Mickey Mouse Club "Merry Mousketeers"

  • In 1955, the very first episode of the Mickey Mouse Club introduced the world to the "Merry Mouseketeers." The first week of the show was released onto DVD as part of the Disney Treasures series a few years back, and as someone who had only seen the show in the syndicated 30 minute editions, it was a real treat to see how much the show evolved over time. I wish Disney would release more Club related DVDs.

Where can you find a kids show today that covers what the MMC did. They had a Around the World news reel 'What Do You Want to Be' career segment Annette weekly series and Spin and Marty and Hardy Boys series cartoon wildlife dancing singing both child and adult guest appearances and above all a sense of comradery for children. We all had our favourite Mouseketeer and they inspired us to take music and dance lessons. Original casts members still appear at Disneyland and are astounded how fans can still sing every line to weekly songs and intros. I purchased the entire 'Walt Disney Treasures' series which includes; The Mickey Mouse Club, Spin and Marty, The Hardy Boys, Davy Crockett etc. Treasured memories.

I used to watch this ALL the time when I was a kid. I was glued to the TV and felt like I knew all the Mouseketeers. I especially enjoyed the segments like Spin and Marty and The Hardy Boys and anything featuring Annette. I don't remember all the Mouseketeers dancing like this in the opening though. I think in the 2nd season they reduced the number of Mousketeers from 12 to 6.

Ah yes, at age 55, I remember when television was only 7 channels (2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 & 13) and was off the air from midnight to 6 am. Boy has the world changed. Who would have thought there would be so many channels on television, let alone the fact now everyone can have their own channel on CZcams??? These shows had a charm all their own, but you'd have to be my age or generation to appreciate those times. Now they are gone forever, but long live the merry mousketeers!

They were also very strict when it came to Academics. You had to keep your Grades up or your time on the Show was limited. It can be seen from the very first episode of the show that this number cracks up a punch, and these Mouseketeers were really awesome!
By the way, note that there were Mouseketeers of color through the years - Annette (being Italian-American) is considered ethnic in that era, so is Mary Sartori from the first season. Also, Mary Espinosa and Dick Dodd (of The Standells) from the first season are Hispanic (though the former also has Chinese and French blood). While it is true that there were no African-Americans proclaimed as Mouseketeers -although there were acts of that race that made it to the show as Talent Roundup winners - to say that show show is just full of white people is generalizing a somewhat inclusive show to say the least.
From someone who admires the original mice...

@view4evah There was a merchandizing tie in where parents could buy the Mickey Mouse Cup caps. The beanie part was black felt and the ears made of vinyl. They were not as expensively manufactured as those used on the show, but they served their purpose, to involve the kids during the show and make them fell included as they sang along with the program. This was an early form of audience participation aimed at children. Regardless of some of the commercial aspects, it was positive.

One thing I admired was that they were very strict about Academics. They made sure that the kids got their Education in and that's saying a lot since so many Child Stars didn't have a proper one. However there's never been an African American, Asian, or Latin Kid who got their start on the show and became a Superstar.

During the first season (1955-'56), the "CLUB" had 17 rotating quarter-hour sponsors, which were "billboarded" at the start of each quarter-hour; General Mills {Betty Crocker cake mixes, Cheerios, et. al.} was one of them. Others were Coca-Cola, Mattel, ABC-Paramount Records [they originally featured "offical" Mickey Mouse Club recordings before Disney created Disneyland Records], Carnation, S.C. Johnson [Johnson's Wax], and others.

I saw them at thë Stadium..the Old Tin Shed in Sydney. Cubby on drums. There was, I imagine, manufactured romance between Annette and Luck Starr who would appear o the "numerous"" tv shows we had. My goodness!! ourDays of Wine and Roes....mmmm!!!

@RayPointer My Mouska Ears were black felt with FELT ears and that is why they flopped over. I don't know who made them or distributed them, but the "ears" were bigger than the plastic ones produced today. I don't remember the vinyl ears. Thank you again for all the information.
My favorite day was Talent Round-up Day and The Spin and Marty stories and the Hardy Boys. Of course the Annette ones always had a moral to the story! :)
