    I don't think Doctor Who needs a head writer who writes most of the episodes. I think they need a head writer who reviews and proof reads all the scripts for the episodes. That way you don't have one person who needs to come up with and write like 6/5.5 episodes per season. Maybe they could write one or two but not 6. I don't think anyone could manage that.

      Absolutely, I thought Moffat was too controling (although he got a bit better in Capaldi's era) but Chibnal is just ridiculous. Ideally I'd have a showrunner who writes no episodes, but picks a team of writers, sets out the general characterisation of the doctor and companions and otherwise backs off, letting each writer bring their own unique spin to every episode. That would be very much in the spirit of classic who.

  • @jacobpalmer5400
    @jacobpalmer5400 Před 5 lety +73

    I want Neil Gaiman as showrunner. I know he likely won't because of his bad experiences with Nightmare in Silver, but the first episode he wrote The Doctor's Wife was personally one of my favorites, and I reckon with a more controlling role he could come up with stuff that doesn't revolve around a heavily politicised gendered agenda. He only wrote these two but I think he could (to quote tennant) 'do so much more.'

      Reading my comment back I realise as a capital city I should have added Cardiff to my list but I think my point still stands. And as the then main passenger port of entry to the UK Southampton may be on there as well for that simple reason. But Sheffield? Despite it's famous steel industry unlike Liverpool and Manchester they had nothing to distinguish themselves economically or industrially (on a global scale at least) from dozens of other medium sized UK cities.

    One small point. When you mention Umbreen telling everyone at her birthday that she was "the first woman" to do this, that and the other, and questioning why they don't already know....well....have you ever had grandparents? They tell their stories over and over and over again. It's a thing that old people do :P
    Also, why do people keep getting confused about why she doesn't recognize Yaz? It's the same complaint people have with Back to the Future....why do Marty's parents not think it's strange that their child looks like a guy they met decades ago? Well the simple answer is because it was, in fact, decades ago. If anyone thinks that they'd be able to recognize the face of someone they'd met for a single day fifty years ago....or even just ten years ago....then they must have something close to a perfect eidetic memory

    The ending made me cry but I was already in a Remembrance Day mindset so the faces of all the unmourned people really got to me and I still think the episode was very good. I can't dispute your points apart from the Sheffield bit because if she knows Britain as this land where the streets are paved with gold from their presence in the region, it would make sense for her to eventually end up there (she would still spend quite a few years in Pakistan). Also I don't think they were harvesting the essence of anyone, simply mourning when no-one else did. And before the reveal they were very menacing, just not caring about The Doctor's presence in the region. But yeah the acting was sub par.

    I thought Demons of the Punjab is a decent episode but I still enjoyed this review. You brought up some legitimate criticisms, as I also thought the actor who played Prem was totally not good. A part of me is disappointed that the Thijarians weren't the villains of the story as the villains in previous episodes were incredibly bland but also I enjoyed the twist that they were actually pacifists and I like the idea of them acknowledging/honoring beings that die alone.. Also it's weird that the guest stars didn't have Indian accents but that's just a nitpick on my part. I thought Graham's scene with Yaz was beautifully written and I thought Manish having his own brother shot was hard to watch even though I felt that the writer rushed Manish's development towards the end. Because even with all of her knowledge, her Space & Time-Ship, her tools, and her companions... she's unable to do anything but make sure that things happen they way they're supposed to happen. Even when she thinks there's something she can do, which is to fight the alien threat, she finds that there really was no threat at all. That's the whole point of this episode. I didn't think it was down there with the 2s! I thought it deserved about a 7, probably. It was certainly the strongest episode so far this season. It's roughly equivalent to Vincent & The Doctor or Father's Day.
    I also thought the Doctor's hipocrisy over the not interfering was deliberate character stuff rather than just bad writing, because of Yaz's face when the Doctor agrees to presiding over the wedding; Yaz knows this wedding going ahead might mean that she doesn't get to exist, whereas the Doctor's ego is stroked and she's been a dizzy as hell to not see the potential damage, which is why Yaz chastises her. In fact it's the first time we've seen conflict in Team Tardis which is something greatly missing. Many is the time Bill or Clara had a go at the Doctor, but this TARDIS crew all seem to be conflict free, which has meant drama free. Perhaps Yaz should have confronted the Doctor more strongly over this. "It's not your family history you're screwing about with! I could end up not existing!" And you can't fault the cinematography - it looked beautiful

