    I was never too keen on this episode. Basically, I loved the ending - I think it was a great way to send off Rory and Amy. But the rest of the story was just average. I still think the Weeping Angels were superb one-off villains that lost their creepiness a little more each time they showed up. By the time the Angels wound up working for Division in one of Chibnall's Flux stories, they were no longer even remotely scary or interesting.

    I had the impression that Amy's future was never decided until the audience saw her make choices, because of her growing up with the crack in her wall (i.e. the computer from Beast Below not knowing she was married or how she had to remember the Doctor to bring him back at her wedding).

    Been eager for this. I’ll never forgive Moffat for using the Statue of Liberty as an Angel. Also, never really had any feelings for the Ponds either but I must say when they went, for the first time, in God Complex, I was a little sad to see Amy and Rory go but at this point they’d both died so many times I really couldn’t have cared less. I almost assumed they were gonna come back next episode via a portal or something.

    This episode has a strong soft spot in my heart, although not flawless, cough...the statue of liberty...cough cough. It still holds up for me, it maintains the angels brains, without having the need to reveal more about them. Although the vortex manipulator one, im not sure about, pretty sure the vortex manipulator would just take the angel with her, like in the sound of drums.

  • @sanddagger36
    @sanddagger36 Před 2 lety +17

    There are 3 main reasons I do not like this episode.
    1. They would not have needed to build up Amy and Rory's departure like this had they just never seen the doctor again after God Complex, or maybe after Power of 3.
    2. Additions to the weeping angels. The only justification for the statue of liberty becoming an angel is that the image of an angel becomes an angel. That means that somehow they graft their images onto statues and that's how they reproduce. However, the battery farm is in direct conflict with Flux where it is established that touching an angel twice causes you to disintegrate. I understand how they can explain that. It has always been that if the same Angel touches you, then you go back to the same point time. If that is so then being touched by the same angel probably inevitably causes you to meet yourself and then talk to yourself and cause you to Marty McFly one of you out of existence. However, if the writers of Flux had just researched the previous episodes about angels they would have figured out it was impossible because Moffet (the creator of said beings) already admitted you could be touched by the same angel and not disintegrate.
    3. River's broken wrist. How did the doctor transfer regeneration energy to her even tho he was on his final life? It is established in Mawdryn Undead and in Magician's Apprentice, that a machine is necessary to transfer regeneration energy. I have the same complaint with Let's Kill Hitler. The entire fact that River Song needed to have regenerations so she could be the daughter of two people who look nothing like her irks me to no end. All they had to do was reverse who was dying in Let's Kill Hitler. If the robot had killed Melody and then the doctor wasted one of his regenerations to revive her and that turned her into River that would have made so much more sense than her already having regenerations and wasting all of them to save The Doctor. It also would have put the eleventh doctor on his final regeneration without them needing to shoe-horn in John Hurt as the War Doctor. It could have been a wonderful mystery moment where Amy recalls seeing The Doctor about to regenerate on the shore of Utah and being confused that if he just used his last regeneration to save Melody then what did she see. And then she might have figured out about the robot duplicate and it would have given the audience a chance to fill in the blanks and feel clever for following the story.

      Flux was bad writing like the rest of series 11 and 12. If you met yourself, it would probably result in the Blinnovich’s limitation effect. I’ll agree that they should’ve reversed the role between the Doctor and River, idk how they’d do the whole regeneration bit

    • @Phoenix2312
      @Phoenix2312 Před 2 lety

      @sanddagger36 With regards being disintegrated if an Angel touches you Twice... I did not watch Flux but I did watch Harry's reviews - There are a few points about that which could counter it!
      First, The Angels in Flux have taken an entire place OUT OF TIME... So that may affect their powers. Where they are being sent by the touch of an Angel does not actually exist in the Time Stream anymore so they CANNOT be sent back! That's my thoughts at least - From what I understand of the Episodes... Fan Theory!
      Secondly, The Angels are supposed to be Mysterious - Older than even the Time Lords... So we do not know their full range of abilities - They could actually CHOOSE to send someone back through time or literally just Erase them from existence... Either way they could still feed on the "Potential Time Energy" from the life they have just stolen.
      What's shown in Flux is the Characters Assumptions based on what they have witnessed... The fact is WE DO NOT ACTUALLY KNOW FOR SURE that is correct!
      And honestly, the best way of working with teh Angels going forwards is doing just that - Never knowing EXACTLY what they can do... Show them Disintegrate some and not others, Show them Moving fast when no one is looking but also moving Methodically when someone's gaze is not fully on them... Can they move when seen or not? Keep us GUESSING!
      The more they try and make everything about the Weeping Angels Canonical - The less Scary they are! The less we know for sure - The better it is and teh more frightening they become as we don't know what the actual rules are! I am not saying DON'T HAVE RULES - No... They should on Set have an Established Ruleset of Abilities the Angels have ... Answers to the may riddles such as "That which holds the vision of an Angel shall itself become an Angel" - HAVE A DEFININTIVE RULE as to what the means ON SET... But NEVER LET IT BE KNOWN OUTSIDE OF THE SET!
      That way our own Fan Canon can try and make up ideas and may or may not be right! And that would keep the Angels being ONE OF THE SCARIEST WHO VILLAINS you could ever hope for... Add more Mystery and NEVER give a definitive Explanation - Even though the Crew does have one!

      @@Phoenix2312 We already have villains that evolve with every appearance. What made the Angels unique and interesting was that they were older than time and therefore probably would not change in any subsequent appearance. I like having rules. The whole show has to have rules or the audience will get bored with huge obstacles being overcome because apparently the doctor had a hidden superpower they have never used before. Also, it was established very early that the Angels have little control over themselves. They cannot look at each other or they will be stuck. Unless they changed that too. If you don't have at least some continuity then what is the point of watching anything.

