Imo getting his license was scary to Ren too, it focuses on his face iirc
At Haven they were underdogs, students facing the odds
in Atlas they're Huntsmen, the minimum expectations have skyrocketed

    1:04 CATLOAVES!
On a side note, I do sometimes wonder if 3:32 is really Pyrrha's mother, because the way she came and disappeared makes me think that it might have been Pyrrha's spirit taking an older form to convince Jaune to move on.

      So cute right?!
That is definitely possible, I left it at mother for now as its the only answer that doesn't require a big digression into speculation.

I thought it was her sister. Seemed to fit with the theme of the show.

I don't believe the red haired woman in Atlas was Pyrrha's mom, because if you look at all the other mothers (With the exception of Summer) in the show, you notice one detail that they all have in common. All the mothers have crowfeet under their eyes reflecting their age. The Red haired woman doesn't have have crowfeet under her eyes, implying that she is still resistively young, possibly in her late twenties or early thirties.

    • @xelwriter5485
      @xelwriter5485  Před 8 měsíci

Fair point but she could have had Pyrrha young, or be an older sister I guess, or just not led a super stressful life till her daughter died, while characters like Raven & Willows are super stressed out all the time.