    I disagree with you on this episode.
    This was a story more designed to appeal to the emotions, and it's there it worked for me. I've heard some comparisons to Indian soap operas from various reviewers. Which doesn't surprise me given the appeal to emotions implemented--which seems to be part of the lesson this doctor seems to be set up to learn: how to manage one's emotions. She goes in all guns blazing as a character and has to learn nuance and tact as a character (which fits, considering 12 had to learn to get in touch with emotional expression, that 13, being in touch with emotions, has to learn how to control and channel them). I'm calling it now, which is why the stories lean more and more towards emotional storytelling--which will either work or not for you depending on how things play out.
    Though I do agree that it felt too compact and distilled as a story and unable to capture the scope of what was going on. I think this story could have benefited from being lengthened into a two-parter where the themes only touched upon could have had the time and the breathing room to be expanded upon, and the thing that this kind of melodrama requires (audience investment in the characters) could have been afforded the time it needed.
    But that seems to be my running critique of this entire series... the ideas are decent, they're just trying to squeeze too much into one episode when they should have spread most of these ideas out into two parters to better fit the style of storytelling they're after.

    Considering the aliens never had any intention of messing with anything, doesn't that mean that the Doctor & Co's involvement was completely pointless? Usually these episodes where they go back to the past work better if they actually make some impact on... anything.
    The Doctor and Rose actually helped solve the mystery of the Gelth, and the Werewolf, humanity would've been screwed in the 40s if the Doctor didn't help with the Empty Child, Madame de Pompadour would've been killed by the Clockwork Droids, Shakespeare wouldn't have been able to defeat the Carrionites without the Doctor and Martha, the Daleks would've turned the world into a new Skaro if the Doctor wasn't involved in Evolution of the Daleks, the Doctor and Donna were literally the cause of Mount Vesuvius' eruption, etc etc etc
    But what did the Doctor do in Demons of the Punjab?
    Uh...
    She was racist towards the aliens I guess? They had pep talks... but really the main story (surrounding the marriage) probably would've gone the exact way it did, if the Doctor & Co weren't there. The fact that Yaz even exists, along with the broken watch we see at the start of the episode, is proof of that, right?

      The story aired on Remembrance day, it was almost 100% certainly the point that the aliens acted to honour the dead that would otherwise be unremembered. Besides, it was also the point that the events were virtually unchanged as the threat was a perceived one, not an actual one. On the point of the Reapers it would actually make LESS sense for them to appear now, since the Time Lords are back and it was explained that the Time Lords tended to prevent incidents with the Reapers as they are essentially temporal bacteria, drawn to wounds in time. Reapers don't appear at paradoxes, but when they are unchecked they will be drawn to them.

    I pretty much disagree with most of your points except the acting, and how the monsters of this episode were a little disappointing. (even though I feel like it was done on purpose because it was aired on remembrance day, and those aliens were witnessing all the forgotten and unwitnessed deaths all around the universe).
    Especially the ending with the "stupid music". I'm not sure if you noticed, but it was the doctor who music, but sung with an indian theme. I thought did a great job of tonally fitting the emotion that this story was trying to convey, even if you didn't think it achieved that.

  • @SJ9001
    @SJ9001 Před 5 lety +5

    It dawned on me quickly that in this episode the Doctor and co. are there just to watch what happens. The aliens they encounter are, as it transpires, there just to watch too. And that's pretty much what they do. Remove the Doctor and the aliens and the plot is exactly the same. The problem then is that you have more of a period piece soap opera than a Doctor Who episode, like something that's on later at night on a BBC or ITV channel for a niche audience.
    The aliens are so inconsequential that this is effectively the first "pure historical" episode in decades. I absolutely love history but always found that the problem with many pure historicals in Doctor Who was that there felt like little reason for the Doctor to be there, since the main reason was to see how real-world events played out. They weren't phased out in favour of "pseudo-historicals" for nothing.
    The most interesting thing about this episode to me was the flashbacks to World War II, brief as they were - some of the only frontline events depicted in Doctor Who episodes if I'm right. But that's purely personal since I'm fascinated by World War history. I'd be better off watching a war film.

