Season 2 Episode 7: A decade long investigation of the contract killing of a married couple in Biloxi Mississippi, who happens to be a circuit court judge and a mayoral candidate, turns to a local criminal organization known as the Dixie Mafia. But as many of the culprits are convicted and jailed on other charges the murders remain unsolved and the mastermind, Peter Halat, is elected mayor. The threat of additional charges against one of the convicts pressures him to disclose the truth about the murders implicating Halat and his hitman.
The FBI Files is an American docudrama that takes a look behind the scenes of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's crime laboratory.
Real FBI cases are recounted through reenactments and interviews, due to the sensitive nature of the show, viewer discretion is advised.

I wondered why the daughter didn’t call .
I was also asking myself why he sent someone to go the house first...I knew he had something to do with it right from the start
There were no wellness checks in 1987. But it does seem that the family & the Judge’s office staff would have missed him/needed to ask him something before Wednesday. If your parents are supposed to come up on Saturday & don’t call, wouldn’t you be frantic by Sunday? Also, it’s weird that they mention no other family members in Biloxi on either side.

My first thought was the mayor was involved. When the two guys went to check on the couple he sent the other guy to go up to the house to check it out while he went next door to ask the neighbor if they'd seen the couple recently. That was suspicious!

The end is funny "the sleepy little southern town she had tried to save was gone forever" Biloxi was never a sleepy little town. The mississippi gulfcoast was a haven for mafia. There were backroom casino's in a lot of the bars. As long as they paid the cops off it was no problem for gambling, prostitution, and drugs. Biloxi especially was a wide open town. Lots of big celebrities of the day came here to perform, or hang out. I think Al Capone had a house down here.I believe it was in Ocean Spings, across ths sound from Biloxi. By all accounts, it was what made it such a popular destination. Kind of a southern vegas. That's not to say there wasn't an element of "quiet town" feel. The criminal undercurrent was kept on the down low pretty well for the most part. They screwed the pooch with the Sherry murders.
Biloxi is anything but a sleepy southern town.
It took so long to solve it because everyone in just about in law enforcement was involved in it seriously

@@doneldamacdonnell8602 its always been a wonderful place to live. Even when Dixie mafia was a presence here, it was not something typical citizens came in contact with. They were fairly low key. That's gone now, or at least to the extent that no one is aware of. Like I say, it's a great place to live. We don't have all the nonsense that's going on in other places like Portland etc.

John Ransom was released from prison in 2003 and died Feb 2006
Thomas Holcomb (the hitman) died in prison in 2005 at the age of 52
Pete Halat served 15 years and released from prison on 2012 at 69 years of age.

---Halat served a bit over 15 years and was released in 2013, at the age of 70.
---after suffering a near-fatal heart attack, Bobby J. Fabian was transferred from Louisiana to Mississippi custody in 2009. He said in an interview that he didn't "even want to get out... I just want to lay low until I die."
---Mike Gillich served 9 of his 20-year sentence and was released in 2000. He died in 2012.
---John Ransom served 12 years in jail and was given his freedom in 2003. He passed away in his Georgia home in 2006.

Halat is an utterly fascinating character. The real Halat far more charismatic and evil/powerful than the guy they had play him in this recreation. Bell is a true hero.
@@prorespluscom When I was young and working at the sheriff's department, I worked with Halat's mother. She was WILD, and her son's behavior does not surprise me. I recall her telling me that her son was going to be a judge, and of course she was proud and should be. Halat was rotten through and through.
The moral of this tale of corruption is be careful who you are friends with! With friends like Pete Halat, you need enemies!!

I was suspicious of Pete Halat from the very beginning. Asking the guy who accompanied him to go check the house while he went and questioned the neighbors is NOT something a concerned friend would do. When he went in the house and saw judge sherry laying on the floor dead, he shouted “Vincent and Margaret are dead!” How the hell did he know Margaret was dead if he never went into the back bedroom and found her body? Highly suspicious! Halat should have realized that the cops would eventually learn about his role in the murders. When the cops were removing the bodies from the house, Halat didn’t seem concerned at all. Still, I’m glad that evil monster is behind bars.

