One of the bad guys lived about 10 blocks from where I lived. These poor agents were terribly outgunned and were no match for the rifles used against them.

The worst part of the shootout is that there were several other cars out looking for these guys that had agents with submachine guns and M16s. They didn't arrive to the location until after the shootout was over.
Exactly, this was a hot head FBI agent ego problem. They all knew the robbers had at least one Mini 14 with them.
Many years ago I was in an FBI firearms instructor class and the guy teaching it was an FBI agent and his name was Mike A. At that time I had been a SWAT operator for several years and was calling into question many of the tactics that were used by the FBI during this operation. When the class took a break I went up to him and could tell he had gotten a little emotional about the conversation, and I said jokingly hey I didn’t mean to get on the Home team but some of the stuff just doesn’t make sense. That’s when he told me that he was part of the other team that was working the other end of S. Dixie Highway that day. He went into great detail about the operation and how well he knew Ben Grogan having just run with him a couple nights before. Grogan was almost legally blind without his glasses and when he lost those that’s where things really went bad. Grogan was one of the early members of the FBIHRT unit and was a very good marksman. Without his glasses he could barely see.
I attended the FBI national Academy many years later and actually studied the case file for this incident it’s very interesting what all took place and how much time and effort they have dedicated to never making this mistake again.

Great episode. If I saw this in a movie I wouldn't believe it.
Glad the FBI learned from this, but regardless, they were up against some really hardened criminals. Both had successful military backgrounds and clearly had no fear of death. They were not going to let the FBI take them alive and combined took about 18 shots when it was said and done. As to why they decided to go down such a heinous path in life? Who knows, that is one of the tragedies of this all.
Kudos, obviously, to all the agents. Mireles is a different breed ending the gunfight with his left arm alone. Probably saved a few more agents lives with his heroic actions.
Also want to give praise (even though they will never read this) to 1) The witness that managed to follow the suspects to their residence/hideout after their second murder of a Brinks truck driver. Personally speaking, I would have bolted as soon as I saw the first shot, and then once I reached safety, just called the police. Very courageous act for him, which set the wheels in motion for the FBI.
Finally, that victim at the shooting range that got his car hijacked gets full commendation as well. What a insane amount of resilience to walk 3 miles after getting shot 3 times. He also allowed to give the FBI more leads on these guys and what they looked like. Hope that man has lived a great life since then.

@@jaykoehn4106 so if i use a AK47 with my hands_does that make it a handgun?
@@jaykoehn4106 No that is not with an assault rifle is. An assault rifle is a rifle in an intermediate caliber like .223, 5.56, 5.45, etc, etc. And capable of select fire. Meaning it has the ability of semi-auto and burst fire, semi-auto and full auto, burst fire and full auto, or all three. Ruger Mini-14 can come in semi-automatic only for civilians and it could come in select fire for law enforcement or military personnel. Now according to Paul Harrell a man who used to train military or police or something around the time that the shooting happened. He specified that it was a semi-automatic rifle. Plus the select fire variant the AC 556 was not available until 1979 and was specifically and only for the government not for the civilian Market. And I highly doubt that if this dude had the money to figure out a way to get one and then actually get one, that he would be needing to rob a bank anytime soon. Meaning logically it was not the select fire variant meaning this documentary is incorrect by calling it an assault rifle.
This was a nasty gun battle. I commend those brave and heroic federal agents, who put their lives on the line, and lost theirs! The criminals had no morals or scruples, and was willing to do anything to get away with their heists, including hurting anyone who got in their way. But yeah the Mini 14 is the most non-threatening rifle there is.
And remember the Assault Revolvers you were trained with? Just after you learned to use the assault bayonet.
I know, out gunned like it ain't nothing
The general definition of an assault rifle is one that can fire fully automatic, among other characteristics. A Mini 14 is not a fully automatic weapon. Its a semi automatic, meaning one shot for each pull of the trigger.
I believe There is a full auto mini 14 but in the video they say it was a semi auto
According to the media everything is an assault weapon
@@vincentvega6932 The full auto version is called the AC556
@@carlwessels2671 correct although there are some differences(other than being full auto) from a mini14. However, i do like em both anyway lol. Would be a nice addition to my inventory
@@vincentvega6932 With all that legal paperwork I wouldn't, too much trouble.
In the Line of Fire :FBI Murders (1988) is an excellent movie about this case. They changed a couple of things (the way the veteran agent was killed) but the story is very similar to what happened in this docudrama and i think in real life..David Soul played one of the killers in a career best performance
Just as chilling as that episode on the Macgeteros investigations during the 1980s
5:11 Outstanding performance. I've never believed someone was shot more than that.
I feel sorry for the actual guy that died. The actor clearly is not the same guy
Dah
I feel bad for that guy that was shot in the balls. The worst thing that can happen to a man is to lose your balls.
No, the worse thing to happen to a man is to lose his soul.
@Vilma Betancourt Pfft. The look of confidence on Cruz's face simply shows he has no problem serving accolades to the man who denigrated him & his family on a very personal level. Cruz never had any balls. Go on, say it's just politics.
@Vilma Betancourt He's a smart man, I'll give him that. I follow him as I'm Texan, you see. He doesn't often advocate interests that pertain to me & mine, however.
@Vilma Betancourt A select few Americans he does.
Ozrico1o1 we in Canada will trade you our prime minister for your president. Our pm never ever had any balls. Zero. He sucks up to China and probably swa- - ows too. He’s a disgrace
Nice... an episode i haven't seen yet. 😁
Holy shit the final fight shoot out is unbelievable the resiliency of these guys it’s incredible on both parts
I am astonished how lightly armed the FBI were.
This is what changed it, although there was other searching to with m16, submachine guns
That shootout is one incredible tactical fail. It's like the agents really didn't plan on what to do if they ran into the bad guys.
They had never handled anything that nasty anymore.
Facts like you know what king of guns they had and ya pull up with handguns
Big failure was marksmanship.
Both of the criminals, Platt and Maddox had extensive military experience. One, as I recall completed Ranger training. Getting in shootouts really hasn't been a big FBI thing since the thirties, with the exception being the FBI CISG, a SWAT type outfit.
This particular incident spawned a complete revamping of firearms training and equipping. This incident has a lot to do with why cops nowadays carry semiautomatic pistols and not .38 revolvers anymore.
Grogan and Dove will always be with me in Life .Iwas home in Miami that Friday. RIP. ❤️❤️.
I spoke to a convicted bank robber and he said there’d be no way Platt and Matix would of had this long of a run in 2021. Too much technology out today.
What bit of tech would help
Always take cover behind the engine block of a vehicle in a firefight. Most bullets will penetrate through the panels of vehicles and into you.
How about a brick wall?
Why would the FBI go searching for 2 bank robbers with high powered rifles and not bring their own? Very brave agents. I think they would have did things differently given the chance.
Maybe u should have been there to help them Rambo
Seems like at the time they came in contact with them by chance and then just had nearby reinforcements, though in mid 1980's you't think they'd have better a side arm than a revolver.
A lot of US pol dep. didn't have high powered rifles at that time.
I think they underestimated them
@@hanschouwman4536 this is the FBI we are talking about dudes had access to MP5s and m16s