    • @irrevenant3
      @irrevenant3 Před 5 lety +1

      Sometimes the point of a Doctor Who story (especially the "pure historicals") is as "tourists" to an interesting moment in space or time. Personally I think this moment and story was rich enough to work with the Doctor and co. as passive observers.
      It's just a shame it followed so closely on the heels of Rosa. The Doctor and her friends forced to observe a moment of inevitable history would've carried more clout if we hadn't just seen that exact same thing three episodes ago. Both are still individually strong episodes, but their proximity undermines it a little.

If it's supposed to be "Partition was bad and it separated families" then your other options were: a) India staying geographically united and a civil war continuing for years and years with extreme loss of life for no reason or b) Staying part of the British Empire. Seems like none of the options are particularly great and it would have been cool to see that actually discussed.

Especially that the Aliens were actually not hostile for a change, but that it was instead humanity who were the hostiles. Nice touch. Don't get why you disliked the brothers so much, I thought their acting / relationship were one of the best things about this episode. Also you didn't really touch on the relationship they had with each other much at all, including their big brother, who died in the war. I feel that is a missed opportunity.
    At this point you seem like you have already given up on the series, and your reviews seem fairly biased by this fact. So I don't bet you will have any "good" scores for the rest of this series, because I don't think it will change into whatever your dream version of doctor who is. My parents are from punjab and whenever I visit family in punjab they are still salty about the british empire. The only reason they moved to Britain was cause as you said job opportunities and an overall better life(which im very thankful for). Also personally I think its weird that they used the word bheti just cause its a hindu word and in my time in modern punjab if you accidentally say a word in hindi instead of punjabi they take the piss so hard (wish they had gone with another word of endearment that was actually used in punjabi). I think it would've been cool if yaz had been named after herself, like her grandma remembers the girl that helped save her life and decided to name her favourite grandchild after her.
      I personally didn't think they did a super great job with the historical context as they really didnt go into the atrocities that happened they only mentioned them and didn't really delve into them (they focused more on the alien aspect). My grandma was alive during the partition she was in a sikh village that was surrounded by many muslim villages and she says how they all looted, pillaged and murdered so many people, that every night they lived in fear as they heard gunshots and men fighting. So yeah as someone descended from a survivor of that time I dont think theyve done a very good job. I also would assume with Yazs grandma living near the border they would've encountered people who had done the terrible things relatively quickly since they were so close by.

Out of all those writers in the last few years, he was the only one that was consistently good with episodes like The Mummy on the Orient Express, Flatline, Oxygen and more or less The Girl Who Died (but I believe there he co-wroted with Moffat so that explains it).
    Imo, he would have been the best choice and I'm sure there were better choices than Chibnall, but, oh, well, we needed a real crappy era of New Who as well.

    Havnt seen it but i will but from the sound of it from your description it lacks a lot of the context to the historical event...again.
    Because yes imperialism was bad, obviously, but the partition was demanded and was an attempt to stop a civil war amd then both sides started ethnically cleansing each other while the UK had minimal troops there because...they were ending colonialism...which is good.
    So what was the alternative to the partition? Actively starting a civil war. You can actually view the partition (done along religious lines) as an answer to the sykes picot agreement of ww1 that intentionally carved up the middle east to fight against itself perpetually. At least with the partition it was planned to zig zag around religious centres as much as possible. It was hard to predict locals would attempt to murder entire towns to impotently move that border but you cant account for human hate and greed i guess.

      The episode *does* lack context, but probably no more than you would expect given how much story they had to fit into 50 minutes. It would've been nice to have more comprehensive background but it wasn't really practical under the circumstances.
      With any luck the episode piqued interest in the period and inspired people to do a little googling about it after the episode was over...

