To be fair, fostering 30 children isn’t out of the question. Some children are only fostered for a few days to a week. If a foster parent is willing to take on emergency placements (which this character does as they are taking in a baby on Christmas Eve) then I think 30 children is reasonable

Surprisingly, the concept of the Goblins seems like something from the 2nd or 4th Doctor era, and the amount of seriousness played by the plot and actors would have been higher than the actual episode's execution.

    3/10
This was so poor. I really tried and wanted to like it but the whole thing was ridiculous from start to finish, including the forced 'promoting our talent' song that seems to follow soap actors around.
The only thing that saved it for me is the obvious new time lady who didn't know the police box was a TARDIS at first until it moved - that I quite liked. The rest was trash. So many plot holes and unrealistic behavious from characters who just take the most bizarre situations in their stride. Be that goblins, time travel, stolen babies being eaten, instant musical numbers etc.
In fact scrap my first score 2/10 - a point off for RTD's bigoted comments about sensory impaired and mobility disabled people like me as well! Oh and I'm also gay (before someone says I'm just being some right wing anti-woke troll)

When the Doctor said there was only three percent left on them, you assume that they are bound to run out when the Doctor needs them most and he's got to improvise to get out of sticky situation. *That* would have added stakes but they worked just fine in the end.

I thought this episode was very weak, i found the doctor a little cringe and unfunny in the lines which was a shame as i think gatwa has the ability to be good. I actually really liked gibson as Ruby, she was a fun watch on screen despite how wierd it feels theres a companion younger than me now, i just found the story uninteresting at best and downright bad at worst. I want the doctor to actually get a little depth i felt like there was nothing to him which normally i somewhat accept in first stories due to the post regeneration haze, but that wasn't a factor here.
The 9th doctor was established beautifully in rose as a hero but one who had a dark streak and utterly alien, 10th doctor had his lighter, cockier flirty persona established in Christmas invasion, 11 felt pretty solid in the last 30 seconds of end of time, let alone the 11th hour (imo the standard that should be aimed for). I feel like this doctor just has nothing to him, hes kinda flirty and cheeky ig, but thats a lot like the 10th doctor without the dark side that made him flawed.

  • @kbg12ila
    @kbg12ila Před 3 měsíci

I don't actually think the doctor and ruby getting along so quickly was a problem. It seemed like she was just charmed by him very quickly which happens sometimes. Its not like Rose who only meets him in the midst of chaos. Ruby met him before and liked him a little before the chaos.
Also I think the good thing is that all the ongoing parts of this episode, the stuff we will see in season 1, is all great. The problems are really just the plot of this episode and the goblins.

This episode lacked character. Despite all the new characters in it.... I learnt some nice things about Ruby, and this set up her character to be a really interesting one... I'll agree, when I first watched it, I was exicted and gave the bad parts a pass because I wanted to see where the episode would end up. But the whole church scene at the end just felt like a poor rehash of 'Father's day' without any of the interesting parts. I gave the music a pass, but it definitely needed reverb added to make it sound diegetic. In addition, I haven't watched this actor before in anything notable but I don't know what this doctor's character traits are yet.

7:47 "The Amazing claim that she had fostered over 30 Children in her life" - My own children were fostered, Reasons why dont matter - But That's not such an amazing claim... In fact, my Daughters foster Carer is only shy of that number by about 5... She has fostered 25 children, 10 became permanent members of the family...
... There is a bit of a misconception that Fostering is always long term, but it can be for a few mere months or even weeks so it is actually very feasible!
Also, The Police Officer - And the Sonic detecting the ring in his pocket... I dunno! Again I woudl not trust the websites as sources, but there is a smell of Disney to that as it seems to be "Borrowing heavily" from the Doctor Who TV Movie with Paul McGann... How at the end McGann's 8th Doctor tried to give Grace and that young lad "Advice for the Future" that they woudl not yet have experienced but the Doctor had already seen... It STINKS of Hollywood Cliche!
Now, I dont have a big issue with it - I actually like the idea that The Doctor can make "Tiny Adjustments" by dropping tiny hints... But it is way too easy to abuse as well and that concerns me!!!
I can believe that was Disney Mandated as it STINKS of Hollywood Cliché Ideas!!!
Someone else has mentioned that The Doctor was told Cherry's Name... Though I easily woudl have looked past that anyway as they were clearly borrowing ideas from teh TV Movie meaning - Yeah, The Doctor having some idea of "Future Events" when he shouldn't... Again, CLICHE... But yeah, Ruby did mention it! Easy to miss though!
I am also a bit fairer than you... When I watched it, I gave it a 7 out of 10, I still give it a 7 Out of 10 as while it is WAY TOO FULL OF CLICHE... The pacing is off, and to much is far to contrived, It is enjoyable!
That said, its a WEAK 7/10... Compared to other Doctor Who Episodes, including eth Chibnall Era... Yeah - I think a 5 is fair!