      @@Phoenix2312 I’ll see holds up when I get to flux, right now I’m on the second Doctor’s final season. But personally I think what made the angels less scary was seeing them move, especially since even in blink, they never moved since the audience was watching too. And also the last time we see the angels was this episode, and 11’s regeneration ep. but also how the angels killed people was sending them back through time. And erasing them from existence means they can’t feed off the potential energy. Since that person never existed. I’ll see how flux plays out, cause I heard that was it’s own thing in stupid

    The animated ending alternate isn't all that bad. Of course, it's incredibly flawed and I'm glad it stayed out, but with a touch up, it coulda been good. I love the idea of someone, perhaps the doctor, going to Rory's dad [and perhaps Amy's parents but we know so little about them that it's quite redundant or it can be an off screen thing] and telling him what happened. I believe Rory's dad [I really cba to google his name] did ask the Doctor at one point if they would be safe together. The other companions at least had departures with their parents still being with them [relative to the revival]. This is the first time that has changed, and it would have been a nice touch to see how this different companion exit would be resolved by the doctor, like a soldier coming home from war telling their relatives that they'll never see their loved one again.

I was still excited to see there ending, and them jumping together was actually done really well. and could lead to Matt having to deal with the consequences, going back and telling Rory's father they died, which if I remember right we hadn't had for a companion in the relaunch...... all for the ass pull of na paradox work this way now, they get to live together happy but you totally can't just pick them up and drop them off home...... spare me

    ive always really enjoyed this episode. the end where River says she'll give the book to Amy for publishing has always implied it would be given to the 1930's Amy, as that is the only version of Amy that can write the last page to console the Doctor. He could have gone back himself to a different year but as they reiterate "he doesnt like endings" and it would only further pain him. The Doctor knows they've created fixed time and the reason it should not be altered may have to do with little Melody Pond regenerating in a NYC back alley in 1969 and potentially being found and raised by Amy & Rory and finding her way to Leadworth. As Melody mentions in "Lets Kill Hitler" the last time she regenerated was in NYC.

    • @maz3215
      @maz3215 Před 2 lety +1

      The Doctor could have gone back to the same time period & got Amy & Rory back, his reasoning was he couldn't land there because of time distortions,. temporal energy & that another paradox would destroy the city etc. but he didn't have to land the tardis in New York. He just had to park his Tardis in the nearest city/town not affected by time distortions, do some investigations to find them. The Doctor could have taken that motorbike he has in the tardis to drive into New York to get them. Also just because Rory & Amy landed in New York didn't mean they had to live there. They knew loads of statues there were angels so if I were them would have moved out of there once they'd found each other.

    I mean I could pile on with all of the problems with the way the Weeping Angels are handled here (especially big silly Statue of Weeping Angel) but it's been a downhill slide since Blink, so nothing about it really surprised me when I saw it. They really are more effective as silent predators made to feel like a true threat as villains, and that really hasn't been the case past the one episode. But, I loved Amy and Rory and was there to watch their swan song and enjoy the wacky crew of the Ponds and the Doctor one last time.
    Certainly not my favorite episode (I mean this season has The Name of the Doctor, Day of the Doctor, and Time of the Doctor) but I did enjoy it.

    Hot mess this episode may be, I mostly enjoy this episode, mostly because I think it works very well as a conclusion to Amy and Rory's story. Plus, it's really well directed, and the performances of the main cast are exceptional

    What is it with Review CZcamsrs ending their episodes with loud rock music that's wildly out of balance with the rest of the Audio? It's like that annoying thing commercials do where they intentionally make their content louder than the programming.

    1) since when do time lords exhale regenerative energy?
    2) how does River know how much time The Doctor lost by fixing her hand?
    We never see River actually LEARN about The Doctor. We always see her three steps ahead of him.
    Good episode, though!

      "1) since when do time lords exhale regenerative energy?"
      My guess is the Christmas Invasion when Tennant is going through post regeneration sleep. I believe that is why the pilot fish/robo-Santas were sent after him since AFAIK the Sycorax were able to smell the regeneration energy coming from Earth. I believe this is also given as the reason as to why they had to burn the Doctor's body at lake Silencio (although that situation is a bit of a mess).

    I’ll never understand why River was angry at the Doctor for healing her hand? Why was that an issue lol I’d be grateful?

    • @imanimr2098
      @imanimr2098 Před 2 lety +6

      There’s a running theme in this episode that the Doctor cannot cope with losing people or seeing his loved ones hurt or ageing. Because of this, River feels she has to hide her injury from him. When he does find out about it, she explains her humiliation at showing him her vulnerability, which is kind of difficult and embarrassing for her to tell him. She wants him to listen, and work towards being able to accept seeing her hurt. Instead he ignores completely what she’s saying and fixes her wrist so he doesn’t have to deal with the deeper issue. That’s why she’s angry. For me it’s kind of a beautiful scene as you can really sympathise with both of them, and it’s so sad for everyone involved. Idk that’s how I interpreted it I could be wrong tho

      The Doctor doesn’t like endings, which is ironic since losing people isn’t new for him. Why be worried now when by your species you’re going to outlive everyone you know. The curse of immortality

    This is probably the worst episode send off in modern who.
    And it’s not even terrible it’s just a depressing jumble of mess.
    And the biggest sin, THE BIGGEST SIN, is the fact that only the previous episode had they been given the dilemma to keep traveling with the Doctor or stay and settle down. And this entire episode takes all of that thought and throws it out the window by showing us how wrong they were to do so.
    And it pisses me off because even though they were flawed, the Ponds and the Doctor were great together and didn’t deserve to be done this dirty.