    Don't you wonder how the Moff feels about this season?
    After years of being demonized for not being a super-writer (or something) he gives the show that he *obviously* loves to Chibnall, & it rather predictably isn't nearly as good.
    I'm pissed because we got a great actress, & our first female Doctor & Chibnall's wrecking it. My daughter keeps asking why there's *NOTHING* connecting the stories together anymore, & she's declared it "boring." (And is currently rewatching 11&12 right now.)
    I wonder if he feels vindicated, or just really sad. (& After stepping in last yr, to save Doctor Who's Christmas spot...oh yeah, we don't get that this year. What?)
    I'd argued for years with people that Moffat might have moments I didn't like-but, on the whole I found his writing intelligent and full of imagination. He was witty & seemed to enjoy meeting fans -unless/until they got nasty. He gave us some great monsters & great Doctor Who lore. (Plus he brought in some truly fantastic guest writers, like Neil Gaiman.) I really hope that there's some really hungry, clever, screenwriter, Doctor Who fan who would accept the pressure and spotlight of running Doctor Who & that the BBC finds & hires them.
    I really don't want to have this fantastic series end with Jodie.
    Plus, I'd like to see what a GOOD writer could do with her. (& These companions, they've grown on me & I'd love to see them all acting their faces off!)

    I strongly disagree with you on this one. Which surprises me because I’ve agreed with you on everything so far. This was one of the best so far in my opinion. I loved the aliens for once and felt like they finally had a purpose and the story was beautifully told. The acting was genuine and the ending was heartfelt. What I do agree with though is that the Doctor can’t for the life of her stay consistent and it bugs the living hell out of me. I hate her character and she bores me half to death. It was a good episode for once but it’s not gonna save the season or her portrayal. Also little nitpicking but the song over the credits was actually the Doctor Who theme but in the Indian singing style. Listen to it back and you’ll hear it. Didn’t think some would miss that.

      Erm - just because you don’t agree with someone doesn’t make them wrong or bad. This review has pretty legit arguments. Script is bad - acting is clunky - the whole thing is rife with plot holes and the episode really had no reason to exist at all. It only served as development for Yaz, and that’s all gone out the window already after episode seven. This episode is a poorly written shitfest of half baked concept and political messages shoe-horned in, with the exception of Kablam.

    To be fair about the whole non-interference thing. It isn't the first time the Doctor has said not to interfere then proceeded to immediately interfere. One episode that comes right to mind is _The Beast Below_ The 11th Doctor tells Amy about how he is an observer only and never getting involved, of course the Doctor immediately gets involved. So I don't really have all that much issue with the same thing being brought up here.

    About "why does she tell them things they should already know?" Yes, the exposition is a bit clunkily done, and it's weird that she's saying all of it...but... My mom & dad were depression era parents. And despite the fact that we had grown up with them and heard it, repeatedly, they both tended to state facts about their lives over and over. Like, my mom had grown up quite poor, and my dad was also poor but for him it was mitigated by living near a bakery where he could get some day old bread cheap & he had a paper route.
    I cannot count how many times I was told this! And they both knew they'd said it before... Not sure why people of that time repeated some things, maybe just to emphasize things they felt helped define them?

    I agree with almost all of your points, and there's one specifically which annoyed me. This was when you called out the doctor for not doing anything when Yaz's nan is marrying a different guy. Well, I understand that the doctor just appeared to let it happen, the doctor doesn't want to accidentally change history. In Rosa, there was a clear threat which would change history majorly, and the doctor needed to rectify it. In this episode, the doctor is aware that it is likely that the guy yaz's nan would die or something anyway. The doctor is waiting to see what happens. Besides, the doctor cant just barge in there and say "you cant marry this man" blah blah blah. I agree that the thijarians are cool though, I love their design. The one thing I will say about this episode is WHY do we still have aliens who aren't completely evil???? There's normally an invasion of earth this far into the series but nope nope nope.