I find it interesting how on all of the “cop” shows, down to Blue Bloods (which I really love to watch), they ALL drink scotch... Even Erin, as Frank Reagan’s daughter and ADA of New York, is always swigging down a glass of scotch after the weekly family dinners or if she comes over to discuss a problem in her life. Nicky, Erin’s daughter, even starts drinking scotch, once she’s old enough, after having a bad day/week. I really wonder if drinking scotch is truly a thing cops, detectives, lawyers, etc. actually engage in. There isn’t a “cop” show out there that doesn’t show them drinking scotch! I’m thinking this must go on a lot or it wouldn’t be in SO MANY TV shows! Bleh! I can’t stand the taste of scotch! Now my 72 year old Dad will drink a small glass of scotch here and there but mostly when one of my brothers come over and they’re schmoozing. They even light up a cigar occasionally! I’ve been invited in to partake in drinking some scotch and puffing on a good cigar but it’s just not for me! I’ve tried a few cigars throughout the years because my Dad thinks they are sooo good so I’ve tried a puff here and there just to make him happy😆 My Dad, brothers nor I smoke cigarettes but I guess drinking some scotch and puffing on a cigar is an act of bonding with one another. My Dad was the Volunteer Fire Station “Chief” in the 70’s and 80’s and was also a Volunteer EMT. Maybe that has something to do with it? I don’t really drink but when I do I prefer a dark beer! sadly biloxi was turned into a casino town and most likely there are at least 3 or 4 different crime gangs killing and corrupting everyone in town. I think i would have rather have no casinos or strip clubs in my town. anyone else feel that way?
I live here, but I haven't heard that. There are no strip clubs here anymore. If the casino's here ever had mob connections, that was something from many decades ago. They're all legit BIG names like MGM etc...no, before the casino's there was PLENTY of that. Nearly every bar had a backroom card game, and slot machines, as well as prostitution, and of course quite a few strip clubs. That all was declining by the time of this murder case. Of course crime never goes away. Somebody somewhere is doing something. But you wont see it here now.

My thought was that the killer hit the gun close by the house and that was the reason that he walked off of the porch to go talk to the neighbor because the killer wouldn’t of took the weapon with him he would have hideing it somewhere close

The very moment I laid my eyes on Halat, I knew he was somehow, involved in the murders of the judge, his colleague & his wife, merely by his conduct : the statement he made that, the judge & his wife were both dead, as I learnt later, sealed my suspicion. Prior to that, I had felt if he really did care, he would have gone into the house first & not sent the one with him to face the horrific scene he knew would confront him. Reason I felt it could be Halat, was that I instinctively felt that, an act of jealousy of a colleague at work could possibly underpin the murders & when his conduct foot that suspicion, I was through with it. What then followed was building up evidence in support, which eventually, was unravelled by the investigative team, who were relentlessly on his trail. A very good job.
They gave it away by showing Halat drinking a tall glass of iced scotch at 8 AM in his introductory shot. I remember thinking it was bizarre, because why would Pete Halat give permission for his story to be used if there was a scene like that?
You knew that Pete Halat was involved as soon as he asked his underling to go to the door and check on them while he spoke to the neighbors. That made zero sense. How could cops not realize that? You're checking on your friend and you send your employee to do it when you're in the driveway?!? I knew he was involved the second that went down.

I'm sure some of the cops probably did realize that, but law enforcement was corrupt and, to a great extent, controlled by the Dixie Mafia. It was all connected.

I vaguely remember this crime, so I was happy to see this video.
If this series has actors who impersonate the characters it does a very good job with casting; Halat gave off a creepy vibe from the beginning.

Unfortunately, the police wouldn't have ever solved the murders had it not been for their daughter's dogged determination to solve the crime. She knew what happened and pushed this with private investigation. Corruption on the Gulf Coast runs rampant. Pete Halat served 15 years, 9 months, and 7 days. He was released in 2013, and he was 70 years old at that time.
The Sherrys were outsiders. Neither of them had been born in Biloxi or lived there any longer than his time at Keesler AFB in the last few years of his career. They had absolutely no ties whatsoever to the community. But Margaret Sherry in particular wanted to run the city. Margaret was on the city council and tried to override everything natives of the Coast who were on the council wanted. There had never been a time when there were not strip clubs and bars in an Air Force Base town. No one asked her to "save the City of Biloxi." Vincent Sherry embezzled a client's money while the client was in jail. Bottom line: the Sherrys went into a town and tried to control everything and run the lives of natives of the area. His embezzlement proved he was no saint either. Who died and made Margaret Sherry God? Their actions put them on a collision course with the people of Biloxi. Some of the people of Biloxi were more dangerous than others. The man whose money was embezzled asked the daughter for forgiveness in the end. Perhaps if the Sherrys had not attempted to take over the City of Biloxi and enforce what they wanted on everyone else and perhaps if "the Judge" hadn't taken someone else's money, this would never have happened? The killers paid their debt to society. The City of Biloxi suffered when it should not have. Nobody was a winner in this situation.
The story goes deeper than the video portrays. Heck, man, is it Destiney or Karma. It is a strange story though.

I have lived all my life since 72’ and remember all this going on in 9th grade so seeing this video looks so weird with all these photos of Biloxi before Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
It’s sad seeing the Homes on Highway 90 not being there anymore. What a major disaster Katrina was for the Mississippi Coast.
I lived on the Gulf Coast from 1973 to 1979 and really loved the charm of it. But I see it as a beautiful venomous snake; the snake is charming and beautiful but deadly if you mess with it. However, if I could, I'd still go back there.