Wow. You really didn’t like this episode. Your criticisms seem a bit random in some parts. Like the Doctor being on the roof of Ruby’s house. To me it seemed obvious from the beginning of the episode in the night club that he was investigating something suspicious that appeared to center around Ruby. My brain assumed he was nearby observing Ruby’s home for unusual activity. So him being on the roof at that point didn’t seem all that jarring. Her apartment is in the attic so the roof is a pretty good vantage point to watch for weird occurrences.
I thought the episode was a fun bit of Christmas ridiculousness. Most of the Doctor Who Christmas specials are silly romps with fantastical stuff going on. Remember A Christmas Carol with flying fish and even a shark during Matt Smith’s era? Or the mix of Santa Clause and Alien face eating monsters during Capaldi’s era? Or the Superhero Christmas special? Doctor Who Christmas episodes are always goofy, over the top, nonsensical fun in my experience. I don’t tend to take them too seriously.
Edit: Gotta admit the song in the middle of the episode did jar me a bit. In the sprit of the silliness of Doctor Who at Christmas I’m ok with it, but gotta admit it was weird. Bet Davies will do a musical episode…just hope Davies uses Buffy’s Once More With Feeling as a guide if he does go that direction. There needs to be an in universe reason for it happening and hopefully some good character development along with the singing.
Just got to your discussion of Christmas. Obviously my take on Christmas specials won’t do much for my argument here. 😂😂😂😂😂

It is probably hoping too much that Gibson was swapped out because of awareness the optics of associating queerness with hebephilia in a show RTD said was to send messages to kids may be less than politic. At least a 19-year-old is above the UK ages of consent and drinking out, but context matters.

I wondered if that might be the reason for the abrupt decision to ditch Millie; I can imagine Disney becoming alarmed that, if people start shipping these two (which they will), it all heads a bit too Epstein-esque for a modern audience!
RTD started the indulgence in Doctor/companion shipping. In classic Who the Doctor/companion relationship was paternal for the duration of the 60s (if there was any implied shipping it was between companions - e.g. Ian and Barbara, Ben and Polly, Jamie and Victoria/Jamie and Zoe); platonic friends in the 70s and mentorial in the 80s - making it romantic in the 00s was intended to appeal to the Buffy audience demographic.

    • @tonaerio

Personally I don’t see any problem with a focus on the family. Whilst it’s a Christmas special, it’s also the first introduction to the new companion and first proper look at the new doctor in action. In that regard the closest comparison is probably the Christmas Invasion. Whilst I still think that was a much better episode, even that had a very heavy focus on Rose and her family, and we’d already had a season with them. In this case it makes sense to have a focus on the family to get to know the new companion better.
Also it’s a Christmas episode, Christmas stories typically focus around themes of family because it’s Christmas.

@@tonaerio If I wanted to watch a family drama: I'd watch Coronation Street.
I don't mind family in New Who World, but NOTHING was happening. They were all literally sitting around in the house doing nothing. Runaway Bride - there was a wedding. Voyage of the damned - A party on a spaceship, Husbands of River Song had various timelines (if I watched it) And damn near 80-90% of the episode was spent on the family and no time was spent on the antagonist.
My point is: make the show entertaining, thrilling and logical. If you enjoyed the episode: fantastic. I thought the show was trash, which is sad because the show could use some solid storytelling, for a change.
