To be fair, this tutorial is AMAZING. I've seen tutorials that stressed me out completely, for I don't understand ANYTHING they say. You saved my life ;-;
After using game maker 8.1 for classes and personal use at home, this definitely was a huge help since I was absolutely confused when I saw how differently the studios were! I can say that coding is definitely much more better than the drag and drop. My teacher taught us drag and drop on 8.1 but I found that there is a limit to stuff and coding you can make it much more complex if you wanted! Thank you for this video!
Got interest in GMS2 through your 12 minute speed tutorial. After watching this vid, I've decided to take the plunge and start going through the platform tutorial series.
This was an awesome video, I am a beginner learning LUA and I found this video extremely useful. The most important thing was the resources at the end and explaining why you should not use DND [drag n drop] and also when to use DND. Very very useful video thank you Shawn!!!
For me, I started out with drag and drop back in gamemaker 8. I was scared of code as it was just so foreign to me. However, drag and drop was real simple as the icon with the 8 directions meant I could move my character in any of those directions, it was straight to the point! But yes, code is definitely superior. I got out of drag and drop once I started making more "complex" games that needed way more variables and math. It was out of necessity that I started learning GML. I started off small with converting what I had in drag and drop into lines of code. I realized my super long chain of drag and drop symbols could be converted into a few lines of code! I was completely sold on code from then on. I personally don't think I would have gotten into coding if it wasn't for Gamemaker's drag and drop system so I do thank gamemaker's dnd system even if it's not that powerful.
Making a Undertale fan game. I heard a while ago that Toby made Undertale on GM 1 so I decided to pick up 2 when I saw an ad for it. Very immediately accessible and cool. Thank you for this video!

Had to come bad to GameMaker after experimenting with multiple game engines, but haven't done anything in it since GameMaker the original. Needed a refresher and this certainly helped. I'm excited to check out your content, as well as the others your recommended in the video!
Thank you very much! I love how you teaching and speaking! Please continue your guides and tutorials. I'm 40 years old and I just starting to learn GMS2. You are my light in the black tunnel of knowledge.
I've been having staring competition with GM for 5 minutes and decided to watch your tutorial. IT SIGNIFICANTLY HELPED ME GET STARTED. THANK THE LAWD THAT YOU EXIST!!!
Great into. I've wanted to make a game since playing SNES in the 90's, but never could even comprehend the basics of programming, much less get a game going. GM Studio looks like something I can actually learn. That DnD thing is super cool, with the ability to convert it into code. That will make learning how to code drastically easier.
Just started and am learning the program from the ground up! This tutorial was well explained and easy to follow! Not only that but with just the bit here I was able to figure out how so much more worked and understood everything I was clicking on and defining! Thank you so much for helping me not only get a start but to feel super confident about it!!
I was teaching Clickteam Fusion and GDevelop for years. My brother used to use GM1 a lot. I'm here because I think GMS2 can handle the size of the project I'm planning on creating. It's time for me to switch and be the student. Let's do this!
Been a bit since I worked in a game engine and GameMaker already feels better to me than Unity did for learning stuff. Used your tutorial in combination with some stuff from GameMaker's manual to get movement going and even figured out how to make WASD work on top of the arrow keys without doubling the movement speed by myself, which bodes well for my understanding of the coding rules. I'll have to take some notes and potentially hand code some stuff on paper to make sure I know the keywords but very excited to get back into game dev from the more practical perspective rather than the theoretical spaces I've been playing in for a while because I disliked the game engines I knew about and didn't wanna find more.
Thank you for this, When i was greeted with the blank screen, i was confused, but now I have an understanding of how to start a game's foundation in GM!
I wish there was an alternate universe I could go to where you made Godot tutorials. Your stuff is pretty much the best I've watched, while most other (Godot included) tutorials are just watching someone rush through and explain things as if they were talking to themselves. I don't like Heartbeast's videos either because he teaches as if he has no damn clue what he's doing and it's frustrating to watch. Especially if you paid 80 bucks on one of his courses... I deeply regret it. You explain exactly what you're doing and why. Even when you code something that's not quite optimal (like that sticky left/right stopped movement) I still learn from it. So you're the best!
I started with this years ago. My proudest moment was figuring out a bug that wasn't present in this video, and I had to understand everything he taught. I've never felt smarter.
